chiefs versus ravens. we have craig live at arrowhead stadium. mike tirico will join? a little bit. i think everybody is ready for the fall and some football fun. >> we sure are. but let us get started right now, guys, with our top story. the nation mourning two students and two teachers at apalachee high school about an hour northeast of atlanta. they were killed in a shooting just days into the new school year. >> and here they are. their names were released by investigators overnight. and two teachers, richard and christina. >> authorities have also identified the accused shooter, 14-year-old student. and he is set to be tried as an adult. the georgia bureau of investigation now saying he was investigated last year for online threats to commit school shootings. so, in a moment, we will hear from a student who was there when the shooting unfolded along with her mom. but we're going to begin with

nbc's priya sridhar with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. the school remains closed for the rest of the week, as authorities continue to conduct interviews with the suspect, his family and eyewitnesses. so many students telling me they have been through active shooter drills so many times, but this time it was real, and now we're learning that law enforcement actually knew of this suspect. they questioned him just last year after several violent threats were made online. overnight, the city of winder, georgia, in mourning. the scene of terror unfolding wednesday at apalachee high school, where a shooter left four victims dead. >> still kind of in a state of shock. >> reporter: now information emerging about the suspect, colt gray. 14-year-old. in a statement, the fbi says it received several anonymous tips about an online threat to commit a school shooting last year. >> the jackson county sheriff's

office identified and located gray, who is our suspect in this case. they conducted an investigation at that time and there was no probable cause for arrest or to take any additional law enforcement action. >> reporter: the fbi saying that at the time the suspect's father was interviewed and said he had hunting guns in the house, but the subject did not have unsupervised access to them. police say gray, who's a student at the school, used an ar platform style weapon. in georgia, according to the gifford's law center, there are no minimum age laws restricting people under 18 from possessing rifle's or shotguns. though, federal law is stricter. according to authorities, the teen will be charged with murder and tried as an adult. the community still reeling from the traumatic morning at the school. evacuated students sent to the school's football field. >> pray for these kids. >> reporter: where terrified parents desperately searched for their children. >> this is a parent's worst

nightmare. >> reporter: the victim's including two 14-year-old students, maison and. he was autistic, later writing he did not make it out of school alive. also, killed, two math teachers, 53-year-old christina irimie and 39-year-old richard aspinwall, also a football coach. eight students and a teacher were injured. the local sheriff, emotional. >> my heart hurts for these kids. my heart hurts for our community. but i want to make it very clear that hate will not prevail. >> reporter: according to the k through 12 school shooting data base, there have been 218 school shootings just this year. president biden calling for gun safety legislation, saying in a statement, we cannot continue to accept this as normal. hoda? >> all right, thank you so much.

with us now, sophomore at apalachee high, she was inside that building when the shooting unfolded. she is joining us alongside her mother tab that. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> ariel, how are you doing this morning after everything you've been through and everything you witnessed, how are you doing? >> i'm trying to hold up myself. just still like really in shock of processing everything that happened yesterday. and it's just like a lot. >> yeah. it had to be completely terrifying. will you tell us where you were? i understand that you were actually leaving a nearby classroom to go with a friend to a vending machine. what happened? >> yes, ma'am. so, me and my friend were going to the vending machine. and we had, like, gotten half way out of the room. and there's like a brick wall. so like you can't really see who's out in the hall.

and then we heard shots fired. and we ran back into the room. and we went to the corner. >> you must have been absolutely terrified in those moments. what was going through your mind? and when you were finally got the message that it was all clear and you walked out, what did you see? >> i saw a deceased body on the floor, but it was covered up. and i saw a female with a shot wound to her leg. and it was just like really traumatic experience. >> tabatha, i'm looking at you and i'm thinking what you must be thinking and feeling. first of all, to understand that there's a shooting going on at your daughter's school. how did you learn the news and just tell us what you did. >> i was at work. ariel called me on the phone and told me, mom, there's an active

shooting at school. and i told her, it's nothing to play about. is this serious? and she said, mom, it's serious. it's really going on. i told her to just run into the classroom and hide in the corner, just be quiet and do whatever they tell her to do. and at that time, i heard five gunshots and then the phone went dead. so i didn't know if she was hurt. and she was calling 911. so i was very scared. >> it's just unfathomable, no matter how many times we've seen this unfold when it happens to you. and ariel, one of the teachers who was killed yesterday is a teacher you had, he was your math teacher. what do you remember about him? what would you want people to know about him? >> i would just want people to know that he was a really kind-hearted man, and he was like, really push you and

like -- he was just really hard-working and he just had the most kindest soul ever. >> ariel, you guys have gone through drills, like a lot of schools do, just in case of a school shooter. and you probably never really imagined that something like that would happen. as you woke up this morning, what were you thinking about the state of how we live now. what reality is actually like for kids like you? >> i just feel like you're basically never safe anywhere. and no matter like how you can like -- no matter if there's like cops in the school, there's still no safety. >> tabatha, you just heard your daughter say, no matter what, whether there are police resource officers, armed in school, you're not safe anyway. how does that sit with you?

>> that's very traumatic for me, because now how can i ever get her to go to school? she told me she's never coming back here. i just don't know what to do. it's scary. and i'm thankful that she did have her phone so that i could know that she was in the situation, but i don't like that she hung up on me, but i do like what she did do to help everyone else. >> ariel, you were thinking of others right there in that very moment. that must have been so terrifying for you. thank you for being with us. we're so sorry for what you had to go through and our hearts are with you in these days ahead. >> of course. no matter how many times we do conversations like that, it's just so hard -- to say nothing of the people who lost their lives, just how lives are changed in an instant. >> and to think about how she's saying she doesn't want to go back to school. and no matter how many police officers were there, she still

doesn't feel safe. i mean, something needs to be done. something needs to be done. all right. let us now turn to the race for the white house. with their first and potentially only debate now just five days away.ys away. vice president harris, former president trump have finally agreed to the rules of that critical showdown. meantime, harris just picked up a high-profile republican endorsement. nbc's chief white house correspondent peter alexander is covering it all for us. hey, peter, good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. as evidenced by that biden/trump debate earlier this summer, these showdowns can be consequential, and even before he and vice president harris take the stage next week, former president trump is returning to a familiar playbook, trashing the debate rules as rigged against him, even though the harris campaign has relented now and the mics will be muted when it is not a candidate's turn to speak. and as you note this comes as the harris/walz ticket is touting that new high-profile republican supporter this morning. overnight, vice president harris picking up a new endorsement from a top conservative critic of former president trump, former republican congresswoman

liz cheney. the one-time vice chair of the house january 6th committee. >> because of the danger that donald trump poses, not only am i not voting for donald trump, but i will be voting for kamala harris. >> reporter: mr. trump's running mate, j.d. vance, firing back at cheney overnight. >> kamala harris and liz cheney make very, very interesting partners. they get rich when america's sons and daughters go off to die. they get rich when america loses wars instead of winning wars. >> reporter: while in pennsylvania, mr. trump appeared on fox news, falsely claiming -- that harris has been given the questions to next week's debates while repeatedly slamming her. >> this is a woman who is dangerous. i don't think too smart, but let's see. but she loses her train of thought a lot. >> reporter: two harris campaign aides tell nbc news the campaign agreed to allow both candidates' microphones to be muted when it's not their turn to speak, similar to the trump/biden debate.

the vice president plans to hold another round of debate prep today, after campaigning in new hampshire, where in a rare break with president biden, she ro posed a lower capital gains tax rate, than he proposed to help spur the creation of small businesses. >> compare that to what donald trump plans. he plans to give billionaires massive tax cuts and cut corporate taxes by over $1 trillion, even as they pull in record profits. >> reporter: while the race remains remarkably tight, harris is leading mr. trump in polls of several key battleground states, include wisconsin, michigan, georgia, and nevada, though her lead is within the margin of error. the two were tied in pennsylvania, perhaps the most important state of all. and mr. trump leads harris in arizona, also within the margin of error. for his part, mr. trump is also facing a key hearing today in the criminal case where he is accused of trying to overturn the last election. lawyers for both sides will present their arguments before

the judge here in washington and she could announce the schedule for this case going forward. today's hearing, as you know, comes two months after the supreme court's decision granting mr. trump broad immunity for official acts. as president, he has pleaded not guilty to the charges brought by the special counsel. hoda? >> peter alexander for us there at the white house. thank you. another major story this morning. the war in the middle east. israeli forces carrying out more air strikes in the west bank overnight, while new protests rage across israel. israeli protesters calling for a cease-fire and the release of remaining hostages from hamas. now the u.s. is considering a new approach to bring american hostages home. nbc's raf sanchez joins us from tel aviv with the latest. raf, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. nearly 11 months into this war, cease-fire negotiations appear badly stalled. the white house says one sticking point is which

palestinian prisoners would be released in exchange for those israeli hostages, but another is what u.s. officials increasingly s see as prime minister netanyahu's unwillingness to make a deal. this morning, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu under mounting pressure. from protesters on the streets demanding he make concessions to reach a hostage deal and from an increasingly frustrated biden administration. five sources tell nbc news the u.s. is considering a direct deal with hamas to free the remaining american hostages. the u.s. has not made a formal offer, but sources say the white house is losing faith netanyahu will make an agreement. >> this is the philadelphia corridor. >> reporter: the israeli leader says he wants the hostages home, but will not withdraw troops from the egypt/gaza border, known as the philadelphi corridor. wrmplt. >> gaza must be demilitarized.

it can only do if philadelphi remains under control. >> reporter: his position on the corridor is a major part of the stalemate in cease-fire talks and some of the families of the six hostages killed by hamas last week said it led to their deaths. the idf releasing video of the tunnel where it says they were killed. 27-year-old amog sarusi was the first to be buried. his mother giving an agonized eulogy. >> reporter: the mother of almong viewsy says you sacrificed her son. is that a price you are prepared to pay and is that a price the people of israel will accept? >> i can understand the great torment that the mother of this murdered hostage feels. i'm committed to getting all of them out. >> reporter: neither the prime minister nor the protesters

backing down. and we're following a shooting near the israeli consulate in the german city of munich earlier. police there say the shooter was killed. not clear at this point if the consulate was the target, but this comes on the anniversary of the 1972 munich massacre, when 11 israeli olympians were killed by palestinian terrorists. savannah? >> raf sanchez in tel aviv, thank you. meanwhile, president putin is making headlines with new comments overnight on his war against ukraine and the presidential election here in the u.s. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in ukraine. he's got that story. hey, richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. yes, vladimir putin is weighing in on the u.s. elections, saying that now he prefers vice president harris, but it could be an attempt at misdirection, as once again the kremlin is facing accusations that it is

trying to meddle in american politics. president putin said this morning that president biden was his first choice for a second term, but that now, he'd like vice president harris to become the next american president. her laugh is so expressive and infectious, putin said at an economic conference. but is the former spy telling the truth? u.s. intelligence agencies believe that putin prefers donald trump over harris, seeing him as less likely to continue supporting ukraine and washington believes putin is already trying to influence the election. on wednesday, the state department said it would designate five russian state-funded news organizations, including rt, formally known as "russia today," and "sputnik" as foreign government missions and limit visas for their employees. the justice and treasury departments are acting as well, indicting two rt employees accused of funding an american right-wing media company to carry out the kremlin's

some marcus washington. well, breaking news this morning. a three alarm fire ripping through a san jose strip mall. kris sanchez is live for us this morning out there with that update. kris. hi there marcus. we are going on hour four right now that the firefighters have been working the scene here along alum rock avenue, across from calvary cemetery. you see the firefighters still up on ladders. just a few moments ago, we were listening to chainsaws. they are trying to make holes in the roof to access any fire that might still be inside. they're also trying to stabilize that facade there. that's the reason why firefighters had to take a defensive position out here and fight the fire from the outside, because that awning, there was a collapse risk. now, firefighters say that eight businesses were impacted. they've been going into several of the businesses. we talked with. one of the business owners who said it was very frustrating to watch the firefighters fight the fire from outside. but as the deputy chief told us, it was the safest way to do that. we'll bring you the

game. rematch of the, a fc championship game. craig mentioned that in the piece a moment ago, and it was a terrific game, 17-10. kansas city got out to an early lead. when you look at this kansas city team, they've got all the big pieces back. although a couple of changes, including some speed at wide receiver. baltimore, savannah, we saw them last night, met with the ravens when they got the town. there's a focus, there's an edge. they're not going to make up for the disappointment of missing out on a shot at the super bowl, but i think they want to make the first statement of this season that they're ready to get back to a place they can compete with the chiefs to get to the super bowl yet again. >> mahomes taking the chiefs to the super bowl three times in the last five seasons, back-to-back. how hard would a three-peat be? >> reporter: it's super hard. they've only been now nine teams to win back-to-back super bowls. nobody has ever won three straight super bowls. craig mentioned before, it's the 105th nfl season. twice, the green bay packers did, late 20s, and the mid-60s. it's been most of our lifetime. since a team has won three in a row. it's hard to keep the team together. that's why it's so hard to

home from the international space station. however, they're doing that without the astronauts, butch wilmore and suni williams. they left for a ten-day mission back in june. now their not going to come home until february. nbc's tom costello covers space for us. hey, tom, good morning. >> good morning. day 92 now for these two. mission managers have been reprogramming the ship's computers for a return to earth without williams and wilmore, who will close the hatch between "starliner" and the space station later today. the ship will then undock at about 6:00 p.m. eastern time tomorrow, controlled by mission control, as they aim for a touchdown in new mexico just after about midnight eastern time. nasa engineers remain concerned that the engine thruster problems could reappear as "starliner" reenters the earth's atmosphere. boeing insists the ship is safe for return, but nasa simply does not want to take any chances that could put the crew at risk.

so the astronauts will remain on the station until february, returning with the crew of spacex, a spacex ship, i should say, and spacex's boeing archrival. but listen, mission managers insist, the crew is not stuck. since they could return in "starliner" or different spacex ship, if the space station were in danger. take a listen. >> in my view, they're never stuck or stranded. they always had a way to depart the space station. to me, when somebody is stranded, there's a location where they cannot leave. they had "starliner" as the vehicle that they could depart from, for a period of time. >> well, they're going to be on the station for a lot longer. and that spacex crew nine ship will head to the station with just two astronauts rather than four. that will be later this month. williams and wilmore will then take the open seats on that ship in february. in the meantime, they'll be helping with maintenance and science experiments on the space
