its first ever night market. hundreds showing up for this culturally significant event. the booths organizers say it hopes to bring to the troubled neighborhood. thanks for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area. i'm gia vang and i'm terry mcsweeney. we begin with breaking news out of kentucky, where a manhunt is underway for a person. police say may be tied to a shooting on a freeway. it happened about an hour and a half south of lexington. it's on i-75 north of a town called london in laurel county. the city's mayor says seven people were hit. excuse me? injured, but all survived. not all were hit, though. some were shot, some were hurt in crashes that followed the gunman in the mass shooting remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. the governor and law enforcement are urging people to avoid that area. now, here is a look at the suspect. 32 year old joseph couch, described as about five foot ten, 154 pounds. it's believed he is still in laurel county. we

are asking everybody in the city of limits to be vigilant and know what your surroundings. if you're home, keep your doors locked. i'm not asking anybody to panic. there is no immediate danger here in the city, but again, while these guys or this person is on the loose, we are asking everybody to be safe. it's not clear what led up to that shooting. we're going to bring you the very latest as we learn more. all right. also tonight you may have noticed cooler today compared to those triple digit temperatures. we were talking about the last hurrah of summer this last week. and we're seeing cooler temperatures on the way. some improvement. you know, we've lost the heat advisories around the bay area. still a little bit warm inland right now. you got san francisco. the fog spilling in across the golden gate bridge. still clear in san jose. as we show you the changes taking place this weekend, a slightly cooler weekend, but valleys will still see some 90s tomorrow. midweek, though, things could get downright interesting. it will cool down big time as we head towards the middle part of the week. there's

a look at the cooling right now around the bay area, but upstream coming our way tuesday into wednesday as a weather system that drops into northern california. look at that. even a chance of seeing a few showers off to the north. so this is what's going to bring real cooling. but unfortunately, it is likely to bring a lot of wind with it. we'll take a closer look at the impact on temperatures ahead. and those shower chances around midweek. coming up in our forecast in about ten minutes. all right, rob, thanks very much. well, a driverless car controversy in san francisco tonight. waymo has released details about a possible crash between a cyclist and one of its cars. now, this happened back in july. the waymo car was coming out of a parking garage on mission street between seventh and eighth. waymo says the car stopped for the cyclist, who passed in front of the car, started to dismount that bike and then allegedly put a hand on the car, backed the bike up, dropped the bike and then he just fell to the ground. cyclist was taken to the hospital, though it's not clear for exactly what injuries. while the vehicle was in autonomous mode, there was a test driver in the

car at that time. waymo maintains the car stopped that it was not moving as the cyclist got hurt. waymo vehicles have been in 83 crashes in san francisco since 2020. eight of them involving injuries. new details about an early morning stabbing at walgreens in san francisco yesterday. this happened at a store on montgomery street near california. police say a man was trying to steal items when an employee confronted him. that's when the man stabbed the worker. he was taken to the hospital, expected to be okay. the attacker took off. so far, no arrests. an oakland family remembering a teen killed in a hit and run crash last month. a funeral was held for 17 year old madina carrillo lopez at a church in oakland. the teen died in a crash on august 19th. she was crossing the street with her mother at the intersection of international boulevard near 72nd street, when they were hit by a car. the teen died at the scene. her mother rushed to the hospital, later released. 37 year old driver was arrested after crashing a mile from the scene. he's been charged with

several crimes, including vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated. for a san francisco woman, a tragic way to end burning man. a week ago today, she was trying to scale a huge art installation at burning man when she fell off and suffered major injuries. rachel gingery says she climbed up 40ft in this art piece when she slipped on her way down, landing on her back. the art resembles a sinking ship. she spent the next 16 hours in the burning man medical tent before she was taken by ambulance to a hospital in reno. that's more than two hours away. that's when she learned the extent of her injuries. i had four fractured vertebrae on the transverse processes on the left side, and i had one one fractured rib. and then my lung and my spleen were both bruised. now doctors are telling her she's expected to make a full recovery. she says she knew the risks and doesn't blame the artist who created that installation. she says she is grateful to be alive and

ready for this. she's planning to head back to burning man again next year. we'll. have you seen him? the search is on for a missing teenager in the south bay. this is 17 year old max bennett womble. police say he was last seen on wednesday night near the santa clara square shopping center. at the time, he was wearing a black tank top and blue jeans. police believe he took the vta light rail to milpitas near the great mall. anyone with information is asked to call 911. flames temporarily forced some people out of a san francisco high-rise. it happened around 1:00 at the gateway building on davis court. sfpd says the fire broke out in the building's underground garage. firefighters quickly contained the fire, and residents were let back in about 45 minutes later. no one was hurt. right now, oakland's first ever chinatown night market has taken over several city blocks. the lion dancers, djs, dozens of food vendors brought big crowds. nbc bay area's alyssa goard explains why the neighborhood is hoping it will inspire many to come back. hundreds of people have

packed the streets here in oakland tonight for the city's inaugural chinatown night market, and there are two blocks of eighth street that are taken up for this event. both of those blocks are filled with people waiting for food, enjoying music, and all of the cultural festivities that are going on here. organizers say that while this event was definitely inspired by the success that san francisco has had with its night markets, they want this event to have distinctly oakland flair. they've added some electronic music, djs and food trucks to help lure in a bigger crowd, and they're hoping that the economic benefits of this event last well into the future. in oakland, alyssa goard, nbc bay area news. alyssa. thank you. wildfires can happen any time of the year, but we're headed into what's traditionally the heart of fire season here in california. well, today, people in the north bay had a chance to see firsthand the importance of being fire ready. here's nbc bay area's christie smith. when they see

that red flag to make sure they have a go bag. a steady stream of people headed to the marin civic center fairgrounds saturday, hoping to get more clarity about what they could have next to my house. information david knopf found at the third annual ember stomp a wildfire prevention event that helps people learn how to be prepared before a fire breaks out. i think there's certainly a history here of fire, and we know that history repeats itself related to fire. so we're trying to interrupt that that process or that cycle. and i think our residents really understand that. and they're making that investment. today people were able to check out what fire safe landscaping looks like and learn about home hardening, which is reducing a home's wildfire risk by using noncombustible materials. two structures were put to the test during a live burn demonstration. one built with fire resistant materials, the other without. the demonstration, also highlighting the importance of having a five

foot noncombustible buffer zone around a home. one of them is wildfire prepared. the other one is very typical construction. we're going to light small fires as if embers had gotten into the neighborhood. and sadly, one of these structures is going to become a pile of ash. the other one is going to be unaffected. with wildfire risk not going away, california's insurance situation was also on the minds for some today. we're kind of next to open space. i think when the fires go the other way. but still, i do worry about the insurance, and that's one reason i put in a new gate, because they didn't want wood gates and redid all my, my vents underneath the house. the message today was about coming together and staying ready to make sure that on if and when a day happens that marin is threatened, we are prepared with our homes, hardened with our landscape, ready for wildfire. christie smith, nbc, bay area

news. and it is no drill going on in southern california that is the real thing. mandatory evacuations in the city of highland in san bernardino county have expanded because of the lion fire. it has scorched more than 7100 acres and is 0% contained. the fire broke out thursday quickly grew. so far, though, flames have not burned any homes or buildings. now north of lake tahoe, firefighters are making some progress on the bear fire. it is now 23% contained. flames have burned more than 3300 acres there. that fire started monday near the town of sierra brooks, about 50 miles northwest of reno. mandatory evacuation orders are still in place. the cause is under investigation. we're really proud of this one. all right, we wrap up our clear the shelters push. thanks to your help. more than 150 animals found their forever homes today. let's take you out to the east bay for adopt a thon with berkeley humane today in the bay's marcus washington and laura garcia. look at them right there. max cordero and bella

i came to bayview hunter's point, where there was only one pediatrician to serve more than 10,000 children. daniel lurie said, i'm going to help. we opened a clinic for our most vulnerable children. i have worked shoulder to shoulder with him as we have brought solutions where people thought the problem was unsolvable. daniel doesn't take excuses. he holds himself accountable. and i know that he can do it for the city of san francisco. california mining camp. nearly two weeks later, the sacramento woman was found alive. peyton headley from our sister station, has details on the miraculous discovery. this is near the area

in eastern nevada county, where deputies found 24 year old esmeralda marie pineda. after she had been missing for 12 days. just happy, ecstatic, amazed that she was still alive. sergeant dustin mau and his partner were the ones to find her. she was able to pick her head up and kind of wave at us. mau says pineda had been camping down in the canyon by the middle yuba river with three of her friends the night of august 25th. her friends say she mentioned wanting to go back to sacramento the morning of the 26th. her friends say when they woke up, she was gone. so her friends went searching for her during that day and couldn't find any signs whether she had made it out. 12 days of search and rescue efforts through treacherous terrain spared no expense from rope systems to get down to the river. dogs trailing her scent and aircrafts using infrared cameras looking for pineda. the area on the middle fork where she was. there's not trail systems, so people just

generally don't go down there. friday. mau says they found her at the top of the canyon, meaning she had made a big climb. she probably had to scale around an 800 foot vertical foot climb to get up out of the canyon. and it's not just a gradual, nice walk up, it's you're on your hands and feet climbing up the canyon walls. from there, she was life flighted to a hospital for treatment. as for how she survived? who knows? i mean, maybe she had good survival instincts. she had luck behind her, and she managed to pull through those 12 days. that was peyton headley reporting. no word tonight on how pineda is doing or the extent of her injuries. new tonight. a heads up for dodge ram pickup truck owners. the automaker stellantis is recalling more than a million of these trucks worldwide. it's all to fix a software problem. stellantis says anti-lock brake technology could inadvertently shut down the truck's stability control. the recall covers certain trucks from 2019 through 2024, mostly in north america.

stellantis says it's not aware of any crashes or injuries from that problem. well, team usa men's wheelchair basketball team has made history in paris. they are now the first men's wheelchair basketball team to win three gold medals at the paralympics. team usa beat great britain today 73 to 69. that. that's a celebration. after. bay area resident brian bell scored seven points. a team now returning home as the most successful men's wheelchair basketball team of all time. amazing. congratulations. yeah. all right. a sweet end to a tough year for tennis. great arena. sabalenka the number two tennis player from belarus, bested american jessica pegula to take the u.s. open title today. there was a moment 26 year old sabalenka has won a trio of major tournaments in the past 20 months, following back to back australian open titles. she really wanted to win the u.s. open. it has been a very difficult year personally, as her former boyfriend and nhl

to toss the beads. so you get that. nbc bay area swag to everyone. everyone, everyone is invited in. indeed indeed. all right, so 11 a.m. is the is the parade time? the weather forecast. okay. got that covered. you know, we've got some low clouds, a little bit of that. but picture perfect parade weather. let's start with the oakland pride outlook for tomorrow parade and the festivities during the day tomorrow are going to be starting off in the 60s with some low clouds. here's the parade start time 11:00. but as we move forward to mid afternoon, it doesn't get better than that. look at that upper seconds. sunny skies, not too windy, breezes picking up a little bit later in the afternoon, but should be really nice out in oakland tomorrow. get out there and enjoy a fun time there in oakland tomorrow. right now 61 degrees. seeing a few areas of low clouds on approach and a foggy drive right there. golden gate bridge misty skies across the bridge right now. no sign of fog in walnut creek. it's still 71 degrees. technically a little bit cooler than the same time yesterday and back into san jose. we've got upper 60s clear skies for now.

may see a few low clouds towards morning, so the temperatures around the bay area did cool off a few degrees, but we still hit close to 100 degrees in livermore and around morgan hill as well. we're looking at 90s again tomorrow. there's enough of a sea breeze. it's managed to cool off the inner bay and near san jose, but not all places inland. really getting significant cooling just yet. so here's how the morning starts off. lots of low clouds back into the sunshine for the afternoon. we'll see numbers starting off in the 50s and low 60s for morning temperatures and then more sunshine and more 90s around morgan hill tomorrow, downtown san jose, upper 80s. as you head over to the tri valley, we'll see low to mid 90s, similar temperatures up towards concord, but there you go. oakland into hayward, upper 70s to low 80s, 85 degrees in redwood city, downtown san francisco, close to 71 degrees and north bay. temperatures did cool down. today will be mostly in the 80s again tomorrow, and a repeat performance expected on monday, but for real inland cooling. look what happens here

tuesday and especially by wednesday. inland highs 70s and low 80s and a chance of seeing some showers north in a time of year. we don't often see any rain chances, but here's what's coming tuesday night into wednesday. areas in the north bay may be up towards lake county and mendocino county as we approach wednesday. right there could be the chance of a few showers off to the north of sonoma county, but we'll likely have some wind to deal with as well. so look at san francisco here. you got temperatures staying pretty consistent throughout, a little bit cooler towards tuesday. and wednesday, and we finally lose the 90s inland for the middle part of the week. and there is monday and monday night football at at levi's stadium. looks like mid 80s cooling into the 70s. as that game goes on. and we will see more cooling as we head through tuesday through thursday. but watching the wind closely as that storm passes by to the north. yeah, and everyone watching for monday when the 49ers play to. all right rob thanks. coming up, packing a punch with an open hand. bo.

encephalopathy, a neurodegenerative disease caused by repeated hits to the head and concussions, a condition the nfl has come under major fire for in recent years and taking steps to mitigate the brain injury. association of america even put out an open letter last year calling for the nevada athletic commission to put an end to the fights. power slap responding in a statement saying all power slap events are staffed by numerous medical professionals. participants are subjected to rigorous medical testing and that they're following the laws and rules that bind other regulated combat sports, such as boxing and mixed martial arts. yes, of course, you've got some sort of a medical professional there standing by, but it's closing the barn door after the horse has escaped. dana white, the man these athletes are willing to take a slap for addressing the safety concerns. last year, an average boxing match. a guy takes 400 to 600 punches. these slap guys take three slaps or less. is it a

the school shooting this week. this was the scene at apalachee high where people formed a large prayer circle around a memorial on the campus lawn. today investigators say two teachers and two students were shot and killed wednesday by a 14 year old at the school in winder.

that's about an hour northeast of atlanta. within that prayer circle, there was a smaller group of people holding several bandanas tied together. they were in apalachee high colors, blue and gold. and the show of unity comes as the new york times reports, the alleged shooter's mother called the school the morning of the attack, warning of a, quote, extreme emergency. an interview with investigators last year is shedding light on that 14 year old. his father and their guns. grace king has the recordings that are now coming to light. do you have weapons in the house? i do. are they accessible to him? they are. i mean, there's nothing loaded, but they are down. an interview with the jackson county sheriff's office in 2023, shedding light on the grays and their guns goes all the way back to me. like introducing him to bow hunting. then it was a pellet gun. then it was a 22. and gun safety. all of this because i worry about him in school. and you know

what? what would ever happen in 2023? records show the fbi passed along a tip to jackson county about a user on a gaming app, discord, believed to be colt gray, asking for locations to shoot up, sending pictures of his guns and threatening to do it really soon. it's kind of a little bit of a shock. so in whatever y'all are telling him, please instill in him that what if this is whatever or wherever this is coming from? it's no joke. at the time, jackson county investigators wrote that due to the inconsistent nature of the information received by the fbi, the allegation that colt is the user behind the discord account that made the threat cannot be substantiated. the exceptionally cleared the case with a warning. this is going to be a report saying that pretty much what we've done in reference to this and that we talked and he's saying that you didn't say anything like that. and i got to take your word, and i hope you're being honest with me. i'm not saying you're lying, but it's a serious thing. it's

not unusual for people to lie to the police. all right. that was grace king reporting. it has been nearly 48 hours. and still no word on the identity of the woman. police say was killed in vallejo. it happened early yesterday morning. thursday? it happened thursday near the intersection of tennessee street and mare island way, near the napa river. investigators say the victim was shot inside of her vehicle, which then crashed. she died at the scene. no word on any arrest. turning now to decision 2024, one high profile endorsement for president will be missing this election. former president george w bush tells nbc he will not be endorsing anybody. when asked whether his wife laura, would endorse either kamala harris or former president trump. bush's office said no. mr. bush says he retired from presidential politics years ago. this week, vice president harris won endorsements from republican representative liz cheney and her father, former vice president dick cheney, as well as jimmy mccain, the son of the

late senator john mccain. former president trump was on the campaign trail in wisconsin today. he addressed supporters at a rally in mosinee, wisconsin, a battleground state that could decide the election. and this visit comes as mr. trump tries to solidify support in his base. during remarks trump pledged to reshape the federal government, including eliminating the department of education and redirecting the justice department. he also called the delay of his sentencing in his new york hush money trial evidence that the case amounts to a so-called witch hunt. republican vice presidential nominee jd vance is expected to hit the rural areas of the rust belt hard in the next few weeks, and vice president harris took a moment to answer questions from reporters in pittsburgh today. she made a campaign stop at penzeys spices while in between preparations for her upcoming debate with former president trump, harris was asked how she felt about being endorsed by longtime republicans liz and dick cheney. she said it was an honor and that their support illustrates that americans have more in common than they think. harris also said she is ready

for her first debate with mr. trump. nbc news will have pre and post-debate coverage of next week's highly anticipated debate, and you can watch right here on nbc bay area starts at 5:00 tuesday evening. well bart saw its highest ridership last week since the start of the pandemic. the agency says more than 194,000 people rode bart on wednesday. san francisco's embarcadero station saw the most riders some 20,000. the downtown berkeley station had nearly 7000 riders. bart says the high ridership partly because of students returning to school. bart ridership has been slower since the pandemic in april. the chronicle reported bart's ridership was at about 45% of 2019 levels. well tonight, alameda county leaders are sounding the alarm on a possible medfly infestation. that's a mediterranean fruit fly. medflies lay eggs inside fruit and vegetable crops, making them inedible. so officials have placed the 71 mile area of alameda county. there, which includes fremont, under

quarantine. the usda says this was all sparked by one medfly in fremont. any farms or homes that grow fruits or vegetables in the area are going to be sprayed with a pesticide. crops cannot be removed from the area until the quarantine is over. no word on when that might be. farm workers and their families spent the day crabbing in san francisco, part of an event put on by the latino nonprofit called alas and the partnership for the presidio. the idea was to honor the hard work of farm workers and their families by giving them a day to spend together. the families took busses from half moon bay to christie field right there, and from there they went crabbing. they went hiking and played beach games at torpedo wharf. a new back to school program kicked off in san francisco, spearheaded by the city's district attorney. it's called keeping it safe with dub nation. today's free launch outside the chase center featured food, games, activities, giveaways, raffles. d.a. brooke jenkins says the goal is to celebrate san francisco's youth as they return to school, while providing them with an

opportunity to meet and interact with law enforcement partners. it is extremely important for the community to know that law enforcement is their allies, and they're here to protect them, not to harm them. and so it's important for our law enforcement agencies to actually come to the community, engage with youth and give them a positive experience with them. a number of law enforcement and community organizations were part of this launch. now, kids who attended got free tablets and backpacks. the city intends to make this an annual back to school event. san jose's mayor teamed up with bay area. ice skating legend. none other than kristi yamaguchi. today, in the name of literacy, this is a look at the second annual family literacy festival, where our very own janelle wang was an emcee. there she is. right there. she's everywhere. yes. put on in partnership with yamaguchi's always dream foundation and san jose's public library foundation and children's discovery museum. the event offers a celebrity and author story readings, activities, music, art and much more. the goal is to increase

more than 150 animals found their forever homes today. yes, many of the adoptable pets were named after members of our nbc bay area and telemundo 48 family. there was a terry. there was gia vang dog and cat. yes. and then get this. the final adoption of the day in berkeley actually was a puppy. marcus. washington. go, marcus. here's nbc bay area's thom jensen. this is a milestone event ten years now with clear the shelters for nbc bay area and nbc universal. more than 31,000 pets adopted over the past nine years. more

than a million nationwide and thousands more. this year. 22 shelters brought more than 300 pets to berkeley. humane's adopt a thon, which annually marks the final weekend of clear the shelters. we got close to 20 animals, all including cats and dogs. it's the largest single event like this in the state. adopting out not just dogs and cats, but smaller animals too. even pigeons and domesticated rodents. it's fantastic because this is like the culmination event of clear the shelters. so it's like, you know, it's an adoption event, but it's also a great community engagement event. on average, more than 3400 pets adopted out every year in the bay area through the clear the shelters campaign, with pets being adopted at reduced rates and even free in some cases. what do you think about this event where you were able to come and get you know, like free vaccinations, reduce costs? i think it's a great event because you get to meet other people and like, there's a lot of service for options and pets. you know, it's a win for

families who find their forever friends and pet owners on budgets who can also bring their existing pets for free vaccinations. i think it's really nice because like, obviously as a student, like sometimes the vet can be expensive. we try to host an environment where families feel, you know, comfortable and safe adopting. and at the peninsula humane society adopt a thon in burlingame, people adopting new pets got to name their own adoption fee. we were able to get a good price and we're happy with. and we couldn't be happier with this nice, calm guy. and more forever. friendships are sealed as clear. the shelters wraps up another year. we're very excited to extend our to expand our family and have the american dream. you know, a house baby, a family, and a dog. pets like kris kimura here are still up for adoption through september 10th, and you can still donate to clear the shelters fund. dot org through the end of this month. in berkeley, thom jensen, nbc bay
