forward. right now, at five, facing off for the first time, vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump taking the debate stage tonight in philadelphia. we're live this morning breaking down what's at stake less than two months from election day. a push for new funding. the south bay program now hoping to expand its 24 hour crisis response team. and a sea of red at levi's, the faithful packing the stadium for the 49ers season opener. the wave of emotion for rookie ricky pearsall and the first responders who helped save his life. this is today in the bay it's a really nice moment there. we'll bring you more in. just a bit. good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we'll keep you updated. what's happening on the roads with mike coming up in just a bit. but first, let's start out with that forecast for you. this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. i like the weather we're having lately. yeah, it's been warmley, so it's going to be nice to have a cool
5:02 am
down. and that begins today. so we're looking right now at temperatures in the upper 50s. 54 in danville. as you're heading out the door and it is 55 in sonoma while san mateo is at 53 degrees. nice and cool start. here's a look at our highs for today. no more upper 80s. no more upper 90s. we are only seeing a few spots farther north, feeling some of that warmth continue, but we're mostly in the 70s today. san jose's high 75 degrees. that is going to be just perfect for today and we'll see more temperatures like this over the next few days. so we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, you are looking at a hazard on the bay bridge. yeah, we're looking for the hazard itself as folks travel west into the tunnel toward treasure island, yerba buena island. reports of an overheated car. it sounds like everything's in its clearing stages. there was steam, not smoke. and it sounds like everybody should be just about off at that exit without any slowing on our sensors or our live camera. that's good stuff. getting into
5:03 am
the city, the rest of the north bay, contra costa county, throughout the east bay. these are early starts for the commute. haven't shown any unusual traffic flow out of the altamont pass. just that little bit of slowing eases up right after north phelan avenue south bay, south county all moving nicely. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, to decision 2024 and a make or break moment in the race for president. want to give you a live look this morning over in philadelphia. that's where tonight, vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump facing off in what may be their one and only debate among tonight's key issues the economy and foreign affairs. today, in the bay's brie jackson live in washington for us this morning and brie give us a better idea of what we really can expect, because a lot is at stake tonight. that's right. good morning. marcus. well, you can expect a fiery debate. allies of former president trump see tonight's debate as a pivotal moment to turn the corner for vice president harris's post nomination honeymoon, as they're calling it, and the harris campaign. they say she has
5:04 am
studied past past debate clips of trump, and she's focusing on ways to try to provoke him. vice president kamala harris arriving in philadelphia for her much anticipated debate with former president trump. both candidates seeking to shore up support with voters. we are going to defeat comrade kamala harris, and we are going to win the white house. it's time to turn the page on the divisiveness. it's time to bring our country together to chart a new way forward. a new poll shows more than 60% of likely voters want a major change from president biden. more than half say trump will bring that change, while only 25% say harris will. trump allies touting his strengths over his political rival. i don't think she's too bright. i think donald will do well. he'll talk about his policies and the results of those policies. those
5:05 am
backing harris warn of the dangers of a second trump presidency and say her policies will move the country forward. i do believe kamala harris is going to prevail on that. but we must. we can't forget that trump has an appeal in pennsylvania, and we need to make sure we show up everywhere. the race remains tight. voters in critical battleground states are keeping a close eye on tonight's debate. i tell them not to talk too much. stay on point. and what he needs to do in this election just for her to be her and for her to be honest and tell us what she's going to do for this country. harris and trump meeting in person for the first time today for a high stakes, 90 minute showdown. and police are bracing for protests in philadelphia today with pro-palestinian groups angry with harris's continued support of israel planning to demonstrate. marcus. yeah, certainly. one to watch tonight
5:06 am
and a lot of people having watch parties. saw that online. all right. we'll be watching. all right. thanks, brie. and you can watch the debate right here on nbc bay area. our coverage begins at 5 p.m. the debate starts at 6:00. and then join us for a special edition of nbc bay area news at eight. well, a lot of folks watch this last night. niners fans, of course, you saw. what a night for the faithful. the 49ers got the season off to a great start at levi's, but the game included a touching reunion on the field with niners rookie ricky pearsall on the sidelines. he and the team acknowledged two women who helped save his life the day he was shot in san francisco's union square. the surgeon who treated him, and the police sergeant who was first on the scene, sergeant joelle harrell, attended in full uniform alongside doctor lucy kornblit in the 49ers hat you saw there, who is a surgeon at san francisco general. pearsall gave each jersey with his name and number on it to the two, as they were honored as frontline

heroes of the game. our ginger conejero saab will have a closer look at the night out in our next half hour. we'll also have game highlights coming up a little bit later in this newscast. as for the teenager accused of shooting pearsall. he's due back in juvenile court later today. his appearance is scheduled for 130 this afternoon ahead of the niners game and closing out a busy sports weekend. a big hit for one south bay spot where a lot of regulars gather. thieves yesterday targeted the office bar in san jose's willow glen in an early morning break-in. surveillance video captured the pair just before 4 a.m. one of the suspects actually seen wearing a security shirt. the owner of the office says not only did they get away with a safe and hundreds of dollars, but they caused some $20,000 in damage. violated. honestly, i feel like someone ransacked my house. this is my business. you know, it's my livelihood. the thieves have not been found. san jose police are asking anyone with

information to contact them. full disclosure the office is owned by a family member. well, follow up for you this morning on the san jose police shooting. we covered all morning yesterday here on today in the bay. authorities revealing the first details about the gunman who died. that drama unfolding sunday night outside of a 7-eleven on center road in yeller. this is where police say 50 year-old roberto rivera died from his injuries yesterday morning. but they also claim that he was determined to have a confrontation with police and was in the process and in the process, shot one bystander who was critically injured. police say rivera was intoxicated and experiencing family problems and was suicidal. happening today in the south bay. new help may be coming when it comes to responding to people in crisis. today in the bay's bob redell live for us this morning. and bob, there's really a big vote right now taking place later today. correct. the san jose city council could vote. marcus and laura to expand non-law

enforcement. crisis response for people who are having a mental health crisis or issues with substance abuse. this would be an expansion of santa clara county's trusted response urgent support team, or trust for short. it launched in november of last year and is intended to de-escalate situations without police involvement. although the teams are trained in behavioral health. they do have the authority to place people on a 72 hour hold for their own safety. if the council agrees, the city would commit up to $450,000 for a one year period. but mayor matt mahan of san jose tells us there are strings attached. the county has to provide annual reporting on how many calls, how long was the wait time? how many times was the team deployed to the field, and what were the outcomes of those calls? so there has to be measurement and transparency and accountability to ensure that people are actually getting hel.
5:10 am
the mayor also tells us that the team has to be up and running in the field by next spring, or the city will pull its $450,000 in funding again, assuming that the city council goes along with this during the vote scheduled for later this afternoon. reporting live. bob redell today in the bay crisis can happen at any moment. all right, bob, thank you. developing now north of the bay area firefighters are making more headway on containing a wildfire that roared through one neighborhood in clear lake on sunday. about half of the 4000 or so evacuation orders have now been lifted. the boyles fire destroyed about 30 homes. still no word about how it started. let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. she's always tracking conditions for us. what about for those firefighters on the front lines? yeah. starting out. cool. this morning, humidity has come up and the wind is light, so we're hoping that we do continue to get more containment today as the weather conditions are pretty favorable at least to start out this morning. but it will still be a very warm day.
5:11 am
not as hot as yesterday, but notice the wind gusts coming up to about 2020 five miles per hour may create some of those erratic conditions that the firefighters have to definitely be more careful of, and tomorrow it will become even more windy. here's a look at our wind gusts forecast across the bay area. we're going to really start to see those winds picking up in santa rosa, san francisco. some of the coastal areas going into tomorrow afternoon and getting even stronger. some of those hilly areas and some of our upper elevations may see gusts 40 to 50mph for tomorrow, which will enhance our fire conditions and that threat that we could see any fires that do develop spread very quickly as the winds increase. but at least the temperatures are going to be coming down today. a much more comfortable day for livermore with highs in the upper 70s. and mike, you've been tracking where we can find some lower gas prices. yeah. trying carey, but after labor day we saw those prices rise, at least at the local stations. i pass on the
5:12 am
way to work a higher lowe's as i look around. cupertino's best price is now 3.99 at area gas and market on stevens creek boulevard. same best in contra costa county. a single report of 3.99. that's under four bucks. barely at clayton gas and wash in concord on clayton road. and that's if you pay cash and in solano county for vallejo, it's 408 at quick stop on springs road. you can track the changes and report the changes for all of us to share at gasbuddy.com. on the roadways, we look at a calm start as we expected five, almost 512. just a couple of seconds as we're looking around the east bay. no problems for highway four, no slowing through antioch and in toward concord and easy drive in the north bay out of vallejo for highway 37 and getting toward that bay bridge, a smooth drive. once that incident cleared on the span itself, a nice drive out of contra costa, county down vasco road to 580 at your minimum of 17 minutes. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. the high speed rail from la to vegas is now one step closer to reality. coming up next on today in the

bay, the new step giving future riders a first look inside what is promised to be america's fastest rail line and protecting kids from social media by raising the minimum age and a big question after last night's 49ers game is cmc even needed? we'll show you one 49ers role player stepping up in a big way to fill the shoes of one of football's top players. he's going to say, put me in. i'm fine. i'm fine.

san jose. we can see the clouds overhead and we're starting out slightly cooler than yesterday. at this time. and it will be a cooler morning and gradually warming as the sky clears. we're staying in the 70s today, and cooler temperatures hang around for a little while. we'll take a look at our 7-day forecast with all of our microclimates coming up in a few minutes. and we're looking at these headlights coming in out of the altamont. this is 580 into dublin. a smooth drive. good amount of cars. it's tuesday. we should see the next 45 minutes. show a heavier volume than yesterday. we'll see if there's anything unusual that you have to deal with coming up. well good morning. very happy tuesday to you. an update on the market monday. maybe not a lot of movement today as we wait for tomorrow's inflation data. chargepoint. pardon me. confirmed what we had been reporting earlier that it would be laying off more staff. they

did a good job of coming in and filling his void and doing his job to allow other guys to get open and allow us to run our offense. that's nice. okay. that was fair. mccaffrey at this point, though still questionable for next sunday. that's when the niners take on their old friend sam darnold in minnesota against the vikings. off to a good start. nice. after the game they interviewed the mason. and he said i went up to mccaffrey and said i don't know how you do this all game because i saw a lot of it is it's a lot. there you have it. it is. okay, very nice start, though. yeah, very nice start to the day too. oh yes. nice and cool. now we're in for a lot of changes over the next few days. we are going to see a couple of cooler systems dropping into the bay area and giving us some relief in the inland valleys that have been dealing with some sweltering heat. and in san jose, we're right now starting out at 62 degrees upper 50s for walnut creek, san francisco, now at 53 degrees. let's head to walnut creek, where we are going to see temperatures in the upper 50s
5:22 am
for the next three hours, and then a few more peeks of sunshine. by 9 to 10:00, it will be slow to clear today, which will keep those temperatures down. so at lunchtime it is a comfortable 68 degrees, but notice the wind as we go throughout the day. it's going to be at about 10 to 15mph. may get a little bit more breezy this evening as those temperatures drop, and we're looking at some low 60s by 8:00 this evening, taking the dog out for one last walk before you go to bed. we're going to see temperatures in the mid 70s for martinez and dublin today. that's the high temperature and it's going to be in the mid to upper 70s for much of the north bay. still pretty warm for clear lake and ukiah with some upper 80s there. compare that to the 68 in san francisco, in the 64 in half moon bay. tomorrow we're seeing a few of those temperatures coming up a degree or two. so we're starting to see a few more upper seconds in fairfield as well as vacaville. while in concord, we'll see a high of 85 and more low 80s for
5:23 am
the north bay, and then a few more degrees in the rise in temperatures heading into thursday. but overall, it's still pretty comfortable and still pretty normal for this time of year. but there will be a system dropping into the north that could bring some rain very close by, and then right behind that, another one moves down the coast. and look at all of that green there for northern california and possibly close to the north bay with at least some light showers. we'll be watching out for those changes as we transition towards a little bit more of a late summer early fall pattern going into early next week. take a look at our 7-day forecast. no more extreme heat, but the thing we'll be watching tomorrow and thursday will be those high winds which could create those fire conditions, as the vegetation is as dry as it gets for this time of year. and then looking at san francisco a lot of 60s and 70s here and possibly some light sprinkles heading into monday. so we'll be watching those changes. and mike, you are checking in on the north bay. yeah, we'll look at

we're already doing. hundreds of south bay businesses now working together to attract more customers. we're going to break down how they're maximizing their power to move the bay area forward. this is today in the bay tuesday is here because it's your monday. i was like, well it's here. good morning to you all. i'm marcus washington, and we're glad you're back here. and i'm laura garcia. you know what's even better? what's that? temperatures are going to drop today. you were saying 75 degrees. that's about perfect. and, you know, i couldn't be more ready for fall. so this is going to be my introduction to some more fall weather and some really comfortable temperatures as we take a live look outside in san francisco. this is where you've had cool weather for quite a while with our microclimates, and it will stay mostly cloudy today at times even misting and drizzling as we stay in the mid 60s for a high and across the bay in oakland.
5:33 am
it will be up to about 69 degrees and 78 degrees in concord. no more upper 80s low 90s will only see that in ukiah and clear lake, and for most of the bay area will be in the mid 70s and in san francisco today, upper 60s. mike, it's traffic tuesday. it's kicking in, kicking in above our heads and location not in concept over here. highway 37. let's take a look at the screen. top of their 37 shows the typical slowing out of vallejo kicked in for highway four. also on the right side of your screen. i want to zoom in, not to the bay bridge where there is slowing on the incline, but no backup yet visible for our camera. this is seen on the reports westbound 580 at the split with the warren freeway. highway 13 disabled vehicles. so there may be a quick traffic break to get that towed from the middle of the roadway. no major problems as you head through oakland and toward piedmont, south bay looking great as well. it's just that feed off of the altamont that keeps coming in for westbound 580. back to you. thanks, mike. well, new

overnight firefighters say an electrical problem sparked a late night fire in a san francisco high-rise. it started a little before 11:00 at night at the ninth floor of a 13 story apartment building in parkmerced. firefighters say the damage is limited mostly to one unit. the flames never spread to neighboring floors. luckily, no one was injured and one tenant now displaced. niners fans waking up this morning feeling just fine. thank you very much. even without one of their star players. the team handled business pretty well last night to kick off the new season, but that was just the start of all the electricity being felt inside. levi's today in the bay ginger conejero saab live for us in san francisco this morning and ginger the faithful were also on their feet last night. for two women who are really heroes. that is correct. good morning, marcus and laura. during the first quarter of last night's game, all eyes were on touching moments between 49ers rookie rookie pearsall and two

women who helped save his life. this happening just over a week after he was shot near union square in an attempted robbery. these hugs say it all. take a look at ricky pearsall showing his gratitude to sfpd sergeant joel harrell, one of the first people to respond to the shooting, and doctor lucy kornblith, a surgeon at zuckerberg san francisco general who helped pearsall recover from his gunshot wound to the chest. pearsall gave both women jerseys with his name and number on it as pearsall, and the crowd honored their heroic efforts after the attempted robbery and shooting. pearsall was put on the football non injury list, but last night he was out on the field giving his team support and showing fans some love and the fans gave it right back. it's a blessing and it's really good to see him. it's good to see them and know that he's going to come back and he really wants to get out there, and i'm glad that the coaches are taking, you know, precautions.
5:36 am
and just to make sure that he's mentally and physically healed. well, the niners go on to beat aaron rodgers and the jets 32 to 19 with big plays from former undrafted free agent jordan mason, who ran for 147 yards and a touchdown in place of christian mccaffrey, who is injured. his 28 carries were the most for any niners player in a regular season game. in 13 years. now, deebo samuel added a two yard touchdown run and jake moody kicked six field goals to help get the niners the win. the niners go on to face the minnesota vikings on sunday. meanwhile, the 17 year old suspect accused of attempted murder and robbery is expected back in court. this afternoon. he is in custody awaiting trial in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. all right. thank you very much, ginger. well, san francisco police so far not revealing the specific injuries suffered by one officer last night. this was while making an arrest. now, it

can sure lose one. nixon lost his debate to kennedy. barack obama lost to mitt romney. and of course, there's the granddaddy of them all biden losing not just the debate, but his candidacy. president biden had prepped for days ahead of time at camp david, but mortified democrats with his poor performance. so he'll just watch it on tv like you and me. the president is going to watch the debate. he's looking forward to watching the debate, as i'm not going to preview or confirm any conversations between the president and the vice president. as you know, they speak often. the president is incredibly proud of the vice president. i just don't have anything to share beyond that. but he will be watching. we'll be watching in new york. well, one thing you can safely expect tonight, harris, the experienced prosecutor cross-examining trump, a convicted felon. this is an area where she is very comfortable. the debates hosted by abc. but you can watch it right here on nbc bay area. our special coverage starts at 5:00

this evening. not a lot of campaigning to tell you about this morning. only tim walz was out there on the road speaking to voters in reno. we expect him to debate jd vance in october. other news, high ranking republicans at the capitol are repeating a rumor that immigrants in ohio are stealing people's pets to eat them. there is no evidence of this, but take a look at this tweet. this is from the leadership of the senate judiciary committee. there is no more important or storied or august committee in the united states, and it is publishing clearly a ai faked pictures, reinforcing the idea that foreigners are eating our cats. there's a very big haitian community in ohio, particularly in the town of springfield, who are here legally, as the u.s. has given those immigrants time to stay under the federal humanitarian program for migrants. springfield police say the claims about the pets isn't true, but our colleague at david ingraham was able to track down the source of the claim. it

5:41 am
and we are seeing so many fires burning. take a look at our near surface smoke model. i mean, the plumes of smoke coming up out of all of those fires from the line fire to also that fire that started yesterday near the san bernardino airport has been putting up a lot of plumes of smoke and causing really hazardous air quality. but the good thing is that we are looking forward to some cooler temperatures, some better weather conditions. but we'll really have to watch the wind in those areas. so as we take a look at what we're seeing here in the bay area also a cool down as our temperatures for the most part stay in the 60s and 70s a few low 80s for spots like morgan hill, san martin and up toward vacaville. but we are in for at least a 10 degrees drop in some of our highs for today. and mike, now you're seeing that commute picking up in san jose right on schedule, just as we predicted. we have 101 northbound, a few more cars visible in this narrow shot for

business to one part of the south bay. as soon as today, san jose leaders may approve a new improvement district. and even before it's created, some of the businesses there are trying to make a difference in their community. today, in the bay's kris sanchez joins us to explain how a $25 monthly investment may lead to a huge payoff. so you've heard that saying little by little. a little becomes a lot. and some east bay businesses are banking on the fact that $25 a month per business for more than 500 businesses will create a lot of opportunity for change to make that happen. the city council will take the first step toward creating the tully road east ridge business improvement district. let's show you where that's happening. it encompasses more than 500 businesses along tully road between east capitol expressway and highway 101 that includes businesses on quimby road and at east ridge mall as well. many of the businesses have already been working together to make the area better, and work with their council member to secure a $50,000 city grant to use on

maintaining, landscaping, removing trash and graffiti to make that area feel safer and more inviting for customers. the formal creation of the improvement district, though, then grants the additional authority to create a fund. each business would pay into to be able to pay for services for whatever they see necessary from safety to beautification to marketing, whatever their community specific needs are. we broke it down to like something like $25 a month for certain businesses. so it wouldn't be breaking the bank, but it would also be improving the area. it's a very flexible vehicle for property owners, small business owners to basically get self-organized and pool their resources to make strategic investments. the council is expected to move forward with the tully road east ridge business improvement district. next step is setting a public meeting for october first, then a public hearing for november 5th in order to hash out the fee collection for the businesses.

now, san jose does have other improvement districts, one in the willow glen neighborhood and then also one downtown. and the mayor points to that one for a story of success. he told me that the investments there to make the downtown area cleaner and safer, increased foot traffic on nights and weekends to 120% of pre-pandemic levels. so it seems to be working there makes a difference to the small businesses, too. thanks, chris. we t look at this. no, this is not the scene from a new horror film. this is actually new video of bats in the south bay. a crew found them last night. this is in the docks near san jose's solano park. now, this all comes in the wake of recent warnings from santa clara county vector control, reminding people to avoid those bats. each year, some bats will test positive for rabies, including one last month over in palo alto. it's not uncommon, but it is about 1% of the population that does have rabies. it's

nothing to be concerned about for the public. bats aren't going to be attacking us, but if you do come across a bat that's, you know, maybe injured or on the ground, it's highly advised to stay back, keep your distance. now, if you see a bat rather than approaching it, you are advised to immediately report it to fish and wildlife rangers. do we really need to be telling you to stay away from bats? i remember as a kid, you know, swimming in the pool in my grandmother's backyard. bats would always come in and just like. and they would just say, just stay still. and then they would come, boom, boom. they would get out. a lot of the state is seeing that. it's crazy right now. all right. well trending this morning nbc's american ninja warrior not only produced another million dollar winner last night, but it also produced the new first show, the first a new first for the show. i should say that it is, you know what? this is just the fourth time, 16 seasons someone has won ninjas million dollar prize. mark barger actually has those details for us, but this is what you call muscle memory.

the memory of winning $1 million last season was very fresh for vance walker, and a very speedy climb up ninja warrior 75 foot rope. vance walker hit the buzzer. someone's winning a million dollars. had him on the verge of a repeat. and i knew that i was the fastest rope climber there. but i also hadn't trained nearly as much between season 15 and 16 as i usually d. the teenager, born with cerebral palsy still had to wait out the last two ninjas. first, his buddy and training partner caleb bergstrom, and then he climbed. and i remember turning around being like, did he beat me? turns out bergström's time was 1.3 seconds slower than walker's. that left no immunity as the final climber, but he also came up short. oh just runs out. i came so close. the margin made walker the first back to back million dollar winner in the show's 16 year history, and
5:53 am
being able to not only win, but be the first person to do it multiple times, it was. it was amazing. walker says he's investing most of his winnings, although a second car might be in the offing and he may try for a three peat. i'm coming back as long as the show lets me this is something i'm not ready to give up yet, but the victory left walker very ready to celebrate. mark barger, nbc news. wow, i didn't know you could keep coming back and trying to. yeah, people come back year after year, 16 years even. i was actually at a recording of one that aired during the olympics. so it's really cool. we can hear that. like participating, participating. yeah, i was i was in the audience going like i was not in the first thing. i would have been like, boom, oops. marcus. this new series, american ninja warrior fan, right? i bet they make it look easy, though, because if you actually tried it, you'd be like, oh no. yeah. no kidding. yeah. oh my gosh. a great day to get out though. yes so excited

about this weather. yeah it's going to be cooler today. and the valleys have really been feeling that heat. we've had so many days in the 90s and triple digits. but we don't have to worry about starting out cool wh upper 50s in walnut creek, it is 61 alto and 63 in san jose, while san francisco starts out the morning at 53 degrees. nice and cool. let's talk about our highs today in milpitas. look for a high of 76 and 81 in morgan hill. that's going to be about ten degrees lower than yesterday with antioch in the low 80s. but we're mostly seeing a lot of 70s and even upper 60s for oakland today with the breezy wind in san mateo, 68 degrees for that high temperature, 64 in daly city and in half moon bay, san francisco in the mid to upper 60s and north bay. highs in the upper 70s for sonoma, santa rosa 77 degrees and upper 80s for ukiah and clear lake. so the high pressure easing up, that's allowing for a couple of low

pressure systems, a couple of storm systems to move across the pacific northwest. but the next low that will dip down and roll down the coastline could bring down some rain across northern california early next week. and we'll be watching out for not only cooler temperatures, but some rain very close by. take a look at napa taking it out. ten days will be in the upper 80s, so a slight warm up between thursday and friday, but then it will come down a little bit for the weekend and then check out monday. with that low coming in, we'll stay in the 60s throughout the day. first day in quite a long time. we'll see temperatures like that and then going through the 7-day forecast with some milder weather, more seasonable temperatures for this time of year. once again, we've seen a lot of 90s and triple digits. none of that for at least the next week. and along the coast and in san francisco, even cooler here with some mist and drizzle, low clouds and fog with a bit more sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures tomorrow through the end of the week. mike, you are seeing folks
