hi their house? i think they're renting. listen, listen— i know they get easy access to all this football... but you know what you got? what, coach? a crumb bum attitude! now drop and give me twenty! twenty what?
5:01 am
for a cease fire and a hostage deal with hamas. we're live in washington with new pressure from the white house. plus, we worked as a team that day. all of us came together. they responded to my call for help. i'll never forget that. it means so much to me. a san francisco police sergeant praised for her urgent actions to help save san francisco. 49ers ricky pearsall after a shooting near union square. in her own words, her heartfelt reassurances to him in the frantic moments following the gunfire. and get the warm up. here's a live look outside. we are tracking a heat wave on the horizon. this is today in the bay and good tuesday morning. i'm ginger conejero saab. i'm in for marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike in just a little bit. carey is also out today, but forecaster cinthia pimentel is here with a look at how hot it's going to get. we're going to enjoy the morning right
5:02 am
now because it could be one of the coolest parts of the rest of the week. actually, we are starting off a bit cooler up into the north bay, 51 degrees 61 in san jose. so we start to get some microclimates in the picture, nice and clear through the golden gate bridge. mid 50s and we are busy once again out through dublin. it will be warming very quickly as we go throughout our mid-morning, so if you have to get any of those walks with the dogs, you want to get them in now by noon. look at that. temperatures already climbing into the upper 80s for the east bay, the north bay and the south bay nearly those 90 degrees out in livermore already. and the city will actually be warming up too. so a pretty rare thing to be talking about 80s in san francisco, but september is usually one of our warmest months in the bay area. we get even hotter from there into 91 in fremont, 99 in concord could get to that triple digit mark, so it will be a very toasty tuesday around the bay area. i've got a lot of things to help you prepare for this heat wave ahead. but mike, you're hearing about a fire
5:03 am
along the nimitz. yeah. so concerned. of course, anytime we hear fire, especially with the temperatures we're looking at and maybe some wind kicking in as well. this is a roadside fire, though, along the nimitz didn't see any problem as far as the flow of traffic past high street. that's where it was reported along the nimitz. the speed sensors also show no problems. if i can move the sensors over there for my maps. there we go. right here in this corridor. that's the nimitz right by. you can kind of see the oracle arena there, a smooth flow of traffic around the rest of the bay does show up. an incident is reported here getting off of that san mateo bridge right around foster city boulevard. no slowing shows up. i'll watch for details. meanwhile, coming out of the altamont is the only slowing we see and no major problems. the speeds. the travel times are great. back to you. thanks a lot, mike. well, first at five and new overnight, a late night shooting in antioch leaves at least one victim. video from the scene shows multiple bullet holes and shell casings. so far, antioch police are revealing few details about the shooting that happened a little before 10 p.m.

on pepper tree way near contra loma estates park. police are also not saying if they know what led to the gunfire, and a student today, san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins may announce charges against the teenager accused of shooting 49ers ricky pearsall. pearsall is now recovering at home after being shot in the chest today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us in kris now, according to one of the first responders, the 49ers rookie feared that he might not make it. i mean, we can only imagine what that situation is like, right? but we do know two things are happening in this case today. first, the 17 year old suspect from tracy may learn what charges he faces and whether he will be tried as an adult san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins told us to expect a decision on that today or tomorrow. also today, the 49ers will practice this morning, but without rookie ricky pearsall, who will miss the first four games of the season at least as he continues to recover at home from a gunshot wound, which had him
5:05 am
asking the first officer on the scene, am i going to die? san francisco police sergeant joel harrell heard the gunshots saturday at union square, then saw pearsall shortly after she quickly put one hand over his chest wound and the other over his head, which was also bleeding. and he looks at me. he goes, am i going to die? and i'm just like, no, i take off my hat because i wanted to make eye contact with him. i wanted him to hear me. and i said to him, listen, look at me. i know you don't know me, but i want you to trust me. it's not your time. as sergeant harrell tried to keep pearsall calm, she also managed to get a description of that suspect. and that suspect was taken into custody within a few minutes. union square is sergeant harrell's beat, which is why she was able to respond so quickly. and san francisco police chief bill scott told us that that's the kind of response
5:06 am
he'd like to see on every call in the city. this morning, we will have a crew at the 49ers practice as they return to the field, and we will continue reaching out to district attorney jenkins office about the charges at that 17 year old will face. and of course, we wish best wishes to ricky pearsall in his recovery. laura sounds like a fighter there. thank you very much, chris. well, tonight our raj mathai will sit down and talk one on one with san francisco mayor london breed about the state of the city and efforts to keep people safe in union square. you can watch that interview during our 7 p.m. newscast. 505 in the morning. right now, and days after israeli forces recovered the bodies of six hostages in gaza. grief and anger is setting in among those victims. bay area native hersh goldberg-polin in response, president biden says his administration is close to proposing final ceasefire and hostage deals today in the bay's bri jackson joins us live from

washington. and bri, the president is also speaking out against israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. that's right. good morning, white house officials say it's long past time for a ceasefire deal in gaza. and president biden says he does not think that prime minister benjamin netanyahu has done enough to secure a hostage deal between israel and hamas. frustration following the discovery of six hostages found dead in gaza, including an israeli american who was laid to rest monday. it's terrible and it's tragic, and we learn from israel that he was killed on the shabbat. demonstrators taking to the streets urging the prime minister to accept a deal to bring the remaining hostages home alive. a defiant benjamin netanyahu, pushing back against the pressure. murdered six of our hostages in cold blood after

people briefed on discussions tell nbc news that president biden may offer a final take it or leave it deal to israel and hamas as soon as this week in hopes of reaching a ceasefire agreement. laura. interesting. well, let's see what gets done, if anything. thank you very much. brie. 508 right now in san francisco, an emotional service was held honoring the six israeli hostages executed by hamas. hundreds took part last night demanding the killing end. some of the speakers called the executions a war crime. all were filled with extreme sorrow. we lost six vibrant souls, six lights and our world is dimmer as our collective heart is shattered. concern also centered around the remaining 101 israeli hostages as speakers called for their safe return. the event was held amidst extra tight security. there were no

disturbances happening today in san francisco. supervisor matt dorsey will introduce a new ordinance to crack down on sideshows. mayor london breed is also behind the legislation. now, it would increase criminal penalties for people who plan and participate in sideshows, including roving groups of motorcycles and atvs. it would also expand strategies to prevent sideshows, including collaboration with other regional law enforcement teams and the use of new technologies. happening now in the sierra, a mandatory evacuation orders are in effect as firefighters try to tackle an out-of-control wildfire. it started yesterday afternoon in the sierra county, about 30 miles directly north of truckee, in the tahoe national forest. by last night, it had grown to 1300 acres, so far, there's no word of any damages of homes, but forecaster cinthia pimentel has been tracking the conditions for firefighters out there this morning. yeah, well, yesterday morning we told our
5:11 am
viewers that there was a red flag warning that would be with them throughout the day and unfortunately, those gusty winds could possibly be the cause of just fanning that out of control wildfire. i'll tell you that overnight we did recover humidity a little bit. temperatures not bad, but we'll continue to think of the crews out there as we will be in store for a warm day up in the sierra as we kind of start to kick out a low pressure and build that heat dome over the state and into the bay area. so we'll talk about the heat wave that will be with us throughout the day. i'll walk you through those temperatures and how we can all stay safe together. but for now, mike is helping people get back to work, finding those cheaper gas prices. yeah. and thank you for helping out, christina. cynthia will have us off to work here. looking over here at the crystal clear view of these prices. san jose still showing a nice 389 here. that's the best in the bay. excel gas and mart on north first street, just off the nimitz freeway 880. now, the bright spot is a little dimmer for alameda county. 405 is the best vargas on grimmer road in

5:17 am
consumer confidence is up. the latest read on consumer coming in on friday, adding to an additional positive report on sentiment, sentiment, confidence pretty much the same thing. just two different studies and a fascinating statistic from fidelity, which manages a lot of americans retirement accounts. the number of americans with 401 k's worth more than a million, jumped 31% from this time last year. 31% more millionaires on paper, not counting the value of their houses, just stocks and bonds. the stock market's been on a tear lately. we saw the dow hit its 24th record high this year and $1 million. sure it's not what it used to be. a panel of supreme court judges in brazil has agreed that x should be banned in brazil. an individual judge banned the former twitter after a disagreement with elon musk over what can be said on x and whether x should have a legal representative in brazil. x pulled its staff out of the country, worried they might face

legal trouble. x owner elon musk has refused to ban accounts spreading false news about brazilian elections. brazil's president weighing in, telling the guardian newspaper just because the guy has a lot of money doesn't mean they can disrespect you. who does he think he is? and finally, back here at home, vice president kamala harris says she'll oppose the japanese steel giant nippon steel from buying u.s. steel. she said that in pittsburgh, in front of steelworkers on labor day. as you might guess, u.s. steel should remain american owned and american operated. and i will always have the back of america's steelworkers. now, how much does a pittsburgh love its steel and its steelworkers? i will remind you, the football team literally has the logo of the company on it. there you go. it's burdick. steelers made people happy. yeah, well, moving on from steel there in pittsburgh to steel that was
5:19 am
probably part of this ship. new images show the wreckage of the titanic continues to deteriorate. an expedition team discovered a 15 foot section of the ship's iconic railing has fallen off. now, this is the railing on the bow depicted on the famous 1997 movie leonardo dicaprio's character jack, if you will recall, has his king of the moment, king of the world moment right there. you can see kate winslet and leonardo dicaprio, the most iconic railings in shipwreck history are now forever changed. well, coming up on the today show, more new images of the legendary ship and what the new discoveries mean for the iconic site that is ahead at 7:00 this morning, right after today in the bay and trending this morning as well. if you are feeling lucky, well, why not take your shot at a titanic jackpot? the jackpot for tonight's mega millions lottery.
5:20 am
drawing $681 million. and if you win the whole thing, you'll take home the seventh largest jackpot in mega millions history. the last time someone won it all was just three months ago. so it's adding up a titanic jackpot. i'll take seven. seven is fine. yeah. not bad at all. that is not bad at all. well it is going to be hot. hot, hot. yeah feeling like things are really starting to warm up. definitely. i think really enjoy this cooler part of the morning. and as you're planning your day ahead, i think an iced coffee and really just ice beverages throughout the day are going to keep us cool. this heat has really ramped up from 24 hours ago. we are looking at our planner in walnut creek. as i mentioned, coolest part of the morning right now in the low 60s. and then we'll go into the afternoon and really start to warm up after lunchtime. so just make mind of carrying a lot of water today. cutting back on
5:21 am
recess and maybe those afternoon sports, as we are also going to see a spare the air alert for today and tomorrow. so it's back to school and back to work. maybe the day to carpool or possibly work from home. if you live in the east bay and the santa clara valley, that's where we're looking at our air quality. being unhealthy for people who deal with asthma or any other respiratory issues. and look at these temperatures too, that won't help our air quality as we trap everything closer to the surface and see. 97 in los gatos, down into morgan hill, 95 in milpitas and san jose for today, and up into the east bay. our hottest spots will be, of course, concord, antioch, the tri-valley 99 in livermore. for you today, 97 in martinez. and we get into a little bit more microclimates as we cool those numbers a touch into oakland and down into fremont. i've got you at 92. the sea breeze will be pretty absent, though, over the next couple of days along the peninsula. 78 for daly city to 91 in redwood city, and a pretty warm day up in the city as well.
5:22 am
75 in the outer sunset to 83 downtown. and with the buildings, it just amplifies that heat even more as we go up into the north bay. it will be a toasty day up in wine country, mid to upper seconds even through santa rosa. nearing that 100 degree mark and out towards the marin county coast, we also see a very warm day in the upper 70s and some low 80s. by tomorrow we continue this heat. so it will be. it will be a prolonged event as we look at temperatures going up to 102 in concord for tomorrow, and still that heat will be felt through parts of solano county down into the south bay. and our bay shores will also still be looking at pretty warm temperatures. so just be mindful and take care of yourselves and watch towards the hills too. as we see the potential of some low humidity and some fire danger over the next couple of days. a little bit of relief by the weekend, but still very warm in those upper 80s and seconds. san francisco will see some of its warmest weather this week cooling back down into the weekend. mike, you're taking a look at the bay bridge commute.
5:23 am
how is it? it looks great right now. we're looking at those tail lights of more of them across the span moving. good spacing and no delays, no metering lights and no problem out of oakland. but those will those changes will happen over the next 15 to 20 minutes. a little slowing on the incline already. there's highway 37 look highway 4 back over here in pittsburgh starting to move more slowing as well. the volume starts to build in contra costa county. no surprises out of the altamont pass or in the south bay. we'll start to see slowing right here, folks. you know about that 101. and the incident on the san mateo bridge look like it's completely cleared. no slowing into foster city. back to you. all right. looking good. mike next on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds to a text message about tolls. might raise your eyebrows, but beware, it's a fast track to fraud. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. tltale signs for elco

will actually think twice. consumer investigator chris chmura is here with the warning. fastrack tells us scammers just sent a fresh batch of convincing but phony texts. here's one that landed in our boss's phone. the text says your car has an outstanding toll charge and to pay up to prevent fees, you just click the link. well, fastrack says do not click it because it's not from fastrack. one telltale sign it's a scam. the link here is incorrect. the real website is bay area fast track.org. fastrack says its it
5:27 am
team traced the links to other countries. fastrack says it doesn't text about outstanding tolls. it only sends notices by mail or email. the bottom line is that here in the bay area, fast track will not will not ask for payment by text with a link to a website. period. now, if it's too late and you already clicked the link or made a payment, contact your bank or credit card to try to reverse the scam charges. the fbi says it's been seeing toll scams like this in several other states. you can report bogus toll bills@ic3.gov. you can also let us know. snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. good to know. thanks, chris. next top stories we're following today, including the latest on 49ers rookie ricky pearsall. ahead, we hear from one legal analyst on the possible charges the accused shooter could be facing. the city of san jose

short time from now. this is something that we're really pleased to be able to do for the people of san francisco. it's we have the resources now, painting a new picture. we go one on one with the team working to address san francisco's growing problem of vandalism and a live look outside. things are about to get toasty. we'll lay out the timeline for the coming heat wave, and the conditions you'll feel in your neighborhood. this is today in the bay. summer is hanging on. you're going to feel it. good tuesday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm ginger conejero saab in for marcus washington. we're going to start with taking a look at that forecast. cynthia yesterday you called it toasty tuesday. i like it i love to put adjectives to the days. it kind of helps people remember things, right. and we want people to remember and prepare for this heat that's ahead. we take a look right behind me at our planner in san jose. coolest part will be this morning, so please take advantage of it with
5:32 am
any walks or any kind of errands that you have to do this morning, because after lunchtime, that's where things really get toasty. we'll go into the mid 90s in downtown for today. the kind of weather that you wish we had yesterday off for labor day, but this will be possibly an extension to some people's weekend. looking to get some relief from the heat. we'll get even hotter though, as we go into the south county and into the east bay with some possible triple digits, so maybe spare the air. for today, we are looking at the possibility of seeing some unhealthy air in spots. might be sensitive for people that have those respiratory issues. we also look towards the hills that are going to be really bone dry. so we'll be tracking that in a few minutes. but mike, you're tracking a crash in cocoa county. where is it? it is. it's at deer. deer creek and thompso. so folks there might go. i don't know where that is. good. then you don't have to worry about it because it's off of highway 24. 24 is clear. no injuries reported from that crash. the caldecott tunnel 24. that's also moving very smoothly around into oakland. and so is walnut creek.
5:33 am
but look, highway four at the top of the screen. more slowing. sensors show pittsburg bay point and into concord. now we're looking at 37 with more build out of vallejo at the bottom of the screen, the bay bridge shows a little more slowing on the incline. the toll plaza shows more traffic visible, no metering lights. those should be on in the next, let's say, ten minutes. it's tuesday, traffic tuesday and toasty tuesday. as cynthia talked about. so bring those water bottles and watch for the slowing. there it is. top of the screen. north 101 just kicks off a little break. tap north of 280 all the way up to oakland road. standard pattern coming in through the south bay. back to you. thanks, mike. it is 532 right now. in just a few hours, san jose is set to clear an encampment near norman mineta international airport today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from columbus park and, bob, where will these people go? that's a good question. ginger and laura, there are around 100 people, possibly more, who live in these tents, rvs, campers that are parked along the road, sidewalks, and you see in these
5:34 am
empty lots around columbus park here in san jose near norm mineta. in a statement, mayor matt mahan said that his city has been working urgently to expand safe sleeping and parking and tiny homes. but there just aren't enough for the over 4500 people who live on the streets of san jose. so to answer your w many people here will have access to city services housing when they are cleared out of that clearing out, expected to take place later this morning. the city says this encampment at columbus park poses unique dangers to the community, one the faa requires the city to keep this area clear since it's directly under the flight path to norm mineta, and they need to keep the areas around columbus park clear because of that. two the city is worried about campfire smoke, as well as the large amounts of trash piled up at the park. says birds attracted to the trash pose a threat to planes taking off and landing at san jose
5:35 am
international. mayor matt mason's office did release a statement yesterday expressing the urgent need to clear the space. quote, our fundamental responsibility is keeping people safe. that's our highest priority above anything else we work on, including ending homelessness. there are certain cases where an encampment is so unsafe and violating so many laws that we can't wait for our solutions to scale, unquote. earlier this summer, you might recall, governor gavin newsom of california issued an executive order to take down take down encampments on state property. this after the supreme court issued a ruling allowing governments to do this without providing an alternative statewide over the last three years, local programs for the unhoused have gotten $1 billion a year. but now the governor is threatening to pull funding from counties who are not doing their part. and santa clara county, the city of san jose, has been working with valley water for example, to clear the
5:36 am
encampments along creeks and waterways to avoid the pollution that could get the city fined. recently, san jose shifted some money from permanent housing to more to create more temporary housing. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell today in the bay. thanks for the latest there, bob. 5.35 right now. turning now to developments in the ricky pearsall shooting, san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins is still weighing the charges, which may come as soon as today or tomorrow. the 49ers rookie receiver is now recovering at home after being shot in union square on saturday. he'll miss at least the first four games of the season. jenkins is likely to initially charge the suspect, a 17 year old tracy boy, as a juvenile, but nbc bay area legal analyst stephen clark says this could change depending on the suspect's criminal history. whether or not the suspect has been involved in the juvenile system before is going to be important here. how well did he do in the juvenile justice system? also other factors in
5:37 am
his life will be important. his social history as well. he says the da would have to seek a hearing to charge the suspect as an adult. san francisco police are already beefing up the police presence around union square. kris sanchez is following all of the developments for us this morning. she'll join us with a full report at the top of the hour. now, san francisco is looking to paint a different picture of the city, but two years in and millions of dollars into a graffiti abatement program, is it really moving the bay area forward? that is not fair. this is a scene becoming too familiar for a restaurant in san francisco's mission district. a bar has been around for only two years, but it has been broken into and vandalized four times. they broke the glass in two opportunities in the back door. in the opportunity more. but it's not just that the mural was destroyed by people with graffiti and target. we hired
5:38 am
another artist and the other artists do another art, and the art was destroyed. just one week after they finished the wall danielle is referring to gets tagged several times a month, so much so that it's thought of as a hotspot. ana is one of 1200 properties in the city's opt in graffiti abatement program. we get about 40,000 complaints a year. san francisco's department of public works says they have abated around 3400 graffiti operations in the past two years. this location on haight and divisadero has been abated 14 times in just ten months. this is something that we're really pleased to be able to do for the people of san francisco. it's we have the resources now to the faster we, abated. we send the message that we're not going to allow this to happen. lamar simpson, who works for public works, says he's seen it all. the dude came in like,
5:39 am
where is the graffiti? he's like, i came way from la to put my name over here. i'm like, are you serious? and he's like 57 years old. i couldn't believe that he's out most days cleaning up what taggers leave behind, which i wanted to try cleaning myself. how long would this take, if it was me by myself. just take two hours. i timed myself. if it's two people, it's an hour and a half. if it's three, it's less than an hour. like 45 minutes. when you paint over it, it makes it look. it beautifies the neighborhood. and a lot of, a lot of neighborhoods come out and thank you for it, you know what i mean? so that makes you feel good. like you really did something good. well, public works tells me it's been a while since the city did a rollout of private property owners impacted by graffiti. but the last time a study was done around ten years ago, it cost the city $10 million to mitigate graffiti in san francisco. pretty good. put that painting there. yeah got to got to work

out. helping out. well, happening today, oakland mayor sheng thao will announce a deal to sell the city's portion of the coliseum to an entertainment group. the african american sports and entertainment group has agreed to pay the city $105 million as part of a major redevelopment plan for the coliseum. the money will help the mayor close the city's budget deficit. the group already closed a deal with the a's for the team's stake in the coliseum, an event celebrating that deal is scheduled for noon. san francisco supervisors today will revisit a recently approved ordinance to ban ai rental software. the software is called realpage and yardi, and it uses algorithm based tools to set or recommend rental rates for landlords. supervisors approved it unanimously in late july. now, if passed, san francisco will be the first city in the nation to ban it. let's take a live look outside from the east bay. this tuesday morning, it feels like a monday. a lot of people have that extra day. hope you enjoyed it. things are going to warm up. cynthia is in for
5:41 am
kari. this morning. how hot are we going to get? definitely going to see some really toasty temperatures on the board and even parts of our coastline will warm up pretty quickly here throughout the day we are looking at pacifica starting off with some patchy fog and in the 50s, but then it should get into the mid 70s there. as we go on into the afternoon, you could be looking at crowds coming to the beach as we look at a 30 about 30 degree difference. once you start to move into our valleys here. livermore. good morning. we see the coolest part of the day right now and then into lunchtime, nearly 90 degrees. so it could be the day where you look for the ac and possibly a ways to cool your home down. as we take a look at those temperatures in the upper 90s close to 100. so i want to help everybody plan their day ahead. i'll be back with a look at our microclimates in a few minutes. but mike, you're keeping an eye on some potential delays this tuesday. yeah, like the bay bridge toll plaza. we know about that one. and just in the last few seconds, cynthia, we've seen the slowdown as folks approach the bay bridge toll plaza. now,

they may have just queued the metering lights. if not, we know they're slowing on the incline and we see the slowing in the decline into san francisco, which typically queues the need for those metering lights to keep everything moving smoothly. 37 and highway four no surprises. we just see more volume. we should see some slowing on two. 42 coming up in just the next few minutes. 24 smooth in toward the caldecott and getting across the bay into san francisco. no. there's a game for the giants tonight and a game for the a's. so both sides of the bay do have that. you will not cross under the bay though. i want to give folks this notice. there's overnight maintenance tonight closing that webster tube heading over to the island of alameda. that will happen tonight and tomorrow night. that is open by 4:00. the next morning starts at about ten. so you can watch it and avoid about 9:00. you start heading south to these bridges across to the island of alameda, if that's where you need to go. locals know about that. well, it's well publicized as well. in the south bay, we do have one event at sap. it's a concert. jelly roll will be performing tonight at 7 p.m, so just a note for folks 87 might see a little more traffic. santa clara street
5:43 am
getting to and from the arena there. and we're looking at your typical build north 101 with this morning slowing starting off, there may be a crash. it just popped up in the area right around where that congestion is at oakland road. so we'll watch the transition. i'll get you into more when chp gets me info. back over to you. i like when you tell us the concerts. oh, good. good. wish we could go to them more. yeah. just listen to jelly roll on the radio. there we go. all right. thanks so much. well. 542 for you now, scary moments for u.s. soldiers overseas. coming up on today in the bay. dramatic new video of their assault. democrats on a labor day blitz across the rust belt will have the latest on the race for the white house. plus, one step closer to winning it all. tonight's last round of the quarterfinals on america's got talent. how one local contestant is soaking it all in with a shot for the finals on the line. you're going to want to stick around. you

francisco skyline. there we are looking at a few clouds lingering about the city, but then some fast clearing and some fast warming in the city today. look at those temperatures in the low 80s this afternoon. if you don't have ac right now, would be a good idea to start planning how you're going to cool yourself down there in the city. we are looking at this

lasting for a couple of days. i'll be here with the full forecast in a few minutes and back to the south bay. we talked about that crash. looked like it was right where we see the slowing for oakland road. the commute is this direction with the arrow. see that northbound. but the crash is in the opposite direction. no injuries reported. everybody to the right shoulder. again opposite. your commute should not impact things, but we'll show you the big build up over at the bay bridge that's happening right now. sounds good. we'll check back with you. 546 right now. authorities in turkey say 15 turkish nationalists are now detained in the wake of new video showing two u.s. soldiers being assaulted. a warning here you might find this video disturbing. the video, posted on social media shows a group holding a man on the street and putting a white bag over his head. another man comes in and punches the group. turkish youth group posted this video. turkish representatives say other u.s. service members quickly came to the soldiers defense. in a statement, the embassy confirms the men are service members and the incident happened in izmir

yesterday. they also say both men are now safe. pope francis is visiting indonesia this morning. here's some new video of day one of his 11 day trip. now, over the next two weeks, he's going to be visiting indonesia east timor, papua new guinea and singapore. during this visit to asia, he will address a number of issues including interfaith dialog and climate change. 547 two decision 2024 the democrats blitzing across the rust belt over the labor day holiday and scott, unions wages and the voice of the worker all a common theme. yeah, very coordinated. good morning to you. is any kind of blitz needs to be coordinated. kamala harris, joe biden who we don't see much of these days, were together in pittsburgh. america's steel town, where harris declared she would oppose the sale of u.s. steel to a japanese steel conglomerate and reminded american voters she is and was a key part of the white house. here's the vice president, and i have spent more
5:49 am
time with this extraordinary human being. when the cameras were not in the room, when the stakes were high, when the heat was intense, and joe biden has always stood with the workers of america and labor unions of america always, always. now hardly a coincidence. i think the white house releasing this picture of president biden in the situation room, discussing the hostages in gaza close by his side on his right. kamala harris, vice presidents are often ignored by presidents. vice president lyndon johnson had a very crude way of explaining the job. but when vice presidents are running for president, they tend to be portrayed as indispensable. polling continues to show harris gaining on or surpassing former president trump in several states. she's ahead in pennsylvania, which means she's got to convince voters there not to take it easy. it's going to
5:50 am
be a tight race to the very end. so let's not pay too much attention to those polls because as unions and labor knows best, we know what it's like to be the underdog. and we are the underdog in this race. candidate for vice president tim walz, also part of that democratic blitz across the rust belt in milwaukee, he addressed union members on labor day. walz is a union man himself. unions and organized labor. or are more popular today than at any time in our lifetimes. any time. and you know why? because it's union halls where the purest form of democracy is practiced. the opportunity to speak your mind about your job, the opportunity to elect your leadership, the opportunity to talk about the things that impact your life and then go advocate for it. walz's motorcade, really a small caravan of small cars and vans,

was involved in a traffic accident in milwaukee. one van carrying members of the press rear ended another. walz was in a different car. he's fine. there were some minor injuries. president. former president trump will be back campaigning tomorrow. he's going to hold a town hall in harrisburg, pennsylvania, hosted by fox news channel's sean hannity. laura, interesting. thank you very much, scott. 550 right now, fresh off of his gold medal win for team usa, let's just say warriors superstar steph curry keeping things pretty busy. that's right. this morning, however, he found a few free moments to visit the today show plaza. and yes, he i hope so for sure. i mean, i've been there going into my 16th year. yeah. and i always said it's a goal of mine to finish my career, you know, with that organization that see me go through the ranks and accomplish amazing things with you know draymond i know klay is not with us anymore. but i want to keep winning obviously. and i know you know we have hopefully some some days ahead still doing that. so
5:52 am
definitely want to be there. and that was steph's answer when he was asked by craig melvin about retiring with the warriors. i know warriors fans definitely want that to happen as well. we've got him through 2026, but you can watch the full interview here. all he has to say on the today show that starts at 7 a.m. right after today in the bay, that last contract extension is looking pretty good. looking pretty good? well, tonight's the final edition of the live quarterfinals of america's got talent. well, there's one gold buzzer left to send someone to the finals in two weeks and three spots left in next week's semifinals. nbc's mark barker has the reaction from the acts who moved on from last week's round. i'm going into work being a nurse at a prison with the nation's largest death row population may not unnerve simon, but singing live last week on agt did. when it came time for me to get ready for the stage, i said, what's my first line? i was shook, but not so
5:53 am
shook. when you're not next to me that she couldn't still blow everyone away and earn heidi klum's golden buzzer when she sings that tone, i get goosebumps. and it's like, i don't know, it's just yummy. and now this simon has a spot in the finale like just getting on the show is great, but that buzzer brings a whole new type of people looking at you and i wanted it. mark barker, nbc news. all right. the bay area pulling for the oakland girl there. not too bad. golden buzzer and all. you can watch all the action on america's got talent. airing tonight at 8:00. well, she's hitting the high notes, and we're hitting the high temperatures, right? yeah. i love your little connection to music. yesterday and today, we were just having a great time. can't help myself. all right. let's go ahead and start our day by looking over at in fremont. i would roll down the windows and
5:54 am
appreciate a little bit of the breeze for right now, because that sea breeze is going to go away for a couple of days. it's going to take its extended labor day holiday as we ramp up these temperatures and will really as we go on into the middle of the morning, 70 degrees by ten. there and into your lunchtime, a toasty 82. so we're going to start to plan how we're going to take lunchtime recess. those afternoon sports. and maybe the gym will be packed earlier on this morning as people avoid a lot of that afternoon exhaustion from this heat. we take a look at our temperatures. it's going to be very, very warm and through parts of livermore concord. i think that will be our hottest spots down into the south bay too. we're looking at mid 90s in san jose, 91 in palo alto, and we get a few microclimates in the picture, with 82 in san francisco for today and 70 degrees in half moon bay. notice there it also says it's a spare the air day. maybe consider carpooling biking to work just to kind of give all of that pollution a little bit of a chance here we go on into tomorrow. we're actually going
5:55 am
to get a heat advisory for tomorrow and thursday. as we look at our hot valleys near those one hundreds and through parts of san rafael, santa rosa, 102 possible out in concord and solano county as well as in the south county, could be getting that century mark in morgan hill, 96, in san jose, and we'll still continue with those warm temperatures along the peninsula in those low 80s. it gets a little bit better for the peninsula and the coast, with a little bit of breeze returning by thursday and friday, but still microclimates in full effect, about 20 to 30 degree difference as you make your way inland. however, by the weekend i'd say about late friday saturday we are looking at a system that could bring some showers just to our east and that cloud cover back to the bay area. how close those showers will get to us. maybe we'll get some mist here as we wake up on saturday and on into sunday, but the models are still having a hard time working through this right now, our main event, of course, is the heat, so spread
5:56 am
the word. it's going to be hot. take advantage of the cooler parts of the mornings here and later on at night to get those errands done. we see a little bit of a cool down a aside from these triple digit temperatures into the weekend, san francisco if you don't have ac, the beaches are going to be packed and i need you to look for that cooling place now. mike, there is a crash reported at the bay bridge. what's going on? you know, we had an unusual pattern in the backup started on this side instead of the middle that we often see. so you see this still this unusual pattern here. i think there may be a crash somewhere along these lanes off to the right. nothing appears to be a problem as far as the speed sensors go. but then there's another crash reported on the span itself. i'm noticing some slowing around, but there's that optical illusion around this bend as well. reports of a crash around treasure island, but the flow continues here. we're looking at the flow on the speed sensors, and we are looking at more slowing in those two spots. so that does indicate some smaller crashes. the rest of the bay is normal. back to you. all right. thanks a lot, mike. happening now. bart is set to start installing new fare gates at the richmond and 24th mission

bart stations. that one is in san francisco. similar changes have taken place at other bart stations. the systemwide upgrade is in part aimed at cracking down on fare evaders. construction is expected to last two weeks. now bart has a goal to replace all 700 gates across bart system by the end of the year. it is certainly a busy monday here on today in the bay, ahead at 6:00. police are trying to piece together what happened after an overnight shooting in antioch. the revelations from officers at the scene. plus as the bay area faces a heat wave, a wildfire north is forcing people from their homes. a new late night video showing intense flames out of the cierra. and don't forget nbc bay area streams 24/7. you can watch us whenever you'd like on roku or other streaming platforms. stick around. it is 557. you're watching today in the bay
