setting match with fritz and tiafo. fritz now launched into the finals tomorrow night. after months of trouble in space, the boeing starliner landed back on earth hours ago without the astronauts. nbc's senior correspondent tom costello has been covering this since the beginning. tom, this decision really pitted nasa and boeing against each other. >> reporter: that's right. the top engineers at oeing and nasa had heated issues with the thruster problems and if the ship could bring the crew safely home. nasa said no and starliner came back empty. it was just about midnight

eastern time when the three chutes lit up in the night sky over new mexico. a ten-day mission that turned into the three-month stay at the international space station coming to a partial conclusion. >> it's great to have the starliner home, a safe and successful landing was exactly what we wanted. >> reporter: staying behind on the station, astronauts butch wilmore and suni williams who prepared the ship to return home empty. >> it is bittersweet to pack up starliner. we want to make sure she is in good shape and have a nice, soft landing in the desert. >> reporter: starliner launced on june 5th on the flight and thruster problems kept them on the space station for 93days. haunted by the columbia, nasa decided not to risk putting the crew back on starliner. >> nasa has decided that butch

and suni will return with crew 9 next february. >> reporter: that's spacex mission will launch with two astronauts rather than four. williams and wilmore will take the empty seats on return. until then, running science experiments and cardio on the extended stay on the station. the ten-day mission now extended to eight months. now on saturday, we're now in day 94 in what was a ten-day mission. they are not back on terra firma until february, laura. >> what will they do? they only have a certain amount of clothes. >> reporter: they received clothes from a cargo ship mission. they do have some of their personal belongings. the issue is the missing events

and family events they planned for. it is not the same as being there. >> tom, thank you. now to the race for the white house and victory in court for former president trump. on friday, the new york city judge announced the criminal hush money conviction sentencing will not happen until after the election. we have reporting from inside vice president harris' preparation sessions for next week's critical debate. we have two reports this morning. we begin with dasha burns who covers the trump campaign. >> reporter: peter, good morning. a big win for the former president and legal team. the judge, whom the former president attacked, as politically motivated, pushing the sentencing date from later this month to later this year. in the motion, judge merchan said this is far from a typical

case. quote, this stands alone in this nation's history and the republic deserves a hearing free from distraction and distortion. this came hours after the former president attended the verdict in the civil suit from e. jean carroll. in remarks after the hearing, former president trump going after him and including jessica leeds who described a situation on a plane in the '70s. >> i'm looking at a woman and i grab her and start kissing her and making out with her. what are the chances of that happening? i know you will say it's a terrible thing. it couldn't happen. it didn't happen and she would not have been the chosen one.

friday. his father was there after being charged with second-degree murder. we have priya sridhar with more. priya, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter. neither father nor son entered a plea at the first court appearance. we are hearing from the district attorney that more charges are expected for the suspected shooter. 14-year-old colt gray appearing in court for the first time. shackled with hair covering his face. >> you are charged with four counts of felony murder. >> reporter: family members of victims sitting in the first row. soon after, his father, colin gray, appeared in the same courtroom. >> are you mr. colin gray? >> reporter: he is facing involuntary manslaughter and second-degree murder charges in connection with the shooting. >> these charges stem from mr. gray knowingly allowing his son,

colt, to possess a weapon. >> reporter: two law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation tell nbc news that colin gray gave his son an ar-15 style rifle as a gift last year following tips that colt made threats online. >> i don't know him saying anything like that. i'll be mad as hell if he did. >> reporter: he said he was shocked by the suggestion his son was making threats. >> it's no joke. >> we wouldn't be here if it was. >> i know. i'm telling you right now, we talk about it quite a bit. all the school shootings and things that happened. you getting picked on at school. he is. he is getting picked on at school. is everything okay? that's why i keep going up there. >> reporter: court records suggest the suspect had a

turbulent home life. according to an arrest warrant, fentanyl was found in her car. students christian angulo. >> he saw something in me. he just never let it go ever. >> reporter: his former player, quentin hyde said he became a coach because of him. >> knowing the impact he had on me. i want to have that impact on somebody. >> reporter: and some good news, peter, of the other nine gunshot victims. eight students and one teacher are all expected to make a full recovery. some of them have already been released from the hospital. the community here planning a candlelight vigil at apalachee high school football field tomorrow. peter. >> the recovery could take longer. priya, thank you.

just days after that deadly school shooting, a 15-year-old boy in maryland was shot and killed during a fight in a high school bathroom on friday. officials say the 16-year-old shooter will likely be charged as an assault. the boy was taken into custody after he fled into a nearby apartment complex. the victim, warren curtis grant, was air lifted to the baltimore hospital where he later died. the suspect will be identified once charged next week. as we approach the first anniversary of the attack on hamas on israel, the fbi broke up a plot planned for this october 7th. fbi arrested muhammed khan three days ago as he was about to cross the border from canada into the united states. he began posting on social media

last year and ar-style rifles he was planning to use. he is scheduled for a montreal court next week. the biden administration is looking for answers days after the american woman was killed in the west bank after protests on friday. witnesses say she was killed by soldiers. matt bradley is in tel aviv with more. matt, what more do we know? >> reporter: good morning. he had been here a few days before she was killed. eyewitnesss said the idf shot the 26-year-old activist in the head. now she had been participating in what has become weekly protests against expanding israeli settlements in beita. they returned fire after they hurled rocks at them. they said the incident is under review.

the report said a foreign national was killed. another activist with egyi, he said the protests were quiet at the time of her killing. he said she was deliberately murdered by a kill shot. now, secretary of state antony blinken said the u.s. is still trying to get more information about this killing, but egyi was a graduate of the university of washington and she had been -- she had been the third american who was killed so far in the west bank just this year. in a statement from egyi's family, they demanded the u.s. investigate her death. they said her presence was taken from them unlawfully, violently and needlessly by the idf. guys. >> so disturbing thinking of her family. matt, thank you. time to get a first check of the forecast in what we hope is a nice weekend. angie lassman is keeping eyes on that. >> hello. we will see nice conditions and

joining us on this saturday, september 7th. i'm kira klapper. the driver accused in a deadly wrong-way crash that claimed the lives of a bay area mother and her son, made his first court appearance. 39 year old duncan macquarie was charged with two counts of murder. yesterday he did not enter the courtroom but could be seen in the hallway in what appeared to be a wheelchair. investigators say about two weeks ago, the florida man caused this crash after he drove about nine miles the wrong way on highway 85 in san jose at speeds of up to 100mph. ultimately he slammed his rented pickup truck into a tesla carrying rebecca olson and her 14 year old son, charlie. the da says the florida man was driving under the influence and acting recklessly. we don't know the answer at this point as to why he got out of the car at one point and then got back into the car and continued driving at excessive speeds against

traffic. that's something that we will investigate and try to get an answer for. i don't know if we ever will know that answe. prosecutors say macquarie had close calls with other drivers before the deadly crash. he is due back in court in november. going to take a big turn now to cinthia pimentel with a quick look at our microclimate forecast. sounds like it will be a nice weekend. it should be. we are seeing some camera views right now that are drastically different than what we've had as we've gone through this heat wave this week, we have the fog returning to san francisco, actually socking in the camera there a little bit, and also some clouds making its way towards livermore and the tri valley. but mainly staying out towards the coastline. we see a bit chillier start to our saturday up there in novato and santa rosa in the low 50s, mid 50s for half moon bay. also, with those visibility changes that i want you to be aware of as you start your day. meantime a mild one down here in san jose at 64 degrees. so as we plan our

nice stroll around the block to mostly clear down here in san jose at 62 degrees. we'll do 60 in walnut creek and see our microclimates of course, in through san francisco. the fog has returned. it's cooling down those temperatures a bit. so as we go throughout the day and maybe towards the morning especially, just be careful with those visibility changes, especially by the coast 50s and 60s to start. and by the time we get into our lunchtime hour, it should be very mild out there towards the east bay, already climbing into those mid to upper 80s as well as down into the south county by the bayshore. we should see a little bit more of a breezy day as we have a system just to our north that is bringing minor changes. so i think we're doing better in the temperature department compared to the heat wave that we've been dealing with this week. as we go on and take a look at our daytime highs, yes, they are still very warm in those 90s for the east bay and down into the south county and those upper 90s, but for the bay shore will bring down those temperatures about ten degrees. so we'll talk about the further cooling changes coming up into next week at 7 a.m. kira back to you. all
