check out the northeast and the south. severe storms and tropical downpours today could mean many of you are going to be staying inside. >> angie will have more on that in a moment. we want to begin with a look at the weekend travel rush. adrienne broaddus is there at chicago o'hare international. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. i just checked and right now for flights coming into and going out of the u.s. there are more than 137 cancellations and about 450 delays. that's right now. i can tell you that number has been fluctuating throughout the morning. if you're flying leave early, driving leave early. and if you fly, prepare to wait. >> it's the final escape of the summer. >> it feels very, very busy. >> millions of americans flying into a busy travel weekend. >> i'm from washington d.c. so their airport, you know, i thought that was big. this takes it to a new level.

>> triple a says bookings for domestic travel are up by 9% compared to last year, that includes flights, rental cars, and cruises. but the price to book has dropped by 2%. >> it's busy but it's pretty organized. >> officials with tsa hope the busy weekend remains smooth but they are prepared for rough moments. >> we try to have available spare parts on hand in the event we experience any technical difficulties or challenges and make sure the equipment itself is ready to be replaced efficiently and effectively. >> reporter: over 7,000 delays happened on friday. >> i thought we should get here early it would be worse but it's not too bad. >> reporter: triple a said the best time to avoid heavy traffic on the roads is in the early

mornings and evenings. in atlanta gas prices are $3.25 per gallon below the average of $3.34 and down nearly 50 cents compared to this time last year. a busy weekend on the roads and in the sky as people plan to fit in one final break. and an official with tsa here told nbc news their goal is to keep those security checkpoint lines moving smoothly and efficiently. the overall goal they do not want people waiting in line more than 30 minutes so the average wait time right now about 20 minutes if you have general boarding and 5 to 10 minutes for those with precheck. back to you guys. >> good advice. adrienne, thank you. if you have outdoor plans this weekend, will the weather cooperate? that's the big question. angie is here with what you can expect on that.

>> we don't have all bad news guys, there will be a couple of troublesome spots. let's start with the difficult locations. it's this cold front from the northeast to the south it leaves us with a chance for severe weather we have the chance for flooding along the gulf coast. that area of low pressure is hanging around throughout the weekend. looking for the severe weather it's across portions of the appalachians. pittsburgh is one of the main cities in that, the wind and hail threat is there. tornado threat is on the low end but not great for outdoor plans. on the roads if folks are still trying to get out, i-75, 70, 76, all are quite wet. we'll see slowdowns for sure. the northeast and the midwest look. >> great but it's the lightning risk for outdoor plans across the southeast and you guessed it , the rain that sticks with us on monday. to politics now and a back

and forth from former president trump who has come under criticism this week for his comments to nbc news that an abortion rights ban in florida went too far. vaughn hillyard is in washington with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. former president trump saying friday night that he will vote no on the florida ballot measure is a defining declaration by the republican nominee. that florida referendum would allow abortions in the state up to 24 weeks by voting no trump is standing behind the current florida law which bans abortions after six weeks. mr. trump making it clear that six weeks is too restrictive but democrats are saying he wouldn't have to make these actions if it weren't for him overturning roe v. wade. it's worth noting that trump has frustrated many conservatives

recently for not committing to a federal abortion ban. attendees at mr. trump's event were relieved with his decision on the florida measure but there are still questions about his new policy proposal this week to provide free ivf care to all americans. a bill that could more than $7 billion annually to note while ivf, it is embraced there is some opposition in anti-abortion circles to such treatment because there are embryos discarded in the process. >> i want to ask you about this, abortion rights is a key motivator for democrats this election year. how is vice president harris and her campaign team responding? >> she's back here in washington today after campaign stops in georgia and, of course, that first joint interview with her running mate, tim walz but her campaign was quick to respond to the announcement saying the choice between harris and trump is clear.

she would be the one who would sign a federal law from the white house restoring reproductive rights nationally. harris is going back on the road on labor day, stopping in detroit and then pittsburgh alongside president biden. this will be the first time that the pair, biden and harris will take the stage together since harris became the party's nominee in chicago. >> and a week and a half away from the first presidential debate. perhaps the only one between trump and harris. to new developments to one of those charged in the death of "friends" star matthew perry. one of the doctors involved making his court appearance on friday. >> reporter: good morning. dr. mark chavez one of two doctors charged in connection with matthew perry's death made his first court appearance on friday where the judge did allow a plea deal to move forward. he's charged with one count of

conspiracy to distribute ketamine. even though he struck this plea deal with prosecutors he could still face up to 10 years behind bars and he has already had his medical license suspended. outside the courthouse, his attorney telling nbc news his client feels incredible remorse. this indictment from the california department of justice and fbi earlier this month cited a text exchange between chavez and is it other doctor involved in which they discuss selling perry ketamine. in one he writes i wonder how much this moron will pay. chavez is one of five individuals charged and he's not the only one who struck a plea deal. perry's assistant and a street dealer have both pled guilty. there are two still fighting their charges who have pled not guilty and this could go to trial this fall. >> thank you so much.

president zelenskyy is asking for the go ahead to use long range missiles against russia. erin, what's the latest? >> reporter: laura, ukraine's defense minister was in washington d.c. yesterday where he met with his american counterpart, defense secretary lloyd austin. during that meeting he pressed for the united states to finally give ukraine the green light to use long range weapons on russian territory. something that the biden administration has so far ruled out citing concerns of escalating the conflict following that meeting ukraine's defense minister gave an interview saying it is something that the administration is considering. that meeting on the same day of yet another russian deadly air assault, this time on the city of kharkiv, killing at least seven, including a 14-year-old

girl according to ukrainian officials russian war planes launched five glide bombs striking the city president zelenskyy saying had ukraine had the green light to launch attacks that could have been avoiding saying there's no reason to restrict defenses. to a story that rocked the world of hockey. a top star and his brother killed by a suspected drunk driver the day before their sister was to be married. >> reporter: outside the columbus blue jacket stadium, flowers. on thursday night police say the

31-year-old and his younger brother were killed by a suspected drunk driver while riding bikes near their hometown. johnny was the father of a baby boy and girl, matthew a hockey coach and husband. friday their sister was supposed to be married. the driver, sean higgins charged with two counts of vehicular homicide. he told an officer he had five to six beers he admitted alcohol contributed to his inpatients and reckless driving. he tried to pass an suv hitting the brothers. higgins has not entered a plea. the brother's uncle writing last night we lost two husbands, two fathers, two sons, two brothers, truly two amazing humans. jerry york was their coach at boston college. >> it sounds like they made an impression at boston college. >> they did. the way they carried themselves

winward islands it has the best chance of developing the next couple of days. as we get into next week we could see a tropical depression. then you see is the area in the gulf of mexico, a coastal low, 20% chance of developing into a depression. but it's impactful to the gulf coast as we get through the weekend and the weekend plans could be interrupted by some of the rain. the heavy rain will be again draped across portions closer to new orleans. we'll see i 10 be soggy south of that. rainfall rates will be impressive too. flooding concerns will be there. we'll watch it into your sunday. so unfortunately not just your saturday in this region but your sunday is quite wet and from galveston to new orleans the rain winds down as we get closer to sunset on sunday. looking for time f

a critical deadline in the deal to sell the a's coliseum to a private investment group. for years, the site has been co-owned half by the oakland city and half by the a's. now, in two separate deals, the african american sports and entertainment group has agreed to buy the entire property. but there are some key details that could turn into big complications. the group has agreed to pay the a's $125 million, but the county has to still approve that deal. as for the city's half, there is an even more critical deadline. the group has to pay most of the money to help balance the city's budget and the first $5 million has to get to oakland by tomorrow. or a so-called contingency budget would kick in, triggering major cuts to public safety, staffing and services. lanes are back open this morning after a fiery crash on westbound i-80 in san pablo. this citizen video from the scene you can see at least three cars involved in the crash. two

a little less with tsa precheck and an agent with tsa said the goal is to keep the lines sbhort moving efficiently. they don't want people waiting in line longer than 30 minutes. triple a is estimating that 17 million americans are expected to travel this holiday. they say the best time to travel is in the morning to avoid heavy traffic and in the evenings. right now there are about 140 flight cancellations for the entire country. triple a said bookings for domestic travel are up 9% compared to last year. that includes flights, rental cars and cruises. but the bright to book has dropped by nearly 2% and we've been talking about the weather that led to delays and cancellations for folks yesterday. there were more than 400 cancellations and about 7,000 delays. meanwhile, drivers are getting a break at the pump.
