to do what he can to introduce himself but also to make the case for kamala harris. >> definitely been an effort to introduce these candidates as individuals. chuck, to that end, it's been over two weeks since vice president harris picked walz as her running mate and a new associated press out today finds 37% of adults don't enough about him to form an opinion. 36% say they have a favorable view. what some are the keys things he needs to accomplish tonight. >> fill in the blanks on his governing style, what he's done, and i've been thinking about this, he's the least nationally known running mate that either party has nominated since sarah palin and before that, you'd have to go back to dan quayle and i think both of those examples are relevant here, in

about this convention showing that the democratic party is sort of flexing its strength, talk about the examples that stand out. >> reporter: the presidents are all here and speaking and developing a through line here of sort of an institutional democratic party and look, they've acted more like a healthy institution when you see how they set joe biden up to get the nomination in 2020 and how they set up harris to end up as the nominee in 2024, the democratic party is bigger than any individual right now, a real change of scripts, the republican party, when we started covering politics they were the party as an institution that everybody was next in line and the democrats were looking for the cultive personalities. these roles have completely reversed. >> our special coverage of the dnc continues this afternoon streaming on nbc news now

demonstrators were treated and released at the hospital and two officers also sustained minor injuries. the deputy mayor spoke at a press conference earlier today, listen to how he criticized last night's demonstration. >> last night it wasn't a protest. what we had we had people who came down to the city to cause harm, to wreak shav vok and they were met with the best trained police department in the country. >> if you ask the protesters, by the way, they didn't want to talk to us last night the group said in their speeches, multile pl protesters told us, dozens of people in their words brutally arrested tonight. outside the israeli consulate.

here's chloe melas. >> reporter: after months of speculation the superstar couple is going their separate ways. jennifer lopez filed for divorce from ben affleck in los angeles on tuesday without an attorney. adding that lopez who had been married to affleck for just two years, is not seeking spousal support. despite the fact that the couple didn't have a prenup agreement. the news comes as the couple had not been spotted together publicly in june. spending their birthday and wedding anniversary apart this summer. even putting their sprawling beverly hills mansion up for sale. according to a source close to lopez, the divorce documents indicate the couple separated on april 26th. the split coming just months after the release of the amazon documentary "the greatest love story never told," which provided a look inside their relationship. >> jennifer lopez and ben affleck, 2001 and 2021 and

lopez telling hoda if february her feelings for affleck were as strong as ever. >> he inspires me and the feelings inspired me to make this music. >> reporter: now their comeback love story won't have the happy ending so many fans were hoping for. we're following breaking news out of italy, authorities searching the site of that deadly superyacht disaster off the coast of sicily say divers have recovered four bodies from the ocean today. 15 people were rescued. today's discovery brings the total number of people killed in the tragedy up to five. claudio reports from sicily. >> reporter: any glimmer of hope in finding any of six people still missing off the superyacht sank off the coast of sicily, a

mile from this shoreline on monday morning. is quickly fading away on wednesday. italian authorities confirmed to nbc news at least four bodies were recovered. 170 feet under water. we have seen four separate green body bags being brought here by the boats from the italian coast guard, they were then loaded on that pier where the coast guard is coordinating the search efforts and then they were inspected and then loaded into ambulances and then sped away escorted by the police. now, of course there are still two remaining missing, but the hope of finding them alive is now fading away. there's an open investigation into how it's possible a luxurious superyacht managed to sink in only a couple minutes, at least according to survivors, whereas other boats nearby didn't suffer the same fate.

that children are going to eat or drink, that is always a concern and should be addressed right away. board members say the contamination is not connected to the entire water supply. it's limited to older fixtures. over the next few months, the schools will get reassessed and administrative notifications about contamination within 72 hours. new developments at the state capitol. some lawmakers in sacramento want governor newsom to put the brakes on plans to transition big rigs to electric. here's nbc bay area's bob redel. you might recall this past monday out east near the sierra nevada, an all electric semi made by tesla caught fire. this was on eastbound 80 near nyack, which is about 30 miles west of truckee. the major freeway had to be shut down for 16 hours because the fire spread to nearby brush. and according to kcra, our sister station in sacramento. firefighters had to wait for a lithium ion batteries to die, burn themselves out, and cool down to 100 degrees. that

took a lot of time. toxic fumes were another issue. now, assemblyman tom lackey and his fellow gop state lawmakers, a handful of them. they're now calling on governor newsom to delay a state mandate for big rigs in the state to be all electric by 2045. because of this fire on 80 and another one involving lithium ion batteries on i-15 back in july. assemblyman lackey says this is not only a traffic issue, but a safety issue as well. since lithium ion battery fires have the potential for, quote, thermal runaway, as explained to us by a firefighter this past monday, where it's basically a loop system electrically inside. and once that is broken in some way, either from a vehicle accident or from the fire, it becomes it becomes overpressurized and overheated, and then it can reignite on its own. assemblyman lackey's letter also asks newsom's administration if it has a plan

attles has died. he used to play for the philadelphia warriors in 1960, which later became the golden state warriors when the team moved here to the san francisco bay area. attles played for 11 seasons, then became player coach and eventually the team promoted him to head coach. the longest tenured head coach in team history. the warriors says al attles died peacefully with his family by his side. he was 87 years old. now a warning for south bay pet owners after a recent coyote sighting in sunnyvale earlier this month, residents reported sightings near blue jay drive and lakeshore way near lawrence expressway. wildlife experts suspect coyotes are looking for water in people's yards because the weather is so dry and warm right now. they say coyotes generally keep their distance from humans, but other times they do and have been known to steal pets. so stay on alert and keep your pets inside. winemakers in the tri-valley prayed for a good harvest this morning. this is video from the

voters in montana will now vote on abortion rights this november. a measure on the ballot would enshrine a previously state supreme court ruling that the constitutional right to privacy protects the right to abortion and it would bar the government from denying abortion access before fetal viability. montana is now the eighth state to let voters weigh in on abortion rights this fall. union workers are calling for stronger safety regulations after a u.p.s. driver crashed the truck. they reportedly experienced heat-related symptoms before passing out behind the wheel. the driver did survive the crash and has been released from the hospital. new jersey police are searching for a woman who climbed over a fence at a zoo to get into a tiger enclosure. there's just one wire fence

between her and a tiger, she had to move her hands away several times to avoid his jaws. police are hoping someone will recognize the person in that video and contact them. we're following breaking news out of the white house, president biden just spoke by phone with israeli prime minister netanyahu, vice president kamala harris was also on that call, it comes amid a new push for a cease-fire in the war in gaza, israel has agreed to the terms of the latest deal proposed by the u.s., hamas hasn't accepted that deal. major new developments this hour on another conflict the war if ukraine, overnight russian authorities said moscow came under the largest attack yet by ukrainian drones since the start of the fighting. erin mclaughlin has the latest. >> reporter: gh russian ministry of defense said it shot down 55 ukrainian drones.

no casualties reported. but one of the largest drone attacks on the russian capital since the war began. no response from the ukrainians so far. meanwhile, in the russian region of kursk ukrainian forces have been digging in for three weeks now solidifying their positions and blowing up bridges, we heard from president zelenskyy trying to use that operation to leverage it to create pressure on the united states and ukraine's western partners to provide longer range weapons to be used on russian territory. saying that if ukraine was allowed to use long-range weapons on russian tore territory they wouldn't need to send in ground forces. so far u.s. officials have been reluctant to allow that over concerns of an escalation of this conflict. a group of black voters from atlanta is in chicago this week for the democratic national convention. >> it's called the black man

my story i don't do therapy just to beat people, i do therapy and i get a checkup from the neck up as my mom said, because i want to be a better human, i want to grow as time grows on. i want to be able to communicate my thoughts and opinions in a way that other people can understand. we're not able to view someone else's point of view and i want to be able to say, hey, i may not agree with it but i can understand how you got to that concept. maybe we can find a way to bridge that. >> you just mentioned, there's a lot going on and sports can be really competitive. i was looking at some of your recent dialogues with other players, especially with the nba, you've been trading some barbs and some people have said, maybe it goes a little far, what do you say to that? >> i don't -- it's not my dialogue. it's a lot of other people's

comfortable with the people who are part of that community, if they can see themselves making friendships and achieving leadership ability, do they provide support for academics? it can be a home within a home. i'd advise kids to really take their time, to see who they feel is a good fit for them. >> i will just say, i was in greek life when i was in college, it was a rewarding experience, sometimes it gets a bad rap because bad things happen, what are the positives? >> it's great for networking. i know adults, this person was in my sorority and it creates that immediate connection. i think the idea within a big school it can be a home within a home and you can meet people who are lifelong friends. develop skill set that you wouldn't have the opportunity to do in a bigger college environment. >> lot of times when we talk about greek life in the press it

comes up in the context of hazing, hazing when a young person is pressured to do things that might make them uncomfortable, talk about how a parent or caregiver can tell a young person is struggling. . >> look into the fraternity or sorority reputation and look out for signs. it's never okay to be humiliated. it's never okay to feel like your mental health or physical well-being is at risk. i think that's a great start and to encourage them to trust their instincts. because they'll have to rely on their instincts the rest of their lives. >> lot of colleges have student affairs students can go.

tomorrow, from thursday to thursday, a san francisco tunnel is going to close for muni light rail work. crews perform maintenance work on the twin peaks tunnel that services the k, l, m and s lines. the work will not affect the n, j and t lines because those lines run through the sunset tunnel. workers will also close the west portal and forest hill muni stations. a bus bridge will link light rail riders between those stations and the castro or church street stations. also in san francisco, look out for robots roaming the streets today through saturday. these robots will roam market street in the financial district. they're celebrating the opening of amazon's new web services generative ai loft. the company says the loft is focused on moving artificial intelligence into the future. we got to talk to an aws developer about that. the loft is really welcoming for all developers and entrepreneurs, and startups to come in and experiment with the latest generative ai technologies from aws and like dream up and build the cool new
