the nation's capital, like much of the east coast, expected to break heat records. at a time when kids are heading back to school and the leaves will soon be falling, an unexpected turn in the temperature is making life difficult for millions of americans. >> oh, my gosh. this is so hot. >> reporter: a massive dome of heat is making its way across the country. temperatures in cities like chicago, st. louis and cincinnati were 10 to 15 degrees higher than normal, putting air-conditioner units to a late season test. >> once the temperatures hit 80, 85, we start to get a high call volume of air-conditioners breaking down. >> reporter: today it's the east coast's turn to bake. >> we struggle with not only getting to school, but they have to come right back. >> reporter: schools in philadelphia are planning for an early dismis kids sitting in hot classrooms, many without air-conditioning. >> why start before labor day every year if maybe the temperatures are rising each year? >> reporter: in new york city, the u.s. open is preparing to

the buildup to the labor day weekend, the threat of mosquito-borne illnesses. health officials have been sounding the alarm this week. now a case in new hampshire has turned deadly. joe fryer has the details on this one. >> good morning, guys. yeah, as we try to soak up the end of summer even with the wild weather, americans are also on the lookout for mosquitos. concerns about the diseases they carry are growing. this morning in new england, there is news of one case turning deadly. this morning communities are on alert during peak mosquito season with the concerns the insects could be carrying deadly diseases. >> they can get out of control and do a lot of damage. >> reporter: this year mosquitos have been linked to two dangerous illnesses, west nile virus or eastern equine encephalitis. in new hampshire a man bitten by a mosquito later died of eee. it is new hampshire's first

human case in a decade. cases have popped up in wisconsin, vermont, new jersey and massachusetts, where spraying began tuesday night. >> our kids are -- you know, they get bit a lot, so i wouldn't want them to get anything like that. i'm glad that they're trying to mitigate that. >> reporter: experts say the eee virus is very rare but is troublesome. >> it's an infection no one wants to get and we can avoid it by not getting bitten by mosquitos. >> reporter: west nile has been found in 33 states as the west nile virus has been rising this summer. but experts say americans can still enjoy the holiday weekend with precautions. >> mosquitos are predominantly out very early in the morning or dusk, in the evening, so that's the time where you want to be more cautious. >> experts say there is more you can do including wearing long

shirts or pants, remove standing water around your property and of course applying that insect repellent. >> thanks, joe. a significant legal maneuver that could impact the race for the white house. the social counsel overseeing the 2020 election interference case against donald trump now filing a new version of the indictment, accusing the former president of plotting to overturn the results. the move coming after the recent supreme court ruling on presidential immunity that jeopardized the initial case. we have two reports starting with garrett haake covering the trump campaign. >> good morning. this new indictment contains all the charges on donald trump original ones, but with revised support in them. charges he already pled not guilty. this sharpens the legal focus on mr. trump's handling of the last election results as this next

election looms just a few short months away now. special counsel jack smith filing a superseding indictment against the former president over his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. while the original charges remained, smith narrowed and revised his allegations against the former president, removing references to anything that might be considered official acts during his time in office. online mr. trump calling it the persecution of a political opponent. he has already pled not guilty to all of the charges. the new indictment comes on the heels of last month's bombshell ruling that found presidents enjoying broad immunity from official acts. >> i'm immune from all the stuff they charged me with. >> i was concerned about a system that appeared to provide immunity for one individual under one set of circumstances. >> reporter: the new indictment accuses mr. trump of using his campaign to spread lies that he knew were false to create an

intense national atmosphere of mistrust and anger. that includes a now infamous call mr. trump made to georgia secretary of state after losing the state to joe biden. >> i just want to find 11,780 votes. >> reporter: on certifying the election results, the special counsel refers to former vice president presence, writing mr. trump had no official responsibilities but did have a personal interest, alleging he attempted to use a crowd on january 6th to pressure the vice president to alter the election results. >> we fight like hell. if you don't fight like hell, you are not going to have a country. >> reporter: nbc news released video shot by nancy pelosi's daughter in the hours after the attack that hbo recently turned

over to congress. the former speaker blasting mr. trump. >> we take an oath to protect our country from all enemies foreign and domestic. there's domestic enemies in the white house. >> reporter: that video also contains the speaker wondering aloud why the national guard was not at the capitol before the attack, which she also says she takes responsibility for not being prepared with the guard and more. but the d.c. national guard is controlled by the federal government meaning then former president trump himself would have had to order them out. >> let's talk about this new indictment. to do that, laura jarrett, is joining us this morning. to jarett's point, two months ago, we had the decision on immunity. why now? >> because of the way that the justices wrote the decision. and you were there that way. they said what's on limits, what's off limits, what's immune, what's not immune. they forced their hand to try to make it comply with the supreme

court's decision. the timing was important here, guys. >> that's what i was going to ask you. can you talk about that? >> yes. the justice department generally tries not to make any moves against a candidate within 60 days before the presidential election because they don't want to affect the election. so they were right within that window right now. so if they were going to do it, they had to do it right now. the issue is there is going to be some work for the trial court judge to do because they kept in some of the stuff that the supreme court said might be immune. so now the trial court will have to parse that out, and it will take some time. >> to be clear again, the thinking if trump wins the election, it goes away. >> but if he's not re-elected, guys, they want to have something. so they need to have this revised indictment in case the case does move forward. >> and this judge now will have to decide what was official and what was unofficial? >> and we're talking weeks. we're talking months and months really, to just be clear, because it was a new grand jury. so they are going to get to find out -- the defense will get to

vehicles, troops and strikes in what israel calls a large-scale counterterrorism operation. authorities saying at least nine people were killed. the fallout from the war in gaza expanded in multiple areas including in the west bank where tensions have been rising. posting, we must address this in the same manner as we deal with in gaza, including the evacuation of palestinian residents. this is a full-fledged war, and we must win it. on another front of that war, after a rescue in gaza, today is the first full day of freedom for the hostage held captive in the hamas tunnel for 326 days. his family elated, seen here running to his side. he's going home this afternoon and we'll have a small party for him there, his cousin said. he lost about 55 pounds in captivity because he wasn't eating proper food. he ate dried fruits and vegetables and a little bread.

idf special forces rescued him tuesday morning from the vast tunnels in gaza. the 52-year-old father of 11 children was a security guard in southern israel when he was captured in hamas' october 7 terror attacks. 18 were killed on october 7th. he is one of six who were kidnapped. but rescue missions like this remain rare. he is only the eighth hostage that has been recovered alive. dozens more remain waiting for a similar liberation. and, sheinelle, israeli officials are blaming iran for the unrest in the west bank, accusing the country of smuggling weapons to militants there. >> thank you. meanwhile this morning, millions of at&t customers were affected by a software glitch yesterday that caused a major phone outage and even impacted some 911 services. many affected say their phones

the tsa. first, sam brock joins us from laguardia airport. hey, sam. >> reporter: hi, sheinelle, craig. we have been talking all year about the fact that air travel has really elevated to new heights. so it is not exactly a surprise that the labor day rush is expected to smash records, projecting an 8.5% increase from a year ago. friday is expected to be the highest volume day. and, guys, the roads are going to be packed with people as gas prices are down 50 cents a gallon from where they were a year ago. this labor day weekend, americans are packing up and heading out in mass. >> i think it is just a lot of people traveling. >> the holiday stretch, officially tracked from thursday to next wednesday will break records according to the tsa and travel site, hopper. >> right now almost 23 million seats are expected to depart from u.s. airports over the long

weekend. >> reporter: a key part of that equation, the price of airfare plummeted, with hopper estimating the average flight is $211. >> it's down 5% from last year and 17% compared to pre-pandemic levels. >> it's not just air travel raising the bar. gas prices averaging $3.35 nationwide are also revving up drivers. >> sunday and monday are going to be the roughest days, especially monday. the interstates and the major metro areas like d.c., new york, los angeles, they're going to be packed in those afternoon hours on labor day itself. >> reporter: when it comes to airports, the busiest, atlanta, chicago, dallas and denver with a three-day weekend, a last chance for families to soak up the summer sun. domestic destinations are outpacing international ones. >> seattle is the top destination. it was number one last year as well. but we have seen a 30% increase in seattle this year. why? it is those alaska cruises.

>> reporter: speaking of seattle, sea-tac is still recovering from an apparent cyberattack over the weekend that disrupted their website and delayed around 7,000 bags. the record breaking summer travel season hit speed bumps in july when 47% of flights were delayed, 37% canceled. now august is set to close with 24% of flights disrupted, and that's thanks in large part to tropical storm debby. if your flight is canceled or delays for any reason, you can rebook on the next available flight on any airline. so flying on saturday and returning tuesday or wednesday would actually be a good approach to keep you away from some of the worst crunch. as far as that situation in seattle is concerned, sea-tac officials say they made progress when it comes to restoerg the damaged baggage system, but

they're encouraging travelers to pack carry-ones if they can. >> sam, thank you. let's bring someone on the front lines of this historic travel season. holly is with us there. an always busy week at the national airport. holly, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. >> so, again, busiest in history. we have been talking about it for a few months now. you are expected to smash another record this labor day weekend. what is the tsa doing to prepare? >> reporter: well, you are right. air travel is back. and the volume is the highest our agency has seen in our nearly 23-year history. we are staffed up and ready to support. as reported, we are anticipating about 17 million passengers we will screen through the system, starting tomorrow, thursday, through next wednesday, september 4th. we are staffed up and ready to go. >> sometimes you guys are able to figure out which airports will be busier than others ahead of a travel rush.

do we know which particular airports this time around folks are going to be flocking to in mass? >> reporter: well, yes. and we work with our airline partners and airport partners, too, on travel projections. and we are ready. for tsa, you can expect, too, our wait times will be ten minutes or less for precheck passengers and 30 minutes or less for standard lane. and i also would like to mention that we also have our national deployment officers that we deploy when we might see some staffing needs in particular locations. >> as you know, since the pandemic, a lot of folks haven't been just traveling more, but a lot of these folks have been unruly on flights, as they're boarding flights as well. in fact, the faa last week reported 43 incidents that were going to be referred to the fbi for investigation and perhaps even prosecution. holly, what's happening on these

planes? what's happening at these airports? do we know why folks are being so unruly? >> unruly passengers, frankly, one is too many. we are seeing them both in the air and on the ground. and we -- unruly behavior is not acceptable and it does result in delays and potential penalties. >> there is a bill that's currently languishing in a subcommittee in congress that would, among other things, create this no-fly list. it would ban people who have been convicted of being unruly, if you will, assaulting a tsa officer or somebody on a plane as well, they would be banned from flying in the future. how far would something like that go in curbing this problem? >> as you mentioned, so we work with our partners, including those on capitol hill to find ways in which we can support our

workforce, those transportation security officers, gate agents, flight attendants that may be encountering this unruly behavior. we will continue to work with them and our airline partners and clamp down on this behavior. >> reportedly, a lot of these folks acting out, they are drunk and they consumed too much alcohol on the plane or getting ready to board the plane. yesterday the head of the largest airport said that if they limited drinks on the plane, then that would go a fair amount in curbing this. what say you to that, holly? would that be helpful, in curbing alcohol? >> i know there are rules online, and i know that has gone

now accusing the former president of plotting to overturn the results. garrett haake covers the trump campaign for us. good morning. >> reporter: hey, sheinelle. good morning to you. this contains all the same charges as the original, charges to which he's already pled not guilty. this shreupld -- slimmed down indictment sharpens the legal focus on mr. trump's handling of the last election results. even as early voting getting underway for this election next month. a new indictment is basically a slimmed down version of last summer's indictment accusing mr. trump of trying to overturn the election results. what's been removed is anything called official acts of the president after the supreme court ruled last month that presidents enjoy official immunity for acts committed in office. that means like the phone call to georgia's secretary of state asking him to find votes as well as mr. trump's twitter account and the things he used it for become much more important to this case going forward.

it is wellness wednesday. this morning we are taking an eye-opening look at a condition that affects more than 24 million americans, autoimmune disease. the director of precision medicine at the marcus institute of integrative medicine at thomas jefferson university. she's also "the new york times" bestselling author of the book called "the autoimmune cure." it's filled with practical advice for healing your immune system from the inside out. thank you for coming in this morning. >> my pleasure. >> let's dig right in here. in the simplest of terms, what is an autoimmune disease? >> it is when your immune system is attacking your own cells, your tissues. usually there is an antibody response that you can measure in the blood. >> it seems like lately more people are talking about autoimmune disease. we're hearing more about it. why do you think that is? >> rates are dramatically increasing, especially after the

pandemic. a lot of folks don't realize there are three things that are required to develop autoimmune disease. the first is genetics. the second is leaky gut. the third is a trigger. that could be an infection. it could be perimenopause. it could be trauma. >> you know, i think that's so interesting. i was telling you just off camera, when you are tired, fatigued, you push through it and think, maybe it will get better. now we're learning quite often it is an autoimmune disease. especially with trauma. what is the connection there? >> trauma is a trigger that can push you over the edge. >> what kind of trauma? does it need to be extreme? >> it is not so much the trauma itself like what it was, what happened to you, it is the way it lives on your body. some of the signs can be feeling

overwhelmed, depression, anxiety, hyper vigilance, being easily triggered. >> if you have any of these things, how many people are overwhelmed, anger, all sorts of issues, are there things we can do to ease this? >> definitely. so the first thing i suggest is that you really focus on your breathing. >> okay. >> so with breath work, breath work is one of the simplest and free ways to reset your nervous system, which also helps your immune system. so i'm a big fan of deep abdominal breathing. and you can do that -- we can do it together. >> through your nose, through your mouth? what are we doing? close your eyes a little bit and take a big breath, let your belly expand toward your hand and then exhale. it's relaxing. it helps your vocal cords. >> for so long, you know, teachers tell preschoolers to take a breath, and now science backs it up. it's a good thing for us adults as well. >> science backs it up. i do it every time i get on my
