charges against the suspect next week. there will be accountability for those who commit these types of acts in san francisco. late saturday, pearson's father arrived at san francisco general with a police escort. 49ers general manager john lynch and other team leaders came to the hospital as well to offer support to the 23 year old rookie. police chief scott says there is no evidence that the suspect targeted pearsall because he is a pro football player in san francisco. marianne favro nbc bay area news. and as we've been reporting, thanks, mariam. this all happened a block from union square, one of san francisco's most popular tourist spots and a busy spot during the holiday season which is coming up upon us. the san francisco police chief is vowing to make sure all people feel safe there. today in the bay's alyssa goard continues our team coverage. the scene is clear, but word of the shooting
7:05 am
has spread quickly and lots of people are actually coming up to us here and wanting to talk about what happened. this exact spot here on the street was marked with blood evidence, markers, a shoe and a hat here on the sidewalk on geary, right near grant. this is only a block away from union square. the city began boosting law enforcement presence around union square several years ago in the wake of high profile robberies, with extra patrols happening around the holiday season. police chief bill scott said that having that extra presence in union square plus extra patrols nearby, helped to apprehend the suspect in this case quickly. still, he says, after this incident, you will be seeing more police nearby. usually when things like this happen, people get very get get anxiety and we want to make sure that the public knows that we're there for them. so we will increase that deployment. and we were going to do that during the holiday season anyway. but we're
7:06 am
going to move that up. and san francisco's police chief says there are actually lots of surveillance cameras in this area around union square. and police will be going through the surveillance video and combing through any details that they can add to their investigation. in san francisco, alyssa goard, nbc, bay area news. many of peirsol's teammates are reacting to the shooting, including niners star deebo samuel. about an hour after the attempted robbery and shooting, he tweeted, quote, he's good, thank god. and long snapper taybor pepper wrote, quote, glad to hear ricky is stable. district attorney brooke jenkins, meanwhile, as marianne mentioned, says she expects to file charges against that suspect this week in juvenile court. we will continue to bring you the latest updates on pearsall's recovery and those charges on our website, nbcbayarea.com, as well as on our nbc bay area app. a follow up now on a beloved family owned

hardware store. last weekend, it was largely gutted by a fire, and over the last few days, burglars targeted it twice. great wall hardware has been in san francisco's outer sunset for more than 40 years. the owner, albert chow, tells us the store on taraval street caught fire last weekend, and even though it was heavily damaged, it was burglarized three days ago and again friday night. chow tells us the burglars went through everything, including two attached apartments above the store. neighbors tell us chow is a well loved leader in their community. they hope the store between 28th and 29th avenues will recover and reopen soon. federal investigators are looking into what caused a deadly plane crash in the north bay. they are heading there today. it happened in novato at gnoss field airport just before four yesterday afternoon. the marin county sheriff's office tells us a small plane was

taking off and for some reason, crash landed into a hangar bursting into flames. the pilot was killed. he was the only person on board. the faa and ntsb are investigating. a busy stretch of 580 is back open after a freeway shooting in oakland. it happened in broad daylight two yesterday afternoon on eastbound 580 near seminary avenue. the chp says two people in the car were shot. they were taken to the hospital. no word on how they're doing. we're also waiting to hear if any arrests have been made and we are following devastating developing news out of the middle east, where israeli forces have recovered six bodies in gaza. late last night, the family of israeli-american hostage hirsh goldberg-polin announced that his body was among those found. poland was born in berkeley and his family was featured at the dnc, pleading for his and other

hostages safe return. the grim discovery comes as israel and hamas appear close to a ceasefire deal. president biden voiced optimism for a deal. reacting to news of hersh goldberg-polin death. biden wrote a statement that reads in part, i am devastated and outraged. hersh was among the innocents brutally attacked while attending a music festival for peace in israel on october seventh. it is a tragic. it is as tragic as it is reprehensible. make no mistake. hamas leaders will pay for these crimes and we will keep working around the clock for a deal to secure the release of the remaining hostages. still optimistic because the leaders of both have led and met, and both in egypt are people are continuing to meet, and we think we can close the deal. they've all said they agree on the principles. so keep your fingers crossed. the two sides have come close several times before, but
7:10 am
there has been no deal nor trade in nine months. now to a follow up to a story we brought you yesterday morning, the city of oakland has met its deadline in the sale of the a's coliseum to an entertainment group. that announcement, coming from mayor sheng thao late yesterday, and the african american sports entertainment group, the league has agreed to pay the city of oakland $105 million as part of a major redevelopment plan for the coliseum. critically, this sale is a major part of the mayor's plan to close oakland's budget deficit. if it hadn't been signed by today, the city may have had to been forced to make major cuts. this announcement comes after the group already closed a deal with the a's for their stake in the coliseum. 710 right now. much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, we take you live to washington, d.c. for our weekly interview with kristen welker, who has a pview ofre

i'll say what city hall insiders won't. we have a drug, homelessness, and economic recovery crisis, because the system that's supposed to fix things is the problem. record budgets. fewer officers. business killing bureaucracy. the insiders won't change a system built for their benefit.

ro khanna from silicon valley has been seen in interviews saying he's advised the harris-walz campaign on crypto and the importance of digital assets. and he's also been vocal about harris's stance on the war in gaza. please join me in welcoming kristen welker, moderator of meet the press. hi, kristen. as always, great to see you this morning. you had an exclusive interview with our local congressman, representative khanna. i'm wondering if you can give us a sort of look at what he was telling you this morning in terms of what he believes the harris-walz ticket needs to do to focus on between now and november. well, we did start off kira by talking about the devastating news those six hostages discovered to have been killed by hamas, including israeli american hersh
7:14 am
goldberg-polin. so he talked about how devastated he was to learn that. and he also talked about the importance of bringing this conflict to an end and to getting a hostage deal. and he talked about when you think about your initial question, what does he want to see from the harris candidacy and a potential harris administration? look, he said he wants her to reevaluate the policy as it relates to the middle east. he thinks that aid should be conditioned. and so those are among the things that he has been pushing for, both publicly and privately. so we talk about all of that. it's a really fascinating conversation. but again, just zooming out, just the devastation of the day, waking up to this horrific news that those six precious lives were lost in gaza. and indeed, we've been following hersh's his parents story. he was born here in the bay area, and of course, our hearts go out to all those victims families. kristen, as always, thanks for that preview.
7:15 am
we look forward to seeing you in about 45 minutes from now. we hope you join christian for this morning's meet the press. as mentioned, she will have those exclusive interviews with representative ro khanna as well as senator tom cotton. if you just stick right here with us for today in the bay, meet the press is on at 8 a.m, right after this newscast. and coming up in about 30 minutes from now, we'll talk to nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston for our weekly segment. we'll take a look at the tactics. some supporters are using to try to sway the campaigns. all right. the legislative session is now over. we've reported on this yesterday morning. one issue on the governor's priority list did not make last night's deadline. governor newsom had called a special session to give lawmakers more time to act on legislation to help prevent gas price spikes. on wednesday, newsom's plan was written into senate bill 950, but the assembly had not yet considered
7:16 am
it. the bill would have authorized the california energy commission to require oil refiners to maintain a minimum fuel reserve in order to avoid supply shortages that create high gas prices. chevron opposes the plan, writing in a letter that it would erode energy infrastructure and increase gas prices in nevada and arizona, two bills connected to reparations were pulled at the last minute last night, leading to protests inside the state capitol. protesters gathered after the black caucus decided to postpone action on two measures that would have created a fund and an agency to distribute reparations. demonstrators confronted black caucus chair lori wilson, who is from the north bay. wilson says the bills need more work. lawmakers did end up passing a bill that allows for the return of land or compensation to those whose property was unjustly seized by the government, as

well as a bill that issues a formal apology for laws and practices that have harmed black people. now to alameda county, where there is a new phone scam warning from the sheriff. they say someone is calling people impersonating a deputy and asking you to give them information to resolve a legal matter in a voicemail from the scammer that. nbc bay area has listened to. they claim that there a lieutenant from alameda county, and they need you to call them back on the sheriff's office non-emergency line for a time sensitive legal matter. if you do the sheriff's office says scammers may try to trick you by confusing you with some facts. so you're going to have truths with some lies. the truth would have been, yes, our substation is located at 15,001 foothill boulevard. the lie is there is no lieutenant owens johnson or whatever name they give you. the

sheriff's office is urging anyone who gets these calls to contact them directly, meaning look up their number and call that number if the call is fake. the victim can make a report with the alameda county sheriff's department right away. cal fire and the california department of corrections got a shout out from a reality star, kim kardashian and her sister kendall jenner were in the cierra this week. kardashian shared these pictures on instagram. the sisters visited incarcerated fire camps in amador and el dorado counties. camp participants support state, local and federal agencies responses to emergencies, including fires. the program can also be an important part of an incarcerated person's rehabilitation. new this morning, new research says catching up on sleep on the weekends may come with added health benefits. in fact, sleeping in on the weekends may significantly decrease the risk
7:19 am
of heart disease. research by the european society of cardiology congress in london found people who got the most sleep on the weekend were 19% less likely to develop heart disease. a recent gallup poll found only 42% of u.s. adults get as much sleep as they need, and that includes the two of us. we do not get as much sleep as we need. throw that out the window for us. bad news for us. good news for everyone at home. watching in bed right now. we'll live vicariously through our viewers. get enough sleep? exactly. but hey, some of our cameras are looking like sleeping in weather. look at santa rosa, kira. look at that low visibility through 101 up there. we are looking at some of the fog starting to make its return as we go through this morning. and i'll tell you what's happening. i don't know if you can see it right there. that's kind of the a little blob of clouds that are rotating counterclockwise. what's that? what that going to do is it's going to bring in more of that onshore wind and some cloud cover. so keeping temperatures a
7:20 am
little bit cooler today we'll watch it peel back though of course typical back towards the coastline around mid-morning and then give way to a nice afternoon. you may notice some high clouds at times, but overall a stunning sunday first day of the of the new month for us. the winds though are going to pick up, so if you have any picnic plans, might want to hold down those napkins or it could be a good day to air out the laundry instead of using the dryer. we're looking at winds through the petaluma gap, through the delta could be gusty at times. 20 to 30 miles an hour, but then it should calm down for the evening time. still remaining though into parts of the delta as far as our temperatures here, hour by hour for us, we are looking at a pretty mild below average sunday. we'll do 70s by the middle of the afternoon in the north bay, east bay and the south bay. cool and towards the coast and the peninsula and those mid 60s and our afternoon highs are going to stay below average. we'll do 80 in santa rosa, 79 in napa, 82 in concord. and we'll do also those mid 80s
7:21 am
through parts of morgan hill and gilroy, 78, in downtown san jose. and we'll keep it in the upper 60s through san mateo and out towards half moon bay. it will be breezy, but enjoy that, because in the next couple of days we're going to be wishing that that natural ac was with us for our labor day monday. we are looking at temperatures in not much change from today will be just a little bit warmer. not too much. it will be nice and comfortable to enjoy those outdoor plans. we will start the morning with some coastal fog and some drizzle, but then give way to some 70s and 80s inland and nice and comfortable by the water. here's where we need that natural ac and when it's back to school and back to work for everybody. and when we want to make it like a pool day for our labor day holiday won't be until tuesday, wednesday and thursday, we're looking at the heat ramping up a lot of triple digits on the board. ukiah concord, fairfield. we could reach those down here in the south bay as well, and look at the bay 83, in san francisco to 90 in hayward, and it continues through there. on wednesday, i
7:22 am
think most of that peak will be saturated. heat will be saturated through parts of solano county up towards the north bay as well. and that brings, of course, some fire danger concerns. so please as well as keeping yourself hydrated and just aware of the heat on our bodies, make sure that we're keeping an eye on those hills over the next couple of days. and i just see it continuing on into thursday as well. temperatures for today and tomorrow in the 80s, and then it just skyrockets right there tuesday, wednesday and thursday and even into next weekend. well, by friday, still in the 90s in some places we won't start to feel that cooling until we get on into saturday. and just san francisco. as stunning as it is, people in the city don't have ac, so it's going to be a little bit of a struggle to cool ourselves down. the beaches are going to be packed for sure. it really is a struggle with no ac. all right, cynthia, thanks. i need to quickly get to some breaking news. this morning that workers at some of the bay area's busiest hotels are now on strike. this is a live look at
7:23 am

of september. here we go. with our temperatures for labor day, we're going to uptick the temperatures just a little bit. it won't be too crazy. mid 80s for parts of santa rosa over on through concord 86. i've got you there for tomorrow as well as in morgan hill. we'll get some comfortable 70s as we go through the inner bay. 77 in hayward, 71 in san mateo. but here is where the fun begins, and maybe not so fun if we're trying to find our ways to cool down and avoid any fire danger. we're going to see tuesday and wednesday as battling it out for the hottest days of the week. we go on in and look at some more of those triple digit temperatures starting to appear in places like concord up towards ukiah. fairfield valleys are going to be really hot, but not only them, it's a pretty rare event here where we see upper 80s through oakland, san mateo, hayward. i've got you at 89, and it really doesn't start to break apart until we get on into the second half of the week. we'll track some possibly slightly cooler numbers as we go on into next weekend, but for right now,

goal when packing lunches and seeing that food come right back home. today in the bay's marcus washington has some ideas for your picky eater. good morning kira. well, in some cases, good grades are only half the battle for kids. now, back at school, we also have to think about the picky eaters, which the other half of that battle is, of course, staying nourished. experts suggest a number of

strategies there for parents, for example, pick a lunch box depicting your child's favorite character, or have your children practice eating in the amount of time they'll have at school. also, go to the grocery store with your kids. shop together to find those school lunch items, or even allow them to pack their own meals. also, look, don't obsess over what your kids don't eat. here's one speech-language pathologist who actually helps children with feeding and swallowing disorders. think about when you ask your child to put their shoes on or pick up their toys, right? what do they do? they dig their heels in. so the more you pressure them to eat when it's hard for them, the less they're going to want to do it, and then it's going to make eating a stressful relationship, or they're not going to have a good relationship with food. so give them the freedom and the independence to try foods on their own, set them up for success and give them opportunities to do so. but don't pressure them. now, concerned parents always advise to talk to their pediatricians, but the american speech language hearing association also links professionals who can help you

shift back now to decision 2024. and four years ago, former president donald trump questioned the outcome of the 2020 presidential campaign, calling the election results rigged. now democrats are growing concerned that republicans are planting seeds with legal suits to overturn a trump defeat this fall. democrats saying it's part of a concerted effort to sow distrust of the 2024 results. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins us. hi, larry, as always, great to see you. can you explain this approach? i can, and you know what's interesting by the way, just following up what you said, kara, 70% of republicans today believe that the election was stolen, 70%. okay. we're talking about, you know, a pretty alienated group of people. now, not all of these guys are trying to interrupt the election. the 2024 election. but there is a small number of republicans who think if they can control who

votes ahead of time, it won't really matter when the election results come out because they'll win. that's different than the last time when so many tried to disrupt the outcome by counting the votes, and they're at it. so if they're trying to essentially stop harris supporters from voting, how are they doing that and where are they doing that? pretty much. and you always look to the battleground states, the battleground states, those seven states that are so important because really all the other decisions have been made in most states. one sided, one way or the other. and in these states we see various activities going on. for example, in north carolina, a battleground state, republicans are trying to stop the election there by by making sure that noncitizens are not on the election rolls. let me tell you something. noncitizens don't vote, but nonetheless, they're making that a case, so to speak. so they're making trouble on that side in arizona, republicans are suing the governor because the governor has decided to add opportunities for mail in drop off boxes and
7:52 am
extend pre pre election voting time. so again they're trying to curb those who vote because they think many of those will be democrats. and another one in georgia. remember georgia. all i need is 11,780 votes. former president said trying to win the election after the fact. well, in georgia, what we see is republicans trying to give county el monte county officials the right to prevent election results from coming in if they have any kind of questions whatsoever. and in fact, all they're supposed to do is count them. that's what their job is. they have other people do that. so there's three examples where republicans are trying to control who votes ahead of time, therefore making it easier to win at the end. not all republicans are doing this. let's be clear. but there's a small group just like there was after 2020 out there being very, very active. so quickly before we let you go, what's being done to prevent this or what can be done? armies armies. democratic

and republican armies. thousands of lawyers ready to pounce on election results and election participation if they think something wrong is going on. so you think elections are, you know, pretty commonplace? we all vote. there are tens of thousands of people out there on both sides of this thing ready to go state by state, precinct by precinct, to make sure the vote is right for them. extremely stressful. as we near november. all right, larry, thanks so much. great to see you. 752 right now. up next, we have a quick look at the top stories we're following, including bay area hotel workers walking off the job right now. this is a live look at the hilton in san francisco's union square.
