business. we're live at the scene with more on the firefight underway and the damage left behind. plus, if something like this can happen here, when you think it's a normal day, it could happen anywhere. and that's what really hurts a georgia community grieving after a senseless act of violence. two students and two teachers killed in a mass shooting at a high school. a live report on the victims and the unfolding investigation into the teenage suspect's motive. plus, new help for those struggling to make it in the bay. the all new affordable housing community set to open today in san francisco. this is today in the bay. good morning to you on this thursday, i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike. he's got a look at that morning commute for us. but first let's talk about the forecast. it's been a hot week. kari yes. and it continues today. so we're still going to have a heat advisory in effect. and it has been extended into tomorrow evening. so we have a

couple of more days to deal with this high heat. and then we're going to see those temperatures gradually starting to come back down. but we're also going to continue to see some temperatures in the 80s and 90s even triple digits. we're up to 101 degrees in concord today. vacaville 102, in ukiah, 103 degrees. santa rosa will be in the mid 90s, while san jose will be in the low 90s. taking it into the day tomorro still will be some hot spots and some areas we'll have to watch for that moderate to major heat risk as our temperatures head for the triple digits and some of the inland areas. so i'll be tracking a weekend cooldown in a few minutes. and mike, you're starting with a look at the berkeley curve. yeah. which is not an alarm reason for alarm, folks here about the bay bridge or the approach. and i start with that. there's no issues. just wanted to show you a smooth flow of traffic onto or toward and onto the bay bridge itself. great speed sensor reads throughout the east bay. contra

5:04 am
water up on the rooftop. you see the ladder up there, and they're trying to make sure that the roof is safe enough in order to make entry. you see a lot of the firefighters standing outside, and that's because they had to take a defensive position. it was just too dangerous to go inside to try to battle this fire. now, this is a really busy strip mall. it appears that it's broken up into like three different parts. and the one part in the center is the one that's on fire right now. they're above a billiards business, but there's also a botanica that also went up in flames, cell phone repair, some sort of indian restaurant, it looks like, and several other businesses. to the other side of that, though, there is a supermarket that seems to be unscathed to my right. there's also a different part of the strip mall that also appears to be untouched. but this happened really, really fast. first calls came in just about 345. this morning. so in 45 minutes, that part of the strip mall went up
5:05 am
in flames. firefighters had to pull out and take a defensive position, and now it appears to be out. this is going to have an impact on your morning commute. if you commute around this area, because alum rock avenue, the northbound lanes are closed between north capitol and alexander. so this runs if you're familiar with this area all along the side of calvary cemetery here in alum rock in san jose. kris sanchez today in the bay. yeah, once the sun comes up, it gets busy around that area. thanks for the latest, chris. it is 504 right now developing this morning. one man suffering from life threatening injuries after a shooting last night in san francisco's mission district. this happened a little after 8 p.m. on mission near the 16th street bart station. police not revealing the victim's injuries or what may have led up to the shootings. so far, no arrests have been made. we are keeping our eye on apalachee high school in winder, georgia, just east of atlanta, where classes are canceled for the rest of the

5:18 am
they get it wrong. here's a worked up guy. 25% unrealized capital gains tax. are you reading what's going on and what these bills and tax proposals by kamala harris is? these are insane. now, that proposed tax would only be on people with a net worth of $100 million or more who are not paying 25% or more in income tax, and it wouldn't apply to real estate and it wouldn't apply to small business. but, you know, if you're making 100 or if you have a net worth of 100 million and you're not paying your fair share in taxes, then yeah, i can see why you would oppose this. i don't know anybody like that, but you probably interviewed a few. i probably did here in silicon valley. all right. thanks, scott. well new this morning, the giants locked in their third star baseman in a long term deal. the team announcing last night a six year extension for matt chapman. chapman came up with the oakland a's before the season. inked a free agent deal with the giants, including options for the next

three seasons. the new deal, worth a little more than $150 million, or $25 million per season through 2030. chapman leads the giants this year in categories including home, home runs, rbis and hits. well trending this morning netflix sinking its teeth into an animated adaptation of 2020s midnight sun. yeah, that's the retelling of the first book of the twilight saga from the perspective of edward cullen. so this was all confirmed earlier this year, although the premise was not known until now. so there's no word yet on whether edward and bella's live action counterparts will reprise their roles. twilight fans, of course, are thrilled about this, so the big question is, will we see a whole new fiery debate over whether your team edward or team jacob? it's all revived. remember when that came to divide the newsroom? the newsroom will be divided. you think? no. not really. we'll se. all right, well, you know what? weather wise, not divided so much. we just know it's going to
5:20 am
be hot. yeah. for much of the bay area, it has been hot pretty much the past few days. and we're going to see it continue for today. d tomorrow. but then slightly cooler for the weekend as you're making plans. but next week we're looking at much more seasonable weather with highs in the inland areas in the mid 80s. but we're still talking about 90s and triple digits today. let's head to pittsburgh with a look at how the day will shape up. starting at 63 degrees at 6:00, and then we'll see temperatures warming up into the mid 70s at 10:00. your lunchtime temperature right at about 87 degrees. and then low 90s for 1:00. we're headed for the upper 90s and briefly hitting 100 degrees. the hottest temperature will be at 4:00 this afternoon. and then going into the evening, slowly cooling it back down with a light wind as we take a look at our south bay. high temperatures expected to hit 96 in east san jose and 103 again today in gilroy. much of the east bay will be in the
5:21 am
triple digits, with antioch one of the hotter spots. danville, 185 in oakland and 89 in fremont, will also be 89, in palo alto. daly city, mid 70s today and san francisco in the upper 70s. downtown in the mission district. the outer sunset in the upper 60s for the north bay. look for a high of 96 in santa rosa and 101 in clear lake. so this high pressure is still dominant across the region and will be in control throughout the next couple of days. we're looking ahead to see that if this high pressure can move out of the way, it may allow for an area of low pressure, a storm system and cooler temperatures to come in by the middle of next week. but things may be changing with the heat wave lasting a little bit longer. so we're looking at temperatures in san jose and the low 90s today and tomorrow. and then on saturday it's in the mid 80s. we'll see that on sunday as well. and then possibly low 80s
5:22 am
next week. and we don't see any major spikes in temperatures. but it will be nice to get that cooldown coming in after dealing with day after day of hot weather and blasting the a c, and we may be able to give it a break by the middle of next week. while san francisco sees the return of the cooler weather coming in a lot sooner. mike, you're seeing a hazard in the east bay. yeah, reports of a tire debris, but it's from a big rig. if you've ever seen a big rig, they got big tires there and that may be in lane southbound 880. we see a lot of sudden slowing as you head down toward eighth street. hopefully a quick traffic break at the most will be the issue. then they can clear that from the roadway, but so far chp is arriving. we see the slowdown just off. 238. castro valley is fine, but the bill coming out of the east bay will add to that slowing we do of course, have folks feeding in off of 580 and just behind me. that's where the slowing is out of the altamont. that's pretty standard. the south bay will see some more slowing. right now it's about 522. we should see another 15 minutes before that slowing
5:23 am
starts. but it has just kicked off for highway 37. highway four. little break tap sensors there. back to you. thanks, mike. 522 for you this morning. making healthy choices. next here on today in the bay, we're going to tell you about this new app working to help families make better diet decisions. but first, we're working to clear our shelves and look at this. this morning we're introducing you to mimosa. not the drink a guinea pig available for adoption at the animal community center in milpitas. if you and your family are ready and looking to adopt, we want to invite you to berkeley humane bark and meow around the block. it's an adopt a thon and street fair. they're holding this saturday. marcus and i will be there. it takes place along ninth street in berkeley from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. join us early saturday morning when we'll be on air barking around the park together. woof, woof. we'll be right back

area, but we know that healthy eating amid the added stress can go by the wayside. so there is a new tool. this is aimed at helping families make healthier choices. it is called the go cocoa app, and it's going to allow users to scan the barcodes of more than 600,000 food products at the grocery store, and it rates those foods on a score of one through ten. the healthier it is, the higher the
5:27 am
score. we actually spoke with a registered dietitian who works at go cocoa and she says that even if foods are on the unhealthy side, the app is actually going to help users select better ones. there's a lot of better choices out there than things like cupcakes or cookies. you know, even things that we think might be healthy, like a granola bar or a cereal bar. in those categories, there's a lot of foods that have a ton of added sugar and additives and preservatives. so with our app, you could find the healthiest product within any category. we actually have something called lists, where you can just search by cookie, for example, and find the healthiest cookies that are available on the market. oh, sign me up! all right, so last year, california became the first state in the nation to ban specific additives, including certain dyes. developers say that the app really can help warn families about their presence in foods. well, coming up next, the top stories that we're following for you today, including a woman injured in a racially charged attack in san francisco. ahead, the disturbing

report on the update expected on oakland's 911 response time crisis. the all new announcement city leaders are set to give in a matter of hours. also bracing for more hot temperatures. another hot day ahead for us right here in the bay area. meteorologist kari hall is timing it out for us in her forecast as we inch closer to the weekend and counting down to kickoff, the nfl is back tonight in kansas city. the back to back super bowl champs. the chiefs taking on the baltimore ravens. we're going to take you to arrowhead stadium with more ahead of the big game. this is today in the bay got a mashup of music for you. all right. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. first, carey is tracking those warm temperatures we can expect today. and, kari, how are things looking out there? it's still going to be hot this afternoon, and we're still dealing with the heat advisory that begins again this morning. continues until tomorrow evening. so it has been
5:32 am
extended for these areas shaded in orange. and we're looking at temperatures in the valleys in the 90s over 100 degrees. the bay and the coast not included in that heat advisory as temperatures head for the 70s and low 80s in gilroy. look at how fast it heats up. we're starting out at 55 degrees. nice cool morning getting those outdoor activities before 9:00. and then at 10:00, you're probably closing the windows and trying to keep in that cool air as temperatures outside heat up and will be at 88 degrees at noon. we're headed for the triple digits again there today. and mike, you are looking for a fire in oakland. yeah, one reported off of the nimitz freeway. we're looking at this here coming off the top of the screen, folks. southbound 880 right around high street. reports of that fire that's been in the control center to look around through the area. we didn't see any smoke, and there's no disturbance to the flow. again, 880 around that 66th avenue high street area. i've circled at the bottom of the map. we're looking at the top of the map now, with the
5:33 am
typical slowing for highway 37 and over on the right side, highway four slowing now into pittsburgh and bay point. that's the contra costa county start. now we're starting to see some more movement here off. 238. moving more slowly, getting toward the slowdown for the nimitz, heading south toward a street where there is that disabled big rig, it sounds like it may be stuck in your right lanes, and that is impeding traffic right now. as you head down out of san leandro and in toward hayward. san mateo bridge to the south of that is moving very smoothly in the approach from the south bay moves nicely across both the dumbarton and san mateo bridges. we just start your typical slowing for san jose 101. back to you. thank you very much, mike. 532 right now we do continue to follow some breaking news in san jose. that fire. we've been talking about a large one ripping through a strip mall. this in fact, is a live look along the scene. this is at south alum rock avenue between 680 and capitol avenue. firefighters are still there, but it appears they have gained control of that fire. it all started at about 345 this morning. we know that several
5:34 am
businesses are damaged. roads in that area are shut down as well. today in the bay's kris sanchez is live at the scene. she'll join us with another live report coming up in less than 30 minutes. happening today, oakland mayor sheng thao and city leaders will announce the first major upgrade to the city's 911 dispatch system and two decades now, this is in response to nbc bay area's investigation into slow 911 response times from the antiquated system. today in the bay's thom jensen live for us in the east bay this morning with the latest on that. so, tom, what does this all mean? reporter good morning, marcus. well, the mayor's office says it will have an update this afternoon on those major upgrades. we're waiting to hear what exactly they are and implementation, successful implementation of those upgrades. this all does come after those candice nguyen investigative reports that started last year into those response times. at the 911
5:35 am
system in oakland in march, the city announced it was making improvements to the system on the heels of those reports. but in may or in july, oakland admitted it would only it could not meet the state deadlines to increase the percentage of calls that are answered within 15 seconds, the california office of emergency services said it would help the city meet the deadline, and last month, os said it was increasing monitoring of the system. state funding for local 911 units requires the systems to answer at least 90% of calls within the 15 seconds. it's all not hardware or software issues, though. staffing has also been a problem. they're currently still five unstaffed dispatch positions in the system, and it takes ten months and the time of an experienced 911 operators to train every new dispatcher. and it's a 911 callers who suffer most when they need help fast. in august last year, oakland 911 dispatchers answered just 37% of calls. within that 15 second window, the number improved to
5:36 am
50% by december last year, and up to 55% by this past march. but then it dipped down to 47% in may. the true test will come from that monitoring data by os in the coming months, and whether or not those implementations that the mayor's office is talking about, that they're going to announce later on today are really working. the test will be whether or not they're able to get those 15 second response rate times back up closer to the 90%. the danger is if they don't meet that state mandated requirement, the system could lose state funding for the 911 system. we're live in the east bay. thom jensen today in the bay. and we know how important seconds are when an emergency happens. i mean, seconds do count. all right, tom, thank you. and nbc investigative reporter candice nguyen, she has been following this story from the beginning. you can find more on this story and her past reporting online. just go to nbc bay area.com/investigations in the coming days. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins
5:37 am
is facing a critical decision whether or not to petition to try the juvenile. now accused of shooting ricky pearsall as an adult, he appeared for the first time in juvenile court yesterday. we are blurring the sketches to better shield his identity, the judge ordered him held in custody until trial, and jenkins says he's facing similar charges in san joaquin county. also, the public defender now representing him says he and his family are remorseful given the timeline of this case because the minor was kept in custody. we have a very short, tight timeline for me to make that decision, so i do expect to make it in the coming days. he's very sorry, genuinely, that this did happen, as is his family. and i can say on their behalf as well as on my own behalf that, our thoughts go out to the pearsall family and mr. pearsall himself, the defendant yesterday sat quietly as the judge read the charges aloud. it includes attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic gun and second
5:38 am
degree attempted robbery. the next hearing is set for next tuesday. a san francisco woman recently featured in a popular netflix series is now recovering. this is from a savage weekend attack caught on camera. i want to warn you, the video is disturbing. that video shows the back end of that attack, which ended in a liquor store sunday night on drum street. this is in the city's financial district. wendy drew says that she forced that fight inside so surveillance cameras could actually get a good image of her assailant. she recently appeared on the show you are what you eat. a twin experiment. well, that night, she says that a man she'd never seen before first approached her. and this was after she stepped out of a nearby bar to take a phone call. the skies regan looking guy walks by and he calls me the n word, and i turn around and say, excuse me, why are you calling me that? and he turns around and he comes. i said, what? and then that's when he just starts plowing me, like just starts
5:39 am
hitting, punching me in the hea. wow. so drew showed us some of the disturbing images of the aftermath, saying that she actually followed the suspect outside of and actually screamed until her boyfriend and others came running. they actually held her attacker until police arrived. that suspect is 31 year old san francisco man who is facing multiple charges with hate crime enhancements. 538 right now to a live look at the oakland skyline. a little foggy this thursday morning, but you know what? this sunday thousands will be celebrating oakland pride's 14th annual lgbtq parade and festival. it will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m, and we're hoping for clearing skies at least for sunday. yes, it's going to be great this weekend. no more high heat. look at the trend of our temperatures as we go throughout the weekend. and of course, the big day on sunday. perfect. 75 degrees and sunny and then we'll feel those
5:40 am
temperatures dropping quickly sunday night into the upper 40s. nice weekend there. also for mountain view, the art and wine festival happening saturday and sunday. we'll see a high of 80 degrees on saturday and sunday. just a touch cooler, but still pretty nice and mostly sunny. if you're going to tahoe this weekend, expect temperatures to be pretty warm there. 82 on friday and then upper 70s for saturday and sunday. we're also going to have some cool overnights in in la. it is really hot. take a look at those temperatures. 102 degrees on friday, and it really doesn't get much better going throughout the weekend. so it's been sizzling there as well. we'll take a look at our bay area microclimates and what to expect, but now mike, you're seeing more slowing in contra costa county. yeah some of that for the typical build for highway four, which we expect to see, but also 242 all critical section as folks cut the corner avoiding that highway 4 to 680 southbound. but maybe you want
5:41 am
to watch that corner and maybe take it instead of avoiding it by taking the diagonal. there's a disabled vehicle as well as just the commute starting to build as you head south down in toward pleasant hill, out of concord. so watch for that one delay for folks through the area. meanwhile, the other cut through like kirker pass road to yvr moving very smoothly through that portion of contra costa county. now over here, we'll give you a look ahead. there's a mid day game instead of the evening game. so that's what's going on for the a's over at the coliseum. and that may mean after the game more folks are hitting the roadway about the same time as some folks may be heading past their after work, getting out a little bit earlier, perhaps over in the city. we also have a mid day game for the giants. 1245 game. again, same thing over here as the game gets out. that might affect folks heading out of the city heading toward the bay bridge or perhaps the 280 extension. remember caltrain gets that stop right there by the ballpark. so a great option for you to avoid any future delays. the rest of the bay moves very smoothly, with san jose moving a little slower for 101. and that fire we follow off alhambra back to you. thanks,

mike. all right, laura, are you ready for some football? let's do it. let's do it. all right, so ahead for you here on today in the bay we're going to talk about nfl season returning tonight on nbc. we're live over at arrowhead stadium with a preview of the showdown on the field. let's not forget the giants i still like baseball too okay. there's new battle brewing over the coliseum. the move fans want the a's to make as the team's last home game approaches. and those tickets are sold out. plus, the latest on the race for the white house donald trump saying his team isn't

start out very comfortable with mid 60s. at 10:00 we're in the low 70s and at noon in the low 80s, but we're headed for the low 90s again today. we'll be watching these temperatures gradually trend downward. a look at that in the full microclimate forecast coming up. and we'll watch these lanes more quickly fill up as the backup starts at the bay bridge. once this is on our live shot here, we'll see all these lanes filling in over the next, let's say, 15 minutes without any problems so far on the maze or the berkeley curve. some low clouds creep in, but it's all right for the drivers. thanks so much, kari and mike. it is 5:45 right now, so here we go. the rules for the next presidential debate are set. no studio audience and mikes will be cut off when it's not the

candidate's turn to speak. and scott, look, the whole muted mic thing was created because of donald trump, because of donald trump. i mean, you remember this well, the first time trump debated biden way back in 2020. neither biden nor the moderator, chris wallace, could really get a word in edgewise. finally, biden, you remember, said to trump, will you just shut up, man? it's unpresidential. and that's why we have muted mikes today, like in the most recent debate. the harris campaign actually pushed to get mike trump's mic turn back on during the upcoming debate so that he would interrupt, figuring that would work against him, but in the end, more muted mikes. the debate is next tuesday, hosted by abc reuters says. analysts at goldman sachs have written a report predicting the u.s. economy will do better under kamala harris. more growth, more jobs. previously, economists at the penn wharton budget model had predicted if trump became president, the deficit would rise five times faster than it
5:47 am
would under harris, because trump's tax proposals don't bring in enough money. the penn wharton budget model is a nonpartisan group. trump went to penn, wharton school of business, by the way. trump spoke last night on a town hall about on fox about his pick for vice president taking issue with the democrats, calling j.d. vance weird. he's not weird, said trump. tim walz is weird. he walks weird. he says there's something there's something weird with that guy. he's a weird guy. j.d. is not weird. he's a solid rock. i happen to be a very solid rock. we're not weird. we're other things. perhaps, but we're not weird. but he is a weird guy. he walks onto stage as something wrong with that guy, and he called me weird. and then the fake news media picks it up. that was the word of the day. weird, weird, weird. they're all going. earlier this week, john mccain's youngest son endorsed kamala harris. even though the mccains

are longtime republicans. last night, another republican ultra conservative, liz cheney, said this. as a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the constitution, i have thought deeply about this and because of the danger that that donald trump poses, not only am i not voting for donald trump, but i will be voting for kamala harris in this election. now, trump will say that cheney is a turncoat, a rhino. he would say. he does say that because cheney served on the january 6th investigation. but cheney at one point was the third highest republican in house leadership. and, of course, her dad was the republican vice president. here's dick cheney saying pretty much the same thing about trump a few years ago in our nation's 246 year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than donald trump. he tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep
5:49 am
himself in power. after the voters had rejected him. he is a coward. vice president harris governor walz will be back in pennsylvania. president biden heads to wisconsin. jd vance to arizona. now, the only candidate who will not be in a battleground state is former president trump. marcus. he'll be in new york city. all right. thanks so much, scott. okay. so let's talk about some baseball as the saying goes, it ain't over till it's over. but for some of those oakland a's fans, they're really just hoping to actually be there to see it happen. on september 26th, the a's played their final game in oakland. it's already a sold out game, and fans still without tickets are now asking the to team open a huge section of those seats above the outfield. this is still sort of lovingly known as mount davis. some of those diehards recently wrote a letter over to the team to try to make that happen. fans are even offering to clean up the seldomly used section with volunteers already offering to clean it and move things around if needed. the team is not responding to our requests that

we made last night. all right, from baseball to football, let's talk about it tonight. the nfl season kicks off right here on nbc. and you know everyone's first round draft pick secured at this point. and there is a lot at stake. here we go. the game kicks off at the home of the super bowl champion kansas city chiefs. and today in the bay's jay gray joins us live from arrowhead stadium. this morning. so much hype surrounding this opening night. but it looks like you're more so ready for the tailgate. laura marcus never too early to start a tailgate right? so yeah, we've been digging into the chips a little bit here. i got to tell you, there are dozens of people. they've been camping. we came in at two this morning. they've been sleeping in their cars waiting to get into arrowhead stadium here. chiefs kingdom, they call it. there's just something special about the start of the nfl season right now. guys, practice is over. and now for the chiefs and the

ravens. it's finally game day. i'm ready to go. i've been going against my guys for weeks. you know it's time to go get some one else that someone else is. the two time super bowl champion kansas city chiefs i'm excited man i'm excited. get to play another year of football and fresh slate. you know get to get to kind of prove to ourselves and the chiefs kingdom that that we're one of the top dogs we can fans in kc don't need much convincing a city awash in red and gold and an unflagging support for their champs streets lined with banners, buildings wrapped in the teams logo and the chiefs faithful lining up for new gear to start a season many think will end with a super bowl three peat, something that's never been done in the history of the nfl. i feel like it is probably the best chance of any team that they could, because i feel like mahomes and kelce and reid, they all are pretty determined. determination

that those who played the game say, comes with a different kind of energy and excitement. on opening night, you're going to be nervous, you're going to be anxious, but it's like a fun time knowing that you're the only game on and the only place you'll see it is right here on nbc. yeah, the game is going to be great and all that, but let's get to what's really important here. carey mike. marcus. laura, i know you're wondering, will travis kelce's girlfriend, be here? no confirmation yet. we do know that taylor swift has a break in her concert schedule, right now, so she could likely beat a bunch of games as we start this season, here's something to ponder for a second. she was at 13 of his games last year. we all know 13 is, of course, tate's favorite number. everybody knows that he was at 13 of her concerts during the international eras tour 13. they're meant to be guys. it's
5:53 am
an unbelievable coincidence, both at 13 of the other's performances. no, i think it's going to be a lot of fun. and yeah, i would expect that she'll be here. we'll see some great football and probably some gratuitous shots of taylor swift in the luxury box. yeah. no doubt. 1313 we got to get jj this is mike. we got to get you out here. we have to exchange friendship bracelets with you. yeah, we'll start making them now. i'm. i'm ready. hey, we're doing this next year. they're they're going to win next year. and we're going to be out there doing this. that's what i'm talking about. that's what we bring the food to. jay yes. he's going to dig into those twizzlers right now. all right. thanks, jay. you can catch all the action right here on nbc bay area. and also streaming on peacock. pregame coverage starts at 4:00 tonight. and what about our niners? they are kicking off their season against the new york jets at home on monday night. we're counting down to
5:54 am
kick off with the help of the gold rush cheerleaders. they're going to join us live on set at 8 a.m. that's in our streaming newscast. you can catch it live on roku, pluto and other streaming platforms, including nbcbayarea.com. here we go. talking football already in the heat of the summer. i know that means i can't make any more weekend plans for a very long time. all right, we're under a microclimate weather alert. we've been talking about the heat and watching the football game this evening and some air conditioning. it will be 101 degrees in concord and 96 degrees in santa rosa. while mountain view will hit a high of 88 degrees. let's take it to tomorrow because it drops a couple of degrees for some spots. we're making some progress here. it's been so hot and we're still going to have some hot spots like concord up to 98 and fairfield 100 degrees tomorrow. let's take it to saturday. it comes down even more. we'll be in the low 90s for livermore, 93, in morgan
5:55 am
hill and mid 80s for much of the north bay. so we are going to see those temperatures coming down as the high pressure slides off towards the south. it's going to reinforce our ocean breeze, but unfortunately it's going to hold this storm system out over the pacific. and we're not going to see this coming into the northwest any time soon. so as we take a look at fairfield, we are still going to see those temperatures coming down. we're going from 101 today to upper seconds and low 90s throughout the weekend. and more of those temperatures into next week, with no major spikes in temperatures. and our 7-day forecast shows a much more comfortable weekend and extending into next week. but we do still have at least 2 or 3 more days of some hot 90s and triple digits in the inland areas, while san francisco will see highs in the 70s for today through saturday. and then we're back to the 60s for much of next week. now, mike, you have a traffic alert. yeah, it's the same issue that happened a while ago southbound out of san leandro into hayward. just shy

of a street around hacienda that disabled big rig and perhaps a crash in the area blocking your two right lanes. things are really starting to gum up with the build coming off the castro valley y. this is the unusually slow area because of that incident. everything else is pretty standard, including this build through contra costa county. 242 hold steady the disabled vehicle not having as much impact on that. back to you. thanks mike. well happening now your pg&e bills could be. going up yet again in one week. the california public utilities commission will vote on another proposed increase. now, if approved, your bill could jump by another $6 a month. this is for the end of the year. the utility says that it needs the money to help recoup more than $900 million spent during the winter storms between late 2022 and early last year. pg&e filed for a rate hike back in january. it is certainly a busy morning here on today in the bay ahead at 6:00. we are tracking that breaking news out of the south bay, where crews have been battling a strip mall fire.

a strip mall. we just heard from deputy fire chief. we are live there at the scene with an update and a first look at that damage. now, as the sun is coming up and we can still hear like the screaming and shooting outside, and it's just scary. a georgia community grieving after a senseless act of violence. two students and two teachers killed in a high school mass shooting. the new details being revealed about the suspect's past threat. plus, another scorching day across the bay area. but some relief is on the way for tracking when cooler temperatures are set to return. this is today in the bay. good morning to you on this thursday.
