tens of thousands of people are evacuated in california as a fast-moving wildfire grows out of control and firefighters are worried now about new threats today which could lead to even more danger. grueling manhunt. authorities vow to search relentlessly for a man who opened fire on a kentucky highway. a royal comeback the princess of wales giving an unexpected update on her recovery following her cancer diagnosis earlier this year, when she could return to royal public duty. and a.i. phone? apple unveiling its new products today. why the new changes are generating a whole lot of buzz. we have a lot to talk about today on a busy monday. we begin with that race to contain growing wildfires in the west as evacuees in danger zone

rush to safer grounds. >> they began packing up their cars and evacuating this weekend they're trying to escape the line fire, cal fire said it's scorched more than 20,000 acres and only 3% contained. in nevada, the davis fire is burning near reno. take a look at this video, you can see this group of horses fleeing the flames, fire officials say that fire is currently zero percent contained. >> steve patterson is with us in california, where the line fire is burning, steve, there have been no reported deaths luckily from this fire, i know cal fire said thousands of structures are under threat right now and people are evacuating. how are things going out there? are people taking it pretty seriously? >> reporter: they are. 35,000 homes in fact under threat from this fire burning really on multiple fronts, there's great concern, great

worry, evacuation orders under way, we got a fresh bunch of evacuation orders, how erratic this fire is even though firefighters are doing all they can, besides the thousands of firefighters, sorry, the thousands of homes that are under threat we've heard no homes have burned, nobody has died as you mentioned, three firefighters injured battling the fire that's because of how treacherous this terrain is, you might be able to see the fire burning off in the distance behind me it's covered in smoke. this fire has laid down over the stretch of canyons where there are homes but firefighters able to contain it there. it's not been driven by wind as much as it has been fueled by heat. it's incredibly hot again today. over 100 degrees. all of this certainly fueling the flames, incredibly difficult to battle in deep terrain.

thankfully, again, wind hasn't been a problem but that doesn't mean the fire won't change direction. >> steve, in terms of the forecast, what's the immediate concern in the coming days for fire officials? >> reporter: thankfully it's all good news, less wind, lower temperatures, higher humidity, in fact we saw some of that last night, firefighters said they made some significant progress it's why they're any containment on this fire whatsoever, up to 3%, small number, better than nothing, though, firefighters expect that will increase over the next few days. back to you. >> steve patterson, thank you. on the other side of the country, texas and louisiana are bracing for a hurricane, right now tropical storm francine is churning slowly. >> it's gaining strength by the minute with record warm water temperatures acting as rocket

fuel. nbc news meteorologist bill karins is tracking the system for us. this storm feels like it popped out of nowhere. talk to us about what you're seeing. how strong could this storm get? >> reporter: lot of times don't get a name people don't pay close attention. this has a name, now a tropical storm, it's gotten stronger, getting closer to northern texas coast, then where it's going to go, the hurricane center making its way to louisiana, the rest of today and tomorrow for prep time, could be anywhere in the range of a strong tropical storm, worse case is a strong tropical 2. that's an update you want to do a lot of prep for. coastal louisiana, they may want

to get out of town. lot of work to be done. an isolated chance of or the may doe toward the end of the week. wednesday is the day we expect the landfall. hurricane watches are up, and again, some of this could be adjusted depending on where the center goes, we'll see about a five-foot storm surge. it's very unpopulated and the rainfall totals even far inland this could be problematic even new orleans could possibly see anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of rain. that's always an issue. >> bill karins, thank you authorities are relentlessly searching for the gunman that opened fire on an interstate in kentucky. >> authorities say joseph couch fired into traffic south of lexington, hitting 12 cars, seriously injuring 5 people. one witness describing the

situation. >> we heard like a very loud noise, sounded almost like an explosion, when we both jumped up in our seats, and at first i thought maybe a rock had flown through my window or something. >> adrienne broaddus in london, kentucky, for us. kentucky police just posted a photo on facebook, saying the search continues. this looks like an enormous job to do. where do things stand? >> reporter: kate, it's a huge task. we're talking about thousands of acres and our viewers can see it from that photo there, at last check, investigators told us they were considering bringing in robots to assist with this search and they're also considering looking at an old salt mine, kate, according to the mayor, this salt cave is

extremely deep, at one point people had to crawl on their bellies in order to get through that cave. authorities have focused their attention at that area, exit 49, for those familiar with this area off of interstate 75, that's where that shooting happened on saturday. we've learned much more about this 32-year-old suspect, investigators are looking for. according to court documents joseph couch sent a text message to someone about 30 minutes before that shooting, saying in part, quote, i'm going to kill a lot of people. well, try at least. he sent another message saying i'll kill myself afterwards. we also know according to investigators he purchased the weapon ar-15 on the same day of the shooting, kate. >> all right, adrienne in kentucky, thank you. let's move overseas now, breaking news out of london today, about the health of

$1200. >> all right, brian, thank you. we're following breaking news in the murder case of four university of idaho students the suspect's trial will now be moved to another city. >> a judge granted the request from bryan kohberger's defense team, in the ruling the judge cited concerns about getting a fair trial in the small town of moscow. given the publicity in the case. the courthouse said it's too small and not enough security to handle the trial. the new location will be determined by the idaho supreme court. >> joining us now is danny cevallos, how big of a win is this for the defense, could the change of venue delay things? >> it's a big win in that these motions are not often granted, in that sense it's a victory for the defense and it was a hard-fought victory because they retained several different, very qualified experts who testified at least one over several hours i watched and listened to and these were experts who presented

a compelling case. these motions are rarely won. a victory in terms of increasing the likelihood of winning the case of getting a not guilty? that's a bit of a mixed bag, that's hard to say, because the strongest criminal case it doesn't matter where the prosecution puts it on, a jury biased against the defendant or a jury that's never heard of the defendant, so arguably if this is a less biased jury against the defendant the prosecution still needs to meet their case burden of beyond a reasonable doubt, they seem to believe that they can do that. >> danny the trial location may be different, but all the ascension is going to be same how much does this actually change things for the prosecutors and the defense. >> not so much of jury pool, what the defense has done is taken away the prosecution's

make it arexvy. we have new developments today in the officer-involved shooting late last night in san jose. police now confirming the man involved has died. nbc barry's thom jensen is at the crime scene at center plaza tracking the story for us. yes, this is in the center plaza. here you can see a lot of the gunshots came here. the gunfire was about 930 last night outside the 7-eleven. and this family wash and pure water. also a salon and spa here. this is at the 4200 block of center road, which is approximately right at center road and san gregorio way. san jose pd was called here at about 930. like i said, when numerous people called 911 reporting a man randomly firing a gun at bystanders. sj pd says when

officers arrived, they confronted the man who still had a gun and at least one officer fired and hit the suspect. at least one time, witnesses told nbc. bay area they heard ten or more gunshots after police arrived and the suspect immediately went down in front of the 7-eleven. here a san jose man who was resting in his truck told me he woke up to the initial suspect gunfire, only to find out that his good friend was shot. so he went into rescue mode. you get to the hospital? yeah, i took him to the hospital. and your truck and his truck. right now. jackson. how's he doing? i'm not sure. where was he shot? well, he got he got his hands over here and over here. victor marquez drove his friend sonora to regional medical center on north jackson avenue. and he said the whole time sonora was holding his neck and jaw area, trying to stop the bleeding. san jose pd told us in an update email just a short time ago this morning that victor's friend is in critical

but stable condition. but once again, the suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital. according to police, no officers were injured. we hope to have more information on what transpired and why all this came about, and we could get that in a press conference that's been called at san jose pd headquarters for about 3:00 this afternoon. we're still waiting for a final time on that, but i'm sure we'll have more on nbcbayarea.com. and then later on this afternoon and evening on nbc, bay area news in san jose. thom jensen, nbc bay area news. tom, thank you so much for the update. well, after a chaotic weekend of late night sideshows, bay area law enforcement are now vowing to work together. in at least two cases, video posted to social media showed cars hitting people during sideshows late saturday and early sunday morning. oakland police are trying to identify those who attended and participated in one of those sideshows on hegenberger and edgewater, police say that's where a driver

lost control and hit spectators in the crowd. another sideshow also shut down traffic on the bay bridge late saturday night. oakland council member noel gallo says more needs to be done to curb these problems. at the end of the day, we do need to enforce the laws that we have and because it's out of control and i have many people that are coming into oakland from outside of oakland, and we're allowing these individuals to get away with that. oakland police warn sideshow participants could have their cars towed and held for up to 30 days in the north bay, firefighters are slowly gaining control of a fast moving wildfire in lake county. so far, the boyles fire has burned 30 structures in the city of clear lake. many of them homes. this fire started yesterday afternoon east of highway 53. it quickly burned more than 70 acres. as of this morning, the fire now 30% contained with all forward progress stopped, evacuation orders remain in place for some

communities. fortunately, no injuries reported. no word yet on the cause of this wildfire, but we've got another warm day shaping up. but cooler temps are ahead. here's meteorologist kari hall with our forecast. today we're looking at highs in the mid 80s for the south bay san jose reaching a high of 84 degrees. but it's still going to be hot today in morgan hill with a high of 91 degrees. and we're also going to see a lot of low 90s from danville to pleasanton up to 93 in antioch today in oakland, some mid 70s. it's going to be comfortable and comfortably cool for half moon bay up to 66 degrees in redwood city. expect a high of 79. and in san francisco, some lower 70s. there downtown and in the mission district, the outer sunset stays in the mid 60s and will be slow to clear from that fog, with mid 80s expected from santa rosa to novato. napa today 87 degrees and will be cooling down over the next few days. so we'll take a look at that forecast coming up next. we'll see you soon. get all the day's

striking him with a baton following a traffic stop. federal trial for three of those offices who have pleaded not guilty to federal charges. the remaining two officers in the video already pled guilty to those federal charges and could testify in this trial. separately all five officers in the video have pleaded not guilty to state charges including second degree murder. the funeral for nhl star johnny gaudreu and his brother matthew was held today. at a church outside philadelphia. the siblings died last week when they were struck by a suspected drunk driver. john was known as johnny hockey and played for columbus blue jackets. matthew was a hockey star at boston college. countless members of the hockey community played tribute including the nhl commissioner. and wnba rookie angel reese

is ending her first season early after a wrist injury, the chicago sky forward hurt her wrist in game friday against the los angeles sparks, she posted on social media over the weekend that she's filled with emotions over the injury. reese has already set some wnba records this season. she's one of two rookies to be named to all-star team this summer. vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump both making final preparations now for the first presidential debate tomorrow night. >> later today, vice president harris will head to philadelphia where the debate is being held after prepping for the last five days in pittsburgh, the former president is holding prep sessions of his own today at his mar-a-lago estate in florida, he's expected to travel to philadelphia tomorrow. >> joining us now nbc news white house correspondent mike memoli in washington, d.c., and here with us vaughn hillyard. the former president doesn't do a lot of debate prep, he doesn't do the formal stuff but we've been hearing he has been.

police in miami are investigating the traffic stop detainment of an nfl star hours before the first game of the season, miami dolphins wide receiver tyreek hill was handcuffed by officers and placed faced down on the road outside the home team's stadium yesterday, the dolphins say hill was pulled over for a traffic incident, the 30-year-old was released and played in the football game. after the touchdown, hill made reference to the traffic stop. marissa parra is following this story. marissa, what's the nfl and hill himself saying about this incident? >> reporter: we did hear from hill himself, he said in part, he's unsure what he did to warrant the incident of being put in handcuffs. unsure what would have happened if he's not the football star he's right now. that video recorded because he's

recognizable to sports fans. a little bit of what we heard when he addressed reporters on this incident. >> i don't want to bring race into it, but sometimes, it gets kind of iffy when you do. what if i wasn't tyreek hill? >> he also added that he's grateful for the support that he's received since this, especially from his teammates. in terms of what we're hearing from the nfl, the spokesperson told our affiliate, the lead has been in contact with the dolphins, ellison, but they've declined to comment any further. >> marissa, what have we heard from the police department about this incident in. >> i'll start first with what we're hearing from the south florida pbaa voice for law enforcement, they maintain hill was not, quote, immediately cooperative with the officers on scene, in their statement they
