on sunday, her father, touching her coffin as he mourned. >> matt, the anger is so palpable. part of this is because of this timing. these hostages were executed quite recently, and there had been a deal so, so close. is that what is driving the anger in israel? >> reporter: yeah, that's right, savannah. a lot of the anger is focused on the fact that just before these negotiations, there was supposed to be some of these hostages released in some sort of hostage deal. in fact, as you mentioned, you know, the autopsies show that 48 to 72 hours before their bodies were found, they were alive. they died because israel and hamas weren't able to come to a deal. even though hamas pulled the trigger, a lot of folks here on the street, they say that netanyahu is to blame. >> matt bradley in tel aviv. thank you very much. we turn to the race to the white house and the post-labor day sprint to election day. with just nine weeks to go now. new polls are revealing where things stand.

meanwhile, vice president harris spent the holiday on the campaign trail, including a rare joint appearance with president biden. we have two reports starting with nbc's chief white house correspondent, peter alexander. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, craig, good morning. with labor day now in the rear-view mirror, the starting gun has officially sounded for the last leg of this 2024 race. vice president harris hoping to capitalize on her momentum, notably casting herself as the change agent in this campaign, even though, of course, he is the sitting vp and insisting despite new polls that show she has an building, she remain tts understand dog. with just nine weeks to go, the battle for the white house is now a dramatically changed race. harris versus trump with the current president joe biden campaigning for the first time alongside his vp, who now tops the democratic ticket. >> she has a backbone like a ramrod. she has a moral compass of a saint. this woman knows what she's doing.

>> reporter: harris in pennsylvania using the labor day holiday to emphasize her commitment to union workers. >> when union wages go up, everybody's wages go up. when union workplaces are safer, all workplaces are safer. when unions are strong, america is strong. >> reporter: noticeably off the trail this labor day, mr. trump, but attacking harris on his social media platform, writing, all americans are suffering during this holiday weekend. also over the weekend, the former president sparking new controversy by insisting he had every right to interfere with the 2020 election while saying repeatedly his false claim the criminal interference cases against him are politically motivated. >> who ever heard you get indicted for interfering with a presidential election where you have every right to do it, you get indicted and your poll numbers go up. >> reporter: the next major moment in this race the presidential debate now just one week away.
7:10 am
multiple sources familiar with harris' preparations tell nbc news she's held a series of work sessions between campaign stops and her official duties. unlike mr. trump who shared the stage with president biden earlier this summer, it will be harris' first debate in nearly four years. and no public events are scheduled today for either harris or trump, but this week does notably mark the beginning of voting season, believe it or not, with the first absentee general election ballot getting mailed out in the key battleground state of north carolina this friday. savannah? >> always good to remember, voting is about to begin. peter, thank you. let's bring in your national political correspondent steve kornacki to break it down. let's start with the state of the race from a national perspective as we head into this final stretch. >> yeah. here we go, savannah. this is the average of all the polls out there nationally right now. you see kamala harris, the vice president, with a three-point lead over donald trump. two ways to look at this. if you are a democrat, obviously
7:11 am
you are happy you are ahead and it is an improvement from when joe biden was the candidate. he trailed donald trump all year. but if you are a republican, you can take solace in this. this is not unfamiliar territory for donald trump. labor day 2020, he trailed joe biden by nine. he almost came back to win that race. 2016, hilly clinton by five of labor day, he did come back to win. >> so harris has a tighter national margin. but as we know, these elections are determined state by state in these battleground states, so let's look at the state of the race right now. >> yeah, let's go through that. zen battleground states. memorize this list at home. we will talk about it a lot between now and november. but the key here is that six of these seven states all went for joe biden in 2020. north carolina, they only went for trump. you see right now the polling is tight in just about all of them. trump ahead narrowly in georgia, north carolina. small harris leads. except take a look here like in wisconsin. harris on average leading by six. this is important to note, the polling was off in states like wisconsin in 2020 and 2016.
7:12 am
it underestimated trump support. whether it does that again this time around, a major question. >> that made a huge difference of course in the result there. so let's do my favorite map, the 270. love to see how this play out when you start switching how the battlegrounds go. >> yeah, mine too. so it got those seven states just mentioned in gray here, the battleground states. two perspectives here, if you are harris, your most direct path is this. you call them the great lake states. wisconsin, if you can win that, michigan and pennsylvania all went for biden four years ago. hold those and you see it right there. harris is at exactly 270. but here is the complication for her. what if she slips up in one of these pennsylvania? she didn't pick that state's governor as the running mate. some people wonder about that. if she were to lose pennsylvania, it is the largest of these battleground states. her number comes down. she would then need to win two from this sun belt here. meanwhile, if trump were to get pennsylvania, it opens up the simplest path for him.
7:13 am
get pennsylvania, hold carolina which he won in 2020 around just win back georgia, which he narrowly lost. and he would be at exactly 270. >> steve, you are not wearing khakis. you are wearing gray pants. are you going in a new fashion direction that we need to be aware of? >> yeah, i'm always very conscious of my fashion choices here. you know me. you know me. >> we're on the journey with you. thank you very much. craig, over to you. >> s.g., thank you. also this morning, two u.s. marines are recovering after they were assaulted by a large mob during a port visit in turkey. their ordeal caught on camera. nbc's chief international correspondent keir simmons joining us with the latest on this one. keir, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, craig. the u.s. navy has multiple warships in this region. in the waters off iran and in the eastern mediterranean. now this morning the national security council just saying that it is troubled by the assault on two u.s. marines and that turkish police are taking the matter seriously. this morning turkey says 15

this is normal, this is a true negative. in that case 77% of women came back for subsequent follow-up. what happens if the mammogram gets flagged as being abnormal. then women are sent for additional images, biopsies, short-term interval follow-ups. what they found is those women who had either a recall or a biopsy or for that short-term follow-up were significantly less likely to come back for routine screening mammograms which basically means the psychological impact, the stress, the anxiety that happens when you get a mammogram result that is abnormal but ultimately you are found that you don't have cancer really leads to this attrition in women coming back. >> it is not that people aren't getting flagged and not going for the follow-up. it is the next time it is mammogram time they don't want to go back. >> i'm not going through that again. >> exactly right. >> it was false positive. what's the point? >> exactly. >> so are there any subsets of women that are particularly likely susceptible to this? >> there are. we always talk about breast density. in women between 40 and 49,
