5:10 am
good, at least with these cool mornings, which we do typically see as we head deeper into late summer into early fall. but as we go into next week, we're going to see high pressure developing over the southwest and continuing to move actually out over the pacific. so what will happen here is it will shift our wind direction and also allow for the jet stream and that low to dip farther to the south. and that's going to bring in some cooler temperatures. so we are going to have some relief here going into next week. i'll be tracking that for you, and we'll talk about what's ahead, going with all of our microclimates and how those temperatures will change. heading over to you, mike, you've been giving us an update on how those. that's right, kerry, we're looking at and so far all week the south bay has had this steady 389. we're talking about cupertino auto repair on stevens creek boulevard today. that's of course in cupertino for alameda county. the best in oakland is 409 at telagas on telegraph

nice and cool. all clear as you're heading off for work and it will be in the low 60s for the next couple of hours, but then we can see the temperatures climbing, and by noon we're already at 87 degrees. and you know, it's going to be a hot afternoon. we are going to have this. and then eventually cooling down, we'll get a look at all of our microclimates coming up. live. look at the golden gate bridge. much better visibility than yesterday. we have a smooth flow of traffic from the city into the north bay with all those tail lights going on in the south bay, we may have a new report out. check out what's going on for highway 85. coming up. well good morning. very happy friday to you. it is the first friday of the month. that means we get the big jobs report in about 15 minutes. the ceo of the bay area's clorox says she thinks consumers are cutting back looking for deals under more stress. she says clorox makes everything from bleach to hidden valley ranch dressing. paramount filed new financial papers after its takeover, showing tech tycoon

season the end of summer. so as we take a look at our live view in san jose, it's still going to be in the 90s up to 100 degrees. and breezy by the bay. as those highs head for the 70s and 80s and it will drop even more. this weekend and continue to go down a few more degrees early next week. so let's take a look at those highs for today. this is what we are getting used to seeing upper 80s mid 90s east san jose today up to 96 degrees and still some triple digits there. we'll see that in gilroy with 101 moving over toward the east bay. 100 in antioch, while oakland will be in the low seconds. so you can see the range and temperatures here really depends on your microclimates, because daly city will be nice and comfortable if you drive down, though the interstate or heading down the peninsula. it will be in the upper 80s in palo alto and then in san francisco. we're in the mid 60s for the marina district, but downtown in the upper 70s and for the north bay, it will
5:22 am
be as hot as 101 degrees in ukiah. but looking ahead, we've been talking about the lower temperatures and this is going to be much more seasonable coming out of those upper 90s into the upper 80s. for the rest of the weekend into early next week, and we'll see those temperatures holding throughout much of next week with sunshine and san francisco also getting back to some upper 60s, some low clouds and fog and afternoon sunshine. mike, you're hearing about an incident in the south bay. i had to check it out. highway 85 here. bottom of the screen. now northbound is the commute direction. that's where we heard about a disabled vehicle in the middle of highway 85 itself. middle lane. chp was not yet on scene and i did see some slowing, but it was in the opposite direction. so when i saw those sensors change, that's what drew my eye to the area anyway. should be all right. we'll continue to follow that as it is too early for the commute to really be hitting that spot right now, but it is right on time for highway 37 to show a little bit of slowing. and that bay bridge toll plaza. we see a

policy. her opponent talked about the economy. two economists and bankers in new york yesterday, donald trump spoke for an hour and a half, mostly about the economy, and repeated some of his previous claims, like china pays the american tariffs, it does not. he said illegal immigrants take 100%. his words of all new jobs created, they do not. trump committed to create a committee to make government more efficient, said elon musk would lead it, and he called for america to create its own sovereign wealth fund, a government pool of money that can be used to invest the way the saudis invest in uber and professional golf. have a wealth fund. other countries have wealth funds. we have nothing. we have nothing. we're going to have a sovereign wealth fund, or we can name it something different. i'll talk about it with mr. paulson, who's in the audience, and a lot of other friends of mine, and we'll name it something that's appropriate. perhaps sovereign wealth fund wouldn't be appropriate, but
5:46 am
it's going to be the same thing. now, the reason why the saudis have an investment fund and we don't is the saudi government has gobs of extra money, and we don't. we're running a huge deficit. trump says his tariffs paid for by americans will make up the difference. the candidates for vice president were on the campaign trail walls in pennsylvania, vance and arizona. both spoke about the tragedy in georgia. i said this and all of you here, both as a as a teacher and as a student and as a dad, i loved back to school season, time of hope, excitement. now for those kids, it'll always be a time of sheer terror, and that will be a memory that they'll hold forever. and it's a reminder for us, the country, we've got work to do. and i, for one, am sick and tired of hearing about thoughts and prayers rather than actually doing something about it. what is going to solve this problem? and i really do believe this is look, i don't like this.
5:47 am
i don't like to admit this. i don't like that this is a fact of life. but if you're if you are a psycho and you want to make headlines, you realize that our schools are soft targets and we have got to bolster security at our schools so that a person who walks through the front doo. we've got to bolster security so that if a psycho wants to walk through the front door and kill a bunch of children, they're not able to. finally, in a surprise move, hunter biden pleaded guilty to not paying his income tax for two years. the younger biden said he didn't want to put his family through more pain. this opens him up to potential prison time. the white house yesterday confirmed his father, president biden, will not pardon or commute his sentence. going to prison for not paying your taxes if you've paid them back with interest as hunter biden has, is rare. at one point, biden had a plea deal with prosecutors in which he wouldn't face any prison time. but that deal fell apart as it was clear the two sides had different ideas about what that deal
5:48 am
entailed. hunter biden will be sentenced marcus in december. all right, scott, thank you. a thrill for people in one pennsylvania boat harbor following an unexpected arrival. it's a whale. yeah. believed to be a humpback. take a look at this right here. so this captured the attention of those onlookers and pillar point harbor. this is near half moon bay. boat owners say that the whale showed up yesterday. could be seen frolicking into the evening hours. we actually spoke with one man who's actually lived on a boat there for 15 years, and he says he has never seen anything like this before. he was quite spectacular. he was swimming over between the fuel dock and the vw, and he actually hit the mermaid. and then he was going all the way around, back and forth, right here in front of the fuel dock. harbormasters believe that whale is in perfectly good health and is not
5:49 am
in any danger. they also say that it is probably ended up in the harbor by following the anchovies. everybody likes anchovies. i guess. well, new for you this morning. the south bay celebrating a very big anniversary this weekend. the sap center is hosting its 5,000th event today in the bay'. kris sanchez joins us with a look back and a look ahead. i remember when it opened in the early 90s. it was 31 years ago is when it actually opened. laura. so you were just a baby back then? i'm surprised that you would remember that. this is a big celebration. you can see the setup here for the ringling brothers greatest show on earth, and we'll talk about that in just a moment. but this has been a south bay institution. i want to show you some of the history here. we are talking 31 years since the doors opened here in the south bay. in that time, 50 million visitors have come through for all kinds of events,
5:50 am
from circuses to monster truck shows to concerts to gymnastics and tennis and all of that. $20 million in annual tax revenue. and that's just from the sharks alone. speaking of the sharks, they are negotiating their next ten year contract to remain here at the shark tank, and they promise a $1.25 billion economic impact over the next five years. now hockey of course not the only thing that happens here at the shark tank. you'll remember that i was here for u.s. gymnastics championships and u.s. figure skating. we saw some of the folks that you know, ultimately ended up at the olympics. we've been here for ncaa basketball and atp tennis tournaments as well. i have james hammett, vice president of events and booking with me here this morning. thanks so much for joining us. this is a lot of history. what's it like to be part of it? it's a great we love being part of the community. we love being part of the san jose
5:51 am
landscape, it's a great job. i pinch myself every time i come to work because it is all these events that we host with the ncaa, the rolling stones, you name it. it's really fun. now i'm wearing my sharks teal. i see you're wearing your sharks gear. you're saying we're looking on the up and up we are. yes. no but no better time to be a sharks fan than right now. we just number one overall pick. macklin celebrini just joined the team and he's going to be skating this year for the sharks. so come on down to the tank okay so i see the pin that you're wearing here on your shirt. and that is the commemoration pin for the 5,000th event here at the shark tank. yes yes. so we're celebrating 5000 events over the 31 years. and a lot of great events that we've had. it's fortuitous that it would be the circus. that was the first event. and now the 5000 event is going to be the circus on tomorrow, the seventh. so we're really excited about that. so this is kind of cool because the ringling brothers barnum and
5:52 am
bailey circus was the very first event 5000 events ago. now they have their reimagined show because a lot of folks didn't like some of the things that the circus, the elephants, the animals. so it's a different kind of circus. it's evolved. the shark tank also evolving as well. absolutely. so we constantly invest in the building to keep ourselves state of the art. we try to stay on the cutting edge. there's a lot of competition in the market. yeah. so we work very hard to bring as many events as we can for a wide variety of individuals and fans. and san jose and what our photographer jesse was just saying to it feels like you're really close to the action here, which is kind of nice here at the shark tank. so the circus is coming to town. six shows over the next three days, and way to look back at history here in san jose. back to you guys. very, very cool. a lot of history there that it is all right. thanks, chris. well, turning for you this morning with the 49ers faithful getting ready for monday night's opener over at
5:53 am
levi's. we here at today in the bay. we're really trying to prepare as well. and you know what? it takes a little challenge here and there. yeah we got the help of some faithful friends. so we go 567, 8123. it looks like seven eight actually looks great. yeah, actually looks great. yeah. do you see who's in the middle there? yeah, it looks good. i kind of did my own thing. let's take it away. that was the deer. haley and leah, two members of the niners gold rush cheerleading team. they stopped by our studio yesterday for our streaming newscast. we talked to them about their careers outside of cheering and of course, the upcoming season. watch the whole interview, marcus. talk to them. it's up on our website at nbcbayarea.com. their darling girls. yeah, i imagine they were great teachers there. and you passed the test. they had cooler outfits tonight. i mean, you were head cheerleader. that's why. yeah hey, don't forget
5:54 am
niners fans, nbc sports, bay area will have pre and post game coverage of monday's niners game. the pre game show starts at 4 p.m. what i should have done is shown my. i will see if i can dig up the real cheerleading picture. i was always the one that was on the top of the pyramid. yeah exactly. you know, you had to really trust them when you were falling back or whatever, toss you in the air at all. yeah, that was me. and they caught you. flier. they caught flying. yeah. all right, that's cool. all right. do you still have the pom poms? you might need them on monday. i have the megaphone. it's about as big as me. wow. yeah. yeah we'll be ready. i'm glad the kids love that. i'm sure. yeah. come down to dinner. yeah, yeah. yeah, exactly. good idea. all right, well, we are really celebrating this weekend. and the cooler weather coming in, as well as the kickoff to our football season. let's get a look at our air quality, which is also improving over the past couple of days. it's been in the
5:55 am
moderate to unhealthy range. and today it looks good. so we can get outside. and i know it's going to be warm this afternoon, but at least the air quality is going to be so much better going for that morning walk and foster city 61 degrees to start. the key really is the timing for getting out there to try to enjoy the sunshine. so we're going to be in the low 60s through 9:00 at noon at 72 degrees, really comfortable here. but there still will be some hot spots, like much of the south bay where we're going to see it as hot as 101 in gilroy and in downtown san jose. we're in the upper 80s today, still a couple of triple digit temperatures here and there, but overall, we're seeing it coming down a couple of degrees and across the bay area. we are going to have a wide range of temperatures. so even though it's 99 in danville, in oakland it will be 82 degrees and low 70s for half moon bay, with mid 80s. in redwood city we have upper seconds downtown and san francisco and the north bay still headed for the 90s this afternoon, but we've been
5:56 am
talking a lot about a cooling trend, and we are going to see those numbers coming down through at least the middle of next week with no more major spikes in temperatures. so that's the good news here, is that after today, we are going to see temperatures continuing to remain a little bit more normal for this time of year. and we'll see upper 60s return to san francisco. mike, you still have that transit alert? yeah. bart riders, heads up. we have a major delay specified heading through downtown oaklan. they talked about a disabled train just outside west oakland. and that is basically a hub for those lines as they travel through around the bay. expect this to impact your ride on bart and check those overhead signs, and we'll watch for any updates from the bart system. again, major delays reported here. sam trans may also have some service disruptions. we had heard about a number of operators that called in sick yesterday, and that may be the case today as well. everything else on the transit lines are moving well and on the roadways you have an option outside of the bart area of west oakland because the roadways are moving pretty well.
5:57 am
typical slowing starts up for the north bay and contra costa county drives. back to you. thanks, mike. well happening now, volunteers are still needed to help clean up the tenderloin glide and civic center josh becker. they actually plan to beautify the troubled san francisco neighborhood. it's all going to begin at 945 tomorrow morning at the glide memorial church on ellis street. the cleanup is all part of the monthly series of events by civic joy corps, focusing on different neighborhoods within the city. you can actually find out all those details on how to register. just go to civic joy fund.com. and we've got a lot more ahead at 6:00, including the trial for the accused killer of a san francisco tech executive. the new details on what could play out in court today. plus, covid is expected to surge after this past holiday weekend. the bay area. health expert breaks down what you can do to keep yourself and your loved ones healthy. and don't forget nbc bay area streams 24/7. you can watch us whenever you'd like on roku or other streaming platforms. a lot more news ahead. this friday morning. it's 557. you're watching today
