we begin in israel where a general strike is under way this morning, pushing for a ceasefire deal with hamas. the mobilization comes as six more hostages were found dead in gaza, including an israeli-american. hundreds of thousands took -- of israelis took to the streets putting pressure on the netanyahu to compromise. for the latest let's go to claudio lavanga who is following developments. good morning. what do we know about the hostages? >> reporter: good morning, frances. the israeli army says that the bodies of the six hostages were found in a tunnel under rafah and that they were killed right before the israeli soldiers could get to them. well, now they were found literally half a mile or less than half a mile from another tunnel where a hostage was found alive just last week while leading to the assumption that the captors killed them as they felt that the israeli soldiers were closing in on them. well, now as you mentioned among the six dead hostages was also

an israeli-american, hersh goldberg-polin, he was kidnapped on october 7 from that nova music festival, sparking condemnation by the biden administration. now, president biden pledged that the leaders of hamas will pay for this crime while vice president kamala harris called hamas a terrorist organization that now has even more american blood on their hands. as you mentioned, the news of the death of the six hostages, it sparked another massive demonstration on the streets of tel aviv organized by the families of the hostages still being held in gaza. now they say about a half a million people on sunday gathered in the streets of israel to demand once again that a hostage release and ceasefire deal should be reached as soon as possible. now, on that front, president biden and vice president harris are expected today to meet with the u.s. negotiating team to find whether there is a way to

accelerate the process, but the positions from hamas and israel seem to be still very distant with very or no room for compromise, frances. >> claudio, thank you. kremlin officials say ukraine launched waves of drones targeting power plants and a refinery deep inside russia. they say on the ground video obtained by reuters shows the moment when the moscow oil refinery was shelled on sunday. debris from the shoot down still caused major damage. reuters could not independently verify the reports and there was no immediate comment from ukraine. back here in the u.s. we are only 64 days away from a presidential election. vice president harris is spending this labor day visiting swing states. she has stops planned in michigan and wisconsin and will make an appearance with president biden in pennsylvania. donald trump will hold a town hall in that state on wednesday. vice president harris has made

pearsall clutching his chest and walk to go a stretcher after he was shot in broad daylight. san francisco police say the 23-year-old was the victim of an attempted armed robbery saturday just hours after signing autographs at a publicity event. in a facebook post pearsall's mom wrote he was shot in the chest and it exited out his back and missed his vital organs. my son was spared today by the grace of god. the chaos started in bustling union square. he was walking alone when a 17-year-old pulled a gun and tried to rob him. the two struggled and pearsall and the suspect were shot. in the aftermath pearsall was seen on ktv video walking slowly to the ambulance with the help of first responders holding on to him. the 17-year-old suspect is now in police custody. mean while, pearsall has since been released from the hospital. >> we are 49ers. >> reporter: the rookie was on the brink of his nfl debut as

the 49ers first round pick in the spring. he was recovering from hamstring and shoulder injuries during the preseason and said last month he was eager to play. >> i'm up for the job. i'm excited to get started. >> reporter: san francisco's mayor speaking for fans everywhere. >> he has a bright future and i look forward to seeing him recover and get back on the field. >> reporter: it's unclear when he will make his return to running the shield. right now the focus is on his recovery. marissa parra, nbc news. a terrifying scene caught on camera just outside of portland, oregon, a small airplane crashing into a town house a at least three people are dead, the pilot, passenger and one person in the building. investigators have said that the pilot did not make a mayday call before the plane went down. a witness told nbc news he saw the plane veer sharply to the left. the ntsb is moving the plane to a secure facility to investigate the wreckage.

two people are dead after a car plowed into an outdoor restaurant in a minneapolis suburb. it happened in st. louis park around 8:00 last night. police say surveillance video shows the male driver tried to park at the restaurant but then drove into the outside patio area. the driver is under arrest, three others were injured in the incident. this labor day weekend has been packed flights and long lines at airports. the tsa expected at least 70 million passengers to fly through this wednesday but the weekend got off to a rough start thanks to severe weather. there were more than 450 flight cancellations in the u.s. on friday and another 400 over the next two days. crews continue to battle a wildfire burning in jackson, wyoming, which is known as the fish creek fire, it was ignited by a lightning strike over two weeks ago and has burned roughly 13,000 acres. it's burning in a remote area but the heavy smoke is impacting nearby roadways. as of the latest update it is over 40% contained. while some parts of the

country will be dealing with hot conditions, others are in for a soaking. let's turn to nbc meteorologist michelle grossman who has your labor day forecast. good morning, michelle. i guess some of those picnics out there, or cookouts may not happen with the rain. >> we're going to be seeing heavy rain throughout the south and we're looking at continued rain. we saw rain the past couple days, it's a two-part system, we have a front lingering in a spot and also an area of low pressure that's kind of contributing to some of that rain. this is what it looks like, there is the front i was talking about, area of low pressure pumping in that tropical moisture. we do have the chance of storms texas all the way to the carolinas, we have a flash flood threat not only today but the next several days due to rain, could see 2 to 3 inches of rain per hour. we will see airport delays likely in houston, also tampa, could see possible delays also in dallas and new orleans because of rain falling. we will see plenty of rain in portions of texas, the carolinas and state of florida as well. darker colors is where we're expecting the highest amounts of

rain. i-95 florida all the way to the carolinas could see slowdowns on the roadways. this is the rainfall we had throughout tuesday, we are looking at those darker spots seeing the heaviest rain. we will see the rain falling over the next several days n other spots looking at a really nice labor day. feeling like fall in new england along the great lakes, a pleasant day in the rtheast, no storms, some of the rain will be heavy with rain falling 2 to 3 inches per hour. all right. that's your monday forecast. >> thanks so much, michelle. sunday afternoon provided the latest u.s. open stunner in a tournament full of them. >> and that's it.

dispute between directv has resulted in removal of espn and abc from the lineup. it means no jets at the 49ers for week one of monday night football. a real dispute. they're blaming each other. espn is saying directv chose to deny millions of subscribers access to our content, but the other side of it, directv has said blame disney who are maximizing profits at the expense of the consumers. it goes on i'm afraid. elsewhere, as you mentioned, bitcoin atm scams are soaring, especially amongst older victims. apparently according to the ftc, the federal trade commission provided nbc news with data about this. the bitcoin atm scams have gone up nearly tenfold since 2020, topping 110 million u.s. dollars in 2023 and older people, those above 60 years of age apparently

are three times more likely an younger adults to say they've been duped out of cash in these machines as well. the atms look like traditional atms but it's with cryptocurrencies. united kingdom actually banned them but they are of course legal in the united states. frances, back to you. >> something we will watch out for. steve, thank you. now to the big strike throwing a wrench into holiday weekend plans across the country. hotel workers at some of the biggest chains in the world are on the picket lines and even more union members could walk off the job. here is antonia hilton. >> reporter: some 10,000 hotel workers are walking off the job during the busy holiday weekend. from greenwich, connecticut, to boston, san francisco, seattle and each in hawaii. the strike expected to last up to three days in some cases is affecting the hyatt, marriott and hilton chains and workers

organized by union unite here say they're fighting for higher pay, better staffing and reduced work loads after months of stalled negotiations. american hotel chains made major cuts to services and staff during the pandemic but now travel has rebounded but the workers say they are still feeling the squeeze. >> the hotel industry has bounced back from the covid era, right? they're seeing record profits now in 2024. we need some of those profits so that we can actually be back at that standard of living and moving forward. >> reporter: these strikes may be the first of many with the potential for more joining in other major cities in the days ahead. >> how do you think the guests, the travelers will feel this? >> well, in many hotels i think you'll see a limited services, so there may not be daily housekeeping, the pool or the gym or the spa may be closed while the guests are there. >> reporter: we reached out to the chains impacted, only hilton
