never seen that before. a flight from sfo diverted shortly after takeoff for rome. the region it was forced to make an emergency landing in sacramento. this is today in the bay. a good wednesday morning to you. thanks so much for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we'll check that early morning commute with mike as we move along. 6:00 right now. carrie's got a look at our forecast for today. it's going to be a great first day of school. we have a lot more kids going back today. and we're starting out with fog in san francisco. a nice cool morning there. it will be a cool day. and also providing a wide range in our microclimates. so for fremont, the wind coming off of the coastal areas will provide our temperatures a little bit lower for today. we're going to see our highs in the mid 70s at pick up time, bus going to be a first great first day of school. take a look at
6:02 am
all of our microclimates and what to expect today. highs in the upper 80s for napa and upper seconds for san jose. so we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, there may be some hopes for those trying to cross the bay. yeah. so if you're heading to richmond and then across to san rafael, hopefully this will be moving by the time you get there. but look at all the backup. it's from midway across the span. look oh yes. speeds are already improving quite quickly here as you're getting back toward the toll plaza where the cameras right here with all that congestion there is the build from richmond parkway heading over to the area. the earlier crash was able to get the vehicle off of the roadway and off of the bridge. most importantly, with no major injuries reported, we still have the bay bridge backup and that may be a little heavier as some folks head down there, but it doesn't look like a major shift either north or south and south of there. everything looks standard for your wednesday. back to you. well, new overnight evacuations now lifted in the north bay. this is following a vegetation fire. this one started around 1115 last night in novato. this is near the rush creek housing development along atherton avenue forward.
6:03 am
progress was stopped at about five acres. evacuation orders were lifted around 130. this morning and firefighters are still there on the scene. they're monitoring for those hotspots. the cause of this fire is still under investigation. now, this fire happened not far from another brush fire, which broke out in rural part of novato yesterday. this one starting before five yesterday morning and marinwood area. that fire burned a total of 18 acres. we know crews say that 34 year old colin crooks later admitted to starting that fire. this after he was detained by investigators. he's facing multiple charges and a superintendent working to move his district forward as a new school year starts today in the bay's. bob redell joins us live from the san ramon valley unified school district. and, bob, what would you say is the biggest challenge here this new superintendent is facing? a future shortfall of about16.5 million. we're outside coyote

creek elementary here, one of the many schools in the san ramon valley unified school district. marcus and laura classes will be starting a little bit after sunrise this morning, which you can see is coming up here on what looks like a very beautiful first day of school. our colleague kris sanchez recently spoke with the new superintendent, cgi karma. he's the new superintendent of the san ramon valley unified school district, who comes here from fremont unified, where he held the same position. superintendent karma says san ramon valley will be solvent this school year, but will face some very difficult financial challenges next school year in 2025, 26. that's when the district will have to make $16.5 million in reductions. reductions that he and his staff will spend this year trying to identify. we are definitely seeing some financial challenges based on how the state had miscalculated or mis projected their total revenue for the year last year, and districts across the state, including san ramon valley unified school district,
6:05 am
are dealing with that burden of having to address the shortfall in revenue that's coming forward from the state. and so we will have many challenges in front of us to identify how we can reduce our expenditures without negatively impacting student programs in our personnel. so, yes, enrollment is declining in san ramon valley unified like it is in many california school districts. but superintendent says school closures are not on his radar right now. i bring this up because other districts in the bay area have already closed schools because of declining enrollment. reporting live here in san ramon, bob redell today in the bay. all right. thank you, bob. and make sure you stay with us here on today in the bay, because all week long we are taking you all across the bay area with back to school coverage. if you missed any of it, you can watch wherever you stream nbc bay area is your streaming place to be. we are streaming 24/7 on roku, pluto and other platforms. now

6:09 am
and path of this storm looking here at home, it's going to be a day like yesterday where we're seeing our weather pattern stable and temperatures ranging very widely across the bay area. but for your microclimate, expect more of the same weather that you saw yesterday. and mike heading out on the roads and where can we find some gas prices for a little bit less? well, you know, some folks are heading out now again, back to school for a number of schools through santa rosa area. so those gas prices, you might fill the tank for 4.39. that's the best you can do at golf on sonoma highway. a number of districts up in that area. starting today, san mateo county redwood city, along with other districts in that area, belmont and the like. they have the best with 3.99 at central gas on broadway and then alameda county. we'll call out fremont unified will give the gold star to star gas on grimmer boulevard. 3.95 watch those school zones. and of course, update gasbuddy.com to share those prices with each other. as we look on the roadways, we are following the continued

additional $150 million marcus in funding for research. all right scott thank you. 646 for you this morning. so when it comes to combating our climate in crisis, zero emission vehicles always considered key. and but today, you know, the next wave of electric work trucks off road equipment and transit busses take center stage in oakland today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live outside the arena this morning. and kris, we're talking about dozens of companies getting a chance to kind of shine at this point. right. so at this point, we all know what our small passenger zero emission vehicles look like. but this is an opportunity for companies to come out and see what their options are as their bread trucks, their garbage trucks, their school busses try to go zero emission as well. i have tom brotherton here from cal star. thanks so much for joining us this morning. thank you. i think the biggest, newest thing
6:48 am
is that they kind of look like regular trucks. absolutely. from the outside you really don't know. the way you know is you don't hear them and you don't smell them. all right. let's see. they're going to be rolling here behind us. yeah. our friends at tech equipment brought down three of the trucks. and as you can't hear a thing, you really can't. and these look just like the same trucks that are out on the streets today. lots of these. the second right here. these are the tractor trailer trucks. we've got nine different manufacturers. all of the major manufacturers now make battery electric and in some cases hydrogen fuel cell versions of those very same trucks. i have to tell you, you've all sat in traffic before. it's wild to not hear those trucks rumbling by. there is a deadline, though, for companies, especially the ones with the biggest fleets, the stinkiest most polluting vehicles to get off the road. right? so california, over the next ten years is going to start implementing rules that require fleets to start buying zero emission trucks. and over the course of these coming decades or so, they'll at the end have to have all zero emission
6:49 am
trucks. but it starts with smaller fractions of purchases where you're right, the largest fleets, the most heavily polluted vehicles will have to start turning over those vehicles soon. so we're giving fleets an opportunity to come down here today, kick the tires, drive the trucks, get a feel for what it's like, and to see 59 different trucks all available today and off road equipment. so we've got things like excavators, backhoes, front end loaders and i think we're seeg . yeah we've got a boat. we've got a zero emission boat in the background. so all of this equipment is zero emission. it's all on the market today. you know companies, you know, business people might be scratching their heads going, how am i going to make this happen? times are tough, but there are incentives. yes. the state of california has generous incentives for both the trucks as well as off road equipment. it's available today. come down and learn the incentives. you can get up to several hundred thousand dollars for the most expensive, largest trucks. all right, well, maybe we'll trade
