laura garcia is off this morning, and i know we're going to get a look at the traffic commute this wednesday, but before that, we're going to have a nice start to the morning with meteorologist kari hall. i got out of the car outside and i was like, wow. san jose is different than san francisco. i don't need this. yeah. you know, it's a little bit warmer to start out this morning, and it's going to be a warm afternoon for some. but at least we do have overall a fairly cool start with temperatures in the 50s and low 60s. it is a little bit warmer in san jose 64 degrees right now, and it is 56 degrees in san francisco with a breezy wind. that is where we are going to keep it cool today with our highs staying in the 60s for this afternoon, starting out with some low clouds, some peeks of sunshine. but then becoming mostly sunny as we head for those upper seconds. today, before the valleys, we are going to have another very warm day. we're back to those mid to upper 80s for later on this afternoon. we'll take a look ahead to some lower temperatures. even a

slight chance of rain coming up. but mike you still have that closure continuing from yesterday. yeah. contra costa county will show you over all these freeways do appear to move smoothly as far as the sensors go. we are talking about this crash on highway four. so listen up. if you take the crash out of the pinole and hercules as we're looking toward the eastbound direction, the eastbound direction of highway four is blocked. right now, as you head away from westbound 80. that's the. that's the interstate 80. the east shore freeway. a crash yesterday afternoon happened along this stretch. as you're heading to the area eastbound away from i-80, and it's still closed because of materials that are spilled and some damage to some poles. and other investigation and repair work that has to be done. in fact, they're not clear when it's going to reopen. so you have to take this route, which is a longer route getting over from i-80 eastbound to coming skyway. that gives you the corner instead of takes the corner. but that is the clearest route until further notice. back to you. good to know. thanks, mike. developing right now oakland school leaders are only now

state unemployment rolls for a more precise number. so we may find out today job growth is not as strong as we thought, which, weirdly, would make wall street happy because it would further pressure the fed to rate cut rates. a judge in texas, meantime, told the federal trade commission it did not have the power to ban non-compete agreements. those agreements prevent employees from quitting one company and joining a competitor. the ftc said they were illegal. most companies facts but a federal judge says that ban goes beyond the ftc's power. we'll see if the agency appeals the ruling. tesla ceo elon musk posted this to his social network x, saying he's ready for a job in the trump administration. he and trump had a tech plagued interview on x a few weeks ago, and they floated the idea of musk finding wasteful spending in government. speaking of musk, accountants at

pitchbook have taken a look at the 13 billion huske to buy x and determined it was the worst thing that ever happened to them since the 2009 financial crisis, because banks can't unload the debt, they can't find anybody to take over the loans. now, musk is still paying on these loans. he's still paying exorbitant interest rates. but banks, as you well know, if you have a mortgage, they sell off loans. they don't want to hold the loans on their books. the problem is nobody will take them because they're just not worth what they were when he took over twitter, because twitter is not worth what it was going to say, because that money is probably coming from other places, not necessarily from twitter. right? well, right. it's money that the banks loaned musk to buy twitter and he owes them. but now the banks can't sell that debt to somebody else. they take over this loan for us because nobody will take it. but it's not generating from twitter. no, that's true. yeah. all right. well, maybe that sink that he's carrying in will be a star. one of the worst puns of all time.

5:21 am
those temperatures fairly quickly as we go throughout the morning. but right now, we're all starting out with a clean slate, a nice, cool morning and temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s. for the most part, we're at 59 in livermore, 64 in san jose, and it's 56 in san mateo, 58 degrees. as you head out the door in sonoma. and happy first day of school for the kids in gilroy. today we are going to see our morning in the upper 50s so jacket weather, but take a look at how warm it's going to be at pick up. time will be in the mid 80s for later today. looking at our highs for the south bay will be in the mid 80s. once again. even some upper 80s for gilroy and then as we move over toward the east bay, temperatures will range from mid 70s in oakland to low 80s for martinez to upper 80s from concord to pleasanton, 87 there today and 78 degrees in redwood city, half moon bay in the mid 60s. and in san francisco, we're in the low 70s for downtown, while in the outer sunset, upper 60s and low 80s for napa, as
5:22 am
well as novato. but then we're in the upper 80s from santa rosa on up to clear lake. so looking ahead, we've been talking a lot about this chance of showers coming in late on friday into saturday, and it looks like for areas just to our north, there will be some wet weather coming in, while the bay area will have a chance of some spotty showers, mainly early saturday morning and then looking ahead to some hotter temperatures. unfortunately, that little taste of fall only lasts a day or two. and then we're back to the high heat with the inland areas close to 100 degrees for the middle of next week. i know we don't want that, but we'll be watching out for cooler weather ahead. mike, you have a look in cocoa county? yeah, we're looking back here for highway four. got confirmation. chp told us that they did reopen all lanes for highway four. so this is the first time since yesterday afternoon that highway four out of hercules has been open, heading over in toward that way, basically over toward 680, just

getting off the benicia bridge. so everything is now fine for the morning commute through that portion of contra costa county. two crashes reported on a westbound highway four. there's a little build, but not because of the crashes. it's the morning commute i'm watching. 242 a little bit slower sensors back to you. thanks a lot, mike. well, next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds school is back in session. and so is a textbook cyber scam. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura with a warning for parents, eachers t

try to get and curate your information. so it's really, really important that we stay vigilant during this time. now some advice to secure your wi-fi. doctor j recommends creating a separate wireless network for your kids. their friends, and perhaps any device the school sends home. doctor j says keep those gadgets separate from your home's main wi-fi. she says you can easily add a new wireless network to your router with a small free tweak. not sure how well contact your internet provider or look it up in your router's instruction manual. back to you. thanks, chris. well next top stories we're following today, including wait for it. it's the return of snow in the sierra. and is it that time already? here is a live look for you right here at palisades tahoe ski resort ahead. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the incoming storm that may leave the first dusting of the new season. is that elsa in the background? a coyote sighting in sunnyvale. the

the united center in chicago, home of the chicago bulls, rocking last night with democrats. you're going to want to turn your volume up for this one. this is today in the bay good morning. i'm ginger conejero saab in for laura today, and i'm marcus washington. hey, want to get you started with that forecast? meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect out there. heading out the door this morning. beautiful sights. but how are the temperatures for us? it looks pretty nice to start out. it's a little bit milder in san jose. we're seeing those temperatures starting out this morning in the mid 60s. but elsewhere we're in the 50s in san francisco, 63 in walnut creek, and a breezy wind to start out our morning. happy first day of school for the kids in campbell today. and all the schools starting around the bay area here. we're going to see temperatures in the low 60s and nice and sunny for the start of the day. that sunshine continues and at pick up time will be at about 81 degrees. so we'll take
5:32 am
a look at the rest of our forecast coming up. mike, you were checking on the drive across the bay. yeah. the volume is picking up now as you head over toward treasure island on your side. as we approach the city, things may start to dip. as far as those speed sensors go, there's a bigger volume at the bay bridge toll plaza, but we don't see any backup and the metering lights should be turned on within the next 7 or 8 minutes. we'll track that very closely. but so far. oh, there you go. the sensors are slowing near the bottom of the screen as they're passing by. treasure island on the bay bridge, top of the screen, highway 37 and over on the right. highway 4. so your typical distribution, but 242 continues with some slower sensors down through concord and pleasant hill. so we'll keep watching that portion of contra costa county. and at the bottom of the screen, a little bit of slowing starts. northbound 101 for san jose. back to you. thanks. a lot, mike. the united center in chicago was rocking last night with the second day of the democratic national convention. scott mcgrew gets three minutes to tell us all about it, and scott, i watched last night. it's going to be hard for you to pick the best
5:33 am
and put it in three minutes. yeah, good luck, but you can do it right? okay. yeah i mean, all right, think about this. two obama spoke douglas emhoff, the second gentleman of the united states, bernie sanders, chuck schumer, there is a lot to pick from. let's start first, though, with the first lady, michelle obama, speaking about donald trump. if we see a mountain in front of us, we don't expect there to be an escalator waiting to take us to the top. no who's going to tell him? who's going to tell him that the job he's currently seeking might just be one of those black jobs? the former first lady, referring to a statement donald trump made at a convention of black journalists that immigrants were taking, quote, black jobs. former president obama spoke thereafter about trump's attempts to kill a republican written bill that would have helped secure the border. he killed a bipartisan immigration deal written in part by one of
5:34 am
the most conservative republicans in congress that would have helped secure our southern border because he thought trying to actually solve the problem would hurt his campaign. he doesn't do not boo vote. your borders call me bulletproof love. forgive me. up. meantime, an hour's drive north in milwaukee, wisconsin, harris and walz rallied the voters there in the very same stadium that hosted the republican national convention. walls will speak at the democratic convention tonight, and then harris will wrap it up with her acceptance of the nomination on thursday night. now, if you didn't watch any of this last night, it makes sense. maybe you're not interested in politics. maybe a speech by chuck schumer doesn't make you shiver. but if there's one takeaway, it is the enthusiasm, the energy that democrats have
5:35 am
somehow unbottled. case in point the rather routine state roll call where delegates from each state announce their vote to nominate. it is usually pretty boring, or it used to be georgia. how do you cast your vote? yeah ladies and gentlemen, we are here tonight to officially nominate kamala harris for president. five guillaume with another round of shots. turn out for what? turn out for what? turn out for what? yeah. turn out the what? let's go, let's go! turn out for what? hey, everybody, get your hands
5:36 am
up! hey, everybody, get your hands up! hey everybody, get your hands up now! hey we're not going back. we're not going back. we're not going back. yep. i blew an entire minute of my time just on that. tonight is the night. three of the dnc, former speaker nancy pelosi, former president clinton will both speak, followed by vice presidential candidate governor tim walz. full coverage starts tonight right here on nbc bay area. okay, scott, that was that's what i got for you. all right. well, developing right now, people in one south bay city are being warned to be on the lookout for coyotes today in the bay's. bob redell is live for us this morning. and bob, people with small pets. well, they should be most concerned. correct. because coyotes could go after your small cats or dog. generally, they're not a threat to people. the sunnyvale department of public safety
5:37 am
ginger, that is the government agency in the south bay that's issuing this warning there. they say the coyotes were spotted or coyotes, however you want to pronounce them, were spotted in the early morning hours and at dusk in this neighborhood at blue jay drive and locks and art way, which is not far from the lawrence expressway. with the warm temperatures, it's possible the coyotes are looking for water, which could be in someone's yard. and that's where, again, they could encounter a small cat or dog and then attack. just a couple of weeks ago, a coyote was seen on surveillance video carrying a cat from a yard in redwood city. there have also been attacks in san francisco this summer. there are three coyotes that regularly roam my neighborhood in livermore. i live in a somewhat rural part. this is video of them to two of them. video of two of them. recently. they've been skittish around me. i do have two outdoor cats who've been, go out and about. they've never been attacked by them, as far as we know or at least they're smart enough to avoid them, though i will say about a
5:38 am
year or two ago, my daughter rescued a stray cat from san francisco, brought it back home to livermore. it lived indoors and outdoors. unfortunately, it disappeared about a month after she brought it home. and we think one of the coyotes got it. so again, if you have small animals, i can speak from personal experience. they are a threat. if you do encounter a coyote who isn't skittish, experts say you want to pick up your small animals. get between you and your small child. if you have them out with you and if need be, you want to stand tall, wave your arms in the air and make loud noises. reporting live bob redell today in the bay. well, those are some great tips, bob. i mean, i know we've got some coyotes not too far. there's a coyote down near our home, and it makes me very nervous with the children around, with the babies around. so. good, good. great tips. thank you. well, 538 for you right now we have new developments just coming in within the last 20 minutes. highway four and contra costa county has just reopened. this is after an accident yesterday. chp says the driver of a porsche
5:39 am
crashed into a telephone pole at highway four and franklin canyon road. this is in hercules. that pole fell across all of those lanes. the driver is okay and dui not suspected. the owners of one south bay restaurant are facing their own pricey bill after burglars stole the cash register. one co-owner showed us the damage to john's on willow glen. he says thieves this week came through the roof to steal items, including the cash register. they came through the roof. now it's a damage to the kitchen. that's really costly. he believes the burglars entered through the rooftop vent, and now the gas lines are broken. what? thieves pocketed a couple hundred dollars. the damage, however, is more like $4,000. i was saying like, why do they do that to me? i mean, do i deserve that? what am i doing wrong? you know, i guess i wish i can see the people. and i said, please.
5:40 am
well, he says he filed a police report, but the chances for an arrest are even lower because his security cameras did not capture any significant images. also in the south bay, a longtime local leader is apparently ready to move on. leaders in bernalillo county, new mexico, are currently saying that the current santa clara county supervisor, cindy chavez, will relocate there in november to take the county manager position. this is all pending. the county's final board approval next week. chavez is actually from new mexico, and she's calling her appointment an honor. she's lived in the south bay for decades, having previously held a seat on san jose city council, where she served as vice mayor. and she's being termed out from the board at the end of this year. well, 540. now let's take a live look at palisades tahoe ski resort. now, don't pull out your ski boots. just yet. yeah, not yet, but maybe just some lined. i
5:41 am
don't know, some lined slippers. there's some fresh snow on the horizon. however, in fact, as soon as this weekend, the sierra may see its first snowfall of the year to levels as low as 7000ft. as for ski season, well, it's still on track for a late november start, but all that, of course, can change kari. she's got the scoop on this. what kind of weekend snow are we talking about here? it definitely won't look anything like those pictures that we showed with all of the roads covered and people out there putting on chains and all that stuff. so it's a very light dusting, and i think it's going to be closer to 8000ft, where we see some of those light snow flurries, but we are going to get a seasonably cool storm that's going to be coming in. this area of low pressure brings in some rain and for those highest peaks, once again, up above, i think 8000ft or even higher, there will be a slight chance that there may be a wintry mix changing over to rain, but right behind that, we're going to see this next
5:42 am
high coming in. and that's going to ramp up those temperatures. and we'll start out early next week with more of that summer heat. so we'll be talking more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, you're looking at the commuters in walnut creek. yeah, we're looking at 680 southbound. that's your commute direction, the volume starting to build, but still good spacing. you could even see that from this glimpse as folks are coming around the bend. this is as you head down toward highway 24 and the split. that's right about here in walnut creek. you do see still more slowing. and in fact, it's building at southbound 242 that started early this morning. highway 4 now showing the slower drive from pittsburgh all the way in toward pleasant hill for the southbound 680 drive as well. highway 37 typical slowing. and the bay bridge now starting to build up that volume. getting into san francisco, the note today at oracle park, the giants play a midday game and you know how that goes. that means more traffic around the lunch hour. but also that means the game will get out about the same time as more folks will be leaving the city. so keep that in mind as you leave past 280. the extension there getting onto the

bay bridge, there is a new report of a crash over in san mateo. i'll check on that. speed sensors are fine though. 101 right around 92. in the south bay we have your typical build starting up in the northbound direction for 101. and also cheyenne is playing a concert at sap center. so for fans of cheyenne, keep that in mind. and for other folks, just watch for those pedestrians crossing from the parking lot. back over to you. thanks a lot, mike. well, a renewed effort to snuff out cigarettes. they can remove their licenses. they can penalize them. they have a whole set of enforcement triggers that they can use. they just now have to just make sure that they're doing it. still ahead this morning on today in the bay, the new push to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco and vaping as students head back to school. and bennifer officially breaking up this time, we think forever. the new details on the celebrity split that everyone can't seem to stop talking about. we'll

5:47 am
we're looking at this traffic. the golden gate bridge. oh my goodness. well, the traffic at the top, you can see coming out of the robin williams tunnel just fine. i'll give you a better look at the rest of your commute coming up. thanks mike. all right. take a look at your tv screen right now. okay. look at this. look closely. looks like watermelon. right? well, upon further inspection there. not so much. agents there. over with the eye opening. u.s. customs agents. well, they realize that this is the border. what you're looking at right here. yeah. not watermelons. they say this is really $5 million worth of methamphetamin. if you look closely there, you can see right there that look like watermelons. but agents say that the man driving a commercial tractor trailer actually tried to cross the border with a cargo wrapped in bright green plastic, making it look like those watermelons seedless to say or make that. needless to say, he is now in the hands of homeland security. wow. i know that is a that is not so sweet. i could have
5:48 am
really fooled some people there. all right, well, tobacco opponents are trying to get the word out about the dangers of smoking and vaping as students head back to school. listen up. the fda says more than 2 million minors use e-cigarettes nationwide. now, the american lung association warns that tobacco use at a young age can not only be dangerous for their health, but put them at serious risk for a lifetime addiction. the fda has approved the sale of about three dozen e-cigarette products, but other illegal products also remain available. so you will see on these products all kinds of flavors that are primarily attractive to kids bubble gum, cotton candy, lemonade. we've now seen products that now have kind of gaming devices built into the products. so the kids are attracted. these are not again, marketing strategies that are meant to appeal to adults. it really is predatory behavior on the part of industry and vaping industry to get our kids addicted to these products. tobacco free advocates are
5:49 am
calling on the fda to help get these illegal products off the shelves. they're also pressing the white house to move forward with plans to ban menthol cigarettes, a plan that was first delayed back in april. now one south bay graduate student and her family narrowly escaped a fire, and now she's using her talents to better understand fires and protect us all. now, garvin thomas has more in this morning's bay area. proud good morning everybody. there is a south bay graduate student who is taking a pretty scary experience from her past and using it to hopefully help others. alana matt king is studying meteorology at the fire weather center at san jose state university. her interest in the topic is very personal. her family came within a few feet of losing their santa rosa home in the tubbs fire in 2017. that experience, as well as being evacuated five more times in the following years, meant that alana was thinking about and worrying about fire a lot. well,
5:50 am
as alana puts it, if it was going to occupy her brain all the time, she might as well do something with it. so she now studies the diablo winds, the same winds that fed the fire that ravaged her community in the hopes of giving people more warning time when the next fire burns their way. you can experience the whole story at nbc bay area.com/bay area proud, as well as hundreds of other stories of people being good to each other in the bay area. always some nice feel good. now let's talk baseball. all the giants really need right now is one good run to get them right back into the thick of the wild card race. so maybe a visit from the lowly white sox will help. chicago will help, rather, because chicago is by far the worst team in baseball. last night against the sox, the giants held up their end some timely hitting and nine strikeouts from pitcher robbie ray gave them the four one win, their third in a row. now the teams close out their series this afternoon as mike was
5:51 am
saying at oracle, so don't mind the traffic. go giants. the a's, meanwhile, are just trying to build around a future nowhere near oakland. but don't ask siri. i mean, well, we mean jose siri against tampa yesterday, the a's pitching delivered, but series home run for the rays was the only score as the a's lost one. nothing. i was thinking about the giants there. i was like, well, hey, if you beat the worst team, what does that really say? that's okay. you take a win. a win is a win if it'll get you to the wild card race, i will take it right? spoken like a native. well, i know happy people. happy baseball fans. maybe not so happy bennifer fans. it is a sad day for those fans because there's no need to ask any more. will they or won't they? yeah they won't. yeah hollywood's most popular power couple. officially over. this is after only two years. so new court documents reveal jennifer lopez and ben affleck have filed for divorce. i think jennifer actually filed for divorce.
5:52 am
there we will have a we will have, you know, a lot of people do have their thoughts about this happily ever after. when the two famously rekindled their love and got married just two years ago. but the documents list the date of separation was last april. one source telling tmz that the couple do not have a prenup. i would think that they probably would just say, you know what? we're just going to separate everything equally. i can't see them, you know? yeah, i'm just thinking about the music video on the yacht. i mean, i guess that's forever not going to be played again. it will be played again. but not in real life, i guess. not. keep the memory. all right. 551 right now. so trending for you this morning, a dynamite race in washington last weekend. that's right. it was a 2024 t-rex world championship races. and people dressed up in inflatable dinosaur costumes. and they raced to the finish line. my rex
5:53 am
girlfriend won it easily. more than 200 people dashed 100 yards in full costume at emerald downs in auburn, washington. there's one for the men, women and people over 50. the race has been going on in washington since 2017. look at that. i mean, you go, those are costumes. you go from the olympics to the t rex championships, you know, there you go. i wish they were closer. you could see. it's so funny to see them in those costumes. the heads bobbing back and forth, the tail to look at that. that person is fast, i know, is that sha'carri richardson? sha'carri richardson. right it's like in the olympics they wear little clothing to not have the wind or whatever. right. and then here it's like the tail waving and the dust. you've got like the they're hoping for a good gust. oh that's funny. i just want to hear some more of their names
5:54 am
right. yeah, that was a good one. my ex-girlfriend's girlfriend. maybe that's what ben affleck is saying. yeah, definitely. all right, well, let's get started this morning. we have kids going back to school today and other kids enjoying their last few days of summer. as we take a look at this beautiful sunrise right over dublin this morning. sun's about to come over the hills there and we're going to see sunshine. and another warm day today. now it will be windy and cooler starting tomorrow and we will have a couple of days where we get a little taste of fall. but then we're also going to be watching out for some showers very close to the bay area. it's the first day of school for the kids in gilroy. we're in the upper 50s. there may be some drifts of fog moving around, but overall mostly clear and at pick up time will be at 84 degrees. so we're going from 50 to 80. so dress appropriately for those changes and temperatures that we're going to see some mid 80s for much of the south bay. and then moving over toward the east bay in walnut creek, 88 degrees
5:55 am
for that high. yeah. so still pretty warm. and a lot of spots in hayward today. we're in the mid 70s and mid 70s for san mateo in redwood city, upper 70s in san francisco, mostly 60s and low 70s. and for the north bay we're up to about 83 in napa and 87 in clear lake. we've been talking a lot about the cooler weather, the clouds and the rain. and this very chilly storm system that's going to be coming in. also bringing in a chance of rain just to our north. i think ukiah and clear lake may see that best chance of that. and then staying north of the rest of the bay area, but then going into the rest of the weekend with a dip in temperatures. take a look at brentwood going from low 90s to mid 70s on friday. it's still going to be nice on saturday, but unfortunately there's more heat ahead. 102 degrees on tuesday. that's such a quick turnaround there. we're going to go from 70s to possibly triple digits next week. a lot
5:56 am
of hot weather coming back in after a nice little break just in time for our weekend. mike, you are watching that weight at the bay bridge. hold on. let me recover from that 102 you mentioned. all right. here we go. the fill in at the bay bridge toll plaza. it was going pretty gradually, and we're just now starting to see the stack up over the last 2 or 3 minutes here at the bay bridge so that's a pretty good volume of traffic coming in. no big surprises there. slowing through richmond. that indicates more volume coming down for the upper east shore freeway. i told you, we get a better look. the speed sensors over here across the golden gate bridge. just fine. and yes, those clouds are above the deck. we're just from our camera. we had trouble seeing them as they drifted across our shot. a smooth drive, an easy drive right now. vasco road, though, about 24 minutes from marsh creek, down out of contra costa county. back to you. all right. good to know. thanks, mike. well, happening now, new protections are coming for renters in unincorporated sonoma county. the press democrats reporting that supervisors yesterday approved a new just cause ordinance for evictions. it will limit evictions for tenants behind on their rent and
5:57 am
boost relocation benefits. and it will apply to tenants in all multifamily housing units. that new ordinance takes effect in january. vice president kamala harris officially receives the democratic party nomination for president. we proudly cast our 482 votes for the next president, kamala harris. ahead the raucous and fiery night at the dnc as governor newsom and the obamas take center stage, we talk one on one with one east bay u.s. congressman about the exploding excitement in chicago. plus demanding answers. parents learn more about the lead found in the water at some oakland schools. we're live with the next steps planned by school leaders. keep it here. you're watching today in the bay
