correspondent hallie jackson. good morning to both of you. they never meet in person these two candidates. let's talk about the stakes of the debate. the latest round of polls essentially after all that up and down, this is a tide race. it's anyone's ball. how important is this debate? >> savannah, think about it this way, this is one the last big events on the 2024 election calendar. okay. so this is huge. we saw in june how monumental, how impactful a debate could be. so this is going to be a critical test for both of these candidates. it comes, as you say, new round of polls show this race is all tied up. nearly a third of voters saying they want to know more about kamala harris. vast majority of voters, saying, savannah, they want a change candidate. right now donald trump is winning with those voters. so the challenge for kamala harris is to try to prove that she can be the change candidate, the challenge for donald trump is to try to hold to on to that and of course try to tie her to the biden administration as

peter was just talking about. this race, tight as a tick. >> piece by piece, kamala harris, she may be hoping more undiscipline and for some people less pleasant donald trump shows up. but he's a very skilled debater. so what's the plan and what's the strategy there? >> he's done far more presidential general election debates than she has. this is her first one in this general election spotlight. one top democratic strategist perhaps the strategy is to let donald trump in essence, be donald trump. but remember, the former president in that first debate with president biden let president biden really put a nail in the coffin of his campaign and that presidential ticket here. for kamala harris, she's got to lay out her vision for what she wants to do in the country, explain her policy positions are. she has to make sure in my conversations with people in the democratic orbit that she doesn't come off as too overprepared. she's been hunkered down in pittsburgh getting ready for this debate. what will people see? they'll see short pieces here and there of what that debate highlights were. and then this big audience for

her, twice as many people tuned into the first debate as did the democratic national convention. this is a huge stage for her to try to make her case. >> this is where donald trump wants to try to define kamala harris. >> that's right. he wants to link her to the biden administration. so her challenge is to walk that fine line, to be able to say, look, i'm going to offer slightly different administrative style. she hasn't clearly enumerated that yet. for donald trump, talking to his allies, they say do not bring donald trump on truth social. bring the disciplined donald trump from the june debate. i'm told that's the plan. will that version of donald trump show up? we have to wait and see. there's also a lot of concern, savannah, about his potentially engaging in personal attacks. his allies say that just doesn't work. i'll be watching to see how does he address his biggest weakness, the issue of reproductive rights. so far he hasn't ginn a clear message on that point. will he tonight? >> she'll be ready to take on that issue. it will be an interesting debate both policy, substance and style as well. kristen, hallie, you ready for a

big night? >> we're ready. we have our coffee. >> the debate is moderated by abc news and hosted by abc news, but we'll simulcast it right here on nbc at 8:00 p.m. eastern time. and of course, nbc news now. there is some breaking news overnight tied to an issue that's likely to be addressed at that debate. the war the middle east. israel carrying out a deadly air strike in a humanitarian area of gaza. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is following that story for us. hey, richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this air strike took place in an area which is a designated safe area. this is where gazans have been told to go by the israeli government. and this strike took place among a very sandy location, very little infrastructure. people are living in tents. if you look at the size of the craters, they are about 20 feet deep. and local civil defense authorities say that at least 20

of these tents were completely wiped out, that at least 40 people were killed. the israeli government says that it did carry out this strike, but that it targeted a hamas command and control structure and that several militants were there at the time. hoda? >> all right. richard engel for us on that story. richard, thank you very much. we turn to the newly released police body cam video of a controversial arrest of tyreek hill. the miami dolphins wide receiver was pulled over and handcuffed just outside of hard rock stadium before sunday's season-opening game. and hill sat down with nbc's jesse kirsch to talk about what happened from his perspective. jesse, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. tyreek hill describes the moment he was handcuffed, shares what he meant with his touchdown celebration referencing the incident. and hill tells me he hopes moving forward he can work with police after this ordeal. >> i'm getting arrested. i'm getting arrested! >> reporter: miami-dade police

investigation and placed one officer on administrative duties but did not id them. hours later, hill scored a 80-yard touchdown in the dolphin's season-opening win. celebrating like this after the td with a mock handcuffing on the field. what message were you hoping to send with that celebration? >> like i said, you got to learn how to laugh and have a good time. >> reporter: some of hill's teammates stopped to help. one of them defensive lineman ka lays you campbell was also temporarily detained. >> that's one of the dolphin's star players. >> reporter: hill believes the incident could have ended differently if he was not a superstar athlete. >> worst case scenario, could have been shot. i would have been locked up. >> reporter: the dolphins have called the police officer's actions towards players, quote, overly aggressive and violent. a representative of the union representing the officer on administrative duties says that hill was, quote, very uncooperative and that led to

his being, quote, redirected to the ground. the union adding the officer who was put on administrative duties is a roughly 25-year veteran of the department. savannah? >> jesse, thank you very much. all right. 7:14. craig joins the table. good morning, craig. >> good morning, hoda and savannah. good morning to you as well. folks, while you were still sleeping, likely, a historic mission lifted off from the kennedy space center early this morning carrying an all-civilian crew that will conduct their own high-risk space walk. nbc's tom costello has made his way to his second or third home the kennedy space center. so tom, so much happening in space these days. this is not to be confused with the boeing starliner mission, though, right? >> reporter: absolutely you're right. there is a lot happening in space right now. this is jared isaacman's mission. you may remember the billionaire who has already raised hundreds of millions of dollars for st. jude children's hospital. he's already been on one mission. now the second one. this one is very high stakes.

will be open to the vacuum of space with everyone suited up. they talked about it here on today. >> it will be about a two-hour operation overall. all of us will get suited in these brand-new space suits before we vent the spacecraft and go outside. >> reporter: to prepare, they have been training for two and a half years. from nauseating centrifuge spinning to survival training to skydiving at the air force academy where we caught up with them. why do this? why do we need to go into space? >> i mean, there are questions that we've been asking ourselves since the dawn of civilization, right? that we don't know the answers to. and the universe is to big. >> reporter: and something else that's big. isaacman's first mission, inspiration 4, raised a staggering $260 million for st. jude children's hospital. >> we've raised millions since with polaris dawn and will continue to do so throughout the duration of the polaris program.

>> reporter: this is a five-day mission splashing down, we think, in the atlantic ocean on day six. if they run into trouble, they cannot go into the space station. that's not even an option. they are pretty much on their own. one other risky element. they will be traveling through the radiation belt. these are two highly charged radiation belts. and they will be watching very carefully how much radiation exposure they have and then what the health impact might be down the road. craig? >> all right. tom costello, fingers crossed. keep us posted, buddy. thank you. al has the rest of the forecast and action in the gulf. >> that's right. we're watching tropical storm francine right now. 15 miles south, southwest of cameron, louisiana. 65 miles an hour winds. it's moving slowly northwest at 5 miles per hour. we have hurricane warnings and watches for much of the louisiana coast. tropical storm watches for texas. as we make our way into mississippi, we are watching this making landfall sometime wednesday afternoon as possibly a category 2 storm. areas to the east of this, though, will be in that more

dangerous quadrant. we have to worry about tornadoes and such to the east of new orleans and mobile, alabama. then it continues its way up into the mississippi river valley. if there is any good news for that, we need the rain in the mississippi river. but the winds will be a big, big problem. strongest guests topping 90 miles per hour. outages and damages. and, of course, that wind pushes that wall of water 5 to 10 feet of storm surge possible. from cameron to morgan city, on to grand aisle where it's 4 to 7 feet. we're going to be watching for that. again, they have already gotten a lot of rain in the last week in the central gulf. there is a moderate to strong risk for flooding stretching from baton rouge to new orleans because of rain fall rates. 2 to 4 inches per hour. storm fall totals up to 2 12 inches. so that most likely makes flooding a real big possibility out west. we have fire weather warnings and watches and red flag

what do you think that means? >> reporter: well, it's interesting. that short phrase, staying cancer free, has been one of the elements of the film that has really been analyzed and overanalyzed in the last few hours since that film dropped. we are told behind the scenes please don't assume that that means the princess is telling us she is cancer free, that the cancer is behind her. and, of course, any of us who have experienced cancer or family members that have had it know that even once you are through the treatment, there is always that little voice in the back of your mind saying, has it gone forever? will it return? i think that's the message, that, yes, she's out of the really dangerous period, but it's not back to normal. of course, chemotherapy itself takes a long time to recover, for the body to recover, so there is a road ahead. >> the film is so extraordinary. i think it's fair to say we have never seen anything like this coming out of the royal family.

it is beautiful and intimate. you see these moments between her and william. how is that going over? and what was the thinking behind that? >> you're so right that it was beautiful and intimate. i have been thinking this morning that it has a rather american feel about it. it feels to us brits who are used to our royals being a bit more buttoned up and stiff upper live, it feels quite hollywood and very, very glossy, very emotional. and the content of it, talking about being loved and loving your family, seeing william and kate with these public displays of affection, that's not something we're used to. we're used to seeing harry and meghan hold hands. but william and kate have always been much more private, less able and willing to show each other that affection. i think a lot of people have really enjoyed and embraced that idea of seeing them so emotional with each other. but it's taking a little bit of getting used to for us brits. >> wow. as americans, we approve that message.

he's saying the media attention in this small community is too hot. he's saying there were logistical concerns. during this jury selection. essentially, they don't have the court staff. he's citing security concerns. but the family is furious at this because they're saying all of that could have been decided months ago, and he sat on this motion for eight months before deciding it. so why do this now? they say they're incredibly disappointed. they wanted to come to trial every day, and we still don't know where the trial will happen. >> we don't know where it is. so sofbly this delays it further. what happens next? >> right. so the trial is set for june of 2025. but if a new judge comes in, and the judge said, give it to somebody else. if the new judge comes in, they can set their own timeline. remember, there's a number of pending motions still going on including his efforts to get the death penalty off the table. >> is that unusual? the trial has to move somewhere else but the judge goes with the case. >> yes. usually these motions fail, but when they win, everything stays is same, prosecution, defense and judge. this is highly unusual. woel see what the courts do here. >> laura, thank you. >> yep.

grandparents' history. but i write fiction. that's what i do. i'm a story teller. i have no interest in writing a memoir. and my dad yesterday reading it for the third time. eddy, i don't remember that happening. yeah, dad, because it didn't happen. i made it up. >> he's like fact checking. it's a novel, dad. it is a novel. i want to say, i love this. it is delightful. it's told from the perspective of a 12-year-old boy, who maybe has some connection to you. >> yep. >> tell me about the process of this and what made you want to tell this particular story. >> when i was in film school, there was a film called "the 400 blows." the coming of age film. it is the type of movie i said, that's why i want to be a film maker. i want to tell those types of films. over 30 years i've been thinking one day i will write that screen play. covid hits and i say, this is the time. but we didn't know when we would be able to go back into production. i always had this notion that one day i would try my hand at a novel.

so i thought, maybe this is the story to try as a novel. and once i got started, you know, i had never written before. i was nervous about whether or not i could do it. i fell in love with the process. and, you know, so -- >> it seems to come so naturally. it is an easy read, just a delightful read. and it is very poignant because i understand during covid, during that pandemic, you were talking to your mom a lot, and you started getting her memories, which we very much see in this book, which turns out to be kind of a mother-son story. >> it turned into a very different book than the book i thought i was going to write. it really is. it is the story of this kid as he's turning 13 at the end of that summer having to break up with his mom. at a time when she needs him the most. the reason the story morphed into that because i was speaking to my mom every day and rather than say, what did you watch on tv last night, what did you have for dinner? i started asking her very

specific questions. what do you remember about the day you graduated high school. and that story ends up in the book. when they go to donahues up on lexington avenue. you know, what do you remember about, you know, when you and dad -- your first date? and all of those kind of stories started. you know, i would speak to her in the morning and go upstairs to write. and the stories found themselves in the book. >> and she passed. >> she passed, so she never got to read it. yeah. >> she didn't get to read it, but it's so special. but you thought to kind of capture that moment in time with her. >> well, it's -- you know, the book now, and, again, not my intention, but it really is a love letter to her. and, you know, you couldn't help but all of the -- you know, she told me so many stories that i hadn't heard before that i felt like i kind of had to put them into the book. anyhow. >> well, as a mommy who has a little boy, and i can just imagine in a couple years him having to break up with me, i really related to the character. >> it's heart breaking. >> by the way, speaking of heart break, you and your wife kristy

are officially empty nesters. grace and finn out of the house. how is your emotional dealing with this? >> we're three weeks into it. fortunately, we're both busy right now, so we don't have to deal with it. dropoff was obviously very emotional. we both got back to the hotel holding back the tears, and then they just came. but, yeah, what's interesting is, like, this is the next chapter in a new chapter. and, you know, i could feel like creatively i'm bursting. >> yeah. >> so i'm excited. >> by the way, christy, who is an activist but also og supermodel walked in the ralph lauren show with your daughter grace last weekend. >> it was pretty great. >> pride level zero to stratospheric. >> incredible. >> there's christy, and here comes grace right behind her. >> yeah, yeah. >> that's pretty incredible. we love you for "brothers mcmullen." i'm so happy there is a sequel. where are you in the process?
