here's all it's expected to face a judge today, while pearsall, amazingly, is now back with his team. we're live this morning at levi's with the latest developments strengthening ties with san francisco's chinese community. the unique event aimed at helping law enforcement build relationships. and a live look outside this morning. this should be the hottest of the days coming up for us in this current bay area heat wave. meteorologist kari hall of course, tracking those conditions for us, including today's heat advisory. this is today at. the bay. good wednesday morning. i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. we'll take a look at that morning commute with mike in just a little bit. but kari bringing the sunshine with that yellow today and the heat. right. we're going to have some hot weather for the inland valleys again today. and we are under a heat advisory for much of the bay, with the exception of the immediate coastline and parts of the peninsula. but we are now including san francisco in that heat advisory that
5:02 am
continues until tomorrow evening. so the valleys are going to see those highs in the 90s and even triple digits. the bay and the coast will be in the 70s and 80s. and with all of this heat, we will also have a very high fire danger right now. nice and comfortable. much of the bay area in the 50s and 60s. we're down to 55 right now in sonoma and santa rosa. the good thing is that we do have these cool mornings to start, but our highs today will be hot once again, headed to 103 degrees in gilroy this afternoon. cupertino 98 degrees and will also see a lot of triple digits for much of the east bay. so we'll be tracking this and eventually we will see those numbers coming down. we'll have more on that in a few minutes. but mike, chp has notes about the golden gate bridge. yeah, and that's a typical note across the bay. but one of the cool spots, i think, for the day, from what you're showing. carey, we're looking over here before it burns off. low visibility issue coming across from the north bay. no

surprises and nothing big enough to show up on our road. weather index here. smooth drive throughout the north bay. contra costa county, and easy flow of traffic all the way in through the south bay and south county. we have that overnight road work that should be picking up right now through niles canyon. one crash shows up where they're slowing as well, slowing out of the altamont. pretty typical. and the crash before you get to the altamont. so this will affect folks out of tracy before 205 and 580 merge together. and then things slow down a bit. pretty typical. back to you. thanks. so much, mike. well, later today, the 17 year-old suspect in the shooting of the 49ers first round draft pick, ricky pearsall will appear in court. he's being charged as a juvenile, at least for now. today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us live from levi's stadium this morning, where the team is certainly as well as the community reacting to this shooting, kris. i mean, this could have turned out very, very differently. and we know that the team practiced here in santa clara yesterday without ricky pearsall. but general manager john lynch said it really seemed like a miracle that he was able
5:04 am
to make it out the way that he did. now, about 50 miles north of here in san francisco, district attorney brooke jenkins in san francisco was telling us that she filed attempted murder charges with additional firearm allegations, very serious charges, which the 17 year old will face at the city's youth guidance center as a juvenile. now jenkins told us that she has not ruled out requesting that that 17 year old be transferred to adult court. i have attempted to make it clear that there will be accountability when people commit crimes, most certainly serious crimes of this nature. now, pearsall will likely be back in uniform before all of that plays out. he is on the reserve non-football injury list for the next four weeks. john lynch says that he'll need the time to recover, not just physically, but also emotionally from that close call. he said that when pearsall was shot at union square while shopping for luggage for away games, the
5:05 am
bullet went in through his chest out his back, leaving major organs and nerves intact. nothing short of miraculous that he came out of this as good as he did. just so, so grateful that everything worked out the way it did. several other teammates saying that they are all rooting for ricky pearsall and his recovery. there's only so much information that we can get about this suspect because he is a juvenile until and if he moves into adult court, will be able to get more information. we know that he'll be at that hearing today and will be calling out to district attorney jenkins office to get any update that we can in santa clara, kris sanchez today in the bay. yeah, glad he's going to be okay. thanks, chris. authorities this morning have not yet identified the driver killed when two cars plunged off the road. this is near san francisco's historic cliff house. this is around 5:00 last night. police at this point will only confirm those cars were involved in some kind of

tracking that heat across the bay area, it's moving in carey. is this going to be the hottest day of the week? it's going to be pretty hot, but it looks like it's going to be equally as hot tomorrow. so we may not be all clear just yet as we're getting started. a little bit of fog over san francisco and that's going to keep those temperatures from heating up as quickly. but i do think this fog is going to clear out within the next few hours. and then at 8:00 it is starting to become mostly sunny and temperatures warming up there into the mid to upper 70s. and we will see parts of the city in the mid 80s today across to the bay oakland it will be 87 degrees, but look at all of these highs over 100 degrees. so that means there will be a major heat risk. and that is an impact on how this could affect your health. and so we're definitely needing to be a lot more careful and stay hydrated throughout the day. we will talk more about this in a few minutes. but mike has a look at where we can find some lower gas prices. keep that car gassed up. you might need to sit in there with air

morgan hill. and we're also seeing a lot of upper 90s and highs over 100 for much of the north bay, san francisco today, 84 degrees, which is pretty warm and will be in the upper 80s in oakland, while fremont will see a high of 94 degrees. look at all the color contours here. the major is the red. that means that this could have a major heat risk for people outside. people who are not do not have access to air conditioning. and so we'll have to watch out for that for today as well as tomorrow. another day with hot temperatures. and for some spots, it may be just as hot as it was today. not really coming down until about friday when we see it starting to dip just a little bit. not as many triple digits, but we're still going to be dealing with some heat in dublin up to 93 on friday, while san francisco is going to come down a few more degrees with upper 70s, the high pressure that's bringing the heat slowly sliding off towards the east will allow for a dip in the jet
5:21 am
stream, and that's going to help cool down those temperatures and eventually, by the middle of next week, this low will be dipping in. that will bring us significant cool down and possibly even a slight chance of rain. so we'll be watching out for that. a look at walnut creek. we'll see some more triple digit temperatures today, and it may be slightly hotter here tomorrow, but then on friday we're in the mid 90s. and then we have a lot of 80s in the forecast extending through next week. so we do have a few more days to deal with this high heat. eventually it's going to start to feel a little bit better, but the weekend it's still pretty warm with upper 80s and low 90s for those hotter spots inland, while san francisco will go from mid 80s today to upper 60s for the weekend, so there will be a significant drop there. and mike, you have a look at the san mateo bridge. yeah. no worries folks, starting with the san mateo bridge because it looks very nice over here westbound with those tail lights nicely filled in these lanes. good spacing. look at the great spacing and no crazy lane changes. be careful out there,

and the first thing you should do is obvious. but i'm going to say it anyway. you should save your receipts. next check the federal government's airline customer service dashboard. it's online at flight rights dot gov. reimbursement policies vary by airline, so the dashboard lists carrier by carrier what each airline offers or doesn't offer. there are sections for meals, ground transportation, hotels, and more. the reason for a delay or cancellation matters. airlines don't cover expenses for things that are beyond their control, like weather, but they can cover things like maintenance issues, and it meltdowns on the dashboard. each airline name is a link to its full policy. we follow the united link and found it's pretty clear for example, when
5:27 am
controllable delays or cancellations go overnight, united's policy says it will offer you a free hotel. or if you have to book one yourself, you can submit your receipt to our customer care team and will reimburse you for reasonable hotel costs. what's reasonable? we couldn't find a definition, so there might be some gray area if you want to file for reimbursement, do so fast. while the airline's records are still fresh, include your confirmation code, ticket number, or boarding pass. if you write a letter, be succinct. stick to the facts, then share your receipts. expect a reply within a couple of weeks. if it doesn't go your way, you can file an official complaint with the u.s. department of transportation. although no airline offers cash compensation when it inconveniences passengers, many do offer an olive branch in the form of airline miles or vouchers. a future free flight might make a sour travel experience a little less bitter. thanks, chris. well, coming up

5:32 am
expect. more heat? i'm ready for fall. yeah, i think we all are. yeah it has been hot. it will be another hot day, and we are under a microclimate weather alert due to the high heat as well as the unhealthy air quality that we will see today. and so as we take a look at this map, it shows those areas highlighted in orange with the heat advisory through tomorrow night. now, as we take a live look outside in san jose, it's now nice and cool. we're in the mid 60s. there is a light wind. the sky is clear, but the temperatures will be heating up. and i'd say if you have the windows open, probably close them around 9:00 10:00. it's going to be heating up and the rest of the day we're going to see the high heat ramping up as our highs here head for the 90s. and even a lot of triple digits from the south county to the inland east bay, as well as the far north bay. so we'll be tracking all of these changes for you. mike has a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you're talking about when to close the windows. this morning. the window is closing on a clear drive through the bay bridge
5:33 am
toll plaza. because. 532 now we're going to start to see more traffic, of course, as the minutes tick. and in about ten minutes, we'll see the backup forming on the incline already starting to slow a little bit as more folks get toward where we lose about half of those lanes. as we're looking over toward the north bay just under where it says 101, you see a little slowing south 101 toward spencer lee zogsports toward the spencer lee. we should see a crew clearing from that area. typical bill for 37 and highway four shows more slowing. there's that south bay bill. we'll talk about san jose coming up. back to you. well, this morning, san francisco police are trying to figure out what caused two cars to go over a cliff near the city's historic cliff house. today, in the bay's bob redell joining us live from the scene. this is where one person sadly was killed. and bob, i mean, just a tragic story here. do we know what happened? we've got a pretty good sense, but we don't have all the details. you can see the broken fence behind me here, where at least one of the cars went through and went over a cliff on the other side. you can't see it right now because
5:34 am
it's dark out, but that's where one of the cars crashed. this happened just before 5:00 yesterday afternoon. this is by the cliff house here near ocean beach in san francisco. there were two cars involved, a white tesla. and then what looks like a gray station wagon or suv. we believe one of the cars was parked up here when the other car ran into it. both cars again went over the cliff. the driver of one of the cars died on the scene. the other driver escaped with minor injuries. nbc bay area. sky ranger also shows firefighters pulling a dog who was in one of the cars from a bush. this was here at the crash site. we believe the dog is fine. here's a surfer who witnessed this crash, and me and my buddy were out there and we heard this noise and we looked up and i thought the cliff was collapsing, but it wasn't. it was two cars flying through the air. it looked 50ft in the air. one of them. as far as what might have led up to this crash. sfpd. the police department did not provide us any details.
5:35 am
reporting live here by the cliff house in san francisco. bob redell today in the bay. must have been frightening to see as well. thanks, bob, for the latest. well, the teenager accused in the shooting of 49ers receiver ricky pearsall is scheduled to be arraigned today. district attorney brooke jenkins yesterday announcing the charges. and she's still not ruling out the possibility of arguing to try that 17 year old suspect as an adult. pearsall was shot saturday afternoon in union square and miraculously avoided serious injury. he will be out of action for at least the next four weeks. 49ers general manager john lynch says that pearsall must prioritize returning to full health before he retakes the field. he's going to need that time physically. he's going to need that time, emotionally, mentally. he was disappointed but understood that we that we put him on on that list and what that entails. now, lynch says that pearsall actually felt well enough the night of the shooting to facetime his teammates during
5:36 am
their annual preseason team party. our kris sanchez will have a full wrap up of the latest developments coming up in our next half hour. a string of recent copper thefts are leaving one south bay neighborhood in the dark. san jose police tell us copper thieves have currently knocked out at least 300 street lights across the city. that includes part of the reinhart neighborhood near independence high school. one neighbor says he first noticed the problem over the weekend. not from the lights, but ground covers surrounding his home. some of the covers on the ground were opened up with wires just sticking out of them, cu went all the way down the street. we realized that there was a bunch of lights out about 18 on the street alone, which with the high school, it's a safety concern. leaders in other cities, including richmond, tell us this is part of a growing trend. the contra costa county district attorney's office recently hired a crime analyst to unite bay area agencies in their prevention efforts. disturbing developments in monterey county. this is where one man is now accused of killing at least 80 farm

animals. the situation unfolding early yesterday morning. this is on a farm in prunedale. now, authorities say that that suspect was armed with a large collection of guns fired off hundreds of rounds. neighbors actually called 911. deputies say that he was arrested after his vehicle crashed in a nearby vineyard. the scene left even veteran law enforcement officers in shock. i just figured a neighbor was scaring away a coyote. second shot i heard. i thought the same thing. really? not that uncommon out here. and then right after that, it was just a boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom for like, 15 seconds. and then at that point, i knew something wasn't right. i've been doing this for, you know, 24 plus years now. and no, i've never seen anything like this when it comes to animal life. lost. it's very tragic, very unfortunate. now, no people were injured. that suspect is facing multiple charges, including cruelty to animals. happening now. firefighters still struggling to

gain any control over a large wildfire burning north of truckee. they call it the bear fire, and it is raging in the tahoe national forest, with at least 2000 acres burned since it started on monday. it is still at zero containment, with mandatory evacuation orders in effect for hundreds of homes. no word yet on a cause. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the conditions on the front lines. there this morning. and we do have some cooler temperatures, those early hours. it's prime time to try to get more containment on this fire. the bear fire that continues. but we are seeing some favorable conditions at least this morning. it's in the upper 50s. the wind has calmed down, but the gusts may pick up again today. some of that smoke coming in from the bear fire has been causing a hazy sky. and we'll see that throughout the day. today, some slightly moderate to unhealthy air quality for us for today. but it does look like with the stronger westerly wind, we may see that beginning to clear out by tomorrow evening.
5:39 am
but we can see the sources of all of that smoke. it's numerous fires burning across the region, including the bear fire, where we are going to continue to see that smoke have an impact on our air quality. for today. it's unhealthy for sensitive groups. that means if you have a heart condition, if you have any kind of breathing problems or asthma, you should definitely limit your time outside. today it's going to be unhealthy or most unhealthy in the south bay, santa clara valley, as well as the east bay, but pretty moderate elsewhere. and our temperatures are going to be very hot. dangerous for the middle of the afternoon, with concord high topping 105 degrees. so we will gradually cool off. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. and mike, you have a look at some predictable changes in san jose. san jose, we know it's 539 now as the clock changes we should see this slowing. and that's what we do have visible on our camera here on 101 northbound with these headlights starting to slow down just right about here. our cameras just south of alum rock. and you see the slowing up to
5:40 am

5:52 am
listening there? to tear in space. this is off the group's latest album. we actually spoke with them ahead of their upcoming show over at shoreline amphitheater in mountain view next week, and they say they have distinct memories of playing shows right here in the bay area, no matter the weather. i've got very fond memories of san francisco, the crowds there are some of the best in the world. actually, i think we played on treasure island in 2016. i don't know if that festival still exists anymore, but it was so windy that the stage almost blew away and we like, could not go on stage for several hours. and then when we did, we were just kind of like scared that the entire thing was going to get swept out to sea. that was exciting. wow. okay. welcome to the city by the bay. right glass animals. big show is a week from tonight over in mountain view. those tickets are still available, so maybe not as windy in mountain view. yeah. don't go to san francisco. i hope not, but the thing is, like
5:53 am
the weather here just changes minute by minute and you're just like, ooh, i'm hot, ooh i'm cold. it's sunny now. it's cloudy. so you know we're going to see that again today. and there's just such a big range from the coastal areas to the inland valleys. there is a range of about 40 or 50 degrees. and our highs, we're expecting for today. so as we take a look at the start of our morning, it's in the low 60s in dublin, 63, in palo alto, san jose, at 65 degrees and 56 in san francisco. so we're starting out pretty even, nice and comfortable. but here's a look at our south bay high temperatures for today. cupertino 98 degrees. it will be 103 in gilroy this afternoon. and we're also going to see those highs as hot as 103 in antioch, 105 in concord, danville and pleasanton, 100 degrees, with upper 80s today expected in oakland fremont, 96 there and also 96 in palo alto. daly city will be in the low 80s, while half moon bay will be
5:54 am
in the upper 70s. and we'll also see seconds and 80s in san francisco up to the upper 80s there downtown. and then 99 in napa for this afternoon, 104 in ukiah and bodega bay will be in the mid 70s, a high pressure that's giving us all of this heat will slowly move away. and then the jet stream that usually separates that warm and cool air. that's the flow of those upper level winds. we'll see that beginning to take a dip. and for us, that means a big change in our weather. but that's not happening until the middle of next week. and then this low coming in right behind that could possibly bring in at least some spotty showers across the region. here's a look at napa. we are dealing with the high heat, and it may be even slightly hotter tomorrow there compared to today with some mid 90s in on friday. but then the weekend will bring it back to the 80s. and then we do have some cooler weather ahead for much of next week. so we will have the high heat with us at
5:55 am
least through friday. and then the weekend is looking slightly better. we'll bring it down to the upper 80s on sunday and then mid 80s for early next week. but it does look like today and tomorrow are the hottest days, and there may be some spots that get even slightly hotter temperatures tomorrow and then going into the rest of the forecast, we'll see those temperatures coming down a very nice and mild weekend for san francisco with highs in the upper 60s through next week. and mike, you have a look now at that commute through cocoa county. yeah we zoomed in a bit over here. northbound 680 just fine. easy drive heading up through walnut creek. it's southbound toward the walnut creek interchange. seeing all these lanes fill in and moving south. still moving smoothly. those speed sensors are great here on 680. but look at 242. a lot more traffic coming in. no incidents reported. as you travel through concord and down through pleasant hill, we do have that slowing continuing there and more folks feeding in off of highway four, which just continues to show that slower drive pittsburgh and bay point
