life. two law enforcement sources tell nbc news that colt gray's father collin, gave his underage son a ar-15-style rifle as a present. this was after authorities had interviewed the father and son last year in connection with threats to carry out a school shooting. authorities have now arrested collin gray, charging him with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second degree murder and eight counts of child cruelty. we have more on the fallout from america's latest school shooting. >> reporter: mourners arefer at the apalachee high school flagpole, adding flowers and balloons to the impromptu memorial, one day after violence erupted at the school. >> and then we heard shots fired, and we ran back into the room. and we just all piled up on top of each other in the corner. >> reporter: investigators say a student opened fire with what authorities call ar-style weapon. two students, mason schermerhorn

and christian angulo, both 14, were killed, as well as two teachers. >> those teachers were heroes. i want that to be known. >> reporter: authorities say teachers quickly called police with their i.d. cards. >> they have a button on that i.d., and they pressed it so many times. it alerts it where incident is occurring. we got multiple notifications as the shooting was going on from the teachers, where to respond to that area, it also locks down the school screens. >> reporter: the shooter, identified as colt gray, a new student, surrendered when confronted by police. authorities say they previously investigated tips he was making online threats. >> obviously, they looked into it. they found there was no probable cause. a report was done, and there was no need to kind of take him into custody at the time. >> reporter: a community must now endure sorrow while it waits for justice. dan scheneman, nbc news. the president's son has

pleaded guilty to nine federal tax charges in a surprise move. in january, hunter biden pleaded not guilty to charges of failing to pay millions in taxes from 2016 to 2019. the guilty plea, which involved no deal with the government came just before jury selection was about to begin. hunter biden's lawyer says he chose to do this to protect those he love from the humiliation of a trial. trump is expected to appear in a new york courtroom today. he will face e. jean carroll before a panel of judges as the former president plans to appeal or tries to reduce the judgment. also a decision on the timing of mr. trump's sentencing in his hush money conviction. judge juan merchan is expected to rule on a motion to push that sentencing until after the election. meanwhile, there are new developments in the election interference case. jack smith was given until

december 26 to submit a brief, explaining the government's argument for mr. trump not being immune from the charges. the new timeline set by the judge yesterday makes it unlikely the immunity issue will be resolved before the election. now to the race for the white house. donald trump is laying out more of his economic vision for the country, which, if he gets a second term, could include a role for elon musk. here's vaughn hilliard. >> reporter: just days from his critical face-off with vice president harris, former president trump zeroing in on a top issue for voters, the economy. >> we delivered an economic miracle, which kamala and joe turned into an economic disaster. >> reporter: among the plans, increasing tariffs on imports and eliminating taxes on social security benefits and tips. harris recently adopted his no tax on tips proposal. >> she is adopting a lot of my

plan, in fact, we're going to send her a maga cap sometime in the future. >> reporter: he says elon musk would be appointed to a commission to cut waste. >> and elon, because he's not very busy, has agreed to head that task force. >> reporter: trump signed an executive order in 2020 that would have allowed for his administration to fire a segment of the federal civil workforce and hire his political appointees in their place. musk writing, i look forward to serving america if the opportunity arises, but that could raise conflicts of interest, since he owns companies regulated by the government. meanwhile, the harris campaign also focussing on the economy in this new ad. >> while corporations are gouging families, trump is focussed on giving them tax cuts. but kamala harris is focussed on you. >> building up the middle class will be a defining goal of my presidency. >> and our thanks to vaughn for that report.

president biden is preparing to block the sale of u.s. steel to a japanese company. both kamala harris and donald trump have opposed the deal. it's part of an effort to keep american companies under american ownership, but, as gabe gutierrez reports, not everyone is happy about it. >> reporter: this is u.s. steel, responsible for some 4,000 jobs across pennsylvania, and now at the center of a fight that's growing more heated. what frustrates you the most about all this? >> i think it's a lack of concern, you know. you're right, i'm pissed. >> reporter: he is the mayor of west mifflin. his garage is also his office. at first, he was skeptical when a japanese company, nippon, said it wanted to buy u.s. steel, but he says nippon won him over by promising billions of dollars in local investments. >> i've learned what the deal is about. what the offer is, the protection of jobs, protection of pensions, and modernization.

>> reporter: now two people familiar with the matter tell nbc news that president biden is preparing to announce that he will formally block the sale. earlier this week, vice president harris said she opposed it, too. >> u.s. steel should remain american-owned and american-operated. >> reporter: former president trump is also against the sale, but u.s. steel ceo is warning, without nippon's money, they'll have to pull out of western pennsylvania, costing thousands of jobs, including, perhaps, troy stephenson's. he's worked at u.s. steel for 27 years. how worried are you about your job if this deal falls through? >> very. very. i mean, we worry about our jobs all the time. right now, with what we know, we feel like nippon is the better deal. >> reporter: still, union leadership argues that deal would benefit stockholders, not workers, and it doesn't believe the ceo's threat. >> i think it is the most baseless, irresponsible threat and statement that any ceo could possibly make. >> reporter: mayor chris kelly,

though, thinks his town is caught in the middle. >> i believe everybody is being played as a pawn. >> reporter: and, as the presidential campaign intensifies, mayor kelly has a message for both kamala harris and donald trump. japanese investment is better than none at all. >> and our thanks to gabe for that report. british prosecutors have dropped their effort to convict harvey weinstein. the former movie producer was charged two years ago with indecent assault alleged to have taken place in london in 1996. the special crimes unit said there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. weinstein is currently jailed in new york where he faces a possible retrial for rape. he's been sentenced to 16 years for rape in los angeles. weinstein has denied any wrongdoing. turning now to the raging wildfire in central oregon.

the rail ridge fire has score scorched more than 83,000 acres. evacuation orders are under way, and areas surrounding a national forest are closed. so far, there are no reports of any injuries. stormy weather is in store for parts of the gulf and southeast, while there is heat out west. let's check in with angie lassman, who's tracking it all. happy friday, angie. >> happy friday. we made it. last day of the workweek, but not much of improvement or change. still dealing with flood alerts. plenty more rain over the next couple days. notice the front just sitting over that area. so we'll keep the rain in the picture there. also across the ohio valley, another cold front is going to work its way to the east, bringing rain to the northeast. the big batch of rain for the southeast will move off the coast, but you'll still notice that we have rain lift in the picture for the gulf coast. anywhere from 3 to 5 inches is more likely.

special fan is joining him in his 50th year as a season ticket holder. from our kc station, taylor hemness has more. >> reporter: first, some perspectives about bob. he got here before the chiefs did. >> there were no kansas city chiefs. there was no afc. there was no american football conference, you know. this is in 1941. >> reporter: bob moved to kansas from new york when he was just a boy. he went to games in municipal stadium when the team moved from dallas, but it changed a lot when arrowhead opened in 1972. >> i can remember, a group of us went, and we were just in awe. >> reporter: years later, he and his law partner purchased ten tickets. >> it was terrible. it took an hour and a half, two hours just to get out to the stadium. season tickets were under a hundred dollars per ticket. 22 rows up from the 50 yard
