"early today" starts right now. good morning to you i'm richard lui. we're going to start in kentucky where the hunt for a gunman has been suspended until daylight. 32-year-old joseph couch is suspected of shooting and wounding five people with an a r 15 on saturday night. we have the area contained until the manhunt can start up again.

>> we're going to continue to contain the area, continue to have people in the woods. not actively searching, of course, but in strategic positions to observe. >> couch is considered armed and dangerous. we're going to now turn to last week's deadly school shooting in georgia. we have some new details now coming to light about the urgent warning from the suspect's mother in the minutes before this all happened. priscilla thompson has the latest. >> reporter: troubling new details about the mass shooting at apalachee high school on wednesday. the "washington post" reporting that marcie gray, the mother of the suspected gunman tried to warn authorities making a ten minute call to the school at 9:50 a.m., half an hour before the gunfire erupted. gray writing in text messages to her sister, annie brown, i was the one that notified the school counselor at the high school and i told them it was an extreme

emergency for for them to go immediately and find my son to check on him. nbc news confirmed the call with brown, but has not seen or verified the text messages. one of the stews dents in gray's class reportedly saw an official looking for gray moments before the shooting began. >> she thought that he was another kid with a very similar name and then about 10 to 15 minutes later that's when the one they were looking for came shooting. if they would have acted in the beginning, maybe some of the lives could have been saved today. >> reporter: in all, two students and two teachers were killed. nine others were injured. in a statement to nbc news, baro county school system says they are not commenting on specific details. with the shooter and his father in police custody, both pleading not guilty to multiple counts of felony murder, investigators are now working to uncover a motive. as the community grapples with unspeakable loss. >> our thanks to priscilla for that report.

we are less than 48 hours away from the first debate between former president trump and his new opponent, vice president kamala harris. nbc news learning now some details about how each campaign is preparing. nbc's brie jackson joins us now live. brie, a very good morning to you. what are we hearing about how they're preparing here. >> good morning, richard. so the candidates do seem to be taking very different approaches. vice president harris has been hunkered down in pittsburgh since thursday. sources familiar with the preparations tell nbc news that the harris campaign has been working on ways to weave her biography into her policy answers. they also say the vice president is preparing for the possibility that former president trump could make derogatory comments about her. the trump campaign has been preparing by holding meetings with advisers and the former president held a rally in wisconsin this weekend, where he gave this preview of the debate. >> we're run by stupid people.

news now starting at 8:00 p.m. eastern tomorrow. three israelis were shot to death at a keyboarder crossing sunday. they were all workers at a bridge crossing into jordan in the israeli-occupied west bank. the gunman was a jordanian truck driver who was shot dead by security forces. land border crossings from israel and the west bank into jordan were then shut down over this incident. for the latest let's go to nbc's claudio lavanga. good morning. what do we know? >> reporter: good morning, richard. israeli authorities say that the shooter was a jordanian national who arrived in a truck at the commercial cargo area of the bridge crossing on the border between jordan and the israeli-occupied west bank. once arrived he opened fire with a handgun killing three israeli workers before he was shot dead by israeli security forces there. the authorities have named him,

he was a 38-year-old former or retired, rather, jordanian soldier, and said that he acted alone. as you mentioned, the bridge crossing was closed as well as the other land crossings into jordan and israel said that they will reopen it at some stage today. in the meantime the death toll in gaza continues to rise. the health ministry in gaza said that on sunday alone at least 15 people were killed in israeli air strikes all across the enclave, including the deputy director of the gaza civil emergency services, which issued a statement saying that with this death the number of their members of the gaza civil emergency service that were killed by israeli forces since the start of the war has now risen to 83, richard. >> all right. claudio, thank you so much for that report. we now move to hundreds of protesters that gathered in seattle this weekend in memory of a dual american turkish

citizen who was shot and killed friday in the west bank while protesting israeli settlements there. eyewitnesses are saying that the 26-year-old was shot in the head by idf soldiers. demonstrators marched through downtown seattle saturday demanding a ceasefire between israel and hamas. the idf says it is looking into her death and the family has called for an independent investigation. arizona police say some 30 people were injured in an alleged drunk driving incident saturday night a 73 year old man driving into an elks lodge when he was trying to leave. he was arrested after that crash. officials say alcohol was a contributing factor. at least ten people were take ton local hospitals and five others drove themselves. one person is now in critical but stable condition, others were treated on the scene for minor injuries. we're now going to go to the raging wildfires in california that are forcing thousands of

evacuations. the line fire there exploding in size over the weekend devouring over 20,000 acres. san bernardino county now under a state of emergency as more than 35,000 homes and buildings are in harm's way. in northern california's lake county the boyles fire has destroyed more than 40 homes, 30 structures displacing around 4,000 residents. and then next door in nevada, the 6,500 acre davis fire prompting an emergency declaration south of reno. more than 6,000 customers still without power after lines were deenergized for safety there. and the extreme heat in the region has been adding fuel to these fires, that continues today as well. let's go to nbc meteorologist ryan hanrahan. so you're tracking those temperatures for us as well. we also have the gulf and we've got some concern about a tropical system there, too. >> looks like we may have a hurricane forming in the next couple days in the gulf of mexico and the good news is out west today will be the last

really hot day in california. i think temperatures begin to moderate a bit once we get past today into tomorrow and wednesday. here is that tropical system right now it's not a tropical storm, it's called potential tropical cyclone 6, that means the national hurricane center expects it to become a tropical system. winds now at 50 miles per hour. it's moving to the north and right now the forecast calls for this could become a tropical storm later today and then a hurricane by wednesday morning, just to the south of houston and then the storm gets very close to the texas/louisiana border. this could be a pretty significant storm for portions of texas and louisiana. we will watch this very closely. then the storm weakens as it moves over land. still an excessive heat warning today for los angeles, 24 million people impacted in southern california. going to be a hot one, temperatures today in los angeles in the 90s, las vegas 103 and

richard. the trial started today we look at google's advertising business and determine whether it acted like a monopoly and led to higher prices for customers. the department of justice will argue that google locked in publishers and advertisers to its product. back in august already as you mentioned just now a judge ruled that google has held a monopoly in internet search. so this marked the biggest antitrust ruling in the tech industry since microsoft more than 20 years ago. so the new trial starting today is likely to last for several weeks and it is a first tech antitrust trial from a case brought by the biden administration. sticking to tech, it's glow time for apple. this is how the tech giant named its annual event happening later today and it's set to unveil its latest iphone range along with other product updates. it's an important one, it's closely watched because it is expected to be the first lineup with its artificial intelligence system called apple intelligence
