good morning, glad you're with me. i'm frances rivera. democrat spent labor day showing support for organized labor. president biden and vice president harris made a rare joint campaign appearance overnight in pittsburgh. they were hoping to win over blue collar workers in critical rust belt states. brie jackson joins us now. good morning. pittsburgh is known as steel city. so what did the president and vice president have to say to the steelworkers there? >> reporter: so vice president kamala harris came out against a controversial deal, announcing her opposition to the sale of u.s. steel, which is one of the leading american steel companies, to nippon steel of japan. she and president biden say they oppose this deal on economic and national security grounds, but it is unclear what actions they might take to block it. this event with president biden wrapped up a busy labor day weekend for the democratic ticket. the vice president visited michigan before pennsylvania,

while her running mate made stops in minnesota and wisconsin. >> kamala believes as i do. the unions are the spine of this economy! she'll be historic pro-union president. >> they said tim is in the pocket of organized labor. i said, that's a damn lie. i am the pocket. if you want to attack me for standing up for collective bargaining, for fair wages, for safe working conditions, for health care and retirement, you roll the damn dice. i'll take my chances on that. >> reporter: and former president trump was absent from the campaign trail on labor day. but he did post on social media, wishing a happy labor day to american workers. and he also criticized the economic policies of the biden administration. mr. trump also promoted a town hall that he'll be doing in pennsylvania tomorrow night. frances? >> brie jackson for us, thanks.

israeli-american israeli-am lynn wahlberg was buried in jerusalem just days after being murdered in captivity by hamas in gaza. thousands attended the funeral. his heart broken parents had been tireless advocates for their son and other hostages. they now hope for a resolution to the crisis. >> maybe, just maybe your death is the fuel that will bring home the remaining 101 hostages. >> after the death of goldberg-polin and five other hostages, large-scale protests erupted across israel, demanding a cease-fire deal with hamas. prime minister netanyahu remains defiant, saying he will not budge on the issue. two people briefed on discussions tell nbc news that president biden may offer a final take it or leave it deal to both hamas and israel as

early as this week. u.s. officials say two u.s. marines are now safe after they were assaulted in turkey monday. the attack caught on camera shows the man placing what appears to be a bag over the head of one of the service members. according to a navy commander, the marine who is on routine deployment with the wasp amphibious group was in the city when the assault took place. at least 15 assailants have been detain detained. the u.s. embassy in turkey thanked authorities for their swift response and ongoing investigation. we are learning new details about the horrific shooting on a chicago commuter train. four people are dead and a suspect is in custody. police say the four victims were not sitting together, and they appeared to be sleeping as the attacks adrienne broaddus has more.

>> reporter: police are investig investigating a mass shooting aboard a commuter train in what authorities believe may have been a random attack. >> appears to be three individuals unresponsive on the same rail car. >> reporter: police say the suspect shot four people in two separate cars. three victims pronounced dead on scene. one later died at a local hospital. the suspect initially able to get away. >> slender black male, wearing green pants and black shirt. >> reporter: police say the suspect was later located on another train line, tracked down with the help of surveillance video. >> we have somebody in custody. a weapon was recovered. there's no immediate threat. >> reporter: this woman says her brother may have been on board. >> i just hopped out of the bed and rushed up there. i was just trying to figure out is everything okay. >> reporter: police now trying to determine a motive. >> this, obviously, is shocking. it is uncommon to have a mass shooting like this, especially this close to home. so, for people to feel unsafe, you know, it's justified.

the team announced he had been released from the hospital and continues to recover. >> this was a terrible and rare incident in union square. >> reporter: the shooting putting public safety in san francisco back in the spotlight. >> this kind of violence is simply run acceptable in our city. >> reporter: as police boost patrols the suspect remains in custody. the district attorney says the decision to charge the 17-year-old as a minor or adult should be made in the next 36 hours. >> and our thanks to morgan for that report. many hotel employees spent labor day demanding better working conditions. about 10,000 housekeepers, cooks and staffers hitting the pickett lines in cities across the u.s., asking for better pay, health care and reduced workloads. they say the industry has rebounded since 2020, but their wages have not. the strikes center around marriott, hilton and hyatt hotel chains and could expand to other cities.

pope francis is visiting indonesia this. >>morning. his 11-day jaunt will be the longest overseas trip of his papacy. what's on the agenda for the pope's trip? >> reporter: good morning, frances. this is, without a doubt, the longest and most-demanding trip pope francis has ever taken over the next week, two weeks, he's going to be visiting indonesia where he landed this morning, then east timor and papua, new guinea and singapore for a total of 20,000 miles. that would be challenging for anyone, let's alone an 87-yeard man who has had trouble walking without a cane or more recently a wheelchair. he had a few other issues like frequent lung infections that

forced him to take frequent breaks. on the flight from rome to jakarta, he looked like he was in good spirits and good health and managed to walk through the aisle to the back of the plane, greeting the journalists traveling with him as he does usually, and he told them that he was happy to be on this trip. now during the visit to asia, he will address a number of issues that are dearest to his heart and highest on his agenda, like interfaith dialog, climate change. today is a rest day. nothing scheduled because of the long flight. but from tomorrow he will kick start his busy schedule in jakarta where he's expected to walk through the tunnel of friendship that collects the mosque there with the catholic cathedral. that is a symbol of interfaith dialog. >> i'm sure a lot of down time woven in that itinerary. thank you. watch out for rain if you are headed back to work after the long weekend. let's check in with angie lassman who's tracking the
