compared to last year, according to aaa. so if you are returning home from your labor day weekend plans, one thing i know for sure, you are going to be in good company. as people try to take advantage of the last days of summer vacation, record numbers of travelers causing lots of extra traffic and delays on highways and at airports. >> our flight is delayed at lovefield by, like, literally two hours. >> been in this uber for over an hour. we're just trying to go two miles away. send help. >> reporter: for the 17 million flying, severe weather in some areas delayed the start of the weekend's travel, canceling hundreds of flights in major hubs like new york and chicago and passengers across the country seeing more than 15,000 delays over the weekend alone. strong storms also delaying the penn state/west virginia football game on saturday. >> oh! >> and look at that. look at how they're looking at that lightning. they're like, uh-oh.

>> reporter: meanwhile, while many travelers' labor day plans were in full swing, on sunday, more than 10,000 hotel workers nationwide went on strike at hilton, hyatt and marriott chains. they're asking for better working conditions and pay. >> we're here to get better benefits, better pensions so i could retire, hopefully soon. >> reporter: some of the affected hotels plan to remain open, but say some of their services may be affected by the strike. there is a silver lining for those driving this weekend. gas prices are down. the average price for a gallon on sunday was $3.33, almost 50 cents less than last year. and if you are planning on driving home from your labor day weekend plans today, the best time to do it would be before 10:00 a.m. but if you are planning on hitting the road tomorrow, it is actually best to hit the record after 1:00 p.m. laura? >> all right. priya, thank you.

all right. let's get your forecast. dylan is in for al this morning. first check of the labor day weather. a lot of stuff on that map that doesn't look good for people trying to get home. >> especially down through texas, where we've had rain all weekend long. there is a disturbance out of the gulf of mexico. it is producing all of that tropical-like moisture. so we have heavier downpours for parts of central texas. right along the coast, near corpus christi, heavier downpours. a stalled front from the carolines to georgia, that will be an area we'll see pop-up showers and storms. here is that area of low pressure. here is the stalled front. and combined, that could increase the flood threat. houston has a chance of seeing airport delays. new orleans, basically all your airports down through florida too, and then, again, up into atlanta and charlotte, where we could see areas of delays. if you are traveling, i20 would be one of the worst roads to

labor day. i'm ginger conejero saab. here's a look at our top stories. san francisco 49ers rookie ricky pearsall is recovering at home after he was shot over the weekend, and city leaders are once again promising to keep people safe in union square. that is where police say an armed robber shot pearsall in the chest saturday afternoon. in a facebook post, pursell's mother says her son was incredibly lucky the gunfire missed his vital organs. police say the 17 year old suspect from tracee was also somehow shot by the same gun. he is now in custody. yesterday mayor london breed walked through union square thanking officers, vowing to do more to keep people safe. since 2021, we've had an increased presence of police officers in the union square area, which is why when this event occurred, the police responded within a minute they were within the area. so we typically especially on weekends, we have an increased police presence. but in light of the events yesterday, we've

ambulance. his mother writing on social media, the bullet exited out his back and missed his vital organs. my son was spared today by the grace of god. responding officers helped keep pearsall calm after the shooting, even praying together at one point and telling him, be strong, like you're on the field. according to the san francisco chronicle. >> although the suspect is in custody, this still is an active investigation. >> reporter: police say a struggle ensued with multiple shots fired. the suspect, a 17-year-old male is in stable condition after authorities say he was shot by his own gun in the scuffle. investigators believe the teen acted alone and was not targeting pearsall because he's a professional athlete. the wide receiver was named the niners first-round draft pick with hopes to make his nfl debut next week. hours before the shooting, pearsall was seen signing

autographs for fans. he was listed in stable condition. the team announced he had been released from the hospital and continues to recover. the shooting putting public safety in san francisco back in the spotlight. according to police, violent crime, property crime and gun violence are all down so far this year. but for some, those stats don't tell the full story. >> the numbers might be showing something different, but we can only speak from our own experiences. >> reporter: now the district attorney is promising to hold the teen suspect accountable, as pearsall's family and fans are grateful a fatal tragedy was avoided by mere inches. >> and, morgan, this shooting happened obviously in the middle of the afternoon. so many witnesses and officers nearby. so what happens next in this investigation? >> investigators are combing through security videos to understand how this could have happened, given it was a busy day on the weekend, something the mayor has also pointed out here. extra police have since been

reunion tour, and spending fans into a frenzy. concert ticket sales hit a sour note. leaving some fans looking for their own oasis. >> i've been in the line now for an hour and a half. there is still 14,000 people ahead of me. >> reporter: many claiming extensive waits, glitches and sky-high pricing for the concerts in the uk and ireland next year. dan walker posting on x, there has got to be a fairer, simpler, more efficient way of selling tickets. ticketmaster uk says they don't set ticket prices. promoters do. oasis can only be sold at face value, and tickets at other sites are either counterfeit or will be cancelled by the promoters. but for millions of fans, the frustration seemed familiar.

good morning everyone. it is 856. i'm scott mcgrew. we continue to follow breaking news. a woman and a dog died following a fire in a home in mill valley. investigators tell our photographer this started around 1230. this morning along alta vista road. that's in the hills of the tam valley. three dogs were rescued from the home. the woman found dead in a bedroom. no word yet on what sparked that fire. happening now. thousands of hotel workers are on strike in the bay area and around the country. it comes after months of failed contract negotiations. the hotels affected are in san francisco, san mateo and san jose. we're following it all, including hilton's response. you can see a full report coming up at 11. we'll see you on our ddaymi
