albums of the year gets zero nominations at the country music awards, the major controversy now brewing online over beyonce's cowboy carter. welcome to "nbc news daily." we start with pivotal moment in the 2024 presidential race, now just hours away, vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump set to debate tonight in philadelphia. not only is the first debate between the two candidates, it will be the first time they've ever met in person. here are some of the rules for when they take the stage, the debate is scheduled for 90 minutes, no live audience, the candidates' microphones will be muted when they're not talking and neither one can have notes or talk with their staff during breaks. joining me now is yamiche alcindor and dasha burns. yamiche, what's harris'

campaign saying about the strategy for tonight? >> reporter: she just wrapped up doing a walk-through, looking at the stage, the big strategy here is, one to introduce herself to americans. they're looking to get specific about what the harris administration would look like. the other thing that she's really looking to do is explain her background, her mother being a child of immigrants but also really needling donald trump, trying to put his flaws on display for the american people. lot of her aides believes he stumbles, he lies profusely, they want to make sure they can get under his skin. she wants to make sure she remains calm and doesn't get pulled into those personal

attacks. >> dasha, former president trump spoke exclusively with nbc news this morning what did he say about the challenges and what his expectations are going into tonight in. >> reporter: yeah, he talked to our colleague garrett haake, saying he's been happy with how his debate prep has been going. trump has been doing more informal policy sessions with advisers, those have become more intense over the last couple of days and he's feeling good after so much the new polling coming out from "the new york times" and others that has positive indicators. looking to take on harris, he said the biggest challenge that she's changed positions over the years but that can be a positive because she's, quote, less believable now. >> dasha burns and yamiche alcindor, thank you both.

firefighters' plans, it doesn't make it easier to fight these fires. >> reporter: one of the things is it's taken care of itself, it's a whole lot cooler than it was yesterday, the unrelenting heat is finally ending, this is probably going to be the last day where we approach 100 degrees, already at something like 93, 94, and it still feels like paradise compared to yesterday. meanwhile the wind is starting to pick up as well, blown some of the air that was behind me, sort of trapped in a dome over us pushing out. that will stoke the flames however in last one gasp before firefighters can get more handle on it with the cooling temperatures, but the terrain is going to be difficult until this fire is put out, part of the solution is what i've been seeing over my left shoulder, helicopters back and forth. doing constant water drops and

retardant drops. before those plumes spawn more fire and push further northeast toward the community centers that's the big concern that we have now, beyond that firefighters doing their best in a slow grind to contain this fire as much as possible. >> hopefully they don't threaten more structures. steve patterson on the fire lines, thank you. the louisiana coast is bracing for hurricane, right now tropical storm francine is churning out in the gulf of mexico and gaining strengths in those warmer waters. it's expected to make landfall as a hurricane tomorrow. heading trait for new orleans. nbc news meteorologist bill karins will have the latest on francine's track in just a moment. but first, though, kathy park in baton rouge, louisiana, a

hurricane warning is in effect for almost the entire louisiana coastline, baton rouge right there in the path. >> reporter: hey there, vicky, folks here in baton rouge, they're no strangers to powerful storms and hurricanes. they're acting quickly, because now we're counting down the hours before francine makes landfall, grocery stores are packed, folks are stocking up on the essentials as they should, also gas stations, we've seen some long lines there, we spoke with one manager said she worried that gas may run out at the pace she was helping customers. of course sandbagging stations across louisiana, certainly a popular spot as well. we spoke with one resident who stocked up on several sandbagses, he said he doesn't want to take any chances.

francine's track. >> reporter: the threat for maybe a strong category 2 or low end 3 major hurricane has significantly diminished because the storm hasn't strengthened. dry air off the coast of mexico into the circulation the center of is the storm a lot of dry air still sitting here. as it moves away from the gulf of mexico, now it should have a window here in next 24 hours to strengthen, the hurricane center has it getting closer to a category 2 hurricane. enough for wind damage at that landfall position, that has been shifting a little bit towards the east and towards new orleans over the last 12 to 18 hours, numerous -- this black line is the forecast from the hurricane center, the other models are east to that, that would put the new orleans area in that dirty quadrant we call it, lot of

squalls and strong winds, power outages and maybe even isolated tornadoes. new orleans is under a tropical storm warning. the wind forecast right near that center is where we could get some of those stronger gusts, of course with a system like this it's been so wet in louisiana lately, additional 3 to 6 inches to rain will cause significant problem with freshwater flooding, rivers, streams, things like that. >> thank you both. it's time now for today's money minute. new reports that small businesses in the u.s. are losing confidence and amazon launches a new lineup of groceries. bertha coombs joins me now. small businesses are feeling less confident, the national federation of independent businesses said its optimism slid a little bit in july. business owners are feeling a little bit uncertain ahead of

we're following breaking news this hour, at america's busiest airport, two planes collided while taxiing at the hartsfield-jackson airport in atlanta. a delta airlines flight was taxiing for takeoff when its wing tip struck the tail of another plane on the tarmac. department ya airlines said no injuries were reported. nbc news correspondent priya

sridhar joins me. let's talk about what happened. >> reporter: this happened shortly after 10:00 a.m., this is the world's busiest airports, always planes landing, taking off, thousandsover people passing through here, what happened was a larger delta airbus heading to tokyo, its wing actually clipped a regional jet that was heading towards louisiana and it basically snapped that tail in half, you can see the video right there the vertical stabilizer completely fell off, now one of the fascinating things that i discovered because i did an interview with someone who was on that plane heading towards louisiana, it was actually full of journalists who were going to cover the hurricane that you were just talking to kathy park about. the man told me it felt like he was going over a rumble strip on

a highway. nobody had any idea of what was going on. they weren't scared because they weren't in the air, he first saw what his plane looked on twitter, the plane headed toward japan were taking pictures of it and posting it on social media. nobody was seriously injured. they evacuated the airplane, they did so on the taxiway, the faa will be investigating and we're waiting to hear back from the ntsb. >> social media makes the world kind of small. priya, thank you. in georgia the jackson county sheriff's released the 2023 body cam video from its interview with the alleged apalachee high school shooter, officers visited the home of colt gray and his father in may of last year after they were

warned by the fbi that colt had threatened a school shooting on a gaming platform. >> i don't know -- i don't know anything about anything [ bleep ]. i'll be as mad as hell if he did. the guns will go away. >> both colt and his father have been charged in last week's shooting that killed four people. nbc news correspondent marissa parra joins me now from winder, georgia, talk about the other elements in this body camera video the body language and what we're hearing and seeing from both the officers and the two grays, the father and son. >> reporter: vick y as you mentioned this is interesting and notable for several reasons, you're right, we had the audio of this, we kind of knew the information, the first time we're seeing both the accused shooter and his father standing outside his home by the way the officers didn't go inside at any

(♪♪) live claritin clear. san francisco supervisor aaron peskin announced a plan this morning to expand rent control for all apartments in san francisco. it would go into effect immediately if voters approve prop 33 in november. it's a repeal of the costa-hawkins act of 1995. if passed, cities and counties will be able to limit rent on any housing, even for first time renters and single family homes built between. when the act passed in 1995 and the november election. peskin says the ordinance would protect tenants even farther than costa-hawkins.

many people do not know that over 100,000 tenants are subject to arbitrary landlord price gouging and do not have the benefits that 19 pre 1979 tenants have. developers and landlords oppose this measure. they say it would discourage future developments in the city. we should mention supervisor peskin is among the candidates running for san francisco mayor. the 49ers kicked off their season last night and their number one draft pick. amazingly was standing on the sidelines after being shot just ten days ago in san francisco, and the team paid tribute to the first responders who saved his life. here's nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab with the details. during the first quarter of last night's game, all eyes were on touching moments between san francisco rookie rookie pearsall and two women who helped save his life after a shooting during an attempted robbery in san francisco's union square area. now, these hugs say it all. here

is rookie pearsall showing his gratitude to sergeant joelle harrell, one of the first people to respond to the shooting, and doctor lucy kornblith, a surgeon at zuckerberg san francisco general who helped pearsall recover from his gunshot wound to the chest. pearsall gave both women jerseys with his name and number on it as pearsall, and the crowd honored their heroic efforts. after the attempted robbery and shooting, pearsall was put on the football non injury list, but last night he was out on the field giving his team support, showing fans some love and the fans gave it right back. it's a blessing and it's really good to see him. it's good to see them and know that he's in a good spirits and he really wants to get out there, and i'm glad that the coaches are taking, you know, precautions. and just to make sure that he's mentally and physically healed. the niners went on to beat aaron rodgers and the jets 32 to 19 with big plays from former undrafted free agent jordan mason, who ran for 147 yards and a touchdown in

bay we're seeing a few low 80s from walnut creek to danville, 77 will be the high in livermore and 69 degrees in oakland. and mostly 60s for the peninsula from daly city to san mateo, 68 degrees there with upper 70s expected today in palo alto in san francisco. a lot of clouds eventually clearing with upper 60s there, and for the north bay. expect a high of 79. in sonoma, we'll get a look ahead to slightly warmer temperatures in our 7-day forecast coming up. see you soon. thank you kerry. the san jose sharks giving back to a gilroy woman this morning. they are fixing up her home with a hefty donation. the sharks foundation is a nonprofit with the san jose sharks, and this season, it's celebrating 30 years of impact. during that time, it's given more than $20 million to the community. today, they're contributing $30,000 to renovate the home of a retired health care worker from gilroy. you know, it's all about, like i said, giving back to our community, making sure that we're being great neighbors and taking care of those who take

daily." the israeli military says it likely killed an american in the occupied west bank the international solidarity movement said an american protester was shot and killed friday during a demonstration against the expansion of the settlements there, the idf says she may have been hit indirectly and unintentionally by fire while they were aiming at the instigator of that protest. secretary of state blinken said the attack was unjustified. take a look at this, this is new hampshire governor chris sununu, he's stepping in to save a man who's choking during a seafood eating contest. he jumped into action when he noticed the contestant was choking on a lobster roll. the governor performed the heimlich maneuver, according to sununu the contestant got back into the contest as soon as that lobster roll was dislodged.

that's a true competitor. and nearly half of the population of east timor attended an open air mass presided over by pope francis today, take a look at that picture. local authorities estimate around 600,000 people gathered for this event. east timor is known as one of the world's most catholic countries, first time the pope has visited the country since it gained independence from indonesia back in 2002. back to the presidential debate, several recent polls show the race is a dead-heat with 56 days to go until the election, so there's a lot at stake for both candidates tonight in philadelphia. joining me is hallie jackson, senior washington correspondent. hallie, always great to be with you. >> thanks for having me. >> let's start with vice president harris. big moment for her, what does

she need to accomplish tonight and how into policy and specifics does she need to get. >> she'll have to get into some of it. you look at debate, any debate, it's about a substance and style. on substance, she'll be pressed not just from the moderators but former president trump as well, as her extension of the biden agenda, what's her vision of governing over the next four years, what's the distance she'll look to put between her and president biden. her policy on the capital gains for example, that's an area of daylight between her and the president. she's been preparing for this, she's been ready, she's been doing full mock sessions, spending hours preparing as is the former president, not to be too overprepped. i talked to one strategist, he's not worried about that, she's a former prosecutor, they're not worried about her being able to

make a sharp argument on stage, but there's a lot riding on this, some 30% of people say this debate will matter to how they end up deciding in the election, for most people say it won't, 0% say no. 30% can make a difference. >> no notes, too. >> they can have pen and paper you can take notes during the debate. >> let's talk about former president trump, this is his seventh debate in a general election, her clearly has the experience, what does a win look like for him. >> two things can be true, donald trump in previous debates, this is his seventh general election debate, he's done 12 primary debates to kamala harris' four, two things are true, he can sometimes be a meandering, erratic personally attacking debater. or a debater who stays quiet and let the other candidate write

their own obituary and president biden spiralled into the end of his presidential ambitions back in june. so the question is going to be, allies, aides, people close to him say, stick to policy, publicly urged him don't go into these personal attacks. don't go there. don't do that. the question is, is donald trump going to listen to that advice. the question is, sort of which donald trump is going to end up showing up on stage. >> maybe that changes, he can be pretty her cucural. >> quickly before you go, we have obviously seen him make those personal attacks against hillary clinton, he has a

different attitude toward kamala harris, what if it does get vicious. >> he's questioned her intelligence, racial background, he's gotten personal with her in rallies, in public interviews in the past. she's ready for that. sources close to her campaign say she's preparing for the former president to lash out at her. preparing for that moment might be like. why they're concerned about the muted microphone. if the president says something derogatory he'll have to respond but the audience won't hear it because it's the muted. >> okay, it's not going to be a thing that happens a lot. it happened at points in june. maybe that will happen again depending on the moment. >> hallie jackson, thank you so much. don't miss hallie coming up on hallie jackson now, streaming

live tonight starting at 50:00 p.m. eastern on nbc news now. classes are cancelled for a second day in kentucky as the search intensifies for 32-year-old joseph couch accused of shooting into oncoming traffic. leaving five people wounded. kentucky state police are scouring this vast densely wooded area for couch, a $35,000 award is being offered. nbc news correspondent adrienne broaddus is tracking the search. do they think couch is still alive? >> reporter: vicky, kentucky state police say right now they still consider couch armed and dangerous and they'll exhaust every resource to find him, that's dead or alive, that's what we heard just moments ago from investigators, what we know at this hour according to investigators is that there's no

everyday suggesting that this man on your screen, joseph couch left the area, he's a 32-year-old white male, described as 154 pounds, 30 minutes before that shooting on saturday, a woman called 911 trying to warn them about couch, she received a text message, at least she told investigators she did, received a text message from him saying in part, i'm going to kill a lot of people. well, at least try. vicky. >> adrienne, i understand you spoke with the manager at the gun shop where couch allegedly purchased his firearm, what did that manager tell you? >> reporter: yeah, that manager is here in london, kentucky, and like so many folks in the community he too is a bit on edge, but i asked him if it's normal for someone to purchase a thousand rounds of ammo. here's what he said. is it normal for someone to buy

obesity. ovarian is the most deadly, it tends to be diagnosed in later stages. you have cervical cancer, one of the most preventable forms of cancers thanks to pap smears. >> these are different cancers that are distinctive. early detection is so important. what are some habits you want women to know about they should be incorporating in their 30s, 40s and 50s. >> if you feel or see something say something. talk to your doctor. if you're feeling bloated or you have a decrease in appetite, those are some telltale signs of ovarian cancer. if you're having any sort of skin changes, rashes or burning or just discoloration or lumps
