vaccinated against polio in the gaza strip. >> matt, we are seeing pressure on the prime minister, not only on the streets but from major israeli leaders as well. >> reporter: that's right, hoda. we're seeing that political pressure and urgency here and also from major political leaders. he's a political rival of netanyahu's and a former war cabinet minister. yesterday he criticized the prime minister and said he's the one standing in front of a deal. he said that the real problem comes down to a lack of truly strategic decisions. hoda? >> all right, matt. thank you so much. we appreciate it. we turn to another global hot spot, ukraine, reeling from a new wave of russian air strikes overnight as one of the deadliest attacks since the war started two and a half years ago. more than 50 people killed by missiles that struck a military academy. nbc's chief foreign correspondent, richard engel joins us from ukraine and has more on that.

also his exclusive conversation with president volodymyr zelenskyy. richard, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, craig. it was a critical time to sit down and talk with president volodymyr zelenskyy. it was his first interview since ukraine launched its ongoing military operation inside russia. and now it seems that vladimir putin has begun to respond militarily with intensified attacks across ukraine. this morning, russia launched another major attack against a ukrainian city. this time hitting lviv, a normally peaceful city closer to poland than the front lines. the missiles and drones struck residential buildings, apartments and private homes in the historic district. children are among the dead, according to ukrainian officials. killing more than 50 people. is it the start of vladimir putin's revenge for ukraine's incursion into russia last month? president volodymyr zelenskyy sat down with nbc news in his first interview since that surprise move. now you have captured this territory in russia.

so the big question is, what do you plan to do with it? >> we don't need the russian territory. our operation is aimed to restore our territorial integrity. we don't need their land. >> reporter: is the plan to take more territory? >> i will not tell that. sorry, i can't speak about it. it is like the beginning of this course of operation. i didn't communicate anything currently. with all respect, i can't speak about it. i think that the success is very close to surprise. >> reporter: but conceptually you have this territory now. you say you don't want to keep it -- >> conceptually we will hold it. conceptually we will hold it. >> reporter: he said president putin shouldn't be allowed to carry out what he calls terrorist attacks against civilian areas. isn't putin getting away with it? there was a decision by the international criminal court to

arrest him, but he's in mongolia today, and instead of being arrested, he was given a state reception, so do the sanctions against russia work? >> no, they do not. they respect putin more than the international law. >> a fascinating conversation there, richard. meanwhile, you are following another major shakeup in the war this morning. what more can you tell us about that? >> reporter: there's been another government shake-up here in ukraine. this time the foreign minister tendering his resignation. he's preparing his victory plan to president biden, to vice president harris and to donald trump in the united states later this month. and he wants to arrive with some military success after the ongoing military campaign inside russia and with a new revitalized government, so he wants to go in with a full head of steam as he goes to the

united states later this month. >> all right, our chief foreign correspondent, richard engel in ukraine for us. thank you. meantime, there are just 62 days into the election. harris and trump barn storming through key battlegrounds this week while also preparing for next week's crucial debate showdown. nbc's chief white house correspondent peter alexander has the details for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. for all the enthusiasm that kamala harris generated in the last month, and trump struggles to widen his support, this remains a very close race with under nine weeks to go. and a new urgency for both candidates ahead of next week's showdown. heading to new hampshire today vice president kamala harris is set to propose new benefits for small business owners, an effort to support the creation of millions of new businesses. it is part of an effort to bolster the vice president's economic policies with polls

showing voters trump president trump more on handling the economy. mr. trump, who is off to pennsylvania today, again attacking harris. >> i don't know how people can vote for somebody that has destroyed our country. >> reporter: and dismissing national polls that show harris now outperforming him. though, still within the margin of error. >> we're leading in the polls, and it looks close, but i think in the end it is not going to be a close election. >> reporter: it comes ahead of next week's presidential debate, the only time harris and trump will meet face-to-face. she will hold another round of debate prep while in pittsburgh tomorrow. gop allies who publicly expressed frustration with mr. trump's personal attacks on harris are urging him to use the debate as an opportunity to refocus on portraying her as a

positions under andrew cuomo and kathy hochul's offices. she was operating illegal as an agent for the chinese government and making millions in kickbacks. linda sun and her husband chris yu walked out of federal court on tuesday released on bail. sun pled not guilty to taking millions in payments and gifts from chinese officials in exchange for influencing the highest levels of new york state government for years. her husband pleading not guilty to money laundering. governor kathy hochul's office said she was hired decades ago and fired in march of last year amid allegations of misconduct. >> i'm furious, and i'm outraged and absolutely shocked. the second we discovered some levels of misconduct, we fired her. we alerted the authorities. >> reporter: in a 65-page indictment, prosecutors allege sun blocked taiwan officials from having access to the

governor's office, drafted unauthorized invitation letters to fraudulently get visas for chinese officials and changed messages regarding issues of importance to china. kickbacks went to her husband's businesses to fund a lavish lifestyle. multimillion dollar homes in long island and hawaii, cash and luxury cars including a 2024 ferrari roma like this that's priced over $260,000. the government says it will seize all of it, including more than $130,000 in a safety deposit box. the couple and their family also received expensive gifts, travel expenses paid and tickets to shows, according to the indictment. and on multiple occasions specialty salted ducks prepared by a chinese official's personal chef. the doj calling sun's actions a direct threat to american national security. >> the way americans think about national security is being corrupted by foreign adversaries who want to tell us how to think and how to act.

and that is a national security threat. >> reporter: outside of court, sun's attorney defending his client. >> we are looking forward to exercising our right to a speedy trial and addressing these accusations in the form where it is most appropriate, which is a court of law. >> sun and her husband are out on bail, but there are restrictions. the couple's travel is heavily limited and they aren't allowed any contact with the chinese consulate. a spokesperson for former governor cuomo told nbc news sun worked as a community liaison and had little to no interaction with the government, guys. a lot more to get to, including extreme weather impacting millions of people from the west coast to down south. flash flooding in parts of texas led to several swift water rescues yesterday after drivers were left stuck in their vehicles. that area could leave several more inches of rain in the next couple of days. out west, we have extreme heat.

joins the table. new developments in the matthew perry case. >> some of the people accused of providing the "friends" star are pleading guilty to a variety of charges, a trial date has now been set for two others who are key to the case. nbc's chloe melas has been following the story from the very beginning. good morning. >> good morning, guys. prosecutors announced they intend to try that alleged drug dealer jasveen sangha and also dr. salvador plasencia together in march. her attorney telling us the "ketamine queen" nickname is misleading, adding that trying to blame her for matthew perry's death is unfair. this morning, new developments in the criminal investigation surrounding the death of matthew perry. the department of justice announcing a march 2025 trial

date has been set for jasveen sangha, also known as "the ketamine queen" along with dr. salvador plasencia. they are among the five charged in perry's deal last year. the beloved "friends" star was found unresponsive in a hot tub in his home last september. he died from the acute effects of ketamine. prosecutors say the drugs that caused perry's death came from sangha. >> she took advantage of mr. perry by selling large amounts of ketamine to mr. perry. >> telling nbc news she's being unfairly singled out. >> how did she get connected to matthew perry in the first place? there is like mystery surrounding this. >> well, there is no mystery. she isn't connected to matthew perry at all. >> but in charging documents, text messages show she was aware of the danger. she has pled not guilty to a

different, unrelated drug case. >> people like to make her out into something that she isn't. but there is a whole different side here, a story to be told and it will be told in a trial. >> fleming pled guilty in august, admitting he brought drugs to the live-in assistant. another man charged in the case was released on bond on thursday. his attorney says he plans to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine. >> it is incredibly unfortunate what happened because it happened to a patient. he is trying to do everything in his power to right the wrong that happened here. >> the other doctor charged has entered a not guilty plea and was freed on a $100,000 bond. he has been allowed to resume his medical practice but he has to disclose the charges against him and he can't prescribe controlled substances. they are currently scheduled to face trial together in march, but her lawyer tells us he expects that's going to change. >> all right. chloe melas, thank you.

laura, jarett, let's put that senior legal correspondent hat on for a moment. >> yeah. okay. we have most of the people that already plead guilty, but you have two holdouts who have not, so that must be a lot of pressure on them. >> especially because all the text messages involved in this case are pretty damning, right? if they don't plead guilty, all of that stuff comes in. where the doctor is calling matthew perry a moron. imagine how that's going to play in front of a jury? the timing here, though, is really noticeable, right. this trial isn't happening until march of 2025. that gives a long leeway here. but, again, the sooner they plead guilty the better for them. if they don't plead guilty soon, prosecutors can use that against them. you get points if you take responsibility early. >> this idea that the doj wants to try them together, is there a risk there? >> there is a risk for the defendants. normally you want to have your

we have seen days of protests in israel. even today, activists are rallying their numbers for the fourth night. today rage still burning on israel streets after a huge night of huge protests and clashes with police. the sparks came over the weekend when israel's military discovered six dead hostages. hamas pulled the trigger, but these protesters blaming prime minister netanyahu for not sealing a deal to get nearly 100 hostages home. netanyahu is remaining defiant on a central issue in negotiations, the philadelphia corridor, a strip of land on the border. netanyahu insisting on keeping israeli troops on the land, something hamas has refused to accept. >> these murderers executed six of our hostages. we're asked to make concessions? >> while overnight, vice president kamala harris' husband, who is jewish, spoke at a memorial for the hostages.

the victim was a married father of two. the suspected gunman was arrested after leading police on a chase and then driving into the water in galveston. elle macpherson is revealing she had been diagnosed with breast cancer a number of years ago but took a surprising route for her treatment. nbc's anne thompson is here with more on this story. >> good morning, laura. australian supermodel elle macpherson announced she was diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2017. but it is her choice of treatment that's making waves. in the '80s, elle macpherson was australia's first supermodel. a "sports illustrated" staple and self-described accidental actress. >> how you doing? >> okay. >> what? >> now at 60, macpherson revealing she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 following a lumpectomy.

but declined to do the kepl yo chemotherapy treatment recommended by her doctor. she says after consulting dozens of doctors and experts, she chose to go her own way, opting to spend eight months in arizona under the care of a wholistic doctor. macpherson saying in her book, saying no to standard medical solutions was the hardest thing i have ever done in my life, but saying no to my sense will be harder. from cancer doctors -- >> as a patient, you have to remember there is three categories of treatment. there is things we know work. there is things we know don't work and there is things that we just don't know. >> and cancer survivors, too. >> just don't look at a celebrity and say she didn't do chemo so i'm not going to do chemo. >> macpherson was diagnosed with dcis, a noninvasive breast cancer contained to the milk ducts normally contained by surgery and radiation. >> i think it is important to

understand that breast cancer is not just one disease. it is a whole collection of diseases. and some pose very little risk and some pose a lot of risk. >> the director of the carol frank burke breast care center at the university of san francisco says treatments for breast cancer are still evolving. >> there is no certainty that a particular treatment is going to work or isn't going to work. we're getting better and better as we keep doing studies and keep learning. >> her cancer is in clinical remission, but the discussion about her choices is not going away. now, one thing to consider as you think about macpherson's story is the kind of cancer she had, dcis, has a very high success rate. 98% survival rate after ten years after surgery, regardless if there is any treatment that's followed.

challenges, of course, and some patients say their health is suffering because of it. morgan chesky has that story. morgan, good morning. >> yeah, guys. good morning. these numbers really speak for themselves here. a recent survey found portland, organ has the longest wait time at 46 days. but it is not unusual to wait a month or longer. some doctors say they're doing more for their patients for less money and that their time is being stretched incredibly thin. and now both sides are searching for a solution. it seems these days trying to get an appointment with a health care professional is becoming increasingly challenging with patients waiting days, weeks and even months to be seen. >> i live in a big city. i can't get in for a month. >> can i get an appointment maybe some time this week to see the doctor? they're like, no, sorry, we're booked two months in advance. >> the numbers show it's becoming a more common occurrence nationwide. a third of patients have been

unable to see a doctor in the past year due to unavailability issues. and for those who were able to get an appointment, nearly one in five patients had to wait anywhere from one to three months to be seen. >> it is incredibly frustrating. >> when victoria holmes faced a four-month wait for a neurology appointment in washington, d.c. where she lives, she sought treatment in her hometown of dallas, texas. >> i had to take the desperate measure of going home to dallas to see a neurologist because i'm terrified there is something wrong with me. >> it's a frustration for patients and doctors. >> we all became physicians to take care of patients, and that is getting tougher every day. >> dr. bruce scott is the president of the american medical association and an ear, nose and throat physician in louisville, kentucky. >> right now things are at almost crisis level and physicians are literally closing

their practices. >> medical professionals say it is the result of a growing population needing health care, along with a workforce that's burning out due in part to time-consuming paperwork from insurance companies and reduced physician reimbursement. some doctors are turning to concierge services to reduce the number of patients they say, charging hundreds or thousands of dollars for their care. others are passing administrative fees on to patients, forcing many to find new doctors. >> i think we're facing even a worsening problem in the future, unless something changes. >> now, as for those doctors switching to concierge, the numbers are hard to nail down here. but estimates are that it is in the thousands. it is a small percentage of overall doctors practicing medicine, meaning there should be plenty of options out there for those not able to shell out the extra money for the kind of care that we once received without that extra cost. guys? >> a lot of questions here. morgan, thank you. >> let's bring in dr. john hn torres. this explains a lot of stuff. there are fewer doctors. they're retiring earlier. the population is ages.

what should people do? >> there is a couple things. you have to realize what's happening here. a couple things, it is not just the specialists. primary care doctors, it is incredibly hard to get in to them on a timely basis. there's a few tips you can do here, but morgan put the head on the nail here, essentially those that can afford concierge medicine, those with private insurance or government-sponsored insurance and those who simply go without. it is important when you go there to do the things you need to do to make it an efficient visit. >> when you finally get in to see your doctor, how do you get in. >> get a list of the questions you want answered. make sure on that list there is two or three you have to get answered before you leave because you might have a limited amount of time. use the nurse and the staff to get answers you might not get from the doctor. bring in test results. print them out because the doctor might not have access. it could be from a different system.

they don't have those answers so that way you could get them answered. don't leave without scheduling your next appointment because you say, i'll do it later. you wait until february and say, we can't see you until october. >> how important is it to have a primary care doctor? a lot of people that are young and healthy, you just have an ob. is it important to have that relationship? >> it is extremely important. they are the gatekeepers of everything. remember the old days when they would come to your house and new your family and everything, and we're not in that system anymore. they could say, you need to see a specialist and in some cases they can do it. they don't necessarily need to send you to somebody. >> you are often rushed in those visits because they're stacking up more patients because there are fewer doctors around, so you really have to be on the ball. >> exactly. like i said, write those questions down. be your own advocate and get the two to three most important ones answered. take a list of your medications, too, and all the dosing. just in case they don't know that or you get somebody else. >> you can't get into a neurologist? those are desperate measures. >> there are a lot of patients that can't get in to see the

an independent studio now, so partnering with peacock on this was definitely a big deal and will packer productions also is a partner of ours in it. our relationship has been very, very strong through the duration of time. in this one, it was about the collaboration of us really, really utilizing those relationships we had. the calls, you know, you can go down the list of everyone. it's cast to perfection. so many great names, melvin craig. >> terrence howard. >> terrence howard, david banner. the list goes on and on. we wanted to really give a premium culture display of ip. and i think "fight night," since boomerang and those collectives of culture, of color on screen, you know, it's been a minute since we've had another version of it. and i think this is the closest that we've come within "fight night" in the story.
