sentences. >> aaron, thank you so much for that. you can watch our live debate coverage on nbc and on our streaming channel, nbc news now. that starts at 8:00 p.m. eastern tomorrow. three israelis were shot to death at a keyboarder crossing sunday. they were all workers at the bridge crossing into jordan in the israeli occupied west bank. the gunman was a jordanian truck driver who was shot dead by idf forces. all civilian land border crossings from israel and the west bank into jordan were shut down over that incident. for the latest, let's go to claudio lavanga. claudio, what are we learning? >> reporter: good morning, richard. what israeli authorities are saying is the shooter was a jordanian national who arrived in a truck at the commercial cargo area of the bridge crossing between jordan and the israeli occupied west bank. once he arrived there, he opened fire with a handgun, killing three israeli workers before he

was shot dead by israeli security forces. and now the authorities have named the shooter as al jazi, a 38-year-old retired jordanian soldier and said he acted alone. as you mentioned, after the shooting, the allenby bridge closing was closed as well as the land crossing between israel and jordan. in the meantime, well, israel said they will reopen at some stage today. meantime, the death toll in gaza continues to rise. the health ministry in gaza says at least 15 people were killed just on sunday by israeli strikes across the enclave, including the deputy director of the gaza civil emergency services, which issued a statement saying with this, that the number of members of the gaza civil emergency services that were killed since the start of the war on october 7th now has risen to 83. richard? >> nbc's claudio lavanga, thank you. three former memphis police officers will now stand trial on

federal charges over the killing of tyre nichols. nichols, as you might remember, was severely beaten by five cops after a traffic stop earlier last year. he died in the hospital after medics failed to administer aid. demaryius bean, and justin smith have pleaded not guilty to civil rights violations, conspiracy to tamper with evidence and obstruction of justice. two other former cops involved in the case have accepted plea deals. arizona police say some 30 people were injured in an alleged drunk driving incident. on saturday night, a 73-year-old plan drove into an elks lodge when he was trying to leave. he was arrested after the crash, and official says alcohol was a contributing factor. at least ten people were taken to local hospitals, and five others drove themselves. one is in critical but stable condition. others were treated on the scene for minor injuries. we're going turn to state of emergency in southern california. thousands of people racing to

evacuate from a fast-moving wildfire. the line fire has devoured more than 20,000 acres. tens of thousands of buildings, and homes now at risk. dana griffin has the details. >> reporter: thousands forced to evacuate as the line fire burning in san bernardino county threatens 35,000 homes and buildings. >> those forest fires this summer, this one ranks up there because of the unpredictability. it might not be the biggest in acreage, but we have people in front of it, and it's very unpredictable, makes it that much more dangerous. >> reporter: the area under a state of emergency, located in the mountains 60 miles east of los angeles. the fire fueled by unpredictable thunderstorms, steep terrain and scorching temperatures with 300 lightning strikes saturday alone. rain in the area has helped a bit, but the threat is not over. in nevada, the davis fire also forcing hundreds to evacuate.

>> keep going, guys, keep going. >> reporter: dozens of horses seen here rung alongside a crowded smoky roadway in washoe county. flames there burning 1500 acres, setting ablaze homes and other structures. meanwhile, 30 million are under heat alerts across the west. a 3-year-old died in anaheim, california while inside a hot car with her mother, also found unconscious in the vehicle. >> our thanks to dana with that report. nbc meteorologist ryan hanihan tracking the latest that to watch plus the new tropical system in the gulf could become a hurricane. we're watching that as it moves towards texas and louisiana. >> that's exactly right, richard. that's the big story here, this tropical system in the gulf of mexico. it's still fairly disorganized right now. you can see here this area of red and pink off the coast of mexico to the south of texas that is what we're watching that is expected to become a tropical storm or a hurricane in the coming days. right now it's about 320 miles

to the south-southeast or to the mouth of the rio grande. winds 50 miles per hour. it's moving slowly, only about 5 miles per hour. it is expected to accelerate as it comes to the north. this is the expected track. you can see here by wednesday morning at 7:00 a.m., it's just to the south of houston and gale-force winds. winds of 80 miles per hour. the cone stretches from houston to just west of new orleans. so by wednesday, later into the afternoon, evening, we could be looking at a hurricane making landfall somewhere in the upper texas or the louisiana coast. we'll be watching this one very carefully over the coming days. we get to name 85. 89 in san antonio. and 85 today in new orleans.
