good morning. good to be with you. i'm frances rivera. we begin with that horrific shooting on a chicago commuter train. four people are dead and a suspect is in custody. police say the victims were not seating together, and they appeared to be sleeping as the attack unfolded. adrienne broaddus has more. >> reporter: police are investigating a mass shooting in forest park, illinois, just outside chicago. aboard a commuter train in what may have been a random attack. >> three individuals are unresponsive. >> reporter: police say the suspect shot four people in two separate cars. three victims pronounced dead on scene. one later died at a local hospital. the suspect initially able to get away. >> slender, black male, wearing green pants and black shirt. >> reporter: police say the suspect was later located on another train line, tracked down with the help of surveillance video.

>> we have somebody in custody. a weapon was recovered. there's no immediate threat. >> reporter: this woman says her brother may have been on board. >> i just hopped out of the bed and rushed up here. i'm just trying to figure out is everything okay. >> reporter: police now trying to determine a motive. >> this is obviously shocking. it is uncommon to have a mass shooting like this, especially this close to home. so, you know, for people to feel unsafe, you know, it's justified. >> reporter: in a statement, chicago transit authority calling this an isolated incident and saying that this heinous and egregious act of violence should never have occurred. forest park's mayor grieving the killings. >> it's a horrible tragedy that four people are dead on labor day weekend. >> reporter: and this particular line runs 24/7 from chicago o'hare international to downtown chicago. the mayor here in forest park is asking for additional resources to help handle public safety. back to you. >> adrianne, thank you.

the american government has seized a plane used by nicolas maduro, the president of venezuela. officials cite violations of sanctions and export control laws. they say the plane was illegally bought through a shell company for $13 million and smuggled out of the u.s. the plane was seized in the dominican republic and transferred to florida. the venezuelan government press office did not respond to the associated press' request for comment. u.s. officials say two u.s. marines are now safe after they were assaulted in turkey monday. the attack caught on camera shows a man placing a bag over the head of one of the service members. according to a navy commander, the marines yuunit is on routin deployment with the wasp and ready nece readiness group. at least 15 assail yaants have n detained. the u.s. embassy in turkey thanked authorities for their

swift response and the ongoing investigation. israeli-american hersh goldberg-polin was buried in jerusalem days after being murdered in captivity by hamas in gaza. thousands attended the funeral. his heartbroken parents, who had been tireless advocates of their son and other hostages say they now hope for a resolution to the crisis. >> maybe, just maybe your death is the fuel that will bring home the remaining 101 hostages. >> after the death of goldberg-polin and five other hostages, large-scale protests erupted across israel, demanding a cease-fire deal with hamas. but prime minister benjamin netanyahu remains defiant, saying he will not budge on the key issue of continued israeli control over gaza's border with egypt. two people briefed on discussions tell nbc news that president biden may offer a final take it or leave it deal to both hamas and israel as

anymore. >> the strikes center around hyatt, marriott and hilton hotel chains. they could expand to more cities as the negotiations continue. pope francis is in indonesia this morning, arriving in jakarta just a few hours ago. he will also travel to papua, new guinea and singapore. the 11-day jaunt will be the longest foreign trip of his papacy. let's go to claudio lavanga. what's on the agenda for the pope's trip? >> reporter: there's no doubt this will be the longest and most demanding trip pope francis has ever undertaken, as you mentioned, over the next two weeks. a bit less than that. he will visit indonesia where he landed early this morning, papua, knew new guinea and sing. a little over 20,000 miles. that would be a challenging trip for anyone, let alone an 87-year-old man who's been

having problems walking without the help of a cane, and more recently, with the help of a wheelchair. and who had also other issues, health issues like frequent lung infections. but, on the plane from rome to jakarta overnight, he looked like he was in good spirits. he managed to walk through the aisle at the back of the plane to greet the journalists traveling with him as' he does traditionally. he said he was happy to be on that trip. he will concentrate on a series of issues that are dear to his heart and high on his agenda, like interfaith dialog and of course climate change. today is a day of rest because of the long trip. but, from tomorrow, his schedule will start with his visit in jakarta. where the highlight will be his passing through the tunnel of friendship that connects the city's mosque with the catholic cathedral. that is a symbol of interfaith dialog.
