in drinking water. new details on its source and the effort now to keep those students safe. america is ready for a new chapter. hope is making a comeback. fired up and ready to go. the obamas light up the democratic national convention with back to back speeches. their criticism of donald trump, and impassioned support for kamala harris. and we're also talking one on one with someone at the center of california delegation, east bay. u.s. congressman mark desaulnier joining us in just moments to share his thoughts about last night and his hope for the harris campaign. this is today in the bay. and good morning to you. on this wednesday, i'm marcus washington and i'm ginger conejero saab. laura garcia is off this morning. i know it's wednesday. we're going to get to our headlines in just a bit, but we're going to start things off with meteorologist kari hall who's going to take a look at
6:02 am
the weather. it's a beautiful start to the day. look behind you. yes i love this view. as we take a look at our clear morning and our bright yellow and orange sunrise over dublin. this morning. don't let that distract you during your drive. you might want to make sure you have those sunglasses for today, and it will be another warm afternoon, especially for the valleys. but then tomorrow we start to feel a change as it becomes windy and cooler and even a chance of showers possible just to the north of the bay area and across the region. happy first day of school for the kids in burlingame. we're going to see temperatures starting out at around 60 degrees, but it will be a breezy afternoon as we stay in the upper 60s for pickup time. we'll get a look at what's ahead. but mike, you have a look at what's happening in san jose. yeah, well, we typically check on this 101 northbound where the first slowing clears up about now, it will build over the next 40 minutes in this portion of san jose. but i did notice we're going to zoom in over here as you see the airports right here. and just as you pass by tramble guadalupe parkway, look, with a
6:03 am
little bit of slowing developing in the northbound direction, i watch for subtle changes because traffic is different. as folks come back online and san jose state starts their session today. so that will mean 280 gets more traffic toward those exits as well. nothing really unusual though. so back to you. thanks mike. well, new developments in oakland. this is where the school leaders are only now bringing parents up to speed on the recent discovery of lead in the drinking water at campuses citywide. the district, already admitting to dropping the ball in sending out notifications today in the bay's bob redell, is live this morning. and last night bob parents got some answers. well, that was the idea. good morning to ginger and marcus. yes, last night the hillcrest pta, which is within the oakland unified school district, they held a meeting with parents. this was behind closed doors to answer their questions and try to alleviate their concerns about a recent revelation that oakland unified identified 186 water fixtures on its campuses with elevated levels of lead. now,
6:04 am
the district knew about this in the spring, but only recently communicated this information to parents. we spoke with mike hutchinson. he's the vice president of the oakland unified school board. he tells us they are working to clarify why it took so long to notify the school community. he also says so far, the lead is not in the piping, which would impact overall water supply. the lead is being released from the older fixtures so only impacting the water coming out of those specific faucets. that's different from it being in the plumbing and being system wide. i just want to say that there is no such thing as a safe lead level in children's blood. that was doctor yvonne maldonado. she's a professor of pediatrics at stanford university. she says symptoms are difficult to trace and depends on the level of exposure to the lead. ultimately, she believes the school district must inform the community if the students are at schools impacted by this. ousd says all schools are expected to
6:05 am
be assessed in the coming months for lead issues and as reports become available, the school community, they say, would be notified within 72 hours. reporting live, bob redell today in the bay. thank you bob. well, the mood is electric, to say the least. at the democratic national convention in chicago. want to give you a live look in the convention center right now. you can see this is outside of there ahead of night three. so last night, some of the party's biggest stars, they're certainly shining. well, former president barack obama, former first lady michelle obama, they thrilled party leaders. our damian damian trujillo was there. and he has more from a memorable night. what a night last night. and now it's on to day three today, former president bill clinton will headline tonight's festivities. also followed by tim walz, the vice presidential nominee. last night, the obamas took over chicago. their hometown. former president barack obama was the big headliner, talking about the importance of the race and why
6:06 am
he supports vice president kamala harris. popular former first lady michelle obama also did not disappoint. she remains very popular in democratic circles, and she showed why. but this day was about kamala harris, and president obama made sure of that. it is one of the oldest tricks in politics, from a guy whose act has, let's face it, gotten pretty stale. we do not need four more years of bluster and bumbling and chaos. we have seen that movie before, and we all know that the sequel is usually worse. in an exclusive interview, harris's campaign manager, julie chavez rodriguez, acknowledged there is renewed excitement in the ticket, but insists there is still a lot of work to do tomorrow. kamala harris officially accepts the nomination, but today is just another big day for democrats in chicago. damian damian trujillo today in the bay. all right,
6:07 am
damian, thank you. and another person who is in chicago at the dnc is east bay, u.s. congressman mark desaulnier. he was actually one of the thousands to be able to witness the speech from the obamas last night. he is joining us live this morning from chicago. i want to thank you so much for joining us, congressman. well last night, certainly, you hear a lot of people talking about the obama speech. they're calling it electrifying. one person, even saying it was lit up. but the thing about it is i want to start with president, former president obama there. talk to us about the energy during his speech and even after last night. well, first off, thanks for asking me to come. it's electric. is the only word i can think of. they were both sensational. i thought the former first lady, michelle obama, her words, the way she articulated decency over and over again, as opposed to the four years of the trump administration. so it's amazing. five weeks ago, i think a lot of
6:08 am
us were, quite concerned about president biden's numbers, and it's just transformed the whole country is transformed about the events of the last four months. and right now, the 50,000 people who are here in chicago are electrified, as i said. and the thing about it is, you heard from both the obamas last night, some people even saying online, i saw they're like, well, i think i like michelle's speech a little bit better. the thing about it is i want to play a little bit from what she said last night, and we'll talk about that. let's take a listen. his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard working, highly educated, successful people who happen to be black. who's going to tell him? who's going to tell him that the job he's currently seeking might just be one of those black jobs? now the he she is talking about former president donald trump, now the first lady, very famously speaking about, you know, when they go low, we go high. from
6:09 am
2016, dnc starts difference from then you know now she is taking the former president head on with some of his comments, even saying that he actually tried to vilify the obamas while they were in office. well, i think you can be strong and still be principled. and she exemplified that last night. her comments about the important role of her mother in her life and our mother's parents, who brought us up to be decent people. being a decent american was something that everyone aspired to, as opposed to the former president, who wants to tear people apart, in my opinion, is crude and rud. so you can be forceful as michelle obama was last night, inspiring and still be decent. be a decent american human being, which is what she called for. i thought she was terrific. people were crying. and i have to say, as great as president obama is as a public speaker,
6:10 am
michelle is the equal to her or was last night or better. absolutely. different political climate there. so you have to go with the climate. i also want to ask you about vice president kamala harris officially going to accept the nomination. nomination on thursday. what are you hoping to hear from her to what is the feeling you're hoping to get from her speech? i hope we just want to we keep doing what she has been doing, which is bring joy and hopefulness and happiness and decency to an american presidential election. and i can't think of a more extreme contrast in my life between the two candidates in multiple ways, but mostly just being a decent human being, speaking to the best of americans as opposed to speaking to the worst of human beings. and lastly, before we go, we've got a few minutes or few seconds left. kind of explain to me what you're seeing now from the party, because we are seeing a big difference from what we saw just a few months ago. i mean, the energy within the party is so electrifying. as
6:11 am
we've been saying, this morning. you know, you can tell it when you see it, but it's pretty. it's just amazing. young people enthused about democracy, learning about democracy and practicing democracy. people who normally would be feel very hopeless and disenfranchized now know that they can make a difference. and we have to also be aware that this is still going to be a close election, maybe not in california, but in the states where the electoral college we have to win. we have to work hard. but i feel really great about what's happening today and in this country, and we're going to elect i really believe this country will elect the first woman president in our history. yeah, you've been hearing that from a lot of people. it's going to be a close race. all right. joining us this morning, us congressman mark desaulnier from the east bay. thank you so much for being with us this morning. my pleasure. thank you ginger. but before we go to that, our coverage of the dnc continues this morning on the today show. savannah guthrie

6:18 am
paying back the loan at exorbitant interest rates, but it's a billions upon billions of dollars loan. banks don't want to hold on to your loans, which, if you have a mortgage every once in a while, it's like, hey, we're taking over the mortgage. so banks sell loans to other, but they can't. nobody will buy them because nobody thinks. nobody thinks twitter is worth what it was. so it's you know, he pays it back, but it's a bad loan. oh yeah. those interest rates, even as high as they are, as exorbitant as they are, are not appealing enough. no. and twitter is not making the money. it needs to because, well, because he told advertisers to do what he told them to do and nobody's advertising on it. yeah, well there goes yeah, wasteful spending, i guess. i don't know. all right scott, thanks a lot. well we've got new this morning. uber is hiring a former tesla executive to over to oversee its shift in electric vehicles. that is according to a memo seen by reuters. now uber

6:20 am
rodrigo is actually a big fan of road, who's been opening act numerous times before on rodrigo's tours. now, roan recently played at outside lands. i know a lot of people were excited about that energizing fans over in san francisco. i mean, she's been really making the rounds there at those festivals, drawing a lot of numbers. well, we talked about that at outside lands. that lollapalooza appearance, one of those records. yeah, that supposedly set, you know, a record or two, a crowd record, i mean, that can you imagine people packed in a space still going h o teetee. oh, i mean, you might hit some people that you're to wear those goggles. all right. well, well you're kind of an expert on her at this point. how long has she been around? oh i'm not very long. it doesn't seem. although she did seem like she was opening for, you know, bigger names. right. but she really blew up there. she's from the midwest. she blew up. and then all of a sudden, it's just, you know, kind of taken off. i think this summer has got to be the most kind of

chicago was rocking last night. or as the kids were saying online, it was lit with the second day of the democratic national convention. scott mcgrew a big day ahead. today is today going to be lit as well? well, you know, it's nancy pelosi. i don't know how lit she will be, but former speaker nancy pelosi speaks tonight. former president clinton. but yes, it will culminate tonight with minnesota governor walz accepting his nomination as the democratic vice presidential candidate. so that's all tonight. last night also quite the lineup with not one but two obamas. if we see a mountain in front of us, we don't expect there to be an escalator waiting to take us to the top. know who's going to tell him? who's going to tell him that? the job he's currently seeking might just be one of those black jobs. the former first lady, referring to a statement donald trump made at a convention of black journalists that immigrants were taking, quote, black jobs.
6:33 am
former president obama spoke thereafter about trump's attempts to kill a bill that would have helped secure the border. he killed a bipartisan immigration deal written in part by one of the most conservative republicans in congress that would have helped secure our southern border because, he thought trying to actually solve the problem would hurt his campaign. he doesn't do not boo vote. do not boo vote. doctor nolan higdon is a professor at uc santa cruz. he watched it to nolan. former president obama said he was the only guy dumb enough to go after michelle obama in a speech. he is known as one of the best orators of his generation, but i think last night we learned he isn't even the best speaker in his own
6:34 am
family. i completely agree the energy from michelle obama was electric. anybody who watched it could could certainly feel it. she had the crowd hanging on every word she said, and it was just a really great speech where she asked voters to take action. it was really reminiscent of jfk's speech about ask not what your country can do for you. and she was just really tore the house down. even obama had to admit it early on in his speech that it was tough to follow his wife. well, the other thing that was very obvious was the, you know, incredible enthusiasm and energy, even in the state. roll call. i know you can't see what's happening on television. we're seeing obama now. the obamas now. but but i'm thinking specifically of little john in the georgia delegation. so that will be running while you give me the answer on this energy that you saw last night. yeah. the energy is incredible. democrats really exude some confidence, you know, especially over the last eight years. i think they've, you know, tried
6:35 am
to find a message about trump. you know, they've tried democracy or tried insults like trump at this convention. they really seem to have a message that that trump is just weird. he's out of step with the future of the country and they're offering an alternative. and that message seems to really resonate in that room in a big way that we just haven't seen at a convention. i think in a handful of elections, this may be, you know, maybe a once or twice in a lifetime situation where there's this candidate that's thrust into the election because a president declined to run the last time this happened, i was six months old with president johnson. but this short timeline seems like just a huge advantage to vice president harris. yeah, i completely agree. i keep wondering if this is going to change politics. you know, the republicans put a lot of time and money into their convention focused on biden. and within just a day, the conversation wasn't about biden anymore. it was about vice president kamala harris. and i wonder if she finds success in this election, if in the future, these parties will try and have
6:36 am
a more truncated timeline on these outcomes, so we could see this be a change election in many ways, i think that would be welcomed by the voters in the news media as well. all right. doctor nolan higdon, always a pleasure to speak with you. vice president harris. governor walz were in milwaukee. you saw them there rallying voters in wisconsin, the same location. in fact, they did their convention. so there you see walls on your far right. he is going to be in chicago tonight to accept his nomination for the vice presidency. and you see the rest of the dnc speakers for day three live coverage on nbc bay area. all right. thanks so much, scott. and don't forget, our damian trujillo is in chicago covering the dnc. you can find him with his extensive coverage throughout the day at night right here on nbc bay area developing right now, people in one south bay city are being warned to be on the lookout for coyotes. today in the bay's bob redell is live this morning. and bob, people with small pets and small children should be
6:37 am
concerned. correct. so it should be noted. ginger, good morning to you that coyotes are generally not a threat to people, but they certainly could cause a problem. if you have a small cat or small dog. the sunnyvale department of public safety is the government agency issuing this warning in the south bay. it says coyotes were spotted in the early morning hours and at dusk in this neighborhood at blue jay drive and locks and smart way, which is not far from the lawrence expressway with the warm temperatures as possible. these coyotes are looking for water which could be in someone's back yard, and that's where they could encounter a cat or small dog and then attack. so again, something to be on the lookout. if you live in that area. just a couple of weeks ago, a coyote was seen on surveillance video carrying a cat from a yard in redwood city. there have also been attacks in san francisco this summer. there are three coyotes that regularly roam my neighborhood in livermore. i live in a relatively rural part. this is video of two of them.
6:38 am
recently, i shot. they've been skittish around me, but i do have two outdoor cats. they've never been attacked by them as far as we know, or at least they're smart enough to avoid them, though about a year or two ago, my daughter rescued a stray cat. this is a different cat from san francisco, and sadly, it disappeared about a month after she brought it home. we think one of the coyotes got to it. so if you do encounter a coyote who isn't skittish, you want to pick up your small animals. if you have a child near you, you want to get between the child and the coyote and if need be, you would have to raise your arms, make loud noises, stand tall, that sort of thing. if you felt like the coyote was being aggressive. reporting live. bob redell today in the bay. thank you bob. some great tips there. 637 as we take a live look over at palisades tahoe ski resort. ginger, don't pull out the ski boots just yet. not that time. but you know what? there is some fresh snow on the horizon there. in fact, as soon as this weekend, the sierra may see some of the first snowfall of this season. any way
6:39 am
to levels as low as 7000ft? as for ski season, well, it is still on track for a late november start, but all of the course can change of at any moment. meteorologist kari hall of course, has a look at what we can expect for the weekend. now, when we're talking about snow, we're not even talking about a light dusting where most people will see. right? right. and it won't look anything like the video we were showing with people stuck on the roads and putting on tire chains and things like that. we're talking about maybe a wintry mix and then and i think above 8000ft in elevation, that's where we could see that chance of some very light dusting of snow coming in this weekend with this very unusual cold storm system that's going to be coming in and could bring in some rain farther to the north of the bay area. there's that slight little blip there where we do see a wintry mix, and once again, i think that will be above 8000ft. and then right behind that we're going to see some intense heat building into the bay area. and so things will change as we go into the weekend as well as

early next week. so i'll be tracking that for you. mike, you were saying that there was a roadside fire in oakland? yeah. northbound is still slow and there's a crew on the shoulder. i don't think that's where it was. i didn't see smoke, but just about high street. the top of the screen, that's where it was reported. there's still a little bit of slowing on the northbound side. southbound fully recovered. and again, didn't see any smoke. no more complications, but we'll watch for that side of the bay, the east bay. we have that continued build for the east shore freeway. a lot of traffic out of richmond, over towards san rafael, and a lot more slowing continues for southbound 242. that section of contra costa county has been a slower drive. if you want to go highway 4 to 680, take that corner. it's at least got better speeds, although it's a little bit longer over here in the city. oracle park sees the giants play a mid day game today. 1245 remember that means more traffic in toward the lunch hour and then getting away from the park. it will congest things as some folks are leaving the city for work. the rest of the day moves well, but there is a slower drive south into fremont. two crashes out of newark and out of

6:49 am
something with it. so she now studies the diablo winds, the same winds that fed the fire that ravaged her community in the hopes of giving people more warning time when the next fire burns their way. you can experience the whole story at nbc bay area dot com slash bay area proud, as well as hundreds of other stories of people being good to each other in the bay area. thanks, robin. all right, so even the fastest man in the world can slow down for just a moment when it comes to a stop at studio one, a us sprinter, noah lyles, appearing on the today show this morning. and yes, he was wearing his medals, but he's also talking about the roller coaster of emotions during the olympics. soon after winning the 100m, he came down with covid, upending his chances of that 200 there. but he says that he actually gave it everything he had. it was very much a huge thing and even going to get the medals, you know, i was we were very i wanted to go get my medal, but we were very worried of not, you know, interfering with the, you know, because these are older people
6:50 am
who are giving me the medals. and, you know, we asked the ioc if they were okay with it and anybody who was presenting and even the other athletes who were getting their medals, i wanted to make sure that they were aware that they felt comfortable with me even showing up. can you believe being in that moment and then coming down with covid while you're there? okay, lyles did win the bronze in the 200. you can watch that full interview coming up at 7:00 right here on nbc. bay area well, still doing that and still being so good that you still walk away with a medal. look, he brings the energy though. i mean, that's one thing about they say, you know, usain bolt told him, look, you bring that energy, the cockiness, even kind of goes with that title, right. so congratulations to him. can't wait to watch that interview. bring that energy on this wednesday. that's what it is right? i guess it's a relay. and we do have some more great weather. so we'll continue what we've already seen these past couple of days, warm in the inland valleys and cool near the coast. let's get a live look outside in dublin with that beautiful sunrise this morning. and it's going to be a warm day. we've been talking about that,
6:51 am
but we do have changes ahead. it gets windy and cooler starting tomorrow and then we're going into the weekend with a chance of showers just to our north. so as we're stepping out today, mostly upper 50s low 60s, and for that first day of school, we are going to see temperatures in the upper 50s. as you're heading out for that, hopefully great first day of school in gilroy and at pick up time it's going to be in the mid 80s. so a significant warm up between the way we start the day into the afternoon, as we see some mid to upper 80s across much of the south bay and the east bay, ranging from 73 in oakland to 89 in antioch. and we'll see some mid 60s for half moon bay, daly city, upper 70s for redwood city, and in san francisco, we're up to 70 downtown and for the north bay low to mid 80s for the most part. so still pretty warm in the inland areas. we will have a system dropping in that's going to bring us some rain just to our north, which may include some of our northern towns like ukiah and clear lake. and then going into late
6:52 am
saturday afternoon, that's all clearing out. we're still left with the clouds and we're going to see some much cooler temperatures. take a look at brentwood going from 91 today to a high of 76 on friday. and just when you think, yay, school is back, temperatures are cooling down. look at what's coming next week. it is going to be very hot. we're hitting 102 degrees there next tuesday, so unfortunately the cooler weather doesn't stay with us long and it only brings in that slight chance of rain late friday into early saturday. mike, you're tracking two crashes in fremont. was they just cleared carey southbound 880. look how quickly those speeds are coming back up. there are two crashes as you head south toward dakota, both cleared without any further incident or injury. a still slower build. and some folks actually heard about those crashes. probably taking the san mateo bridge. so west 92, a little more traffic, right now, the south bay starting to slowing for 101. and 87. but here's the concern for folks
6:53 am
leaving concord and down toward pleasant hill. we're looking at southbound 242 and the bill for 680 southbound. so that section right here has seen a little more traffic and a little more slowing this morning. and now it's feeding over on 24, getting over through lafayette and moraga and heading toward the caldecott. caldecott tunnel is just fine. into the bay bridge is fine as well. here's the san mateo bridge, where we have the slower drive because of the volume. back to you. thanks for the updates, mike. happening now. new protections are coming for renters in unincorporated sonoma county. the press democrat reports that supervisors yesterday approved a new just cause ordinance for evictions. now it will limit evictions for tenants behind on their rent, and it will also boost relocation benefits. it will apply to tenants in all multifamily housing units. the new ordinance takes effect in january, and we're back with our top stories, including new details on the lead contamination plaguing the drinking water over at oakland schools. parents spoke out last

us this morning. it's going to be sunny to start for much of the bay area but temperatures start to heat up for the inland valleys once again. we're headed for the mid 80s. but look at the cooler temperatures ahead for a couple of days and we'll be watching showers very close by and the south bay is lit up with sensors other than green for the northbound commute. we've been seeing more traffic kick in over the last couple of weeks, and you'll see more on this section of 280, because instruction starts at san jose state. so northbound 280 and southbound right around 10th seventh. those will be the popular exits. all right. well, the today show is just ahead. and we are continuing today in the bay on roku and other streaming platforms. we're live with the unique initiative that is now working to help motivate kids across the bay area. to read, watch our 8 a.m. newscast. you can also see it online at nbcbayarea.com. should be fun over there. all right. make sure you join good wednesday morning. and savannah has made her way to chicagth
