5:03 am
but we will have cooler temperatures coming in thursday and friday, leading into a very nice labor day weekend. here's a look at our highs for today. the hottest day of the week, reaching 94 degrees in napa, as well as martinez, about the same 90 in san jose and upper 90s in the south county. we'll look ahead to the rest of the week and our weekend forecast coming up in a few minutes. all right, kerry, thank you. well, parents demanding answers. this is after what appears to be a targeted beating at one east bay high school. so far, the district is not confirming anything or commenting to nbc bay area. but witnesses say that five masked attackers beat up a freshman ats locker room after school last friday. the district telling parents in an email some of the attackers have now been identified. we actually spoke with one parent who says that this and other recent incidents are leaving them, fearing for their children's safety. these issues need to be addressed and whoever is assaulter needs to be punished. now, witnesses say
5:04 am
that a football coach and players were in the locker room and helped rescue that student before he was badly injured. they also say that the attackers jumped into a waiting car and then sped off before they could actually be questioned. dublin police are now investigating. new this morning, a federal judge in texas has blocked a new white house policy giving the spouses of u.s. citizens legal status without having to leave the country. the program is called keeping families together. and about half a million people are eligible. it went into effect last week. it allows the undocumented spouses of american citizens to stay in the country while they apply for green cards and work to gain citizenship themselves. the attorney generals for texas and 15 other states sued last week to block it, claiming the program directly violates the laws created by congress. the judge did rule. people may still apply, but their applications will not be processed until the stay is lifted. 504 turning now

to decision 2024. both presidential campaigns looking to gain some support from undecided voters. the republican vice presidential nominee, jd vance, will be in michigan today as a surrogates for kamala harris stump across wisconsin. today in the bay is alice barr joining us live from washington. and alice, there's a little more uncertainty surrounding aspects of the highly anticipated presidential debate. marcus and laura, we have already seen throughout this campaign how important those face to face showdowns are. so there's no surprise that there is a lot of focus on questions swirling over the debate, set to take place two weeks from today, is actually going to go ahead as a ton of weed today on the trail, former president trump's running mate, senator jd vance, set to speak on the economy and inflation in michigan, while vice president harris's husband campaigns in new york and senator elizabeth warren stumps for her in battleground wisconsin. but there's a roadblock in the flat out race

for the white house. all of a sudden, they want to make a change in the rules because she can't answer questions in the back and forth. over a september 10th debate between the two nominees, former president trump both objecting to and seeming to agree with a request from the harris campaign to leave microphones unmuted while the other candidate is speaking, a reversal from the last trump-biden debate doesn't matter to me. i'd rather have it probably on, but the agreement was that it would be the same as it was last time. we want that opportunity for the american people to see donald trump for who he is not censored, not muted, but the unfettered guy that he is going to be if he becomes president again, the former president saying he's still thinking about whether he'll even take part in the debate, accusing the host network abc news, of treating republicans unfairly. that, as he addressed a national guard conference in michigan, tying vice president harris to the chaotic u.s. withdrawal from afghanistan three years ago, 13

the end of an era for the hotel that opened in 1957. this is also where the new baseball stadium will be located, with construction on track to start next april. for now, the a's plan to play the next three seasons in sacramento before making the move. all of this is underway despite public financing for the ballpark not yet being finalized. now to a live look at the state capitol. this is where today, state school superintendent tony thurman is hosting a hearing on smartphones, social media and youth wellness. now, thurman wants to consider new ways to keep children safe and healthy in the digital world, and the hearing will also build on legislation enacted back in 2020. this was allowing districts to restrict student cell phone usage while at school. now, some of those speakers are expected to share their own personal insight. it all gets underway at 830 this morning. a heat wave complicating back to school plans, the midwest and ohio valley could see some of the
5:09 am
hottest weather they've had all year. the heat alerts stretch across nearly two dozen states. officials say 63 philadelphia schools without adequate air conditioning will dismiss early today, and tomorrow. same goes for schools in michigan. officials there say while nearly all buildings have air conditioning, rising temperatures could be a strain on the schools cooling systems. it's a struggle with how warm it is, especially our 2 or 3 story buildings, to be able to keep up when it's this hot and this humid, it's just difficult for those systems to keep our kids cool enough to be able to focus on their learning, let alone if they have school sports as well. they're having a big problem with that. yeah. and there's a lot of research on this recently, too, with climate central, it's a group of meteorologists and researchers who are seeing that we are seeing a back to school cooling demand that is really rising due to climate change and the extreme heat that we've seen across the country. and really,
5:10 am
the northern states are getting hit the hardest. seeing the very extreme temperatures, the high heat during an extended summertime and we're seeing that extending into the school year as well. that also includes the bay area, where in san jose we are now 43% seeing a higher demand for cooling and a lot of our schools don't have air conditioning. so that's something that needs to be put into the budget for the future. if we continue to see these trends that we are seeing with climate change and in a warmer climate. now let's get a look at our back to school forecast. as kids are now getting into week two and week three of school, now, a drop off time in brentwood, it will be nice and comfortable in the upper 60s, but look at your pickup time, temperature 97 degrees. it is going to be very hot today. and yes, air conditioners on full blast. we are going to see this as our hottest day of the week and even warmer in san francisco with some upper 70s for today.
5:11 am
with low to mid 90s in much of the north bay. we'll be tracking this. we'll talk about a cooler end of the week hopefully. mike, you're seeing numbers going down but i know holiday is coming up. yeah exactly. so we're watching for perhaps a little price climb toward the weekend. but right now holding pretty steady. we'll start in santa clara. their best is 385 at platinum gas on washington street in the north bay. it's vallejo with solano county's low. that's 397 at the safeway on lincoln road west. and in the east bay, we have oakland, alameda county's best is 399 at telagas on telegraph. clever telegraph avenue, a clever or not the prices will be there clearly stated on gasbuddy.com. hopefully you'll add some as well. let's get out to the roadways where we are looking at a pretty smooth drive overall. the lower deck of the bay bridge cleared from the earlier car fire. in fact, chp cruiser fire. we are looking at northbound 680. i believe they're just about clearing. the last stages seem to be over at burnell for the northbound 680 overnight work there. there may be crews slowing you down a bit, but the commute directions here
5:12 am
are fine. 580 out of the altamont pass miles slowing typical and vasco road shows a little bit longer. a couple of minutes longer than we often see. so i'm going to track that closely. back to you. good to know. thanks, mike. all right. he's tracking the roads. what about the seas for whale watchers these days? it is a feast for the eyes. more whales are being spotted along the bay area coastline. still ahead on today in the bay. the unique conditions experts believe are drawing them closer to shore. and in business news, more major corporations getting rid of their d e i programs. we'll take a closer look. plus because maybe you're gonna be the one that saves me. and 15 years after the split that rocked rock n roll. an oasis in the desert. yeah. for oasis fans, the details that just came public, that reunion tour coming up. we're going to tell you all about it and much more. you're

5:16 am
finally get some relief and time for our holiday, so we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. right here, though, it's looking like a tuesday where folks sometimes leave work a little bit earlier. saw a good amount of traffic here in san jose. no slowing on the sensors for this portion of 101, but it's typically where we see the first signs of that anyway. we'll track the south bay closely and i'll give you a look at. contra costa county coming up. well good morning. very happy tuesday to you. the dow hit new records on monday in anticipation of all those rate cuts. markets having their best string of wins all year. just wait until tomorrow nvidia reports profits tomorrow. expectations are high nvidia has become a household name. and in silicon valley it's made a lot of households very happy. lows meantime dropping much of its d e i program, according to the washington post dies diversity, equity and inclusion lows, for instance, will no longer let its employees have employee resource groups like latina women or

citizens in a privately funded mission, because the dragon capsule doesn't have an airlock. that means just opening the nose like a front door. so the two other astronauts on board definitely want to make sure their spacesuits are operating properly. as well. the other interesting part of the mission is the orbit. over the course of five days, polaris dawn will reach an apogee. that is the highest part of the orbit of more than 870 miles above earth. that's farther away than any spacecraft has been since apollo. and facebook's mark zuckerberg says he regrets bending to government pressure to take down certain posts users made about covid during the pandemic. he made those comments in a letter to a house committee. zuckerberg says he'll push back if it happens again. i believe the government pressure was wrong, he said. i regret we were not more outspoken about i. i feel strongly we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any administration in either direction. a reminder it would

after 15 years. brothers noel and liam gallagher have settled their differences and they are returning to the stage together, starting with shows in london and manchester next summer. the band posted a message and short video on their social media accounts, confirming that news and other tour dates. you might recall the siblings they split back in 2009, pursuing solo endeavors. the comeback rumors come just days before the 30th anniversary of oasis debut studio album. and i don't know her, but i'm sure mama gallagher is very happy. thanksgiving is going to be peaceful again, right? we'll see. well, they're from london, so i don't know if they're still. oh that's true. nevertheless they still celebrate christmas. there you go. all right. we have some nice weather as you're heading out this morning. feels nice and cool. it is also all clear for the view of the planets and the moon this morning. i don't know if you have a chance to see that, but it also looks a little
5:21 am
hazy as we're going out and going throughout the day. a bit more ozone as well as some of those pollutants out there, and we've had quite a few fires burning that still is bringing smoke into the bay area. as we take a look at our air quality, it will be moderate for us for today. might want to limit time outside if you are sensitive to unhealthy air quality, but we are going to see in some parts of the bay area those temperatures ramping back up. we're in the upper 90s today in gilroy and 89 in milpitas, and in for much of the east bay. we're in the upper 90s from antioch to walnut creek, pleasanton at 96 degrees, while oakland will be in the low 80s, a high of 73, and half moon bay, still nice and comfortable there, while redwood city will be in the upper 80s san francisco today, hitting the upper 70s downtown and for the north bay, our coastal area. still nice and mild. bodega bay at 73, but 93, in santa rosa and 99 in ukiah. so we are dealing
5:22 am
with some pretty intense heat all across the region, but we are in for some cooling just in time for our labor day weekend. this area of low pressure develops and moves closer. it reinforces our fog as well as the morning clouds as well as the sea breeze. so that's going to bring down those temperatures over the next several days. but we will still have at least three days of highs in the 90s, upper 80s on friday and then mid 80s for saturday and sunday may be the coolest day with a high of 82. and in san francisco we're going to see temperatures going from mid seconds to upper 60s for the weekend. mike even though it's tuesday, the commute seems pretty calm. it's pretty calm. but we did see what seems to be a little higher volume in some of our camera shots. so there you go. green is the dominant color, including northbound 680 coming out of sunol and in toward pleasanton. we had overnight closure there, road work going on now we don't see much going on here. there's your typical slowing for highway 37, but we'll zoom in over here. the sensors are just changing a

little more. there you go. concord bay point, pittsburg, and then the live camera we have on 680 right down about here, getting into walnut creek, the volume really starting to build up over the last few minutes. so we're just tracking that to see if there's any early slowing in contra costa county. back to you. thanks, mike. an increase in whale sightings head on today in the bay. the driving factor behind it all but first, it's time to help us clear the shelters. i want to introduce you to many four year old domestic shorthair mix. four month old. i'm sorry. and we're actually told that she is a little shy. but loves playing with the toys. she is available for adoption over at the animal community center in milpitas, and we have a full list of those pets up for adoption right now. you see that qr code there on your screen? point your phone to it. once that link pops up, click on that. it's going to take you to our website so you can learn more about adoptions as well as how you can donate to some of those shelters here in the bay area. now, if you don't have your phone handy, don't worry, j

whales. and this year, get this that number so far is up more than 400. he says that there is a driving factor behind it all. there's more, more food in shor, right? the whales, these things, these animals can eat thousands of pounds a day. they can eat 10,000 pounds in a day. and so they're going to where the food is. and yes, there's more people out looking because of this news. right. but what's really special is that the whales are coming in closer to shore, just because in particular anchovies showing up in big numbers. yeah, that's why i moved here about just as much. right? jessamyn is also the co-founder of happy. well, it's a website used by researchers and citizen scientists to keep track of those whales around the world. i learned something today that kathy fafsa. all right. wow. a lot of yellow this morning. 527 right now. coming up next, the top stories we're following today, including tracking a warm up in your forecast. maybe that's why we're golden over here. meteorologist kari hall timing out. the high

times a year, and. yeah, august, september, october. really? at any point, you may have to get the air conditioning out. we're seeing natural air conditioning this morning at the golden gate bridge with the fog that starts out. it's misting and drizzling and right now we at least have a cool morning. you can open up the windows, let the house cool down, close the windows by about 8 to 9:00, because after that point we see those temperatures heating up. take a look at pleasant hill and what we're expecting for today. going from 66 degrees at 8:00 to 71 at 9:00. and then the rest of the day, those temperatures continue to heat up. we're headed for the 90s here. the hottest temperature will be 99 degrees in ukiah. 98 in fairfield and in gilroy. 98 degrees. most of us in the low 90s from the south bay to the peninsula and then san francisco in the upper 70s. we'll take a look ahead to some cooler weather, but, mike, you're starting with a look at the bay bridge. yeah, because some folks might have heard about a car fire on the lower deck. well, whether you heard
5:33 am
about it or not, it's all clear. it cleared just before 5:00 this morning. a chp cruiser caught fire. no one injured and now no problems. not even any flares. they all burnt out. that's great news. that was getting out of san francisco. getting into san francisco. a smooth, easy drive as well. saw the bump up in volume for a couple of minutes here. so we're watching the metering lights should be turned on a regular time. this is a tuesday. we are seeing a good amount of traffic out there. so highway 37 showed that slowing early on early in the 5:00 hour. highway 4 now showing a generous portion that's slower coming out of bay point, pittsburg, and in toward pleasant hill. six 8242. moving smoothly, though, through walnut creek and continuing down toward san ramon, the dublin interchange. 580. a little slowing. stanford, back to you. thanks mike. well, new overnight. at least one person is in critical condition. this is after a crash near san francisco city hall. now, police are saying that a motorcyclist and a bicyclist crashed at market and south venice streets just after midnight. an officer told our photographer there at the scene, multiple people were taken to the hospital as a
5:34 am
result. at last check, south venice remains closed due to this investigation. well, developing now. investigators still trying to piece together why a wrong-way driver triggered a head-on crash which killed a san jose woman and her young passenger. the tragedy led to hours long closure of northbound highway 85. chilling dash cam video captured the images of the white truck. the chp says slammed into a tesla shortly before 4 p.m. yesterday south of santa teresa boulevard. a 47 year old woman and her 14 year old passenger died in that tesla. authorities are not saying if the two were related. the pickup truck driver suffered major injuries. just a few cars behind the crash. some people in those cars, explained the chaos. i've seen accidents all my life in the bay area, this seemed to be different. it had a really not an eerie feeling. it does make me think how how life is so
5:35 am
fleeting and anything can happen at a blink of an eye. you just never know. chp says the pickup driver was a 39 year old florida man with a prior history of dui, cited earlier this year for driving without a license. they also say he was driving in the wrong direction for several miles prior to the crash. well, the search is on for a gunman in hayward. this is after a deadly shooting happened around 330 yesterday afternoon on santa clara street, just off of 880. our sky ranger was overhead. as you can see, as investigators searched for evidence. police tell us that a 36 year old man was killed. so far, no arrests have been made. happening today, san francisco teachers make an urgent call to the district. now struggling with possible school closures. they say more staffing is critical and some teachers are overwhelmed. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is in our newsroom this morning and ginger, this all comes to a recent shakeup. there with leadership in san francisco.
5:36 am
that is correct. good morning, laura and marcus. school board president lainie motamedi has announced she is stepping down, citing personal health issues. now the newest member of the board of education, phil kim, was sworn in last friday. and this leadership change comes as parents and teachers will be out rallying this evening calling for the hiring of more teachers, counselors and other staff for the district. the united educators of san francisco say they strongly disagree with the delay of hires from the california department of education, and that starting the school year with over 100 classroom vacancies is unacceptable. now, i sat down with the superintendent of sfusd, doctor matt wayne, right before the school year kicked off. he says the district, although not where it wants to be, is trying to make progress. we are starting the year in a better place than we were last year with more positions filled. we think, you know, the salary increase that we gave to our educators really helped. and
5:37 am
then we've also been improving how we're staffing our schools and going through that process. and so we're we're pleased to be in a better place. and the teachers union and their supporters will make their demands loud and clear at tonight's school board meeting. it is calling for an emergency protest at 530. right before that meeting. all these transitions come as the district continues to face a huge announcement. the superintendent is expected to share his recommendations for school closures on september 18th, something the board will have to vote on likely in december. back to you guys. thank you. ginger well, a turf war is happening in santa clara county in a matter of hours. the board of supervisors, they will consider a ban on artificial turf impacting countless fields and parks. today in the bay's. bob redell joins us live from santa clara this morning. bob, public health department is weighing in on this. correct. good morning to you, laura and marcus, because there are health
5:38 am
concerns over the artificial turf fields like the one behind me here at santa clara county's youth soccer park, which is right next to levi's stadium. concerns that these fields could be harmful to people. so later today, we're talking about this afternoon, the santa clara county board of supervisors. they're going to vote on a new ordinance that would ban the installation of artificial turf on county owned properties and would require that existing turf be ripped out, if not properly maintained. the santa clara county medical association supports the ban because it says chemicals in the fake grass have been linked to cancer. another group called mothers out front silicon valley, says artificial turf poses a particular health risk to children who play sports on these fields. it causes more injuries, but what concerns me the most is the toxic chemical soup of chemicals that's in it. this ban would hurt the ability to produce more fields in the bay area, so fields like this, we pack in 7 to 8 teams a night
5:39 am
every hour. we're practicing on these fields. opponents of the ban, who won? you just heard from right there. say there aren't enough real grass fields in the county. and among the ones that do exist, many are lumpy and bumpy and hard to maintain. they also point out artificial turf has evolved with safer surfaces and eco friendly materials. the board of supervisors did ask the santa clara county public health department to weigh in. as you mentioned, the public health department acknowledges some health risks from artificial turf, but says conclusions are mixed and do not provide a strong argument for or against artificial turf. reporting live here in santa clara. bob redell today in the bay. interesting to look at. thanks, bob. our coverage continues this morning with meteorologist kari hall taking a closer look at why these turf bans started in the first place. yeah, we're going to link this to our climate in crisis because there is a lot to talk about now with them banning artificial turf in california.
5:40 am
it's all because of a new bill that governor newsom signed last week that gives cities the right to prohibit fake turf. and san mateo is one of the first to do so. this all comes from that major drought that we had a few years ago, and artificial turf was thought to be a water saving alternative to grass, but recent research has shown that fake grass is not greener on the other side. synthetic turf releases harmful chemicals and microplastics that are linked to developmental delays in children and even cancer. so here's some healthy alternatives that we need to use immediately in our yard or our lawns. visiting your local nursery. your plant nursery can give you some insight on some low maintenance, drought tolerant native plants to put in your lawn. look into bermuda grass or buffalo grass and yes, some of the ground cover cover you'll learn about at the nursery. have funny names like turkey tangle babies, tears and frog fruit. but native

the third anniversary of the withdrawal from afghanistan, which is largely considered to be both a necessary step after more than 20 years of war. in fact, it was america's longest war ever, but also considered to be a disaster as well. 13 marines killed by a terrorist at abbey gate a chaotic withdrawal complete chaos during that withdrawal in just a matter of days. it is something we used that we said was a catastrophe. politically, trump is trying to pin some of the blame on his opponent, vice president harris. historians will say there's plenty of blame to go around. it was trump's administration that negotiated the withdrawal from the taliban at the doha records, setting the timeline, but ultimately, joe biden was commander in chief during withdrawal, and his harry truman said the buck stops there. trump for the second day, casting doubt on whether he'll show up for the september 10th presidential debate. the trump and harris camps had agreed on

that date. it will be on abc, they said. but now trump is not so sure. i think abc is really should be shut out. i'd much rather do it on nbc. i'd much rather do it on cbs. frankly, i think cbs is very unfair, but the best of the group, and certainly i do it on fox. i'd even do it on cnn. i thought cnn treated us very fairly the last time a bipartisan congressional committee investigating what went wrong during that trump rally in pennsylvania last july, when a gunman was able to access a close by building, take a shot at the former president here, they're touring the grounds of the butler farm show grounds. the task force, co-chaired by pennsylvania congressman mike kelly. he's from butler, and he was at the rally when the shooting took place. the most important thing is it recognizes we are us representatives, not democrats, not republicans, but both searching for the answers and reassuring the american people that we can work together and we can get the right answers. so this doesn't happen

much as they possibly can. they don't want to set the market. they don't want to do it. they don't think it's the time. the niners are also dealing with another key holdout, future hall of famer, hall of fame lineman, i should say trent williams. he is seeking more guaranteed money. the niners kick off the season at home against the jets. well, the sounds of black culture returning to the north bay this friday, the blue note jazz festival's black radio experience returns. so the labor day weekend event is going to bring together some of the biggest names in music. this is amid the backdrop of food, wine. over in napa. the event is going to be held over at the heritage hotel and resort. i spoke with robert glasper. if you don't know him, he is a five time grammy award winning musician and he's also going to be the artist in residence. and this is for the festival. and he says that, look, music fans can expect a spontaneous weekend of musical performances. these festivals. that's what happens in the moment. you know, last year i had george clinton, de la soul, i had george clinton, de la soul, anderson. paak and

sunrise this morning as we take a live look over dublin. bright orange as we look toward the altamont pass, we can see all the cars heading out here on 580, and we're watching air quality. so if you can once again call a friend, maybe you can carpool. we're trying to reduce the amount of carbon emissions we're putting out there, as we are weather set uph pressure, just pushing everything back down. so we'll have a chance to mix out and we're going to see some moderate air quality today across the bay area. as far as our temperatures, we're headed for 92 in novato and 83 in oakland, 93 in dublin and 98 degrees in concord. today, san jose will be hitting 90 degrees with mid to upper 90s the farther south you go in the south county. now tomorrow we're looking at more of the same. it's still going to be pretty hot, only dropping a degree or two in some areas. and then on thursday we drop a few more degrees so you can see the trend here. there still will be some 90s, but there will be low 90s for the most part, and then

mid to upper 80s for much of the north bay on thursday. so looking ahead, our weather setup is producing high pressure and also hotter temperatures. but just in time for our holiday weekend, we are going to see this low developing that's going to reinforce the sea breeze and create more coastal fog and help cool our temperatures down across the bay area. let's take a look at livermore and the changes we will see. we're going from highs in the upper 90s today to low 90s on thursday, and then low 80s on sunday. the middle of next week we're going to be heating up again. so we are going to have some more heat ahead. only a brief break from that going into the next several days. but we are going to have to deal with the 90s for at least until thursday. and then the weekend is looking nice and mild, while san francisco will see temperatures in the mid 70s. today we'll bring it back to the upper 60s for the weekend. mike, you're seeing those lanes filling in at the bay bridge. no surprise, but it is tuesday. good volume of traffic came in.
5:56 am
here we go. a gradual build now, but again off the 880 overcrossing a little additional slowing. so there's a different pattern shaking out as far as that volume goes. but again tuesday does tend to see more traffic. anyway, there's a crash that popped up on the grid in richmond. turns out it is eastbound getting away from the bay bridge and heading up toward the carquinez bridge. there will be a little slowing past the scene. i don't have details about any injuries. none reported though. as you're traveling westbound, the mild slowing as you approach golden gate fields and there was a fender bender reported as you approach the metering lights as well, that may be the reason why we have that periodic slowing over on the right approach. everything else looks pretty standard. the south bay, a little build. same thing for hayward. back to you. all right. thanks mike. well, happening now, a contractor accused of abandoning customers in the bay area had its license suspended by the state. anchor tiny homes ceo has previously stated that he was exploring bankruptcy. families around the bay area told our response team that the company took money up front, but later abandoned projects. customers claim that millions of
