nuguse wide receiver brandon aiyuk ending a contentious holdout by signing a four year, $120 million extension. 76 of which guaranteed left tackle trent williams at 30, a three year, $82 million restructure includes $48 million guaranteed. let's first hear from brandon aiyuk. i think i just had a i just had a feel for what i wanted, not just in terms of money, but in all those things that you said. and ultimately, i wanted to be here. and i ended up being here. so i'm happy, i'm good, i'm happy. i'm ready to go. i'm not going to lie, i made it a little bit more difficult than it needed to at the end. but yeah, it was. i mean, it was it was like that from from i'm not going to say the whole entire time, but for about the past month, i think we were we were pretty good. all right. i'm not going to lie either. there was some bad blood there at the end. matt maiocco any residuals? is it all water behind them? where is it now? i think it's

fine. yeah. i mean, all that stuff is in the past now. it's what he can do on the field. and so moving forward, you know, you know it was rough while they were going through it. but now everybody's pulling in the same direction. he is tied for the fifth highest receiver. so that's what he wanted at his position. what does it mean greg papa getting him back on the field. well he's going to play obviously on monday night against the new york jets. he's going to be your starting wide receiver. it was one week ago tonight that he agreed to terms. went to the san jose state game on the sideline that night and then went in and signed his contract on friday. and things got crazy with ricky pearsall on saturday the next day. but he was on the on the field for a bonus practice on tuesday. i saw him today. he's going to be your starting x wide receiver. deebo will be the z and jauan jennings will be back to play in the slot, but how many snaps can he play against the jets? typically he plays like 98% of the snaps. i think it'd be ambitious if he plays 80% of the snaps. all right. meanwhile, trent williams, less contentious back,

ready to play. it took time to make to get to where both sides feel like we've, it's a win win. and so, you know, we had discussions in minicamp and kind of knew that it could draw out a little bit just because there was other people on the table that, you know, obviously was a lot of pressing needs. so you know, i didn't i didn't obviously i didn't i didn't think it would go this long, but for lack of a better word, it's kind of war with both sides going to lose a little blood. but you know, waved the white flag. get. in the end, we both signed a little peace treaty, and we're good. laughs tom brady said this week he if he were the niners or any player, he'd drive him to practice and make sure that he was hanging around and safe at all times. how important, matt, to get 71 back. yeah, first off, he has to have a big car to drive him to practice electric roles. by the way, trent has an electric

rolls-royce. how about that? that's his own driver. that's just tidbits you don't get anywhere else. yeah, it's absolutely huge. i mean, as big of a deal is it to get brandon aiyuk back on the team? i mean, the drop off from trent williams to the next offensive tackle on the 49ers is significant. it's huge. so he is not a quote unquote skill player, but he might as well be. that's how important he is to the 49ers offense. pop. he's the highest paid left tackle in the game. he is the third highest paid offensive lineman in the game. he has made more money in the nfl than any non-quarterback in history, not just offensive linemen. so he's made a lot of money. he's a great player. joe staley here, when we watched him play, you thought future hall of famer, you put on the tape for literally ten plays with trent and you thought, this guy is the best offensive lineman the niners have ever had. aiyuk will not be able to play 100% of the snaps on monday. trent does not have that luxury at left tackle. he'll be out there for the whole night, but good to have him back and the comments that he made watching and hearing from his teammates. what happened to ricky pearsall on saturday was
9:15 pm
kind of the impetus that last driving force to get him to come back and be the leader of this team that he is. well, you mentioned that. so last saturday, a very special, scary moment that happened right here in san francisco when 49ers wide receiver ricky pearsall was shot in the chest in an attempted robbery. amazingly the bullet did not hit any vital organs. he was released the next day. he'll miss at least the first week of the four weeks of the season, but he's going to be back and count john lynch among the people who was very relieved and counting his blessings. you know, by the grace of god, ricky pearsall is here with the team and doing really well and just wanted to address that situation from a team perspective, we just all feel incredibly blessed, you know, was able to be down at the hospital and if i heard it from one person, i, i heard it from. so many down there, it was nothing short of miraculous that
9:16 pm
he came out of this as good as he did at the time of all this going on. we had a team party that was scheduled, when i got to the hospital and visited with ricky, it was one of the first things he said, mr. lynch, what's going on? you know, i would really like everyone to go to that party, and i'd also like to talk to some of my teammates. i said, ricky, you take care of yourself. but, you know, kind of a cool moment. we were able to pipe ricky into the party and he facetimed the entire group and that show of love and respect was was a real special moment for our team. now, you've covered this team a long time. that's one of the wildest stories i've heard. yeah, i mean, it was just heart wrenching there in the beginning until you found out that he was going to be okay. and you know, it's funny. i mean, he this guy is all about football. and you see him out there, that's that's him today on the practice field, you can tell he's fidgety. he wants to get out there. and he even told kyle shanahan that,
9:17 pm
hey, i think i can play versus the jets. and of course as you mentioned he's out for the first four games of the season on the reserve non football injury lis. but yeah the 49ers still expect him to get out there on the field and start, you know paying some dividends as the number one or the you know first round draft pick. number 31 overall. yeah. papa. how much will he get used when healthy. oh a lot i think he would have played in this game against the jets. he's had a problem with a with a shoulder partially dislocating periodically and a hamstring injury earlier. but he was rounding back into form. he's a tough guy obviously to overcome all these injuries. but i actually spoke to him briefly today at practice. he watched his entire team practice today. he's a good teammate. those guys love him in the locker room. and i think it's, you know, the whole iuka angst anxiety of august and trent williams. matt, you know the media made a big deal about that. i think it's you don't want anybody getting shot obviously. but things like this do galvanize a football team in a different way. you know, trent was talking about i hardly knew the guy, but i wanted to come back. and the way
9:18 pm
he's conducted himself as a rookie, the way he's handled himself, as john lynch was saying, saying you know, you guys have the party on saturday at kyle's house. he always has it. the saturday of labor day to celebrate the 53 man roster. let me facetime the guys. then he shows up in the building a couple of days later. he's ther. he's going to play. he's going to miss the first four games because they put him on the non-football injury list. matt but he may play week five. and one of the things about that party was that, you know, some of the his teammates told me that they could tell by his expression how much it meant to him to see his teammates. and then also the mood of the party, you know, the when people came to kyle shanahan's house for that party, he tried to reassure everybody he's going to be fine. but it wasn't until they saw him and were able to connect with him and talk with him that everybody felt really good about that kind of team bonding exercise that they had, and a sense of relief. we'll take a break. super bowl hangovers. how real are they? what are the 49ers expectations? and we'll look ahead to the new york jets. and papa, miyoko and i continue

9:22 pm
talking about the physical toll it takes to go deep into the playoffs. when you think about the emotional and, you know, the losing the super bowl, especially in the heartbreaking fashion they did it. but the thing that the 49ers have is they have great leadership throughout the roster. on offense and defense. so they have a talented roster, good coaching staff, if any team can do it, the 49ers are in a position where they can do that. you wonder how history has treated the super bowl runner ups. three of the last four have had winning records. the only exception the 49ers who in 2020 finished six and ten after losing to the chiefs in super bowl 54. papa bear, you know this team as well as anybody. what are the realistic expectations this season? well this is a super bowl roster. i could make the point that brock is going to be better now in his second full year and his third year. i like the depth on the d line, but john lynch had the line. matt, the other day. every year is a new year, and we felt

that same way going into the 2020 year, and we had a global pandemic that happens once a century. shut the league down. everybody was tearing their acls and it got ugly. but it wasn't just losing the super bowl and had they won the super bowl last year, jauan jennings may have been the most valuable player of the super bowl. they lost the super bowl in overtime when they scored first in the overtime. that's never happened in the history of the nfl. on top of that, you lost the championship game the year before in philly when your quarterback at his elbow pulled off. the year before that, you lost to the rams in the championship game in la. when you went to the fourth quarter of that game with a ten point lead, and then the ultimate loss, you know, maybe the i don't know which one is a more difficult one. the super bowl 58 was probably because you went to overtime, but super bowl 54 against the chiefs, they had a ten point lead 20 to 10 with 713 to play. and they run the wasp play. you know the one thing in the game the night was amazing wasn't it. the baltimore kansas city game and the niners won the super bowl last february in vegas. we'd be at levi's

interviews with oakland police. they told us the account is now closed and communication was affected, and there was never any intention to mislead the public. but the department never explained why it kept offering rewards. so we caught up with opd's new police chief, floyd mitchell, at a public safety event. candice went with nbc bay area. are you aware that opd continued to advertise crime stopper awards after finding out that there was no money available? don't you think the tipster deserves an explanation? the public. this tipster says sadly, he doesn't trust law enforcement anymore, and if he comes across another crime in oakland and an advertisement for a crime stoppers award, i'm keeping scrolling. like at that point, it's like, do i even care? and to lose this public trust, this tool to solve cases, carter says, is an insult to the community. this is huge trouble, and they need to fix it now. carter says if he were advising opd and oakland crime stoppers,

spots rather than picking their own. so if groups don't arrive together, they could end up far apart. joe ilona is the founder of the niner empire and started a petition on its website to try to change the changes. it's just wrecking everything, you know. it's definitely going to hurt the experience because the tradition of football is tailgating as well. avid tailgater ray pena was picked by the 40 niners as the fan of the year in 2022, but he says he wonders if the 49ers really appreciate them. we pride ourselves on our tailgates. we show up hours before a tailgate just to get in line and to have this spot to set up so that our loved ones, when they do show up, regardless of traffic and tailgate with us. 49ers moorpark is also a well-known dedicated tailgater and has literally a house full of team memorabilia to show his devotion. he says he hopes the team will reconsider, saying the tailgate parties are

safe. family get togethers. tailgating is a way that family comes together and the faithful are family and i have a lot of family out there in those tailgates that that's what we look forward to. of course, we love the players, of course we love the team and we love the game. but, you know, we go, we get fired up and we get wound up and we get ready to go by going to the tailgates. well, the 40 niners say the changes are to create more parking space. and in a statement sent to us, they say that safety is our top priority. and while we want to ensure all guests are able to enjoy themselves, tailgating guidelines are in place to protect the safety of all guests and staff. live in santa clara robert honda, nbc bay area news. all right, robert, thank you. and that's one of the things you don't want to miss. mess with the tailgate. but there are some changes there. you know what messes with tailgating when it's 100 degrees? the weather. put it on me. yeah, well, that's what

messes with the good things. tomorrow is friday, and then we need a monday night football. okay. all right. saturday and sunday is going to look good for your weekend. then as we head through next week, i think we're going to get into some much more comfortable weather out here across the bay area. i'm also tracking some rain chances in the next seven days. let's go ahead and take a look at that microclimate forecast, and i'll show you what's changing it up for us. beginning tomorrow, when it's this area of low pressure just off the coastline, it's going to bring in some slightly cooler air. also keep fog at the coastline. so numbers tomorrow drop a couple degrees, then more marked changes by saturday and also on sunday. we also have this area of high pressure over the desert southwest that's going to pull up some tropical moisture. right now it looks like the best chances of thunderstorms, though would remain over the sierra. and to the south of us. we'll keep a close watch on it here as we head through tomorrow with our radar. as we move through tomorrow morning's forecast. pretty typical here for september. we're back with some fog to start, not only at the coastline, but through the bay. some of those low clouds right up towards the north bay then

most of this clears back as we head through the afternoon. so that's going to ensure that temperatures start off pretty comfortable here with that foggy breeze. lots of 50s and 60s that will put us down to 64 here in the south bay over to san francisco, and the north bay could need a light jacket there with temps in the 50s as we head through the afternoon, more 80s and 90s than 100. so we're down a couple degrees tomorrow. i think it's going to be better for you. 90 here in san jose over to the east bay, 80 in oakland. then get out here to walnut creek, 98 antioch, 100 coastal areas in the 60s and then redwood city 86, san francisco 76. in the mission up towards the marina 65. and for the north bay napa at 94. so temps drop another 5 to 10 degrees by this weekend. but let's fast forward it into next week. i've been telling you about the chance of maybe some rainfall. the system is offshore by next tuesday. it breaks up by the time it gets here. but some rain just outside of the bay area by next wednesday. if anything, just exciting to see

the governor is turning to ai companies for some solutions for homelessness. here's our business and tech reporter scott budman. homelessness is a huge problem in california, a state that already spends billions of dollars a year to try and get people off the street. now the governor and a bay area ceo, hope ai, can help find answers where others have failed. i definitely has the potential to help solve this issue. and you know, in silicon valley, for the longest time, we've said, let's move fast and break things. but i think in this instance we can move fast to fix things. the idea actually comes from governor gavin newsom, who, without specifics, says he'll seek help from ai companies to fight homelessness. angela hoover says her san francisco based company is up to the challenge. a lot of what i can come and kind of step in is the data driven prevention and

intervention, with with predicting homelessness and actually helping folks before they get to that point. but is machine learning enough? homelessness is not a situation that can be fixed by technology. at least one homeless advocate says technology can make finding more housing more efficient. but the robots are not building housing. they're not building shelter. and, it you know, we that's really where the energy needs to be put. we need permanent funding sources. tech industry could help with that. governor newsom says his plan is to eventually use ai to better bring shelter and services to people who need it. he says his next step will be to reach out to ai companies for proposals on how to make that happen. scott budman, nbc bay area news. scott. thank you. we don't need ai for this story. no, we like food. fancy food like your type
