fighters on the scene of a deadly overnight house fire will have the latest on the victim and word of a bittersweet rescue made by firefighters. san francisco leaders promise new action in the wake of the shooting, which seriously injured 49ers rookie ricky pearsall. some encouraging news this morning about his recovery and mourners remembering an oakland born israeli, one of six hostages found dead in gaza over the weekend. we'll show you that outpouring of emotion. this is today in the bay. well, good monday morning. just coming up on 6 a.m. happy labor day. i'm scott mcgrew, and i'm ginger conejero saab. marcus and laura are off this labor day, and we've got a lot to get to today, but we're going to start things off with a look at that forecast because it really has been just glorious. it has been stunning. we're really lucky here to continue that even on into today. after a beautiful weekend. san jose. good morning. we're looking at the two 8017 connector over on into the

hillsides. the beautiful sunrise still awaiting about half an hour to go. some patchy clouds as we take a look over oakland along 80 and into the bay bridge. toll plaza. everything looks clear. let's keep it that way. san rafael up into the north bay. it is a little bit more chilly, but some mostly clear skies as we make our labor day plans. so what will it hold? temperatures will be pretty mild, 70s and 80s, but we do look towards the cierra. if you have plans to go up there to today extend that weekend. there is a fire weather. watch up there, so we'll talk about those details too. the heat is returning as early as tomorrow, so as soon as you step out the door tomorrow, it's going to be drastically different than today. we're talking about 90s and one, hundreds that are going to stick around for a while. so we'll talk about those impacts in a few minutes. back to you. thanks a lot, cynthia. breaking news. just into our newsroom. crews on the scene of a deadly overnight fire in mill valley today in the bay's thom jensen just arrived on the scene. and, tom, can you tell us what you're learning at this point? well,

i'm learning from a gentleman who is on the scene right now who just told me his girlfriend died in this fire. firefighters were called here at 1230 this morning when neighbors reported flames coming from the home. we got information from the fire department here that there was a woman found deceased in a back bedroom in the home, along with one dog. firefighters did rescue three dogs, but this is obviously extremely sad news this morning to hear about the passing of this woman. this is a very difficult area to get to. we're in mill valley in the in the tam hills here above the valley, tam valley and it's a very narrow, windy, steep road that's hard to get in and out of. so i can imagine it was difficult for firefighters to get in here. but about 1230 this morning, they were called here by residents who were frantically calling, saying that this home was in flames. and as i did say, firefighters made entry to the home and found one

woman deceased in a bedroom here, one dog deceased and also rescued three dogs. we'll have more as we get more information from firefighters here on the scene. we're live in mill valley, thom jensen, today in the bay. all right, tom, thank you. well, 602 san francisco 49ers. rookie pearsall recovering at home after he was shot over the weekend. city leaders once again promising to keep people safe in union square. police say an armed robber shot pearsall in the chest saturday afternoon just outside union square. in a facebook post, pearsall's mother says her son was incredibly lucky the gunfire missed the vital organs. police say the 17 year old suspect from tracy was somehow also shot by his own gun. he's in custody. yesterday, mayor london breed walked through union square thanking officers, vowing to do more to keep people safe. since 2021, we've had an increased presence of police officers in the union square area, which is why when this event occurred, the police

responded within a minute they were within the area. so we typically, especially on weekends, we have an increased police presence. but in light of the events yesterday, we've increased it even more. so to address some of the concerns that people might have. police chief bill scott says there are no signs the suspect knew who he was targeting. but of course, that investigation is ongoing. district attorney brooke jenkins expects to file charges this week. our bob redell gathering the latest. he'll be here in the next half hour with a complete report. well, this morning, israel is mourning the following. the discovery of bodies of the bodies of six people held by hamas. thousands of protesters have taken to the streets over the past 24 hours, demanding israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu do more to bring the remaining hostages home. one of those hostages killed was an oakland born man, hirsh goldberg-polin. his parents are expected to bury him. their only son in jerusalem

today. hundreds gathered last night in berkeley to remember his life at the synagogue where he used to attend. here's today in the bay's alyssa goard. i love. when. i the synagogue at congregation beth israel in berkeley was filled to the brim with hundreds crying and praying, they gathered to mourn the six israeli hostages taken by hamas and found dead in gaza. one in particular. many here have a personal connection with hirsh. hirsh goldberg-polin was a 23 year old israeli american. hirsh was born in this community here in berkeley. in this space was where hirsh was named. rabbi jonathan cohen explained that many in the congregation still

have fond memories of hirsh and his parents, who lived there about two decades ago. he was just a very sweet kid. he loved going out and getting a beer with his dad. he loved his sisters, loved his mother to death like just a really. there's no other way to say it. just a very sweet, pure soul. aaron cotler is a lifelong friend of hersh's parents, john and rachel. since hersh's kidnaping at a music festival in israel on october 7th. his arm partly severed by a grenade. his parents have continually pleaded for his release and for the release of all hostages. recently, they made that plea at the democratic national convention. hirsh. hirsh if you can hear us, we love you. stay strong. survive. it's not the way the story was supposed to end. we also want to send them that strength, and we want them to know that their congregation back in berkeley loves them and

is thinking about them. community members lit candles and wrote notes to hersh's family. they wiped away tears and prayed for the hostages still in captivity. there's still 101 bodies and souls that are stuck in those tunnels, and they're innocent civilians, palestinian civilians that are being killed every day. it's all terrible. and we all want that to end. alyssa goard today in the bay meanwhile, it continues to be an agonizing waiting game for those who are still being held by hamas following the news of the recent killings, only four americans are still believed to be in captivity. the family of one of them, israeli american soldier omer neutra, is speaking out on today. he says news of goldberg poland's death is devastating. omer and hersh are almost the same age. we didn't know the goldberg poland's before this, but we were thinking our sons probably knew each other. and rachel and john have been such a beacon of

hope even for us. you know, the american, the families of american citizens. and to have this happen now, it shouldn't have happened. the president's national security adviser tells the families of those americans still in captivity. the coming days will be critical in the effort to bring their loved ones home. and south bay congressman ro khanna made an appearance on sunday's meet the press hosted host christian walker asked him about the washington post report that says vice president kamala harris will conduct a full review of u.s. israeli policy and may be open to imposing conditions on some aid to israel. have you been pushing her directly to support conditioned aid to israel? i've been pushing her to support the enforcement of u.s. law. that is what the enforcement of the leahy law and our security laws require, that we don't have unconditional aid and christian. this isn't unprecedented. in

1982, after the sabra and shatila massacres in lebanon, president reagan called up menachem begin in israel and said, we will not give aid in a way that's going to cause humanitarian crises. so we need to have pressure on both sides to end the war. and i'm glad the vice president is open to a new direction also developing in the israeli occupied territories. the beginning of an hours long pause in fighting. this is part of an effort by the world health organization to vaccinate 640,000 children against polio in a three day effort. there's fear polio could spread undetected in gaza after tests on wastewater samples turned positive for the virus. happening tomorrow, oakland mayor sheng thao will announce a deal to sell the city's portion of the coliseum to an entertainment group. the african american sports entertainment group has agreed to pay the city $105 million as part of a major redevelopment plan for the coliseum. the money will help the mayor close the city's

budget deficit. if it hadn't been signed by today, the city would have been forced to make cuts. the group already closed a deal with the a's for a stake in the coliseum. all right, 609 for you on this labor day monday, let's take a live look at walnut creek, where it really has just been so beautiful across the bay area. cinthia pimentel is in for us today with what you can expect for people who are taking the day off, getting their day morning, getting their day started early. we've got temperatures for everybody that's doing all sorts of things on this labor day monday. some people have to go to work. so let's check out pleasant hill. you need a light layer. this morning we are looking at some patchy clouds drifting around, but it's not too bad. as we go on into midmorning, it gets a little bit more mild. you can push it aside and as we go on into the afternoon temperatures climbing into the low 80s there in the east bay, with lots of sunshine to kind of wind down later on on this labor day monday, it's going to be pretty comfortable. we're talking 80s up into the north bay a few degrees warmer as we go on into

in in saratoga. good morning. a light layer to get your walk started or going for that coffee this morning. temperatures will warm up nicely though as we go on into lunchtime into the 70s and we'll briefly hit 80 degrees. now there is even hotter temperatures on the board for the south bay, and really bay area wide, including our coast. we'll talk about the heat wave that starts tomorrow. coming up. all right. you see all that sun in saratoga on a clear day in northern california? that sun delivers around one and a third kilowatts of energy per square meter. a lot of people use that energy to power their homes through solar. and now there's a california company that wants to use that energy to power a car. a car

unlike any other on the road. the aptera solar electric vehicle has just three wheels and looks kind of odd, but the inventor says it's super aerodynamic. you can see the shape of the vehicle behind me. you know, it has a very unique shape and that lets it cut through the air without wasting virtually any energy. most cars, even most modern electric cars, they waste about half of their energy just just pushing the air out of the way. and aptera says that efficiency means the whole thing can be powered by a solar panel, like a pocket calculator fueled by the sun. and by making it solar, we can take that 30 to 40 miles a day that someone normally drives and make it so that they never have to charge it. just being parked in the sun means they never need to plug it in. now, not every day in the bay area is paradise. sometimes the sun doesn't show up, and that's why the aptera also runs

monday. costco is costing you more. the price of an annual membership increase for the first time in seven years. now, prices are up between 5 and $10, depending on each customer's membership level. the increases were announced in july and were expected to impact 52 million members, mostly those in the executive level. directv viewers are waking up in the middle of a carriage dispute. the tv provider last night pulled disney channel's several hours after an agreement expired. among the stations now blacked out, abc owned and operated stations, including espn networks and the disney channel. the outage impacts about 11 million customers. side hustles are no longer on the sidelines. data suggests more than a third of american adults are relying on earning extra income to make ends meet. according to instawork, 75% of users say they use side hustles to pay for

important essentials like childcare. we also heard from people that they're caring for elderly or ailing parents. those things are also expensive and it's a lot of time. and so i think when you take all of those things into account, people just really need the extra help and making that extra money to make ends meet and maybe put a little bit into savings for a rainy day. well, if you are looking to create a side hustle for yourself here are some tips to maximize one. leverage skills in something that you have experience in. set a financial goal and stay local so you can avoid spending earned side money on transportation. and last but not least, you can work with friends like we're doing here, right? exactly. this is really the side hustle on a labor day monday. absolutely because the other hustle is at home with, you know, all of your responsibilities and walking the dogs and dinner. oh, my. and that one doesn't pay? yeah. the main one doesn't pay. all right, well, what is it going to be like if you are walking the dogs

or getting the kids out who might not have school? get them out to the park early. get them tired. yeah. we are looking at a pretty nice start to our day and really, as we go on through the rest of this week, we're going to be wishing we had these temperatures. it's going to get pretty warm up in here. we're getting the party started though, with a sweater weather kind of morning up in santa rosa, 49 degrees, but mostly clear skies. stunning sunrise over san jose and dublin in the upper 50s and 60s, and san francisco too. we have some good visibility looking at mount tam way there in the distance. let's talk about what's happening and what happened this weekend. we had a pretty mild weekend saying goodbye to august. hello to september. that system of low pressure brought us those breezy winds, but for now it is going to start to scooch on up into the pacific northwest and beyond and bring in some of that desert heat. now, the high pressure system spins differently as we look at that big ole h there. it's going to bring at times

some offshore winds. so when we hear that, especially at our driest points of the year we think of fire danger. so that's going to come into the picture as well. we take a look at our heat risk for today. notice most of it staying in that yellow color. minor because those temperatures are going to stay pretty mild. vacaville and fairfield at 8780s up into the north bay as well through novato, 70 through san francisco and the bay shore 77 in hayward, we'll do 78 downtown san jose and 87 for you in san martin. so very minor heat for today. pretty mild labor day monday. but notice how those contours change as early as tomorrow. so we've got to take today the day off to prepare for the heat wave that really lasts. the entire week. we see some triple digit temperatures starting in through parts of solano county, eastern coco gauff tomorrow. and then on wednesday that heat continues and we get into some areas of that red here, which could be that major heat risk. we got to think about people that work outside the kids at recess time and also sending them off to school. maybe avoiding those

sweaters and giving them a lot of water. and of course, checking in on our friends and neighbors, especially our neighbors in the hillsides that could be looking at the possibility of that fire danger. the beaches are going to be pretty popular not only today, but through the rest of the wee. really, some people might extend that labor day holiday to try and beat the heat. temperatures spike there on wednesday into the upper 70s, and then we start to see a little bit of a cool off into the second half of the week and the weekend. notice that huge spike in temperatures from today to tomorrow. those upper 90s and one hundreds remain through at least thursday. a little bit of that breeze will return into the weekend, but still pretty toasty in the 90s and upper 80s san francisco. find a place that has an ac. we're going to see some very warm temperatures there for city standards into the 80s for tomorrow. back to you. thanks a lot, cynthia. well, we're working to clear the shelters this morning. we want to introduce you to lexi. she is a few months old, available to adopt at the animal community center in milpitas over the last

32% of students were behind grade level last year. now, a group of teachers are looking to help close that gap as kids head back to school. now, as students return to the classroom, the ceo of teach for america says there are three big challenges facing students and teachers this school year. it includes chronic absenteeism, learning, recovery, and mental health and wellness. according to the organization, those challenges are all connected. the latest federal stats show only 9% of public schools strongly agree that they can effectively provide mental health services to all students in need. we need to ensure that we are creating the conditions and context where kids feel a sense of belonging and connection, where they know that it matters if they show up or don't, that their peers are going to notice. the adults are going to notice where they are able to really do their best work and learn, and where we are

so forecaster cinthia pimentel is ready to give us our hot forecast. we are. that's tomorrow. scott. all right. getting too ahead of yourself this morning. people are still trying to enjoy the labor day monday. it is a gorgeous start in san francisco as we take a mostly clear look there through the city and out towards the marin headlands. it will be a stunning day. there in the city. will reach 70 degrees downtown and enjoy lots of sunshine. now get ready as scott was saying that he is on the way as soon as tomorrow. we're talking 80s by the bay, including san francisco, 90 to 100 inland. so that means that we've got to start preparing for the potential of fire danger and the impact to our health as well. we're going to see those overnight temperatures also going up. so that means very little rest for some people who can't deal with those temperatures. i'll walk you through the extended forecast coming up in a few minutes. back to you. thanks a lot, cynthia. well, we continue to follow breaking news in mill valley. a woman and a dog were killed in

an overnight fire today in the bay's. thom jensen is live on the scene. and, tom, you're now learning more about the victim. we are. good morning to both of you. we're actually we've moved from the scene. we're at a south marin fire station a couple of miles away from the fire scene itself. the reason we moved is because, frankly, a person who was at the house who identified himself as the boyfriend of the woman who died, told us that he didn't want us there. and so we moved down here. but at any rate, firefighters were called to this house on alta vista, 700 block of alta vista road in mill valley at about 1230, in the morning when neighbors called 911 reporting flames coming from the home. when firefighters got to the scene, they did understand that there was a person trapped in a back bedroom, but unfortunately when they got to the bedroom, they found a deceased woman. they haven't given the woman's age or name at this point, but they

found her and a deceased dog. they also rescued three other dogs from the home. but sad news on this labor day, as people wake up and find out that that their neighbor here died in this fatal house fire in mill valley, marin county task force fire officials are investigating this, and we hope to get more details on what happened at this point, they have no details for us on how it happened, what caused it. but we do know that one person died along with one dog in this fatal house fire this morning in mill valley. we're live in mill valley. thom jensen today in the bay. all right, tom, i know you'll get back to us. it is 632. this morning. so later this week, the san francisco district attorney will file charges against the teen accused of shooting a 49ers rookie in union square today in the bay's. bob redell joins us from the newsroom. and bob, there's some silver lining here. ricky pearsall is already back home after he was shot in the chest. that is remarkable news,

isn't it? good morning to ginger and scott. yes 49ers rookie ricky pearsall is extremely lucky to be alive. that, according to his mother, who wrote this on facebook about her son, quote, god shielded him. he was shot in the chest and exited out his back. thanks be to god, it missed his vital organs. he is in good spirits right now. on saturday, police say pearsall was walking near union square in san francisco when he was approached by a 17 year old boy with a gun. san francisco supervisor aaron peskin tells us it's his understanding the suspect first tried to snatch a chain off pearsall's neck, then went for his watch. there was a struggle, and the gun went off. pearsall was hit in the chest. he was seen walking himself to the ambulance, taken to the hospital and again released yesterday. the suspect, who was also shot, ran away but was quickly arrested. he was taken to the hospital and is currently in police custody again awaiting charges. yesterday, mayor london breed she walked through union

square to thank police officers and promised to do more to keep shoppers safe, especially on weekends. we have an increased police presence, but in light of the events yesterday, we've increased it even more so to address some of the concerns that people might have, san francisco police chief bill scott says it does not appear the suspect knew he was targeting a player from the 49ers football team. reporting live, bob redell today in the bay. scott. all right, bob, thank you. well, we do have more details on the pearsall shooting. the neighborhood business and investment agency, the union square alliance, issued a response following the shooting over the weekend. the group says it is saddened by the violence. this is not the place to do criminal activity like that. you will get apprehended. there are police everywhere in the district, and it's just so unfortunate. you know, it is certainly a setback to the heart of our city. this is where we all come to celebrate life's

greatest moments. we deserve to have a robust and bustling downtown center core. now, the alliance says union square is on an upswing. and despite the shooting, the area is still seeing large crowds. well, san francisco police sergeant is talking about her actions, which may have helped save peirsol's life. sergeant joel harrell tells the chronicle she was about a block away when she heard gunfire. she says she ran to the scene and found pearsall bleeding from the head and chest. harrell says she quickly applied pressure to his wounds to stop the bleeding until an ambulance arrived. the items she used. pearsall shirt and her officer's baseball cap. it is 636 this morning. thousands of hotel workers on strike in the bay area and around the country. union leaders say nearly 2100 bay area workers launched a three day strike yesterday morning. this comes after months of failed contract negotiations.

the hotels affected are in san francisco, san mateo and san jose. here's one worker explaining what the group is asking for. we're going to do whatever it takes for us to have a better contract, better wages, better work conditions. we reached out to the hotels involved, but only hilton got back to us. a spokesperson says the company is, quote, committed to negotiating in good faith and that contingency plans are in place to ensure a smooth stay for customers this labor day. gas prices have hit new lows. prices are the lowest in three years. in fact, the national average is about $0.50 lower than it was last year. triple a has been taking a closer look at gas prices. it says a less active hurricane season along the gulf coast is helping keep those prices lower. and even though new data from the energy information administration shows demand rose last week, oil prices have dropped. i think if we're able to get past hurricane season the next few weeks, the

capital of kyiv this morning. ukraine's air defense system managed to intercept a large portion of the barrage, but at this point, at least three people are injured. now there are also reports of shrapnel sparking fires and damaging homes. the bombardment was timed with the return to school for many children, and it follows an airstrike by ukraine on russian soil that included targets in moscow. now back here in the bay area, we are learning new details about another shooting on 580. it happened around two saturday afternoon in the eastbound lanes near seminary avenue in oakland. now, police say a man and a woman were shot. they drove themselves to the hospital. the man was treated for a gunshot wound in his stomach. the woman who was shot in the head was taken to a trauma center. there's no word on how they're doing or what led up to the shooting. so far, no arrests have been made. 643 turning to the race for the white house, young voters could have a major impact on the election if they vote today. in

lunchtime, we see some mild mid 70s in the north bay out towards the east bay and the south bay as well. we're going to keep it nice and breezy, but overall comfortable through the san francisco city and the peninsula and the east bay shoreline into the afternoon. just a touch warmer than yesterday. but this weekend stretching on into today. pretty lucky with these numbers as we take a look at our highs of 83 in santa rosa, 85 out in fairfield will do 74 in fremont, 69 in san mateo. our beaches also looking pretty comfortable. mid 60s in half moon to bay upper 70s in santa cruz. notice they're hotter days ahead. we are looking at that heat returning as we go on into tomorrow, wednesday, thursday, possibly friday. so it's a long stretch of time. hang with me as we see these temperatures just climb as early as tomorrow. so as you step out the door tomorrow, it's kind of going to hit you in the face as we go on. but you're going to be prepared with these temperatures and telling everybody you know, to stay cool. we're looking at 101 in concord, 100 in ukiah, 99 in

san martin and gilroy, and those 80s and 90s continue for the bay shore. this is really our hottest month in the bay area. so is october. but then by the end of it, we get the rain. remember, by halloween. so this is pretty rare to see the temperatures just jumping like this for the east bay shoreline. and it continues on into wednesday, so might need to cut back recess a little bit. give the kids a lot of water breaks yourself as well. if you work outside, and also remembering your pets and everybody around you. we go to 105 in fairfield on wednesday and those 100 continue as we go on into thursday. but i could offer you a little bit of good news. we start to get a little bit of that sea breeze returning by thursday and friday, which could help cool down the bay shore just a little bit. so remember to drink water even if you're not thirsty. we want to avoid any heat strokes and things like that. taking the break in the shade and remembering your pets and their livestock. they don't talk. so what i'm doing for my dogs is i'm cooling them down, turning the ac on a little bit and giving them those frozen water bowls so that they can

cool down and be entertained for a little bit. check your cars for your kids and your pets and anything that you want to keep safe and exercise early. walk the dogs and walk yourself early as you, or maybe later as we tend to see the coolest times in the morning and at night. overall, the next couple of days just downright hot from today to tomorrow. look at that. that jump there in the temperature is going to be significant. and that will continue through the week, bringing along, of course, fire danger as those hillsides are dry. i mentioned that the breeze could return here into the weekend, but still pretty toasty as you move on inland san francisco. very rare numbers there for the city. so if you don't have ac, maybe going into a cooling center will be a good idea by the weekend. we bring down those numbers back into the low 70s to the roadways. now let's see quickly what's going on. we do have some clear roads through the bay bridge toll plaza. if we can bring up those cameras, maybe we'll save them for the next hit. how about that? give people to come back. back to you guys. all right. we'll check back in. well, happening now, state leaders are

mill valley. investigators tell our photographer at the scene it started at 1230 this morning on alta vista road in the hills of tam valley. three dogs were rescued from the home, but the woman was found dead in a bedroom. no word on what sparked that fire. san francisco 49ers rookie ricky pearsall is recovering at home after he was shot over the weekend. city leaders are once again promising to keep people safe at union square and that's where police say an armed robber shot pearsall in the chest saturday afternoon. in a facebook post, pearsall's mother says her son was incredibly lucky. the gunfire missed his vital organs. police say the 17 year old suspect from tracy was also somehow shot by the same gun. he is now in custody. yesterday, mayor london breed walked through union square thanking officers, vowing to do more to keep people safe. since 2021, we've had an increased presence of police officers in the union

square area, which is why when this event occurred, the police responded within a minute they were within the area. so we typically, especially on weekends, we have an increased police presence. but in light of the events yesterday, we've increased it even more. so to address some of the concerns that people might have. the investigation is ongoing, and district attorney brooke jenkins expects to file charges this week. in israel, overnight protests and memorials are growing. this morning after six hostages were found dead in gaza. thousands of protesters are taking to the streets demanding israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu do more to bring home the rest of the hostages held by hamas. the biggest union in israel is holding a one day general strike to pressure netanyahu to reach a deal, though a court has ordered the strike to end. candlelight memorials are also being held in honor of the six hostages, which include israeli, american hersh

goldberg-polin, who was born in oakland. the israeli military says their bodies were found in a tunnel under the city of rafah on saturday, and that they were shot and killed before they could reach them. goldberg-polin was 23 years old and was taken hostage from a music festival that happened during the october 7th hamas terror attacks. his parents were prominent advocates for all of the hostages, particularly the eight americans who were still thought to be alive in the gaza strip. governor gavin newsom met with the goldberg-polin family during his visit to israel last year. he released a statement which reads in part, hersh's story and the plight of other hostages was shared with the world through the brave and tireless advocacy of his family. we keep in our prayers all the victims and loved ones impacted by this heartbreaking tragedy. tomorrow, oakland mayor will announce a deal to sell the city's portion of the coliseum. the african
