we are starting the morning with some patchy clouds and some mist, but then we should start to get more sunshine into the picture by around 10 a.m. temperatures will warm nicely into the upper 60s there by the coast. lots of sunshine. expect a crowd there in pacifica as we have a heat wave on the way that will drive our inland neighbors to the coast. we'll talk about those details coming up. well, speaking of sunshine, on a clear day in northern california, the sun delivers about one and a third kilowatts of energy per
5:17 am
square meter. a lot of people use that, of course, to power their homes. and now there's a california company that wants to use that energy to power your car. a car unlike any other on the road, the aptera solar electric vehicle has just three wheels and looks kind of odd, but the inventor says it's super aerodynamic. you can see the shape of the vehicle behind me. you know, it has a very unique shape and that lets it cut through the air without wasting virtually any energy. most cars, even most modern electric cars, they waste about half of their energy just just pushing the air out of the way. and aptera says that efficiency means the whole thing can be powered by a solar panel, like a pocket calculator fueled by the sun. and by making it solar, we can take that 30 to 40 miles a day that someone normally drives and make it so that they never have to charge it. just being parked in the sun means they never need to plug it in. now, not every day in the
5:18 am
bay area is paradise. sometimes the sun doesn't show up, and that's why the aptera also runs on a battery. so it has a 400 mile battery pack. so you're going to be able to drive 400 miles on a charge like a normal. well like an exceptional electric vehicle. aptera has driven a rocky road. it has tried and failed to build a build a car in the past. this time they say they will be rolling cars out the factory floor early next year, and they have 50,000 orders. wow. that's a very interesting design. i have to say, and other cars use solar panels already. they do. i mean, it's free energy, right? but not to go the distance. toyota prius. the hyundai ioniq, the leaf all use solar panels. mostly it's to add power to the cabin. air conditioning is a huge power draw, so it's for that. i see. interesting well, it's fun. we'll have to see. i'll have to check those out on the road when they. when they
5:19 am
come. thanks, scott. well, side hustles, they're no longer staying on the sidelines. data suggests that more than a third of american adults are relying on earning extra income just to make ends meet, according to instawork, 75% of users say they use side hustles to pay for important essentials like childcare. we also heard from people that they're caring for elderly or ailing parents. those things are also expensive and it's a lot of time. and so i think when you take all of those things into account, people just really need the extra help and making that extra money to make ends meet and maybe put a little bit into savings for a rainy day. well, here are some tips to maximize a side hustle. you should leverage your skills and something you have experience in. set a financial goal. stay local. avoid spending your earned side money on transportation and work with friends. or you could just win it. that would be good to the mega millions jackpot for tomorrow's drawing. $681 million. if you take that as the
5:20 am
cash payout, it's about $336 million. now september, interestingly enough, has been a good month for jackpots. there have been wins every september since 2002. tomorrow's jackpot, the seventh largest in the game's history. not bad. i mean, i would choose the latter if, you know that's what they say to do. yes may you may you have that problem? yes. don't forget about us, ginger. oh definitely not. no, no no absolutely not. oh my goodness. well, it's going to be a nice day to spend some. yeah hard earned side hustle money or maybe stay you know, and catch up on your chores at home. that's fine too. some people need this day to recollect themselves. good morning everybody. we're taking a look over san francisco right now. look at how the fog is kind of at an angle here. i just thought i would share that with you. it looks pretty neat over the city. patchy clouds. but as you start your day, let's go over on into oakland. if you still have to head to work. we
5:21 am
are looking at a little bit of sweater weather to start the morning temperatures in the 60s, and that cloud cover should start to mix out of here as we go on into mid morning. and by lunchtime, as everybody is starting to make those plans, lots of sunshine and temperatures in the mid seconds there for oakland, we're going to do 80s up into the north bay, 81 in novato, 84 in santa rosa. keeping it pretty comfortable around san francisco and the east bay shoreline, some low 70s to go from san francisco to fremont. but then we move on inland and we'll get into some 80s, but not quite as hot. we'll just bump it up a few degrees compared to yesterday, 86 in concord for those plans, as well as in morgan hill. and we'll do 78 in downtown san jose, 79 out in santa cruz. that looks like a lovely beach day. let me explain what's going to happen as we get those temperatures back to summer. i know today is the unofficial end of summer, but those temperatures are saying, no way, cynthia, we are looking at that system of low pressure that brought us the comfortable weekend. it will start to scooch on in here into the pacific

northwest. and as we build the desert here, the desert heat here in the bay area, those temperatures are going to jump. i want you to look at your screen right now. we're going back to school and back to work tomorrow. that means we need to cut back on recess. we need to send the kids off to school with lots of water. everybody please stay hydrated for me. we need to watch for these temperatures soaring into the 90s and one hundreds inland, even by the bay shore 80s from san francisco to 90s. east bay shoreline. lots of people don't have ac, so please find ways to cool yourselves even as we go on into thursday. that heat will continue, but we should get a little bit of a breeze in san francisco to kind of cool things down. but we still remain with those triple digits in concord, down into san martin and gilroy and some toasty 90s as you make your way around the bay, i can offer you a little bit of relief as we go on into the second half of the week, but it will still be pretty warm as we go on into the weekend. san francisco it is going to be some of the hottest days here of the year, as is
5:23 am
typical for september and october, 70s and 80s and we'll cool it back into some low 70s by the weekend. back to you. thanks a lot. cynthia, 80, in san francisco. that's when you know it's going to be hot. yeah, that's too much. we're working to clear the shelters this morning. we want to introduce you to lexi. she's cooling off. she's a few months old, available to adopt at the community center in milpitas over the last three weeks, more than 170 animals have been adopted from the east bay spca. you don't have to adopt to help us clear the shelters campaign. many of our shelters also need volunteers. you can scan the qr code on your screen, take you to a website to find a shelter near you. if

mother, who wrote this on facebook about her son, quote, god shielded him. he was shot in the chest and it exited out his back. thanks be to god. it missed his vital organs. he is in good spirits right now. on saturday, police say pearsall was walking near union square in san francisco when he was approached by a 17 year old boy with a gun. san francisco supervisor aaron peskin tells us it's his. understanding the suspect first tried to snatch a chain off pearsall's neck, then went for his watch. there was a struggle and the gun went off. pearsall was hit in the chest. he was seen walking himself to the ambulance, taken to the hospital and released yesterday. the suspect, who was also shot, ran away but was quickly arrested. he was taken to the hospital and is currently in police custody. yesterday, mayor london breed of san francisco walked through union square to thank police officers and promise to do more to keep shoppers safe, especially on weekends. we have an increased police presence, but in light of the events yesterday, we've

increased it even more so to address some of the concerns that people might have. san francisco police chief bill scott says it does not appear the suspect knew he was targeting a player from the 49ers football team. reporting live, bob redell, back to you. scott. well. 533 on your monday morning in israel, overnight protests, memorials growing after six hostages were found dead in gaza over the weekend. thousands of protesters taking to the streets demanding israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu do more to bring home the rest of the hostages held by hamas, the biggest union in israel is holding a one day general strike to pressure the prime minister to reach a deal, though a court just ordered that strike to end. candlelight memorials, also held in honor of the six hostages, which include israeli american hirsh goldberg-polin, who was born in oakland. the israeli military says their bodies were found in a tunnel under the city of rafah
5:35 am
on saturday, and that they were shot and killed before rescuers could reach them. goldberg-polin was 23 years old, taken hostage from that music festival during the october 7th terror attacks. his parents were prominent advocates for all of the hostages, particularly the eight americans who are thought to be still alive in the gaza strip. you may recall they gave an emotional speech at the democratic national convention just last week. governor gavin newsom, meantime, met with the goldberg-polin family during his visit to israel last year. he released a statement which reads in part, hersh's story and the plight of other hostages was shared with the world through the brave and tireless advocacy of his family. we keep in our prayers and all the victims and loved ones impacted by this heartbreaking tragedy. and scott, more on that bay area native in berkeley last night. hundreds gathered to mourn the life of hersh goldberg-polin and the five other hostages who
5:36 am
israeli defense forces say were killed by hamas. community members say goldberg-polin lived in berkeley in his early years, and that his family attended synagogue at congregation beth israel. some who gathered there to grieve knew him personally. it's just a very sweet kid. he loved going out and getting a beer with his dad. he loved his sisters, loved his mother to death. like just a really. there's no other way to say it. just a very sweet, pure soul. attendees at the synagogue wrote notes of support that will be sent to goldberg, poland's family. now this labor day, gas prices have hit a new low or new lows, i should say. prices are the lowest in three years. in fact, the national average of about or of about $0.50 lower than last year. now, triple a has been taking a closer look at gas prices. it says a less active hurricane season along the gulf coast is helping keep those prices lower. and even
5:37 am
though new data from the energy information administration shows demand rose last week, oil prices have dropped. i think if we're able to get past hurricane season, the next few weeks, the pace of decline will accelerate and it's mainly due to the fact that once we get into the middle of september, we begin that switch to cheaper winter blend gasoline. so that's cheaper to produce, and it's also a lot less expensive. now, when it comes to charging electric vehicles, triple a says the national average is $0.34 per kilowatt at commercial charging stations. and of course, we are tracking where you can fill up for less across the bay area. keep an eye out for that. that's coming up at 608. well, live look at san jose this morning, a labor day. maybe you're headed out to work. it looks like it's going to be another lovely day. cynthia is taking a look at the forecast. it sure is. for people that are kind of taking it easy. this morning, we do look at some lovely going for a walk weather this morning. mostly sunny skies, mild in the mid 60s. and as you make your lunchtime plan,
5:38 am
we'll do a low 70s and lots of sunshine. maybe you're going to take those plans to the beach. stinson, santa cruz, monterey. all looking good for today. but then notice we start to bump up those temperatures. tuesday wednesday and beyond. so if the bay area beaches are warm and toasty, you know that inland it's going to be sizzling. so i'll get you a look at that heat wave coming up in a few minutes. but let's go to the roadways now. it looks like a weekend morning to me. to little no cars passing by the richmond san rafael toll bridge there. and as we take a look over the san mateo bridge, it's also looking pretty clear for drivers, not only with the skies, but on the roadways there too. and the bay bridge toll plaza. usually at this hour we would be watching for those metering lights to come on. i see a few more cars approaching, so i'll check on that. how about going to the tri valley i mentioned? don't disturb them. it's quiet out there and under a 20 minute ride to get yourself from grant line over on into 680. back to you. looking good. all right. thank you. that's what i sound like
