heat after a pleasant holiday weekend. we'll be dealing with some considerably higher temperatures today. we're tracking how long this late summer heat wave will last.

people are saying you're the hero, police officer. i don't feel that way. no. i'm just. i'm just happy that, you know, i was able to help. as san francisco police sergeant praised for helping in her urgent response to help the san francisco 49ers ricky pearsall after a shooting near union square. her heartfelt reassurances to him in the frantic moments following the gunfire. take it or leave it. we're live in washington with the new pressure from the white house. as unrest boils over in israel, with demands for a cease fire and a hostage deal with hamas. this is today in the bay. it's 6:00 on this tuesday morning. i'm ginger conejero saab in for marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. cynthia is in for kari this morning. she's got a look at our forecast, and temperatures are going to start heading up. yeah. yesterday was the unofficial end of summer,

but the temperatures are saying, don't forget about me so much. yeah, not so much. we are looking and enjoying the cooler part of this morning overlooking downtown san jose. the sunrise over the foothills there, mainly in the 60s throughout the bay. and if we have a clear start from our sutro camera in san francisco, overlooking the bay of the san francisco golden gate bridge, we are going to be in store for a warm day ahead. that's a little precursor there, mainly in the 50s and 60s, a bit cooler up into parts of sonoma and napa there, but it will be warming quickly here as we go on into our lunchtime hour, upper 80s and through parts of san rafael, dublin, and down into los gatos, 70s and in in the city. and it only gets warmer from there as we see the heat return on this tuesday. now we do have a couple of advisories and some things that i want you to take mind of as we go back to school and back to our activities after labor day. so i'll be back with that in a few minutes. mike, there's a crash on the bay bridge. what's going on? we don't like that activity,

but it is going on. approaching treasure island, you see a smoother flow with things gumming up right around the tower here. reports as you approach treasure island of this up there, the flashing lights. so we do have a crew on scene. slowly moving. that's the good news. i'm hoping they're going to clear this soon, but i don't see this backup right here. moving just yet. again. westbound 80. the bay bridge itself does show that slower drive on the speed sensors. we also have another crash at the toll plaza, or just past the toll plaza out of the view of my camera. but two complications as you get over from oakland into san francisco. the slowdown starts here in richmond and nothing surprising there for a tuesday. we are looking at a smooth drive outside of the area. again, the bay bridge is slowing the slowdown because of a crash on the span right now. back to you. thanks a lot, mike. new overnight a late night shooting in antioch leaves at least one victim. video from the scene shows multiple multiple bullet holes and shell casings. now, so far, antioch police are revealing few details about the shooting that happened a little before 10 p.m. on pepper tree

way near contra loma estates park. police are also not saying if they know what led to the gunfire. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins, as soon as today, may announce charges against the juvenile accused of shooting. shooting 49ers receiver ricky pearsall in the dramatic aftermath. pearsall feared he might not make it. today in the bay's kris sanchez is in our newsroom. and chris, that's just one of the revelations from first responders out there. yeah, and from his mother to laura, ricky pearsall, his mom said that the bullet went in through his chest and out through his back, barely missing his vital organs, and he could not have known how lucky he was at that time. now, two things are happening in the case today. first, the 17 year old suspect from tracy may learn what charges he will face and whether he might be tried as an adult. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins told us to expect a decision on that today or tomorrow. also today, the 49ers will practice this morning, but without rookie

ricky pearsall, who will miss the first four games of the season at least as he continues to recover at home from that gunshot wound, which had him asking the first officer on the scene helping him, am i going to die? san francisco police sergeant joel harrell heard the gunshots saturday at union square, then saw pearsall shortly after. she quickly rushed to him, put one hand over his chest wound and the other over his head, which was also bleeding. and he looks at me. he goes, am i going to die? and i just like, no, i take off my hat because i wanted to make eye contact with him. i wanted him to hear me and i said to him, listen, look at me. i know you don't know me, but i want you to trust me. it's not your time. as sergeant harrell tried to keep pearsall calm, she also managed to get a description of the suspect who was taken into custody within a few minutes. he, too had been shot in that

attempted robbery. union square is sergeant pearsall, or rather sergeant harrell's beat, which is why she was able to respond so quickly. san francisco police chief bill scott says that's the kind of response he would like to see on every call. this morning, we will have a crew at the niners practice as they return to the field without pearsall, and we will continue to reach out to district attorney jenkins office about those charges that that 17 year old will face and best wishes to ricky pearsall in his recovery. laura, no kidding. he is so, so lucky. all right. thank you very much. well tonight our raj mathai will sit down and talk one on one with san francisco mayor london breed about the state of the city and efforts to keep people safe in union square. you can watch that interview during our 7:00 p m newscast. now, days after israeli forces recovered the bodies of six hostages in gaza, grief and anger are setting in among those victims. bay area native hersh goldberg-polin in response. president biden says

his administration is close to proposing final ceasefire and hostage deals today in the bay's brie. jackson joins us live from washington and brie. the president is also speaking out against israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. that's right. good morning. ginger. so white house officials say it's long past time for a ceasefire deal in gaza. and president biden says he does not think that prime minister benjamin netanyahu has done enough to secure a hostage deal between israel and hamas. frustration following the discovery of six hostages found dead in gaza, including an israeli american who was laid to rest monday. it's terrible and it's tragic. and we learned from israel that he was killed on the shabbat. demonstrators taking to the streets, urging the prime minister to accept a deal to bring the remaining hostages home alive. a defiant benjamin netanyahu, pushing back against the pressure. they murdered six

of our hostages in cold blood after this horrific murder. i believe that anyone serious could actually say, now you need to make more concessions. president biden telling reporters netanyahu is not doing enough to reach a deal, while adding that his administration is close to presenting a final proposal this week. we're in the middle of negotiations. the president, vice president harris and white house officials meeting in the situation room to discuss the next steps in negotiation efforts. families are holding out hope that their loved ones return home soon. i think the white house understands the urgency. i think they've been acting all along with conviction, trying to push the parties in the area to reach an agreement. the thought that he's alive and that he's waiting

for us to rescue him, that's what keeps me hope. president biden promising families of hostages that he's not giving u. and two people briefed on discussions tell nbc news that president biden may offer a final take it or leave it deal to israel and hamas as soon as this week in hopes of reaching a ceasefire agreement. ginger thank you for the latest there. brie. closer to home in san francisco, an emotional service was held honoring the six israeli hostages executed by hamas. hundreds took part last night demanding that the killing end. some of the speakers called the executions a war crime. all were filled with extreme sorrow. we lost six vibrant souls, six lights and our world is dimmer as our collective heart is shattered. now concern also centered around the remaining

101 israeli hostages, as speakers called for their safe return. the event was held amidst extra tight security. there were no disturbances. happening now in the cierra. mandatory evacuation orders are in effect as firefighters try to tackle an out-of-control wildfire. it started yesterday afternoon in sierra county, about 30 miles directly north of truckee in the tahoe national forest. by last night, it had grown to 1300 acres. so far, there's no word of any homes damage. forecaster cinthia pimentel has been tracking some of the conditions for firefighters this morning. yeah, we really started to talk about the conditions up there yesterday. of course, the tahoe was a popular destination. i wanted people to know that there was a red flag warning. it expired. and into this morning we saw the temperatures recover as well as the humidity. but still pretty critical numbers up there. will continue to watch this situation throughout the day as we get some breezy winds out there. but for us here in the bay area and really through

much of the state, we are going to begin that heat wave for today. it is a spare the air alert day. so anything that we put out into the atmosphere, it's going to sit close to the surface. so be aware of that. if you have any respiratory issues. we'll continue to track any possibility of fires starting. it is dry out there and those temperatures will be spiking. i can offer you a little bit of cooling into the weekend as we track a system offshore that could bring back that sea breeze, but we'll watch as that develops. mike, you're keeping an eye on gas prices for people going back to work today. folks might be taking road trips, for example, over the long holiday. had a refill so you can get to work. no excuses today, folks. let's look at the cost of filling up here. san jose's best is 389 still, that continues from last week. xcel gas and mart's the one we call out in north first street just off the nimitz just off 880 there. the bright spot is a little dimmer for alameda county. 405 is the best we can do. that's for cash at vargas on grimmer road in fremont. and then across the bay from that is san mateo county. the best price in that county? 409 at a gas mart on marsh road.

current exchange rate. new zealand officials say the fees will help with tourists impact to the environment. however. tourism leaders in the country fear the increase will deter visitors. it's supposed to be so beautiful. there it is. i've never been. well, maybe one day. trending this morning. those needing a little lift had to look no further than venice beach near los angeles yesterday. the muscle beach championship competition made its annual return. the competition includes categories like bodybuilding, bikini physique and vintage swimsuit. wow. he had the face to go with it. he did? now look at that. they're working out in that beautiful venice beach weather. not a surprise. it's easier to get out there on the beach. you want to head to the beach? i. don't know. i haven't kept up with it since i left. oh yeah. i used to live down in southern california. that's right. i want to say anything about my titles

down there because there are none. but don't flex. you might rip that. yeah. be careful. kick it altered. got to keep it together. you got to alter it again. oh, man. it keeps shifting. my muscles keep moving. all right, well, there. your muscles are supposed to get bigger, bigger, bigger higher higher, higher. mine's going down to the waistline. temperatures are going up. temperatures are going up. temperatures are going up, and we need to wear that sunscreen. remember, if you're off showing off your muscles a lot of sunscreen with the sun, that will just be blaring down on us over the next couple of days. look at this sunrise over livermore out in the tri valley. beautiful. 54 degrees. it is a little bit cooler up into the north bay. a light layer will do it, but then please wear some light fitted clothing as we are going to be ramping up those temperatures very drastically compared to our labor day monday. san francisco just a stunning view over the city there and into the marin headlands. and we'll also start with a pretty mild morning down here in the south bay. at 59 degrees. this will be the coolest part of our day as we track mid 90s here through downtown 97, in los gatos, and

it just gets warmer as you go into the south county. 99 in gilroy. we get into some microclimates and see some of our hottest spots for today out towards concord and eastern cocoa county. there in antioch, 99 in livermore, 98 in walnut creek. and we're going to do upper 80s and some low 90s as you make your way along the east bay shoreline from oakland down into fremont, along the peninsula. it will be a very toasty day as well. upper 70s through daly city, and we'll do 91 in palo alto. of course, san francisco is usually one of our coolest spots, but it is going to get pretty warm. 83 in downtown to 76 in ingleside and up in towards the north bay, we continue to see the high pressure building through wine country up towards lake and mendocino counties, and out towards the coast to 80 degrees in point reyes. today, that looks like a beautiful day. we will hug the sea breeze if we get any for today out there at the beaches. we also have a spare the air alert day if you can carpool to avoid any more pollution in the air, that would

be a good idea. it will be unhealthy for sensitive groups in the east bay and into the santa clara valley. so just watch for those respiratory changes by tomorrow. it is still pretty hot up in here, with more places going into those triple digits in the east bay, the north bay and the south bay and our peninsula and the city remaining pretty warm. we'll look for san francisco, some cooling by the end of the week with the return of that sea breeze, but temperatures still very mild in the low 70s upper 60s through the weekend. and for our inland valleys, it will be hot over the next couple of days. please take those walks early and towards the weekend, making those plans. wear those hats and the sunscreen. mike has bay bridge recovered. we are not without backup and that would not be the case for the morning. but there were two crashes, one near the toll plaza, which i believe cleared the backup. now back to standard form. what you can expect a smooth drive off to the far section of the 880 overcrossing as you get to that second area toll plaza and the

speed sensors improve a bit approaching the area of treasure island, i saw some flashing lights there. the lighting is now tough for me to see if there's any other crews on scene, but there's no update from the injuries from the earlier crash near treasure island. a little bit of extra slowing continues right there. the rest of the bay looks good coming off the bridge. carquinez bridge smooth flow. highway four heading over toward that area. still no slowing on. 242. that's good. holding off a bit for that volume through contra costa county. walnut creek interchange smooth 680 shows the slowing as you get down through the tri valley right here. typical around bernal on the southbound side, also building towards sunol 880 through hayward and into union city. typical pattern there. no problems out of the altamont or for vasco. back to you. thank you. mike next on today in the bay nbc bay area responds to a text message about tolls. might raise your eyebrows, but beware it's a fast track to fraud. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. telltale signs for commuters to steer clear next. and another reminder we're working to help clear the shelters this morning.

consumer investigator chris chmura is here with a warning. fastrack tells us scammers just sent a fresh batch of convincing, but phony texts. here's one that landed in our boss's phone. the text says your car has an outstanding toll charge and to pay up to prevent fees. you just click the link. well, fastrack says do not click it because it's not from fastrack. one telltale sign it's a scam. the link here is incorrect. the real website is bay area fast track .org. fastrack says its it team traced the links to other countries. fastrack says it doesn't text about outstanding tolls. it only sends notices by mail or email.

the cool part of the morning right now. where those light layers throughout the day, the sunscreen, your water bottles carry them because we warm up very quickly through mid-morning, by noon and into 1:00 upper 80s there and it only gets warmer as you go on into eastern koko county, eastern alameda, up into the north bay. our valleys 90 to 100 are possible for today and really stretching through a good chunk of our workweek here. even the bay side getting very toasty into the 80s. so remember to possibly carpool if you can spare the air a little bit for today and tomorrow. i'll be back with more on this heat wave in a few minutes. back to you. thanks a lot, cynthia. in less than an hour, the city of san jose is expected to force dozens of people from an encampment near norman mineta international airport. and today, in the bay's. bob redell joins us live from columbus park. bob, what is the mayor saying this morning? that this is an urgent matter. this homeless encampment behind me here near columbus park needs

to be removed. there are notices that are posted on the back of some of these vehicles saying that there's going to be, quote, an abatement taking place. these notices were posted last week. i just read one and they are asking people to have all their belongings removed from here by 7:00 this morning, which is in 30 minutes. obviously you don't see anyone getting up and leaving yet. not clear what's going to happen at 7:00 or if the city is going to be waiting until after that time. there are around 100 people who live in these tents, campers and rvs. they're parked along the roads, on the sidewalks and in these empty lots along columbus park here in san jose. in a statement, mayor matt mahan of san jose said the city has been working urgently to expand safe sleeping and parking in tiny homes, but there just aren't enough for the over 4500 people who live on the streets of san jose. so it's not clear how many of these people here will have access to city services and or housing. in other words, where will they go? the city says this encampment at columbus park poses unique dangers to the

community. one the faa requires the city to keep this area clear since it's directly under the flight path for nearby norman air international. two the city is worried about campfire smoke, as well as the large amounts of trash piled up at the park. says birds are attracted to the trash, and those birds pose a threat to planes taking off and landing. mayor meehan's office released a statement yesterday expressing the urgent need to clear the space. quote, our fundamental responsibility is keeping people safe. that's our highest priority above anything else we work on, including ending homelessness. there are certain cases where an encampment is so unsafe and violating so many laws that we can't wait for our solutions to scale, unquote. earlier this summer, governor gavin newsom of california issued an executive order to take down encampments on state property. this was after the supreme court issued a ruling allowing governments to do this without providing an alternative statewide. over the last three years, local programs

for the unhoused have received roughly $1 billion a year. but now the governor is threatening to pull funding from counties who are not doing their part. in santa clara county, for example, the city of san jose has been working with valley water to clear encampments along creeks and waterways to avoid the pollution that could get the city fined. and recently. san jose shifted some money from permanent housing to create more temporary housing. reporting live here outside columbus park in san jose, bob redell today in the bay. thanks for the latest, bob. it is 635. and turning now to developments in the ricky pearsall shooting. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins is still weighing the charges, which may come as soon as today or tomorrow. the 49ers rookie receiver, now recovering at home after being shot in union square on saturday. he'll miss at least the first four games of the season. jenkins is likely to initially charge the suspect, a 17 year-old tracey boy as a

juvenile, but nbc bay area legal expert stephen clark says this could change depending on the suspect's criminal history. whether or not the suspect has been involved in the juvenile system before is going to be important here. how well did he do in the juvenile justice system? also other factors in his life will be important. his social history as well. reporter he says the da would have to seek a hearing to charge the suspect as an adult. san francisco police are already beefing up police presence around union square. well, san francisco is looking to paint a different picture of the city. but two years in and millions of dollars into a graffiti abatement program, is it really moving the bay area forward? there is no fair. this is a scene becoming too familiar for a restaurant in san francisco's mission district. arepa has been around for only two years, but it has been broken into and vandalized four times. the broke

the glass in two opportunities in the back door. in the opportunity more. but it's not just that the mural was destroyed by people with graffiti and target. we hired another artist and the other artists do another art, and the art was destroyed like just one week after they finished the wall danielle is referring to gets tagged several times a month, so much so that it's thought of as a hotspot. arepa is one of 1200 properties in the city's opt in graffiti abatement program. we get about 40,000 complaints a year. san francisco's department of public works says they have abated around 3400 graffiti operations in the past two years. this location on haight and divisadero has been abated 14 times in just ten months. this is something that we're really pleased to be able to do for the people of san francisco. it's we have the resources now to the faster we, abate it, we send the

this afternoon. we continue with the 90s for the south bay from fremont over on into gilroy. 97 for you and a very toasty tuesday for the peninsula with the lack of that sea breeze, we're going to rise up those temperatures to the low 80s in the city. 91 in mountain view for today. it gets even warmer for tomorrow and thursday as the heat finally settles, which is why we're going to put up this heat advisory for tomorrow and through thursday. so this is a multiple day event. please be mindful not only of the fire danger with the low humidity, but also for your health. sports are back in schools. you might need to cut back on those practices and change your workday. a little bit to work from home, or maybe work in the earlier parts of the morning into tomorrow. we could be looking at more of those above 100 temperature readings coming into place for the north bay the east bay out towards livermore and the south bay, so that heat risk becomes a little bit major as we go through the week. now, speaking of the rest of the week, aside from this heat wave

here to carry us into the weekend. i'm looking at a bit of a system that will bring the return of that sea breeze and the cloud cover, and will knock down those temperatures a few degrees. now san francisco will be also and along the bay shore, some really rare weather. but of course, september is our warmest month. by the weekend we bring down those numbers a few degrees down into the 70s, and that should carry us through the weekend as well. mike, the south bay commute is kicking in. where you work over here in san jose, 101 right here as you're approaching our camera. just north of that two 8680 interchange. actually, it was an ebb and flow. it was very clear after a big backup. things are kind of building up. you see here more folks are shifting over to 280 north. look at that. the build up at capital expressway for both 101 and 87 shows where things are feeding onto the freeway. but this is an early slowdown. this is tuesday though, so we sometimes see this build up. this is more extensive than we've seen for quite some time. north 85 slows past the crash right around the 87 interchange. no lanes blocked. but that's the south bay build.
