what may be the only debate between donald trump and kamala harris? the candidates clash over everything from the economy to reproductive rights. we're live in washington with that full breakdown. remembering the victims of nine over 11, 23 years later. the somber events taking place today and the work being done to educate those too young to remember its lasting impact on america and the world. plus, we're tracking breaking news. a big rig crashes on fire, catches fire on interstate 280 in the east bay. we are tracking that impact this morning on your morning commute. this is today in the bay. good wednesday morning. thanks for starting your morning with us. i'm marcus washington. and i'm laura garcia. we'll get to the forecast in just a moment. but we are tracking that big alert in the east bay. this a rig fire we're talking about? 238 is closed right now. if you're heading north toward 880, this rig fire happened just about 220 this morning. it had lanes
6:02 am
closed, and now the connector is all traffic of northbound 230 is diverted onto southbound 880. because they still haven't cleared this up. there's a closure in place there. let's look at the map. you're jammed up out of castro valley off the dublin grade. you're fine. and see a jam up approaching 580 passenger vehicles. need to take that area. or bart is one key factor through this area. you're forced off your traffic flow. forced off onto southbound 880 from northbound 238. keep that in mind. getting onto the northbound nimitz will take surface streets over here. highway 24 also closed because of an overturned tractor trailer. a tow truck has arrived, but we still have no word on when this will reopen. it's not at the caldecott. it's past the caldecott where both boards come together again. so traffic is jammed up there once again. highway 24 alternate would be either bart or highway four, just a bit to the north korea roadways. over aside from that, are pretty calm. all right. we're starting out. cool. this morning across the bay area. it's going to be windy today. and some of those gusts may pick up to 2530 five miles
6:03 am
per hour in some spots. and then the weekend looking forward to some comfortable temperatures and maybe even a chance of rain early next week as temperatures take a dip. now we're looking at in palo alto upper 50s to start, and it's going to be in the mid 60s at 10:00. lots of sunshine today. it's going to be a nice one as our highs here head for the upper seconds. we'll be back to what we saw yesterday, but maybe a touch warmer in a few spots. and we'll track that warm up and the impact of the wind coming up in the full microclimate forecast. sounds good. we'll check back with you. kari. now to decision 2024. and a historic and contentious presidential debate this morning. vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump each claiming victory. we know the candidates sparred over the economy, immigration and reproductive rights during the 90 minute debate, but it was also filled with personal attacks on both sides. today, in the bay's brie jackson joins us live in washington this morning. and bree, the night filled with a lot of tension. that's right. good morning laura. mark it was a fierce fight. fight on the
6:04 am
debate stage last night, and we saw a clear contrast between the two candidates on many issues as they tried to convince voters that they have a better plan for the country's future. vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump shaking hands before facing off on the debate stage, sparring over a top issue for many voters, the economy. this has been a disaster for people for the middle class. but for every class, donald trump actually has no plan for you because he is more interested in defending himself than he is in looking out for you. on abortion for 52 years, this issue has torn our country apart and they've wanted it back in the states. and i did something that nobody thought was possible. the government and donald trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body. throughout the debate, trump pivoted to the topic of immigration, blasting
6:05 am
harris for challenges at the southern border. they've destroyed the fabric of our country. millions of people let in. after hearing trump defend the insurrectionists who stormed the u.s. capitol on january 6th, the former prosecutor painted the former president as a threat while urging americans to reject his presidential bid and the chaos, and to end the approach that is about attacking the foundations of our democracy, because you don't like the outcome. trump repeating false claims about election fraud as both candidates make their case to voters on the debate stage afterwards, trump making a rare spin room appearance to tout his performance while vice president harris picked up an endorsement and praise from megastar taylor swift. and the battle now heads from the debate stage back to the campaign trail, where the two have less than two months
6:06 am
until election day. marcus. laura. and here we go. thank you very much, brie. of course, the ultimate goal for each candidate in last night's debate to persuade undecided voters, we checked in with some of those voters that were watching right here in the bay area today in the bay's kris sanchez in our newsroom this morning. and, kris, what are those people saying? well, as you might expect, there were more people at the watch party hosted by the democratic party in san francisco as california is largely a blue state. but at the san francisco gop watch party, the chair there said that the registration numbers are going up. democratic voters told us they liked the vice president's message and how she handled the former president, while republican voters didn't seem persuaded. i really think that kamala harris did a really good job laying out what it is that she sees. her vision is for this country. she offered hope, and that's what we need. i think we've seen the policies of the prior administration, and it hasn't exactly been the best. we
6:07 am
had a decline in registration for decades. many decades, six decades. but about five years ago, we stopped that. and we've actually grown 20% turning from voters to insiders, california governor gavin newsom showed up in the post-debate spin room where he said harris not only held her own, she showed voters the kind of fight she has in he. she commanded the room from the second she came out. she was a commander in chief and she had him on the defense. the entire night. if this was a prize fight, it would have been tko in the second round. now this was the first time kamala harris and donald trump have ever met have ever shaken hands. it could be the last time, as there is no other debate scheduled at this point. marcus. all right. chris thank you. well, today, marking 23 years since the september 11th terror attacks, forever changing the world. i want to give you a live look this morning. as people are reading
6:08 am
the names there of those who died that day. this is from the world trade center plaza and always people will read those names each year. we're talking about 3000 victims who lost their lives. but as more time passes, nine over 11 memorial and the museum is really doing more to reach a growing number of americans just too young to remember those attacks, that now amounts to more than 100 million americans, or roughly one third of the u.s. population. museum leaders are now expanding those efforts to reach america's young people through digital assets, tours and museum exhibitions to educate students. we have a digital learning experience that can be downloaded free on nine over 11. it runs every year. students around the world, already 4 million students and educators, have accessed those annual lessons that we put out there. a remembrance ceremony from san francisco fire department set to start in just over an hour and a half. we will have a live look a little bit later for you in our newscast. well happening now. growing wildfire threatening homes in
6:09 am
the cierra, the davis fire started saturday south of reno in containment at times has grown to 30%, but it is being fueled by red flag conditions. and by last night it grew to 5500 acres. conditions there are expected to worsen immensely today, and there are concerns hundreds of homes may be in the fire's path. in the meantime, in southern california, firefighters battling an out-of-control wildfire that exploded in size yesterday, destroying an undetermined number of homes. the bridge fire began sunday in big bear near wrightwood in the angeles national forest. yesterday it took a bad turn and grew last night to about 34,000 acres. it is now threatening the mountain high ski resort, and firefighters are up against hot, windy and dry conditions. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking it all. hopefully this situation improves today. kari. yeah, that's what we're hoping for. more containment here as the red flag warning continues in those areas. but three major fires burning around the la

area. and we're also seeing this putting up some very unhealthy air quality as we go throughout today. the winds are expected to increase up to about 15 to 20mph. and so that's going to be the concern today as the winds are very variable. and that may shift the direction of some of those fires. we are once again monitoring the air quality. most of the smoke moving away from us and across parts of southern california. but you can see all of the smoke there as it continues to drift off towards the east. and that's also going to be of high concern for the bay area. we're going to have a windy day. we'll have to watch out for our fire. weather conditions as well as our humidity is a little bit higher. and that's the reason why we don't have a red flag warning. but we know the vegetation is extremely dry, so we do have to be very careful today. i'll continue to monitor this. we'll talk about slightly warmer temperatures coming up. and mike, you've been watching gas prices going down a bit. well i've been hoping they'd be going
6:11 am
down. they were going up a bit in the spots that i passed in the morning. and perhaps for you as well. our best of the day in the south in contra costa county is 3.89. that's reported at quick serve on carlson boulevard in richmond and then we have nothing under four bucks in san jose. that's the best with 403 at arco on north capitol avenue. in fact, that's it for the south bay itself. and on the peninsula, san mateo county's best is 4.39 ana gas on holly street in san carlos. you can get or give those reports there over there at gasbuddy.com. on the roadways, two major issues continue for the morning. just learned it may be another two hours until they can reopen this portion of north. 238 connecting on to north 880. you're forced onto southbound. 238 from the castro valley. y the jam up out of castro valley, westbound 580 for passenger vehicles into oakland and into oakland. from highway 24. no access there. you're diverted onto highway 13, an overturned tractor trailer. there they have a hard closure in place. back to you. all right, mike, thank you. pretty busy out there. well, there's some new relief on the way for
6:12 am
those trying to make it in the bay. coming up at 625. a look at the first affordable housing project of its kind in nearly 50 years. for one north bay county in business news, we have news about soup and coffee. elon musk talking cats. and we just got good news about inflation out to the futures this morning. i would expect wall street to be happier, but i guarantee it's good news. plus teetee audio you can take me high to go to a big night in music tonight. from chapel road to sabrina carpenter, we are looking ahead to the all big performances that you will see tonight during the vmas, including a huge award for one iconic pop star who is it? we'll tell you when we return. you're watching today in the bay

i came to bayview hunter's point, where there was only one pediatrician to serve more than 10,000 children. daniel lurie said, i'm going to help. we opened a clinic for our most vulnerable children. i have worked shoulder to shoulder with him as we have brought solutions where people thought the problem was unsolvable. daniel doesn't take excuses. he holds himself accountable. and i know that he can do it for the city of san francisco.

caldecott tunnel, as well as northbound 238. both involve big rig trailers that are in the roadway. we'll talk about details on both coming up. well good morning. very happy wednesday to you. good news about the economy. latest read on the inflation numbers. the consumer price index shows an annual inflation rate of 2.5%. the lowest it's been since february of 2021. the fed wants some inflation. 2% is the target. so we're just a half percent above where we want to be. campbell soup is changing its name to just campbell's because it makes more than soup until 2007. apple was known as apple computer. they make more than computers. the ceo of starbucks, meantime, says he's worried getting a cup of coffee has gotten too transactional. that the stores are not welcoming anymore. add to that, he says, the baristas are so worried about getting pickup orders ready. the ones that

people order on the app, they're not paying enough attention to the walk in customers that starbucks has become a fast food counter and not a place to hang out with friends to enjoy a latte. so expect some changes at starbucks ahead. well, this looks like a picture. it's actually video of the polaris dawn floating above the earth. the spacex powered mission has reached apogee. that is the most distant, highest point in its orbit, farther away than any spaceship has been since the apollo program. and the trips from the earth to the moon. the ceo of tesla has repeatedly tweeted about haitian immigrants snatching and eating people's cats in ohio. this is a totally made up story. the mayor and city manager in springfield, ohio say this talk of people eating pets is not true. the police department says it's not true, but musk insists that it is. here's the local mayor. we have not been able to verify any
6:18 am
credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community. now, in the debate last night, former president trump insisted people were eating cats as well. we'll talk more about that as we talk politics. speaking of cats, and this may be the most i've ever spoken about cats. taylor swift last night endorsed kamala harris and called herself a childless cat lady. on instagram, she's referring to a claim by jd vance, seen here arguing. last night i kid you not about cats that america is run by childless cat ladies. the tesla and ceo and father of 12 responded to swift's sign off as a childless cat lady, offering to give her a child. and we've agreed not to speculate what he means by that. but we know he has like 12 kids. he's got 12. there are times i thought i had one i could probably give away.
6:19 am
you have two, though. all right. you bet. thanks, scott. 618 for you right now. and happening tonight, the mtv video music awards are happening. a california girl will be celebrating for her success in the pop music industry. you make me feel like i'm livin a teenage dream. the way you talk about a dream. they're so katy perry receiving this year's lifetime achievement award. it's called the video vanguard award. she'll also perform some of her biggest hits. megan thee stallion is hosting, and the show kicks off with performances from retiring rap star eminem. other performances will include rising megastar chappell roan as well as sabrina carpenter. as for those nominations and the count, well, taylor swift has the most this year. no surprise there with 12. that's followed by post malone with 11. then eminem with eight. ariana grande, megan thee stallion and sabrina carpenter, as well as sza, tied with seven.

so far, i can play hot to go over and over and not get tired. really? yeah all the time. the arm movements too. that's a good word in our car. yeah, but when i'm driving, i got it. yeah. maybe just one. yeah, i like sabrina carpenter's, espresso. espresso? yeah. she's got to get some. i like that one. all right, all right, all right. i like, you know what that song would be perfect today. rolling down the windows, driving along the interstate. yeah. windows down. yeah. nice. nice. yeah. really comfortable today. we'll work on that after the show. all right. it's nice to have the cooler weather settling into the bay area, but it will be just a touch warmer for some spots. and we're already seeing the clearing sky in san francisco as well as much of the rest of the bay area waking up to sunshine. well, we're also walking out the door to cooler temperatures in parts of the north bay. it's 49 in sonoma, 50 in napa, and we're at 58 in danville, as well as 58 in san jose, 54 in san mateo. and then as we take a look at
6:21 am
our highs for today, and you're checking out that forecast at the bottom of the screen, it's going to be 77 downtown and 80 in morgan hill. remember just a couple of days ago we were talking 90s no more of that. but we will be in the mid 80s for concord and antioch and danville today, 80 degrees and 75, in hayward and near the coast. it's in the upper 60s. you'll notice that it's going to be gusty today, and san mateo will see a high of 71. so still really comfortable with some low 70s in san francisco in the mission district. and 65 for the outer sunset for the north bay 73 in mill valley and 82 in sonoma and clear lake and ukiah. we're in the upper 70s today, so this low is dipping in, bringing some rain very close to northern california, but then moving off towards the east. the next one coming in will dip a little bit farther south, and there could be some more rain in the sierra and areas to the north as well. but we're all going to get a significant cooldown that at least lasts for a couple of days. but today we're seeing the
6:22 am
gusty winds picking up and this may increase our fire danger. looking at winds near the coast at 1:00 today at 30 to 40mph. so it's going to be windy and that starts to work its way inland. as we go into this evening, some of our hills may have gusts at 40 to 50mph. so we do have to be very careful today with any fire conditions. looking at our highs headed for the upper seconds through friday and then a little bit cooler monday. is that day where it will be much cooler and we'll be watching out for rain across the region and mike, you continue with the freeway closure. yeah. first of all, this one. highway 24. look at this folks. their tractor trailer on its side. there a tow truck has arrived, but they may need more than one to right this rig. highway 24 westbound is blocked at highway 13. let's show you the map. you see the traffic on that camera shot there? it's backed up coming out of orinda through the caldecott tunnel. this is west of the caldecott, and chp says they're forcing traffic over to highway
6:23 am
13 or tunnel road to the north of the freeway. some folks may be continuing there over toward the east shore freeway. the bay bridge backup is light right now. the east shore freeway also being fed by highway four, which might be an alternate for some folks out of walnut creek and north of the walnut creek interchange over through the area. the second closure continues as crews arrived. there's a loader there to try and clear out this burnt out rig trailer north. 238 right now, only accessible to southbound 880 north to oakland, you'll have to use passenger vehicles on 580. back to you. thanks mike. still ahead on today in the bay. stopping teenage tobacco use. we don't want to play a game of public health. whack a mole. e-cigarettes may be on the decline, but not so much for other products. we break down the latest data and the resources available for concerned parents

and to make it in the bay. the county just announced plans to build the largest affordable housing development in unincorporated marin in nearly 50 years. the oak hill apartments will be located on sir francis drake boulevard between san quinton rehabilitation center and drakes cove road. it is a two part building project and will house working families and educators. supervisors have approved nearly $5 million to help build it. well, new this morning a big
6:27 am
public health win. the number of teenagers using e-cigarettes is actually dropping. the latest fda and cdc survey finds just under 6% of middle and high schoolers say they've used e-cigarettes. that's nearly two percentage point decline from the year before. but one expert points out that also means more are still. there are more than 1.5 million teenagers using vaping products, and nearly half a million teens use nicotine patches. we know there's no risk free tobacco products, and that's particularly true for kids. and so it's important that we're mindful of that and address the full diversity of products out on the marketplace to keep them out of the hands of our nation's kids. research shows nicotine is particularly harmful to teenagers whose brains are still developing. nicotine can impact attention, learning, mood and impulse control, and it can put teens at increased risk for future addiction. if you have a teen who wants to stop, reach out to your pediatrician, or you can find more resources at 800. quit

they also said you couldn't escape from alcatraz. but watch me do both. other candidates want to tear down san francisco, but i'll build on what's already great to make it even better. with expanded rent control, new homes for the middle class community policing to reduce crime, and an inspector general to root out corruption. let's get to work. paid for by aaron peskin for mayor 2024. financial disclosures are available at sfethics.org it takes a rebel to make something beautiful.

which is to provide a tax cut for billionaires and big corporations. right now it's 630. did you see it? the debate. we will have highlights for you and bracing for impact. hurricane francine bearing down on the gulf coast. we're tracking the path of this powerful storm and the bay area teams now headed there to help. this is today in the bay welcome to wednesday morning, 630 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. want to get over to mike inouye right now because, mike, you're tracking an alert there on the east bay. what's happening with closures right now? the first one i'm talking about is here. caused by this overturned tractor trailer fire. northbound 238 is blocked right now. this happened just about 220 in the
6:32 am
morning. it came to chp. and as we look at the map now, you see the jam up. it continues. we just got word that maybe 90 minutes, perhaps two hours until they can clear this. they need a loader or a bulldozer, as many folks will call it, to clear some of the debris. chp just let us know. 40,000 pounds of produce was on that burning trailer. so there's a lot to clean up. this big backup coming out of castro valley northbound at 580 will be better route for cars through oakland, and then westbound 24 as the second closure at highway 13, an overturned tractor trailer there as well. there is a tow truck on scene. i don't know if that's enough. kari. that's the two worst issues for the morning. all right? and this morning we are starting out with some calm weather conditions, slightly cooler temperatures. but it will become windy today as we take a live look outside in walnut creek. and we're starting out this morning with temperatures in the low 60s headed for the low 80s for today. but some of those gusts may reach 20 to 30mph. and then we're also going to see temperatures across the bay area just a touch warmer
6:33 am
than it was yesterday. up to 85 in concord, 87 in fairfield and vacaville and some mid 70s for san francisco. i'll have more on what to expect coming up in a few minutes. marcus and laura. all right. thank you. kari. with breaking news this morning, legendary soul singer frankie beverly has died. his family posting the news on social media saying that they are grieving his loss, which was yesterday. i want to make sure i'm right, girl, before i let go. beverly was the founder of the funk band maze. this was one of the group's best known songs, called before i let go, which came out in 1981. most recently, beyonce covered that song in her homecoming live album back in 2019. frankie beverly was 77 years old. well, first at 632 decision 2024. and did you see it? the first debate between former president donald trump and current vice president kamala harris last night. scott
6:34 am
mcgrew joins us now. you were saying earlier you don't like the idea of someone winning or losing a debate. i think we learn from these debates. you don't win them or lose them. it's not a basketball game. there's no score. i suppose if you insisted on figuring out who lost the debate or a basketball game, it's probably the side complaining the most about the referees. here's some video from last night just to show you what it looked like. we'll talk more about what happened, but i was immediately struck by the facial expressions in this debate compared to the last one. here's a comparison for you. and yeah, it's one moment in time, but harris, in her debate against trump looking confident biden, as all democrats remember, looking bewildered. that hand on the chin is already a subject of a hundred online memes. if you were trying to summarize the debate, two points stick out. harris managed to avoid specifics on most of the questions asked of her. the first question went to her, and she came nowhere near answering
6:35 am
it. the second takeaway trump leapt at every bit of obvious bait harris dangled his way. the trump camp must have known she was going to do it. here's harris baiting trump with something dear to his heart. crowd sizes. you will see during the course of his rallies, he talks about fictional characters like hannibal lecter. he will talk about windmills cause cancer. and what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom. people don't leave my rallies. we have the biggest rallies, the most incredible rallies in the history of politics. that's because people want to take their country back. the abc moderators jumped in from time to time with fact checks and clarifications. that doesn't happen in every debate. some critics say the moderators allowed some of harris's false claims to slide while jumping on trump's for instance, trump blamed the war in ukraine on harris's poor negotiations with russian president putin. but
6:36 am
harris has never met with putin. she was the emissary they sent her in to negotiate with zelensky and putin, and she did. and the war started three days later. and that's the kind of talent we have with her. she's worse than biden, in my opinion. i think he's the worst president in the history of our country. she goes down as the worst vice president in the history of our country. but let me tell you something. she is a horrible negotiator. they sent her in to negotiate. as soon as they left. putin did the invasion. president trump, thank you. you did bring up something you said she went to negotiate with vladimir putin. vice president harris, have you ever met vladimir putin? can you clarify tonight, yet again, i said it at the beginning of this debate. you're going to hear a bunch of lies coming from this fellow. and that is another one. one of the strangest moments of the night. trump repeating the false claim that immigrants are eating people's pets. that rumor got started in springfield, ohio. the mayor, city manager and police chief all say it's just not true. in springfield,
6:37 am
they're eating the dogs. the people that came in, they're eating the cats. they're eating. they're eating the pets of the people that live there. abc news did reach out to the city manager there. he told us there have been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community. i've seen people on television, let me just say here, this is the people on television say my dog was taken and used for food. those haitian immigrants, by the way, are living and working in ohio legally. their return to haiti was delayed by washington through america's humanitarian program. video just into our newsroom, trump and harris had never met before. last night. this morning, they find themselves together again at the september 11th memorial in new york that schumer, harris, bide, bloomberg, trump and vance. laura all right. thank you very much. last night's debate really may be a huge decision maker for many voters. as election day inches closer. to give us a little insight and tell us about her new position with the harris
6:38 am
campaign is east bay congresswoman barbara lee. thanks so much for joining us early this morning. let's jump right in. i would imagine with your new position with the harris campaign, you thought she did well last night. most people thought she did very well last night. and i tell you, she was very presidential. she showed our country and the rest of the world that she's prepared. she's ready. she's experienced, but she's also a fighter. i've known her over three decades, and she fights for people. and i think what we saw last night is that fighting spirit. but yet she's very presidential and knows how to get the job done to make life better for everyone. you were just appointed to the official advisory board for the vice president's campaign. what does that entail? and tell us, will it impact bay area residents? sure. it's an honor to be part of the national advisory board of the messaging and her experience and her agenda is put forth all
6:39 am
around the country, especially in battleground states. we need to make sure that everyone connects with her and serve as surrogates. i've been to many states already, or several states, including the nevada and arizona. a couple of times, and it just means that we are very close to the campaign and will ensure that every voter understands who she is, what her agenda is, and the real threats to our freedoms. in fact, i think most people saw last night that there's no option but to elect kamala harris as our next president because donald trump displayed who he was last night. and it's up to us as members of the national advisory board, as well as everyone in our country, to communicate the not only the dangers of a second trump
6:40 am
presidency, but to communicate the economic agenda, the opportunity agenda, the housing agenda, her her background and experience on the world stage. you know, i was with her in munich, a couple of years ago at the munich security summit, and i witnessed how the how world leaders listened to her, how she listens, how she's able to represent the united states on the world stage. and people saw how donald trump last night once again told lies she did not meet with putin three days before the war began, and so i think part of what my job is, is to make sure we answer questions, make sure we communicate to voters and make sure that we represent the campaign throughout the country and in a way that people know that she's going to continue to fight for them and will be their president and on their side. right. because obviously here in the bay area, we know her well for all of her

work that she's done in san francisco and being from oakland and whatnot. but do you think that will be the biggest challenge is getting america ready or to know her more? last night she was very authentic. she showed the country how much integrity, integrity that she has. and of course, those that don't know her well are beginning to know her well. and it's up to us to make sure that everyone knows who she is and that we in the bay area of course, we've known her for many years, and we've seen her and how she fights and how she's a unifier. and i think another part of what we saw last night was the pessimism and the dark side of, of donald trump that shows that the world is the glass half full. she showed, which is what we know in the bay area. the glass half full and looking at to how unify people and how not to be divisive.
6:42 am
donald trump continues to promote hate and division. she talks about unity and moving forward, not backwards. and that's going to be what the public needs to understand and needs to know about her. and i think last night, people who didn't know got to see a glimpse of obviously, you being on her advisory board, you'd have those views as well. we thank you very much, representative barbara lee, for joining us this mornin. my pleasure. nice being with you. 641 right now and developing for you new orleans opening its storm shelters this morning. this is after hurricane francine barreling towards the gulf coast. now that storm should make landfall early evening hours today in the bay's. bob redell, of course, is here this morning. following that, now, the state of california already helping louisiana prepare for francine's arrival. they are correct. good morning to you, marcus. this is by sending people to assist the people who live on the gulf coast. cal oes tweeted out that the state is deploying five urban search and rescue specialists here in the bay

area. contra costa fire tweeted out they are sending an assistant chief of communications as part of fema's usar blue incident support team. hurricane francine is gaining strength, as you mentioned, as it churns through the gulf, may become a category two by the time it makes landfall. ahead of that coastal towns are already experiencing heavy rainfall, and people up and down the coast are stocking up on things like fuel and supplies. groceries, as you saw right there. landfall is expected in the early evening hours. it's not clear if new orleans will take a direct hit. a big question, of course. after hurricane katrina, a couple of decades ago. but the mayor there is bracing residents for a worst case scenario. now, again, is the time to finalize your storm plans and to prepare not only for your families. also, looking out for your neighbors. the governor of louisiana is declaring a state of emergency ahead of the storm. now let's turn to my friend, meteorologist
6:44 am
kari hall. kari, where and when are we expecting the storm? yeah, it's very close. you can see some of the outer rain bands already starting to make it into the coastal marshes there. and this is expected to continue on that northeasterly track as we go into the next few hours and continue to make landfall. as you mentioned, this is a category one hurricane and it is producing winds up to about 90mph and may strengthen a little bit more before it makes landfall. going into this afternoon. hurricane watch is up in effect for some of those areas across southern louisiana. and that is going to be moving in later today and then weaken to a tropical storm by tomorrow morning. at this time, with 60mph winds as it continues to move off to the north. so this is going to be a big impact storm, possibly up to a ten foot storm surge, which would cover most of the coastal areas. and then we're also looking at a lot of rain coming along with that. so we'll continue to monitor that throughout the day. mike, you're tracking two traffic
6:45 am
alerts. yeah. which keeps the bay bridge actually a lot clearer. we're just now seeing the backup form here. but the reason is because of the huge backup on highway 24 coming in toward the caldecott, just outside the caldecott at highway 13, traffic is diverted off of west 24 onto state route 13, or tunnel road, and to get out of the roadway because of an overturned tractor trailer. it could be a while till they'll clear that highway four saw some more traffic. you see the upper east shore freeway now just feeding down, causing some delays out of contra costa county toward the bay bridge. this also out of alameda county. we're looking at westbound two, northbound 238 off of westbound 580. that is also blocked heading off traffic to southbound 880. if you travel north on 880 off the castro valley y, you'll need to use an alternate, perhaps westbound 580. the backup over here. they need a loader to clear a burnt out tractor trailer and 40,000 pounds of burnt out produce. back to you. thanks, mike. marking 23 years since nine over 11 with a live look in new york

i came to bayview hunter's point, where there was only one pediatrician to serve more than 10,000 children. daniel lurie said, i'm going to help. we opened a clinic for our most vulnerable children. i have worked shoulder to shoulder with him as we have brought solutions where people thought the problem was unsolvable. daniel doesn't take excuses. he holds himself accountable. and i know that he can do it for the city of san francisco.

we have a live look in san francisco, where the fire department is honoring first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice. the names of 343 new york city firefighters and eight emergency medical technicians will be read aloud and recognized well. meanwhile, an unusual surprise for one san francisco family, which found a coyote pup hiding in their home. so this all started when anthony williams noticed damage in his backyard last monday. he suspected it was a raccoon, maybe even a skunk. but then he spotted that young coyote in on his front steps. take a look right here. later this week, he found the pup had actually dug a hole under the house and actually seem to be stuck there.
6:50 am
and that's when he actually called the wildlife animal control. they pulled a blanket over him and then make some, you know, little docile. and then he just picked him up and scooped him out. and then they, you know, returned him to golden gate parks. he also says that his daughter was inspired to see the work of those officers rescuing the young coyote, and they're not sure, but they're hoping it was reunited with its family. turning for you this morning at the end of the line for passengers on board an epic nine month world cruise. could you do that? nine months at sea. the royal caribbean cruise started last december. passengers visited 65 countries. they even saw the eight wonders of the world and celebrated 6000 birthdays. at one point, the ship had to change course because of the war in the middle east. many passengers went viral on social media as they monitored the voyage. what inspired you to do this? my husband had just retired and we are avid cruises. they told us the price and i looked at my

husband and he just said, you're going to book it anyways. and i could barely get my husband to do seven days. he was itching to get off. royal caribbean already saying it would hold a reunion cruise for those passengers. the dates are not yet available, but they probably need some time to let some things sink in. you can watch the full story coming up on the today show at 7 a.m, right after today in the bay. okay, that's kind of cool, though. i mean, if you're retired, you know, take some, you know, time and travel. so many countries get off. yeah. you're stuck in your room. so true. hopefully. hopefully not. yeah we've done other cruise stories, but we won't mention those here. well, look, don't get stuck anywhere today. just get outside and enjoy the weather. it's going to be nice. it's going to be nice, but a little windy. so don't even worry about styling your hair this morning. the wind will do it for you. take a look at our wind gusts forecast, where we are going to see things picking up as we go throughout today 30, possibly 35 40 mile per hour winds, especially near the coast as we go into this afternoon.
6:52 am
and we're going to see that spreading into the inland areas in the hills. we will also have some gusty winds, which would increase our fire danger. and so we do have to be very careful today as our temperatures head for the mid 80s in spots like concord, upper 80s for vacaville and fairfield, and in san jose, 77 degrees, palo alto about the same. and 77 in oakland. nice and mild and maybe just a touch warmer compared to yesterday. but once again, the wind is the main story today, as the wind calms down tomorrow, temperatures go up another couple of degrees with concord a high of 87 degrees in oakland. we're still in the mid 70s and mid 70s for san francisco in santa rosa. look for a high tomorrow of 87 degrees. and then on friday we're looking at slightly warmer temperatures where we start to see those 90s popping up on the map for the interior valleys as well as the delta into the north bay. so once again, it's going to be warmer today and a few spots,

but still pretty comfortable as this low moves across the pacific northwest. that's what's providing a bit of relief today, but also those high winds. the next one coming in between late sunday into monday, may bring in more clouds. and look at all the green here. that's rain, as well as some upper elevation snow for the sierra and for the bay area could bring in some spotty sprinkles, as well as much cooler temperatures. a look at our 7-day forecast shows that we will be warming up toward the end of the week, and then cooling down for the weekend. between friday and sunday, there's that 10 degrees drop in those high temperatures, and on monday it's going to be the coolest day in san francisco. just really windy today and highs in the low 70s. but as the wind calms down, those temperatures will come down as well for the weekend. mike, you still have those alerts happening. the two alerts in the east bay. i did want to show folks the south bay is got the commute going on here. north 87 101 typical patterns over here 85 extending up through los gatos in towards saratoga. the alerts that we're talking about

hours. francine is surely going to make some type of impact there. yeah, we're watching that as it begins to make its way closer to the louisiana coast. here at home, it's going to be windy, so we have to watch out for the fire weather conditions. and as we go toward the end of the week, just slightly warmer. but cooler days are ahead. and watch out east bay. we still have highway 24 highway. i'm sorry, highway 24 blocked there. highway. as you get over toward highway 13. so that will be a factor coming out of orinda and walnut creek interchange. highway four. at the top of the screen is an alternate. we see a lot more traffic on the upper east shore freeway and north two. 38 still blocked until they can clear that overturned and burned tractor trailer. all right. busy morning. that it is. all right, well, we'll see you back here when we come with our cut in in about 725. and that's what's happening here on today in the bay. have a great good wednesday morning. reacti
