the niners selected him with the 31st overall pick in the first round of april's nfl draft. he started his college career as a teammate of star receiver brandon aiyuk at arizona state, before playing his last two years at florida. he runs good routes and has really good hands. i've seen him up close in practice. now he missed most of training camp in all three preseason games due to a hamstring injury and a partially dislocated shoulder joint. now, the bad shoulder dates back to college. he returned to practice this week, but as you see in the video, he is wearing a non-contact blue jersey because of his shoulder. in a statement released by the team, the 49ers say, quote, our thoughts and prayers are with ricky and the entire pearsall family as of today's or after today's incident. it is unknown if pearsall will be available for the 49ers season opener a week from monday against the new york jets. terry. anthony. thank you very much. and we're getting reaction from fellow players

our team is going to continue to follow this story for you. we have another live update coming up at 830. now to a story in our making it in the bay series. san jose is now at the top of the list of most expensive cities to live in. according to data collected by real estate platform clever, san jose is the most expensive city to both buy a home or rent a home. the list ranks the 50 most populous cities in the u.s. the median price of a home is about $1.5 million. the median rent about 3300 a month. that makes it slightly cheaper to rent than buy. san francisco comes in at number two on the list, and los angeles number three. the san mateo county sheriff's department is celebrating women today for graduating from its women's boot camp. 20 women started the camp at the beginning of the month. the goal was to help them reach their fitness goals and building their confidence, their strength, their endurance, and to help them prepare for a career in law enforcement. four weeks later, the camp ended. the women graduated. today we spoke with
8:18 pm
the sheriff who launched this program. this boot camp has really helped these women with the confidence that they could do it. you know, you could be a mom and be a law enforcement officer. this program has really helped women believe in themselves. and along the way they have, you know, now have friends that they'll have for the rest of their lives. it's a bunch you know, it's camaraderie. the next step for these women to become a deputy is something they are probably very ready for. and that is to take a physical fitness test. all right. here's a live look at sfo. as a lot of folks are hitting the road and the skies this holiday weekend. according to data from triple a, the bay area is a top travel destination for the three day weekend storms in the east and midwest snarled air traffic at quite a few airports yesterday, but things are running relatively smoothly at san francisco international. barring some just ripple effects of delays and cancellations elsewhere. sfo leaders say yesterday about 85,000 people passed through the airport
8:19 pm
today. they expect about 50,000. a lot of people taking to the skies and at least in the bay area, they're pretty darn clear today. yeah. no issues. locally, we had a little bit of low clouds for the morning, but our temperatures very nice. the nicest weather in the 7-day forecast right here on the holiday weekend. in fact, tomorrow may trend slightly cooler as we approach labor day. let's show you what we have outside right now. i'd say some light jacket weather if you're going to be out in the next couple of hours already down into the upper 60s in san jose. clear skies there. we'll take you over to dublin 68 right now. now fast forward about four days from now. we'll be in the upper 90s at this hour. so enjoy those upper 60s we have out there right now. so much hotter weather around the corner for next week. 61 is currently in san rafael and there is a gorgeous view. look at san francisco fog free. 61 degrees. and as you take a look at what we're expecting to wrap up this labor day weekend, mild temperatures. but just as soon as it ends. look what happens on tuesday. we're back in the 90s and hundreds showing up as we
8:20 pm
head towards the middle part of the week. so yes, for now, we're fine. we'll eventually have those low clouds spilling back towards san francisco overnight 60s and still a few low 70s. inland temperatures have trended cooler than 24 hours ago, and a big part of the reason why that strong sea breeze going into fairfield right now at about 22mph. that delta breeze, even cooling down sacramento and stockton. locally, not a lot of weather here, but for areas around lake tahoe, we've seen a few isolated showers, mainly south of lake tahoe and south of highway 50. might see a little bit of that during the afternoon, but the bigger story for us will be the low clouds and a few high clouds for tomorrow afternoon. so notice waking up to those cloudy skies, a little bit of mist early in the day and then by, let's say mid afternoon to evening, we'll begin to see a few high clouds passing by for some filtered sunshine. around 5:00 tomorrow. so the morning starts off cool numbers in the 50s, and then our highs tomorrow down a couple degrees from today, 78 in san jose tomorrow. still expecting mid 80s closer to morgan hill
8:21 pm
and over towards the tri valley and concord. after the morning clouds break up. mid 80s in the afternoon. low 70s into oakland 78 in redwood city in downtown san francisco, close to 70 degrees and our north bay temperatures tomorrow in the 80s and upper 70s so nice and comfortable. we'll go three for three with that monday forecast just slightly warmer inland temperatures in the mid 80s. but watch what happens tuesday. just like that. 90s and hundreds again 90s in san jose, 80s and 90s bayside tuesday and wednesday likely to be the hottest days of the week. and then we'll see a little bit of cooling as we head towards next weekend. so three days of heat tuesday through thursday and then we'll begin to see the sea breeze pick up for next weekend. so timing wise, you've got comfortable weather for this labor day weekend and comfortable temperatures approaching next weekend. so that's good on the timing. but that heat after how comfortable it is now, it's going to take some folks by surprise there on
8:22 pm
tuesday and wednesday. that's almost a 20 degree jump. temperatures happening tuesday because of you. it won't be taking people by surprise. thank you. there you go. all right. thanks. all right. still to come? we check in with a track and field star who's competing at the paralympics and learn where he got his style from
8:24 pm
looks and i'm about to do some serious name dropping. here we go. the track and field star inherited his fashion sense from his grandmother, who at one point was signed by the same agency as marilyn monroe. there we go. yeah. all right, well, in our series, my new favorite paralympian, hosted by 12 time olympic medalist natalie coughlin and sports reporter zena keita mayhew, talks about losing his grandma, who he called his best friend. everyone who knew shirley culpepper. mayhew knew those glasses. they were just big, stylish, gold framed pink and purple tinted
8:25 pm
glasses. he's referring to the gold frame elvis presley pink glasses that scott mayhew, nick's father and shirley's son, would wear them everywhere. and even when she would, even when she didn't need to wear them, she would wear them just because it was kind of like her signature glasses. so she'd wear them into the bowling alley, and we'd have to remind her, hey, mom, you know, you can take them off now. and she's like, i'm fine with them. she says, i get to see the world through pink rose glasses. nick spent a lot of time with his grandparents. his parents separated when nick was a child. he and his older brother, thomas lived with their mom, who spent most of her time working. i think they just they trusted her so much so that, you know, they just felt so comfortable around her. she was very transparent and direct about everything in life, including the hard truths. but there was one thing she wasn't honest about. when she was diagnosed with her illness, she
8:26 pm
wasn't honest with any of us. unbeknownst to the family, shirley had been diagnosed with als and frontotemporal dementia. als is a terminal neurodegenerative disease that impacts muscle function. frontotemporal dementia alters a person's behavior and leads to memory loss. we found out about it from the neurologist, and when he said, you know, it's been there a while, and my brother and i looked at my mom, she kind of smiled and said, forgot to tell you. by the time the family found out, the disease had progressed. within six months, shirley was in the hospital in a coma. nick's grandma was a model before she got married. he's now doing the same in 2022. nick was asked to walk the hugo boss rebrand fashion show and has done a number of other fashion campaigns. this was her life. she would be over the moon about it being able to meet some of
8:27 pm
the women that i've met in, you know, the people i've been able to work with. i think my grandma would have loved that. i think that, you know, she would have she would have thrived in those, you know, environments. and to be there with her grandson would have been just the, you know, the cherry on top. and, you know, she i know she's looking down very proud. and she might have her own little in a piece of advice and little tidbits and little, you know, little adjustments. but, you know, that's just that's just who she was. she was a perfectionist in her own fashion. so i know she's looking down and she's she's proud. that's for sure. and you can watch all the paralympics action on nbc and peacock. the games continue through september 8th. all right. we've got a lot more coming up at 8.30 just ahead. we continue to follow that. breaking news. 49ers rookie ricky pearsall shot in an attempted robbery in san francisco. we're live with what we're learning about the investigation and his condition tonight
8:30 pm
thank you for joining us in this special edition of nbc bay area news. i'm terry mcsweeney and i'm gia vang. we continue to follow breaking news in san francisco. 49ers rookie ricky pearsall shot during an attempted robbery in union square. we have live team coverage from the city tonight. alyssa goard is at the scene, but let's go first to marianne favro at sf general, where pearsall is being treated. maryann on deck here addressing the shooting as you said. yes. right now ricky pearsall is recovering here at sf general. we're told he is now in stable condition. also within the last hour, the san francisco police chief detailed what happened. he said that it was an attempted robbery. a 17 year old man from tracy attempted to rob pearsall, and the two scuffled during that
8:31 pm
battle, the gun went off and it ended up hitting both pearsall and the 17 year old, who is now also at san francisco. general hospitalized in stable condition. also, we heard from district attorney brooke jenkins, and we heard from the mayor london breed. here's what she had to say about the shooting. he has a bright future, and i look forward to seeing him recover and get back on the field. i'm also grateful for the quick action of our police officers, who immediately with an amended, responded to the situation, apprehended the suspect. there were. witnesses tell us that they did see pearsall walk with the assistance of other emergency workers there at the scene, and to get into the into the ambulance. he actually got onto a gurney and then was placed inside the ambulance. and we
8:32 pm
also heard from brooke jenkins that they were looking into announcing what charges the 17 year old will face sometime later this week. but you have to remember because he has a minor, only 17 years old, there's a lot of information that right now they can't release because he is a juvenile. so again, here at the hospital, we have seen a lot of people come here, including family members of pearsall and also the general manager of the 49ers is here as well. john lynch. so a big response from the 49ers here at the hospital and there is an increased police presence here. while pearsall is in the hospital as well. back to you. marianne favro live at san francisco general. thank you very much for that. now let's go back to the scene of the crime, literally. nbc bay area's alyssa goard live near union square, where the attempted robbery and the shooting happened. the good news, of course, through all of this is ricky pearsall is in

caucus pulled two bills that would have created a fund and an agency to distribute reparation, saying they need more work. well, just into our newsroom, israeli american hersh goldberg-polin, who was born in the east bay, is among those found dead in gaza. poland was one of the hostages taken by hamas in october. and it comes as israel and hamas appear to be closing and reaching a ceasefire agreement. president biden announced today that officials are on the verge of reaching a ceasefire deal. he made the comment after attending church in delaware. the president also noted that his staff has spoken to israeli leaders, and confirmed that troops have recovered bodies from gaza. there's a lot of speculation on who they are and the names, and i'm not at liberty to do that at this moment. so the families are notified and it's time to support hamby. we should end this war. i think we're on the verge of having an agreement at this time to end it. it's time to finish it. again, we have learned, sadly, one of those hostages is israeli american.

8:37 pm
also a large effort gap between reposting something on x versus actually walking into your polling station and casting your vote. who are you voting for this election? i'm voting for donald trump. i'll be voting for kamala harris. as of right now, neither candidate. i'm still looking to see if any candidate fundamentally changes. i'm not hopeful about that. according to tufts university, nearly 41 million members of gen z are eligible to vote this year, and that's why political strategists are focusing their attention on social media. i'm on tiktok. i see how kamala harris's campaign has been utilizing that as a tool, and it really is getting young people excited to participate. and 2024 is different because social media engagement is playing out in real time, every single moment that either trump messed up or biden in particular messed up. that was blasted in every single social media platform. that's all i saw for a week. imani cheers a digital storytelling

professor at george washington university, says social media gives politicians the chance to directly engage young voters. you have to meet people literally where they are and the way we've seen campaigning go about where, yes, having ads, you know, maybe even holding, hosting rallies. but many are wondering if virtual engagement is enough. if it starts to tail off or it becomes less popular, i think people might be less motivated to go and vote because it's not what they see. everyone else doing. regardless, november is right around the corner. i try not my best not to be influenced too much by what i see on social media, but i do think it plays a big role in the continued polarization of this country. and only time will tell if social media outreach will empower america's youngest voters to cast their ballots in washington. ariel hixson, nbc news. nbc's meet the press will have more on the upcoming election tomorrow morning. one

a little different. it involves people going outside their comfort zone to do something good for someone else. and in this case, with life changing results. here is nbc bay area's garvin thomas. if this were your berkeley home and you had a spare room, how would you find someone to rent it and online? add a flier posted at the local coffee shop. while robert fletcher and chen wang found joy pagaduan in something of a nontraditional way, but one, as joey puts it, that was nothing

short of life changing. what they did for me is probably the single kindest thing that anybody has ever done for me. almost no money. now to understand why robert and chen renting a room to joey is so special. well, you have to know who his last landlord was. the california department of corrections and rehabilitation. joey spent 23 years there after being convicted as a teenager of second degree murder. i entered prison believing that, you know, this was life. this is where i was going to spend the rest of my life. but in 2020, joey was released, and while he had done much work on himself to prepare himself for life outside of prison, he was understandably worried. if i wasn't able to, like, secure long term housing for myself, it was a very real possibility that it could be on the streets. but then joey heard about impact justice's homecoming project starting in 2018. the oakland based nonprofit places those recently released from prison, with those

willing to rent to them for six months. people like robert and chen. it's kind of about living your values. you know, you talk about like, oh, we want, you know, the world to be a better place, but you're not really like a lot of people aren't willing to put themselves out there to, you know, in awkward or challenging situations in order to make that happen. and, you know, for us, i think it is about living our values. we're going to challenge ourselves to do things that make us uncomfortable. but the couple felt less uncomfortable about bringing joey into their home after learning more about the process. first, of course, is the vetting done by the parole board before an inmate is released? it takes quite a long time. then homecoming project director bernadette butler says it's their turn. they have to. on top of that, go through our own vetting process. that is, before they even go through what we call a matching process, where host and participants meet each other. robert chen and joey say they knew not long after being matched that they'd be a

good fit, but really had no idea how good. after the first six months, they asked joey to stay, and he's now been living with them for two years. they even go on trips together. robert and chen said they wanted to do more than just talk about the causes they believe in. they wanted to do something. what they did was change all their lives for the better. i mean, i think we've essentially added like another family member. they took me into their home. they trusted me with their family. and, you know, that's something i can, like, never repay. garvin thomas reporter. well another gold from the paralympics for team usa. 21 year old olivia chamber claimed her first medal this morning at the women's 400 meter freestyle. she's a rising senior at the university of northern iowa. check out lane for what you see right there, clearly marked. chamber competes alongside athletes with vision impairment. she's getting a bit of a break

from competing, but it's going to be back in the pool monday for the 50 meter freestyle. congratulations. can't wait to watch more. all right. in san francisco today, wrestlers got the chance to learn from some true professionals this morning. olympian amit elor appeared as a special guest at a wrestling seminar. you can see the room is packed with eager learners. this summer in paris, elor from walnut creek became the youngest u.s. wrestler to win gold at the age of 20. she says she likes to participate in seminars to give back to the sport that changed her life. i'm the wrestler i am today because of all the opportunities and from growing up here in the bay area. it's just amazing and i feel like when you win an olympic medal, you know, it's not just for yourself, it's for everybody, it's for where you're from. and the people who have helped you along the way. i really like her. we've done some stories on her and she seems really amazing. okay. over 100 people, they signed up for this seminar, and that's the real wrestling. there's no drop kicks off the top rope, that kind of thing. that would be a separate issue.

she may get into it later. we'll just have to follow her career. but congratulations on all you've done. absolutely. all right. rob mayeda here now. and let's talk about this gorgeous weather we've had. we've got good day. one of three of beautiful weather changes will be on the way, though. that 7-day forecast, if you like summer weather. well, there'll be plenty of it just after labor day weekend. we begin the weekend off a bit of a cooldown in terms of the temperatures. if you look around the bay area, you'll see we're actually slightly below average for highs today at 79. in san jose, about average inland san francisco in the 60s, probably about same ballpark tomorrow before bigger changes roll in tuesday and wednesday. right now, upper 60s in san jose. if the clear skies same around dublin and the tri-valley as you head up to the north bay, it has cooled off 60 now in san rafael and over in san francisco, waiting for the fog to fill back in. but downtown, looking pretty nice. 61 degrees currently in san francisco. so good news where the heat is concerned. it's mostly bottled up to after tuesday, so we're going to see more of these mild temperatures
8:51 pm
a little bit warmer on labor day monday. but tuesday onward midweek we could be seeing those 90s and one hundreds making a comeback. so for now, the ocean air conditioning holding strong around the bay area you see the 24 hour temperature change and the wind, by the way, still going pretty good through fairfield southwest at 22mph. even though it's clear right now around san francisco. eventually we'll see the low clouds spill locally inland for the morning hours and back into the sunshine. by mid-morning across the bay and a few high clouds at times during the day tomorrow. so we've got numbers in the low 50s for the morning and then for the afternoon. pretty comfortable temperatures as we got those mostly sunny skies coming back again, upper 70s like we had today in san jose, expected again tomorrow, mid 80s around morgan hill, tri valley northward up to concord, vallejo about 84 degrees 76 fremont and 78 in redwood city, downtown san francisco. tomorrow near 70 after sunset. coastside in the mid 60s. similar. if you're heading up to point reyes, you can see mill valley at 76 degrees and 80. in sonoma. so

day three of the three day holiday weekend looking very nice in terms of the temperatures. a little bit warmer, though, some upper 80s in reaching those inland valleys, but nothing compared to where temperatures will go on tuesday. look at that 90s to about 100 degrees in concord and walnut creek. nothing but 90s across the north bay valleys and areas south of san jose. widespread 80s bayside that is tuesday into wednesday. the good news here the heat is not going to stick around too long, as you'll notice a transition starting thursday and friday. look at san francisco temperatures starting to cool down as we head into the weekend. right now we seem to be in a pattern of mid week warm ups and weekend cool downs, which should be the case as we head towards friday and saturday. so labor day weekend looks fine, but we're going to have to deal with that midweek heat tuesday through thursday. all right, i guess. i guess at least in the middle of the week. not for your weekend. best weather for the weekend. all right rob, thanks. all right anthony flores here now with a fantastic story about the blue and gold. yeah. and any weather is great weather for college
