out this morning with low 50s in san francisco and a breezy wind. it's in the upper 50s in palo alto and in san jose it is 60 degrees. as you're getting ready to step out the door. looking at our highs for this afternoon, we're u in concord in dublin, 82 degrees and in hayward, 77, while half moon bay will be in the mid 60s. much of the north bay in the upper 80s. so you can see the range and temperatures that we'll see today as well as tomorrow, with some slight cooling in spots for the weekend. so we'll get a look ahead. that's coming up in just a few minutes. and mike, you've been tracking something on the san mateo bridge. yeah, we were looking for the lights to have any any problems. it's not westbound. westbound is just fine. your commute average for this morning. it's eastbound coming over to the hayward side. an earlier crash still on the grid, right near the toll plaza. now, the camera is a little bit farther out the toll plaza, right where it's marked. but the toll plaza is actually over here. in any case, no slowing on the sensors. we'll continue to follow that until it clears from the chp blotter. but there are

let's take a live look outside in san jose. it's going to be another clear and sunny day. and as we're getting the kids out the door for school and in milpitas, we are going to see temperatures in the mid 60s at drop off time. hopefully it's a great start to the school year and it's going to be very busy around those school zones again today. it's going to be up to about 80 degrees as the kids are getting out and then maybe heading to the park to enjoy the rest of the afternoon. let's go into the south bay with a look at what to expect today. it's still at or slightly warmer than normal, up to 86 degrees in san jose, 90 in gilroy. and we're not seeing as many of those 90s across parts of the inland east bay. but we're still up to 92 in antioch and concord today. upper 70s for oakland, hayward and up to 84 in fremont. while in palo alto, it will be in the low 80s mid 60s for half moon bay. you can see how these temperatures are still widely ranging, just depending on where you are. if
5:21 am
you're driving from one spot going to another, you're going to notice that difference in those temperatures. and so we're mostly in the 60s in san francisco, upper 70s for the north bay and up to 87 in clear lake. for this afternoon. an area of low pressure will be dropping in, bringing some rain very close to the bay area. farther to the north along the coast. that's expected to happen on saturday, and we just keep the same setup that we'll see going into next week. and in some spots, our temperatures will still get pretty hot. we'll see that in brentwood. at least we do get a break for saturday. but then sunday temperatures are coming back up to upper 80s and the 90s in the forecast for much of next week. and once again, that's for the inland area. so we're going to start to put those 90s back on the map there and along the coast. we're staying in the 60s here until about next tuesday. mike, what does it look like now heading to the san mateo bridge back here. take another look here. this time the eastbound direction seems fine. it's westbound. a new incident reported somewhere

tossed in a san francisco court today because of as you mentioned there, too much time passing. now, both the district attorney's office and the public defender's office have gone on record to say that the courts are to blame because they did not try these cases in a timely manner. now, this all stems from a state appeals court ruling back in july that said, a san francisco woman was denied her right to a speedy trial because of a years long delay that was attributed to the pandemic. the chronicle is reporting that woman lynette mendoza, was charged in 2021 with two misdemeanors for allegedly driving drunk, and a third for driving at night without her headlights on. she pleaded not guilty and was scheduled for trial years later. now, mendoza reportedly had her trial postponed six times. earlier this year, the public defender's office sought dismissal of the charges under the sixth amendment, which guarantees a person's right to a speedy trial. their motion was originally denied, with the denial upheld by a superior court's appellate division. but
5:34 am
another panel on the same appeals court ruled that conditions had changed and postponements of criminal cases were no longer justified. now, several appeals similar to the san francisco woman's case are reportedly pending in the first district, and hundreds of misdemeanor cases in superior court are also potentially beyond the statutory last day to begin trial. this is something that we will continue to follow today. we'll have updates online at nbcbayarea.com. in san francisco, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. thanks for the latest there. ginger. well, a grieving mother is opening up about the murder of her 33 year old daughter, herself a mother of eight. this is after she confronted drug dealers in her oakland neighborhood. that gunman last week shot and killed maria ramos on hilton way. now her mother was at the scene when the deadly encounter happened not far from her home. blanca velasco. velasco says that ramos

lot of people are very devastated by what's happened with inflation and all of the other things. so we're doing this as a intellectual speech. you're all intellectuals today. now, something that may have caught his advisers off guard. trump proposed 20% tariffs on all imported goods. he usually talks about 10% tariffs, usually anything made from china, which is many of the products you would find in a big box discount store when the american government, remember, puts a tariff on something, it's the americans that pay the tariff. economists worry putting a tariff on imported goods, particularly 20%, would create enormous inflation. democratic candidate for vice president tim walz has agreed to a vice presidential debate on the 1st of october. on cbs, he said earlier he can't wait to debate j.d. vance. the vance campaign says it's aware of the offer but has not yet committed, and president biden held a gathering

our climate in crisis. wildfire activity in recent years is scorching more acres than ever, damaging hundreds of millions of trees in california. but a new grant from cal fire will help to plant more trees after fires to replenish forests in cooperation with cal forest public and private landowners can, across the west, get seedlings of conifer trees to help recover with those fires destroyed. nick larham from cal forest explains why this is so important. it's because of climate change. the recent wildfires that we're experiencing, they're burning with such intensity that they're burning the ground even. and that's killing seed that would naturally regenerate and grow trees out in the landscape. and so we're having to assist that process by by starting the seedlings here at the nursery so that they can then be planted in those areas that are not going to regrow. cal forest has grown
5:50 am
and shipped over 400 million seedlings across the west in the past 25 years, and this additional funding helps them collect more seeds and replace equipment. they're also looking for volunteers to hike out to those remote areas, to plant those seeds and change the future of our planet. if you're interested, we'll have the link to cal forest nurseries on our website, nbcbayarea.com. look for this story under the climate and crisis tab. thanks, gary. well, wine harvest is officially underway in the east bay. today in the bay's. bob redell joins us live from las positas vineyards in livermore, where workers are going to be picking those grapes there up before even the sun. how is this year's growing season going? bob well, that's a good question. we're asking for brant amos, the winemaker here at las positas vineyards. hey, good to see you. good seeing you. we see the workers out here like we see usually around this time of the year, though. this is a little bit earlier. yeah. is there something to read into that?
5:51 am
well, it's, you know, kind of a warm summer. so. so definitely sped up. i live out here, too. it was. i thought this was one of the hottest days. we've had more than kind of. yeah, yeah. in the hundreds. yeah, we did have the mild spring to start, and so that helped push stuff along and with plenty of rain. these vines are just nice and happy. i'll let jesse walk past us so you can show the guys picking. these are white grapes. these are verdelho. these are portuguese varietal, and you, obviously, you pick them for people who aren't familiar. you pick them overnight because you want the hot days and you let them cool off overnight. and that's the time you want to pick. exactly. you want the fruit basically as cool as you can get it, that way it's just helps preserve quality aromas, freshness in the wine. okay. and you were saying earlier when you came out here. hey i think we're going to pick about four and a half tons, but they've been picking for about 30 to 60 minutes already. and now you're saying it's gonna be a little bit more. so that's a good surprise, right? oh yeah. yeah, yeah. so it's fortunately picking out a little bit heavier than expected. and i'll never,
5:52 am
never, never say no to that. so and you, we, we knew you were going to be picking out here last week. so you made the decision with the, the right of first refusal last night? of course. so how did you know that it was going to be good. you know, seven days in advance. well, it's really just, you know, i've spent a lot of time with with this vineyard, with this varietal, grapes in general. and so i had a feeling it was about time and knowing that i could always cancel up to, you know, the night before, as needed. and this variety of verdello you won with the san francisco chronicle wine competition last year. so you obviously have some street cred here. what do you like about what you've tasted so far in these grapes this year, well, just a great vivid flavors, and i think the aromatics are going to be going to be, pretty much amazing this year, these guys are moving pretty fast. let's walk down here because i want to i want to get a taste of this. they're clearly are working hard here. come over here. you can see the. what do you like about
5:53 am
this when you look at this and kind of talk to me like you're selling me on these grapes. of course, well, you know, look at the cluster. it's. it's a little bit loose, so, you know, that that helps, the grapes dry out if we do get any rain, so it just adds to a better, better quality, skins are just just. you can see they're just, kind of green, green to yellow. so they're, they're, they're just perfect. and they're delicious. tastes good to me. yeah. all the flavors in the skin. seeds are nice and brown and crunchy, which is right where we want it. all right, so, the taste is excellent. good, good. right. hey, brant. thank you very much. of course. thank you, guys. and thank you for letting us come out here and get in your guys way. this morning. so, the, by the way, the blessing of the grapes next wednesday here in the valley, it's the annual tradition between 1130 and 2 will be at three steve's winery. and of course, that's where the local clergy come out to wish you guys a great harvest. so,
5:54 am
back to you guys. i feel like you either need to get out of the way. they got seeds, man. they got the seeds. the table grapes, or should i or should i just. yeah. put it in my pocket or what do you want me to do? oh, yeah. you could grow your own. yeah, i was gonna say that might save it for later. so next week is the blessing of the grapes. they are very good grapes. very good. all right. bob's out there eating breakfast. you better move out of the way. i'd love to see how fast those workers, you know. yeah. a dedicated and, you know, on their back. so. and we thank you. the fruits of the harvest. yeah. all right. yes. it has been a very warm summer in the valleys. and it continues today. but it's been cool along the coast. so areas in between, like san jose has had some really mild weather. and we're going to see that again as the kids are going back to school. take a look at cupertino starting out the morning at 59 degrees, nice and sunny and at pick up time will be at about 80 degrees. so comfortably warm. and another really nice day with our highs
5:55 am
up to 90 in gilroy today. that's the one of the hotter spots. while we'll see some highs in the low 80s for cupertino and los gatos and much of the east bay, we're in the low 90s for walnut creek over toward antioch, with some mid 80s in livermore and in hayward, as well as oakland, 77 now in daly city. it's 66. but then when you head down to palo alto, it will be 82 degrees and 70. in the mission district, while the marina district will be in the mid 60s in mill valley, 78 degrees and about ten degrees warmer in santa rosa and 20 degrees cooler in bodega bay. so we're seeing a wide range in temperatures and this weekend we're going to get a slightly stronger ocean breeze and a slight cool down for the coast. we'll even be watching out for some rain just off to our north. and then in spots like brentwood, we do get a brief break from the high heat, but it just returns as we go into next week. we're going from 83 on saturday to 96 on tuesday, so
5:56 am
for most of us, we're not seeing as much of a change in our temperatures. still pretty hot in the inland areas and slightly hotter next week in san francisco. it's very mild with upper seconds and drizzle on saturday once again. mike, they're starting that san mateo bridge. yeah, i think this is the third time this morning we've had an incident on the span two westbound and one eastbound. the one westbound. there's nothing on the chp blotter. that means this was initiated in the field. not someone calling it. so either the bridge crew or the chp noticed something. someone in need here. looks like a flat tire. perhaps flashing lights fewer than before. they may be calming the situation down. traffic still moves smoothly, but there is slowing the brakes tap in the area, and that's why those speed sensors show that mid span again, that's westbound. as the volume builds out of hayward. a pretty standard pattern outside of that, the south bay. another crash reported north 101 right around oakland road, but not a lot of detail and no slowing just yet. a smoother drive right here as you cut through 680 and down in toward walnut creek. back to you. thanks, mike. well, happening now, chevron is making
5:57 am
a big promise to richmond leaders. the company is promising to shell out more than half $1 billion to the city over the next decade. now, that agreement came ahead of the city leaders pulling the proposed ballot measure from the november ballot. if approved, chevron would have had to pay a $1 barrel tax on oil and raw materials refined at its richmond facility. tracking, ernesto. still ahead at 6:00, a look at the damage already caused in the u.s. as the storm churns toward bermuda as a hurricane. then all new this morning, preserving lake tahoe. the millions of dollars being invested to address the challenges posed by millions of tourists visiting every single year. keep it here.
