joining us is the ceo of panorama education. good to see you. thanks for being with us. you design first of all, what is chronic absenteeism. >> refers to a student who misses 10% or more of school days, to put that in context, pre-covid we had about 15% of students miss that much school, these days it's about 25% over the last year, so 13 million students who are missing more than 10% of days in school. >> that's at lot of students and critical learning, talk to us about why, why are students missing? >> so part of our panorama is to look at why students are missing school, for high school, traditionally we think a lot about attendance reasons, couldn't find transportation or a parent didn't bring a student to school, we want to look at the school factors, we found at

the younger grades, school safety is a really big deal, that students tell us there's bullying and violence and that leaves them really concerned. as you get to middle school it's safety and it's whether students think they can succeed. by high school, it comes down to whether students have close adult relations a teacher who believes in you. >> maybe an obvious question, what does this all mean for those students, right, what impact do you see? >> so if a student is chronically absent that's big deal, they fall behind academically and they're not getting the skills needed for college, career, life after school. >> you talked about concerns around safety, specifically bullying, what schools can do to foster a safe environment? >> yeah, so, one, building relations with students is a big

deal, every student has a teacher who knows their name, really basic. asking students what's driving safety, a fear for bullying, about safety in the bathrooms and the best schools ask students what's causing them to feel safe at school and they do something about it. >> we saw this absenteeism during covid, during the pandemic, so it's something that state and federal agencies started focusing on, what's been done to try to address it. >> right now, we see a lot of great work, one of the leaders we've seen the state of rhode island where commissioner green organized across the entire state to get every district getting every student back in the classroom. you're seeing in every corner schools creating attendance plans. i think our ask is that schools

closed for hours after a tesla electric big rig caught fire. chp says the tesla truck went off eastbound 80 at the off ramp near emigrant gap in placer county, and then crashed into some trees. firefighters confirmed the truck's battery caught on fire, spread to nearby brush. they say electric fires are still a newer thing, and crews are still trying to learn how to handle this situation. roadway in both directions at 80, shut down around emigrant gap in placer county. chp says the driver, fortunately of that semi truck, was able to escape to safety. first week of school in san francisco could be a little chilly. here's cinthia pimentel with our forecast. let's check in san francisco. it's the first day of school, the first week. and guess what? we're off to a mild start for upper 60s for today to some low 70s. nice and beautiful out there for tomorrow. and then we'll start a little bit of a cooling trend into the second half of the week as we're tracking a system to our north
