more medals at the paralympics. track and field star ezra winning gold in two separate events. we do begin this hour with that breaking news out of georgia, at least four people are dead at a school shooting in georgia. they say at least nine others are injured, it could be a bigger number, but they're now saying nine, the suspect is in in fact alive and is a teenager. they're still checking whether they had -- whether that person had a prior affiliation with the school. lawn enforcement is on the scene. the new school had just begun a few weeks ago, the school there and other nearby schools were all put on lockdown earlier today, but students now at this hour seem to be in the process of being reunited with their parents and guardians, some of
12:03 pm
them heading home. priya sridhar is at the scene, what are you seeing and hearing, what more have we learned? >> reporter: i'm not sure if you can hear it, it's farther away now, you can hear some sirens in the background because there's still a massive law enforcement presence here, authorities from local, state and national agencies, we have the fbi here, the georgia bureau of investigation all conducting an investigation because this is very much still a crime scene, about 1800 students go to apalachee high school, they were directed to move to the football field after this horrific event occurred and they were being questioned by authorities and waited for them to be reunited with their families and that's essentially what we're seeing right now, we're seeing a lot of families walking over to the school, that's because a lot of the roads in this area have been completely blocked off, so you
12:04 pm
saw miles and miles of vehicles of families trying to get to the school as fast as possible. setting off on foot to get here. the school is directly across the street from a preschool and a middle school. kids of all ages being picked up by their families. i got an opportunity to speak to a sophomore who attends apalachee high school, she said she was in an weight lifting class when the sirens went off. she called her mom and was concerned she might never see her mom again. when she was able to eventually reunite with her mother she was sobbing historically. there's still a lot of chaos and still a lot of questions about how this could have happened and what the motive could have been. >> priya, are we getting a
12:05 pm
better sense of what happened at all? do we know where this shooting happened? we're learning that the suspect they have in custody is indeed a teenager. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. there's a lot of speculation right now because as i mentioned this school has about 1800 students in it and a loft them went to the middle school that's right next door and they moved over to this high school when they've graduated. officially from authorities they haven't given us too much information just yet, we're expect another briefing from the barrow county sheriff in about an hour. hopefully we'll get more information at that point, kate. >> you mentioned earlier, or we mentioned there was a lackdown at school and other schools in the area, have things sort of settled down at this point, are people able to get to their
12:06 pm
children? >> reporter: yeah, it appears that all of the lockdowns have been lifted and also it appears that so much these roads are now being opened for through traffic, so it seems like families are able to get to their students a little bit faster and a little bit more easily. we also know some schools in other surrounding counties were also placed on a lock june just out of an abundance of caution, certainly the top priority right now is for the families to be able to get to their children. >> priya, thank you so much for the latest there. we have been hearing for hours from community members reacting to the shooting trying to get in contact with loved one ones at the school. here's a bit of what some of them had to say. >> she was with one of her friends. he was two doors from where it happened. he heard some knocking on the
12:07 pm
door before it went into lockdown, he heard banging on the door, then we heard someone said, open that efing door, let us in. then he heard boom, boom, boom. when he went to leave there was gun powder, shells and blood everywhere. >> my teacher told us to get in the corner. i heard like screaming and the police officers, get down. >> my classmate was opening the door but she turned around and said he had a gun, as soon as she said that, he started firing. >> i thought i was going to die. >> a loud boom as if a locker had slammed. then, the teacher took a peek outside, we heard repeatedly the banging again and that's when we could identify it was a gun and then the hard lockdown was place. we ran to the back of the classroom and turned off the
12:08 pm
lights, i was shaking, scared, i didn't have my phone on me and i couldn't communicate with my mom for half an hour, i didn't know what was going to happen because you could hear the gunfire down the hall. luckily i'm here. >> my daughter called me at work. screaming. that there was a shooter at apalachee. and begged me to get there as quick as possible. so, just to start praying. for all the kids. not just my grandson, but all the kids. >> for now let's bring in tom winter. tom, i want to pick where priya left off, she was saying, look, we don't know a lot at this point and in fact there's a lot of rumors flying around the campus and among families and students there, but what do we know? >> right, on top of the sad news
12:09 pm
ultimately that four are dead and nine are injured. we expect that injured number to go up not necessarily because of gunshot victims but students trying to flee in this very emotional moment. so, we do anticipate that. as far as the suspect, they didn't have any identification on them and there's not an immediate indication they have a driver's license, so we're reporting at this time, that in fact this is a teenager, but this might kind of shed a little light as to the specific age that's a pretty wide gamut, 13 to 19 the individual might be, might be younger than 16 years old if they don't have a driver's license. no initial identification that the suspect had on their person. that's a little bit of some information about them. and obviously, whether or not
12:10 pm
they had any sort of tie to the school, some eyewitness testimony that seems to indicate they may have been a student there but that hasn't been confirmed by any sort of official. >> we know that this suspect is alive and in custody, any idea from people you're talking to whether they're talking with him or is he hospitalized. >> undoubtedly they're right to speak with him whether he's hospitalized or not is not something we've been briefed on yet, obviously they would want to speak to him or her with respect to motive, understand what was behind this and how a teenager depending on their age, if they're under the age of 18, i believe in georgia, how they were able to get access to a firearm and bring one into school. those are the types of things they would want to know. the minor could choose not to talk to police, there's that
12:11 pm
complication or problem. they'll try to determine what happened here and how this all came together, but ultimately here we are, kate, start of a new school talking about the same things about, another school shooting in america. >> i hate that we're here as well, tom, you said in your reporting they're not sure whether this person, or suspect, was affiliated with this school yet, is that correct? >> yes. the only information that we have on at this point is information we're getting from some eyewitness interviews. we're talking about minors, putting out a name or information about a particular individual that could be too close to identifying that individual, we're talking about minors that's a concern that we always have here at the nbc news, we want to be careful and
12:12 pm
absolutely certain about the information we're getting from authorities. that's something that we're happy to take our time on, so are they. they want to interview those students outside on that football field, the gbi as well as the local sheriff's department are going to be talking to those kids to see what they said or heard, so that process has been under way the last four, five hours, getting close to being wrapped up. those things will come into play as it pertains as to where this goes from here and by 4:00 eastern time there's another briefing from law enforcement officials that provides us with more answer and that would be 50 minutes from now. we'd bring that to you on this program. tom, thank you. we're thinking about those families, the families of those four people who have died and those injured.
