from the front lines of the big boost delivered by bay area firefighters strike averted. details on the late night deal ending a labor battle in one peninsula school district, allowing classes to go on as planned today. also history happening right now in space. details behind the first of its kind spacewalk. this is today in the bay and good morning to you. thanks for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. and i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with kari for the forecast in just a moment. but mike, right now, very busy tracking an alert on northbound 101. yeah, we have all but one lane open. only one lane open in the commute direction. there's been a deadly crash in the south bay in the south bay in san jose's northbound direction for the bayshore freeway. just before you get to story road, you narrow down to just one lane. as folks are traveling up toward the 101. two 8680 interchange there. we just got word from chp that they've only got the fast lane open. your right lanes are blocked as you're traveling
5:02 am
north. again, this is the commute direction. as folks are coming in out of south county, we expect to see the first slowing just north of there in about 20 minutes. so this much slowing and restriction down to one lane will be a problem for folks. if you're starting from south county, you may already want to plan your alternate to 85 and 87. we'll get updates from chp as they can head toward the scene, but it sounds like the pedestrian was in the fast lane or was in the slow lane approaching the off ramp there, and the investigation will continue. there may be a semi truck in the area as well. i'm getting that details. meanwhile, the rest of the bay, we're showing a smooth flow of traffic into the east bay, getting toward the bay bridge, and there is one more issue, one on one just off of the bay bridge itself as you get in towards san francisco. so far, everything seems to be fine past that disabled vehicle. the big deal, kari, is in that south bay point as we're looking at san jose's northbound 101. all right. we're starting out this morning with a look across four of our microclimates, where we are seeing temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s. we're at 59 right now in walnut creek, and it is 52 in san francisco. we
5:03 am
are seeing some of those cooler temperatures to start. it's going to be another mild day. it was very windy yesterday afternoon. we're still going to have some of those breezes picking up today with napa's high up to 85 degrees. and we're seeing some upper 70s for san jose. mid 70s for fremont. and in concord today. look for a high of 87 degrees. so we'll talk about a slight warm up and then a weekend cooldown in our microclimate forecast coming up in a few minutes. thanks, kari. well new for you this morning. thanks to an 11th hour agreement. one peninsula school district will hold classes as planned this morning. teachers in half moon bay. cabrillo. cabrillo unified school district. they were actually set to launch a strike this morning. it would have impacted learning at all seven of the district's schools. but the union says just before midnight, a new tentative deal was reached addressing cost of living concerns. teachers will now have the vote to ratify that deal. developing now in southern california, an intense

battle to avert disaster. firefighters scrambling to protect thousands of homes threatened by raging wildfires. and now governor newsom has declared a state of emergency today in the bay's bob redell is here for us this morning. okay. so, bob. bay area firefighters, they are now answering that call, going out to help. they're on the front lines. you are correct. good morning to you, marcus and laura. a number of local fire agencies from the bay area, they are sending firefighters to southern california to the front lines of these wildfires. we were with alameda county fire crews, which was in the middle of wildland fire training yesterday afternoon when they got the call to pack up and head to southern california, contra costa and san jose fire departments also deploying crews down south. there are three major fires burning down there. the largest and most concerning is the bridge fire, which has already scorched 50,000 acres in san bernardino county near the border with l.a. county. we spoke with one family that learned through a video on

social media that sadly, the bridge fire destroyed their house. it's hard to put in words to say, just what it feels like, i know. yeah, we lost. we lost our sanctuary. it was, you know, our safe place. it was a home, not a house. the other two fires burning in southern california. the lion fire and the airport fire. the san francisco fire department has deployed engines and firefighters to orange county to help slow the spread for the fire. burning there. reporting live, bob redell today in the bay. so sad. all right, bob, thank you. well now to decision 2024 and it's back to the campaign trail for former president donald trump and vice president kamala harris. harris today kicks off a four day swing state tour. trump will deliver remarks in arizona. this all follows tuesday's night heated debate, with both candidates claiming victory today in the bay's brie jackson live in washington and brie tuesday's

questions without at least attempts at answers. i think there continues to be a lot of fear and concern, it's disappointing and concerning, and at this point is not something that i'm willing to support. people who live nearby say they only learned about the plan last month, but county leaders point out the new program would likely house many of the same people already there and not radically deviate from its current purposes. it would also include full time security. a live look now in louisiana. this is where the hurricane francine. well, the hurricane made landfall yesterday. hundreds of thousands of people walking in the dark. this waking up, i should say, in the dark this morning there and some of the dealings with far worse than that. so neighborhoods along louisiana's gulf coast, they were slammed with winds approaching 100mph in some cases, actually led to flash
5:10 am
flooding in new orleans. more than half a foot of rain fell as that storm passed through. i want to turn now to meteorologist kari hall and francine now. tropical storm francine is now a tropical depression, so it has continued to weaken. and that's going to be the trend as we go throughout the day. it is spreading rain all across the gulf coast states and is clearing most of louisiana. but we're still looking at about 3 to 6in of rainfall. and it has the potential to develop some tornadoes as we go across the south throughout the day, especially for the florida panhandle and parts of southern alabama. so we'll continue to watch that as we go throughout today. and then here at home, we have this system that is now moving across the some of the upper mountain states and moving over toward montana as it moves through. it's going to still give us some gusty winds here in the bay area, but we are looking at some calmer conditions, mild and breezy day and it will be a few degrees warmer for tomorrow.
5:11 am
but looking ahead to possible rain chances late sunday into early monday, i'll be tracking that with more on what you can expect going into the weekend. coming up. mike, you've been tracking a traffic alert. that's right. we're looking over here toward the south bay, where the northbound route of 101 slows quite a bit as you're approaching story road. we'll zoom in on that. that's because you're down to only the fast lane as you're traveling. the northbound commute direction. we expect the volume to build at about 535 540. so a half hour early for the slower drive. again, we're down to just the fast lane. we heard that chp has called for a hard closure. that means they're putting cones out. they expect things to continue this way for a while. the coroner won't get on scene for another hour, likely, and so that will be the problem until they can get there and at least perform that portion of the investigation. san jose's northbound 101 direction very slow. the altamont pass. pretty typical as you come on westbound 580. no surprises there. or for contra costa county, with an easy drive on highway four. back

our usual warmer spots, and we're headed for the mid to upper 80s for the afternoon. you'll notice that it's still going to be gusty today, with some of those winds up to about 30 to 40mph, but we are looking forward to a weekend cooldown. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. and we continue to talk about the big issue. the traffic alert for the south bay north 101 at story road. we have a deadly crash that happened early this morning. we have only the left lane, the only the fast lane open right now as you're traveling through the area, this is causing an early slowdown. i'll continue to follow the investigation. right now they look like they're putting cones out. well good morning. very happy thursday to you. we'll get more inflation data here in about 15 minutes with the producer price index. yesterday the consumer price index showed inflation continues to cool headline annualized inflation 2.5%. the fed is looking for 2% flat. so we are almost there. the head of 23andme. you can see

jose, 81 in east san jose and in gilroy will be in the low 80s for much of the east bay. in the mid to upper 80s. so you're going to notice it's a bit warmer today compared to yesterday. as we get into the middle of the afternoon in walnut creek, it will be 85 also 85, in martinez and in oakland, upper 70s, upper 60s for half moon bay. and those gusty winds continue in san francisco up to 68 in downtown san francisco, 78 in mill valley and napa. today, 85 for that high temperature. looking ahead, we are going to see a lot of changes going into the weekend. a nice little cool down, but this low will be dipping in going into late sunday into early next week. that may bring in a chance of rain. we'll really be watching this cierra for some rain and possibly some upper elevation snow. so as we take a look at our 7-day forecast, we are going from some very seasonable temperatures to a little bit of a cool down and a nice little

taste of fall for early next week. it does come with gusty winds and more clouds and some rain very close by in san francisco. will continue to see 60s all throughout the forecast. mike, do you still have that traffic alert on 101? we do carry and this may be around for a while. the first reported about 430, but the details came in there was a dead deadly crash over here. north 101 at story road involving a pedestrian that was confirmed just before 5:00, and the coroner was called. usually it takes about 90 minutes for the coroner to arrive on scene and do an investigation, so that may be 630 before we see lanes open. right now, only a fast lane of northbound 101 open as you approach 101 and 280 interchange. and this is about the time we should start to see more traffic coming through the area for that portion of 101, for folks who get the heads up, you may want to take 85 over to 87 to take you just north of that and join up with 101 by the airport. things are relatively calm right now through that stretch. we'll watch to see if that causes any shift for folks

outside of your weekend plans include time outdoors. temperatures should cooperate. meteorologist kari hall has a first look at what's on tap. this is today in the bay because it is friday eve. right. good morning, and thanks for joining us i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. want to get over to mike inouye because, mike, i know you're tracking this alert there on northbound 101 in san jose. that's right. this is the commute direction at about the time when we would typically see slowing right here north of the two 8680 interchange. the problem is that overnight, there was a deadly crash around story road. and it was reported into the system about an hour ago. they shut down lanes just before 5 a.m, and only your fast lane is open in this commute spot. and this is so in addition to being a tragedy for the life lost. we have a problem for the morning commute that continues to compound as we see the build coming in right about now from south county, up north 101, your alternate is 85 to 87. if you're thinking that far ahead, if you're starting that far south,
5:32 am
that is an option for you right now. i don't think that we'll get a crew on scene until about 6:00 for them to actually start the investigation there. we're looking at the start for the typical east bay commute, highway four up to the upper right, and then at the top of the screen, highway 37 carey. we know that's going to happen out of vallejo, heading over on highway 37. and we're starting out this morning with our weather. very nice, clear, cool across the bay area. we're going to see a few clouds over the next couple of hours, but it will still be a windy day. and looking at mild temperatures for this time of year now for tomorrow it will be a bit warmer, but looking ahead to a nice fall like pattern which may include a little bit of some wet weather. so we'll keep you up to date on that. looking at our temperatures today, we're back to what we saw yesterday. maybe a degree or two warmer in some spots, like concord, looking at a high today of 87 degrees, but we'll still be in the upper seconds for oakland in san francisco, low 70s and for santa rosa today. warmer there as well

with a high of 86. so we'll talk about a weekend cooldown and all of those changes ahead. and some weekend events coming up in a few minutes. thanks gary. 532 right now and happening today, a vote that may raise your pg&e rates yet again. this would be the third rate hike this year, and while it's not the largest hike, a lot of customers simply fed up. today in the bay's kris sanchez here this morning, chris, you have a look at why pg&e wants this latest hike and why is likely to happen to pg&e says that they need to bump our bills in order to make back what the utility lost during last winter's 15 major storms, the california public utilities commission will vote on that increase today. and if they allow it, your pg&e bill will go up about $6 a month. now, if you're thinking didn't raise, just go up. they sure did half percent in september. and that's just one. there were three other times this year as well. so in the last ten years. pg&e rates have increased 110%. customers

5:35 am
cut down costs so they can bring rates down at some point. but pg&e bills are averaging $281 a month. that's average. average. that means a lot of people are paying a lot more than that. i mean, i can't even look at the thermostat in my house, you know, without having a family meeting and what we have to talk about when that bill comes, it's tough to open. it's tough to open and it's tough to pay. there are a million pg&e customers who are behind and they owe pg&e money. you had a bill over 200. and i live by myself. yeah, just, you know, you scolding yourself when you look at it. i try not to blame myself. don't do it, mark. you don't have the teenagers to leave the lights on. exactly. i remember back in the day, arnold schwarzenegger would take the light bulbs out of out of his kids rooms if they left the lights on. oh, interesting. and so at one point, the kids were like, is the mayor going to take away our door? because i was like, close the door, turn off the lights. yeah, yeah, i mean, yeah, that's been going on a while. yeah, yeah. no doubt. thank you. all right. 535 for

5:38 am
may of this year. he said the transamerica building is like an exclamation mark on the financial district. and that is what you would imagine the owner and the team behind the building's modernization want to bring about, starting today. now, joe spoke to the architect, ben dobbin of foster and partners and he said that he would help reimagine this building's future. here he is several months back, speaking about its modernization. the first move was take as much as possible, which had already been incrementally put into place over time, and strip all of all of that away down to the bones. we spent months to match the same concrete look, feel and texture and materials as was used in the original facade. now, the reimagined building has transformed its top levels to become working spaces, a lounge and a fitness facility exclusively for its tenants. now that used to be a public
5:39 am
observation deck. before this, but what is still open to the public, the redwood park, which has been closed since the pandemic, that is also set to reopen the park when the park was unveiled in 1972, the trees were just about 16 to 18ft tall and nowadays about 150ft tall. so in addition to fixing up some of the old stuff, there are also some new additions that are set to come that will really reimagine and transform this whole block. now, the formal opening ceremony kicks off at nine until 11 this morning. there will also be a pyramid light show. it's called pyramid of light and sound and that kicks off at seven tonight. it will last until 11. that i imagine will be quite a spectacle to see and it's free. so if you do have the chance, come out and see it. but a big step moving forward for the city of san francisco. guys, back to you. the pyramid is such an iconic part of the skyline of san francisco. you said that magic word to free. absolutely

all right. if you haven't locked in those weekend plans just yet, here's an idea. the santa cruz county fair officially kicked off last night, celebrating with a dazzling drone show. it featured over 200 drones choreographed to music fair, and the drone show continued today through sunday. let's bring in meteorologist kari hall. we need to have clear skies to see those drones. yes and it looks great. i mean, we're going to have some really comfortable weather for this time of year. and today we're going to see highs up to about 72. it will of course get chilly for the late evening hours. so bring a jacket for the wind picking up and the temperatures dropping. we'll see. pretty much the same thing all throughout the weekend. tonight we also have the giants game and that kicks off with some nice cool weather, some gusty winds. you want to make sure you have the hoodie and the layers because it will be very chilly there at oracle park. and then for the weekend we have the san jose state game there. we're looking at some nice comfortable
5:41 am
weather. it's going to be breezy, but our temperatures will be in the low 70s. dropping back to the upper 60s by the end of the game. we also have corgi con happening in pleasanton this weekend, going out there to enjoy time with your best friend. it's going to be in the low 70s in the morning and then going throughout the day. we're headed for the low 80s, so really comfortable temperatures there as well. and all around the bay area we have the fiestas patrias happening in san francisco, redwood city, as well as the south bay. now we're going to see temperatures in san francisco in the mid 60s going into the afternoon. and mike, you have that traffic alert for south bay commuters. yeah, it's going to affect more of the south bay now because we're having that build. we expect typically northbound 101 approaching oakland road sees some slowing just about now. right now the backup is just showing the build as you're approaching the restriction north 101 down to just one lane at story road. a deadly crash happened early this morning. and so they have only the fast lane
5:42 am
open until the coroner can arrive and do the investigation. the backup starts back at capital expressway, and that may be where more folks cut over toward 87. and then take that north, joining back up with 101 north of the airport. the reason i'm concerned is, again, we talked about the first slowing. typically happening there. there may be a crash coming into morgan hill out of san martin. north 101 does show the slowing as more folks flood onto the roadway right about now, for the first burst into the south bay. so this could change the configuration of your commute as you travel north of highway 85. 101, split there as we look toward the east bay behind me. highway four typically shows that build. there's a little more focus slowing coming into bay point out of pittsburgh. that is a concern. i'll check for more crashes, but so far, none reported there. highway 37 shows your typical build out of vallejo and toward the north bay, a smooth drive south. once that crew cleared as you approach the golden gate bridge. and let me show you the contra costa county drive out to alameda county. that would be vasco road heading south to 580. we're at over 20 minutes now. 22 to make that stretch. back to you. all right. good to know.

climate in crisis. it will finally be easier for us to get cash back for our empty beverage containers. hundreds of new recycling drop off sites are coming to the state, including the bay area. now you may also start noticing reverse vending machines, like at places like smart and final, and you'll simply put in your empty bottles to get the crv money back and more. neighbors could also see a mobile recycling option. the funding comes from cal recycle, and its hope is to widen recycling efforts in the state, including to underserved areas and in rural parts of the state. this will boost consumer convenience for beverage container redemption and also it will help create, more recycled material for remanufacturers here in the state of california. cal recycle tells us that the details are still being ironed out about the use of artificial intelligence technology in the reverse vending machines. and

campaign stop using their family tragedy as election strategy. the family made an emotional appeal this week at springfield city hall. i wish that my son, aiden clark, was killed by a 60 year old white man. i bet you never thought anyone would ever say something so blunt. but if that guy killed my 11 year old son. the incessant group of hate spewing people would leave us alone. the last thing that we need is to have the worst day of our lives, violently and constantly shoved in our faces. but even that's not good enough for them. they take it one step further. they make it seem as though our wonderful aiden appreciates your hate. that we should follow their hate. and look what you've done to us. we have to get up here and beg them to stop using aiden as a

political tool is, to say the least, reprehensible for any political purpose. the death in aiden's the driver, rather in aiden's death, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. he and the rest of the haitian community that is in that community are living and working in ohio legally under an american humanitarian program, and not just ohio, of course, other states as well, like florida. here's republican senator from florida, rick scot. i have no idea what's going on. here's what i can tell you that in florida, we've got a great haitian community there, you know, they're wonderful people. i have a lot of time into it with them. i have, i have one of my employees is haitian background. she grew up in haiti. i go to churches with haitians. they're a big part of our state, and they're a wonderful part of our state. the myth that haitians are eating pets continues. donald trump recently, as tuesday, made those claims at the presidential debate, they're eating the dogs.

the people that came in there eating the cats, he said. reporters tracked down where that urban myth came from. turns out it was a facebook post where someone said her neighbor's daughter's friend had her cat eaten. now there is a video floating around of a woman in ohio, though not in springfield, cutting up a cat. that woman is a longtime american citizen and not haitian. both presidents biden and trump observed the september 11th tragedy yesterday. both visited the same firehouse in shanksville, pennsylvania. harris and vance joined biden and trump in new york city as well. vance just sat down with our colleagues at cnbc a few moments ago. we'll show you some of that interview coming up in our 6:00 hour. marcus. all right. thank you. scott. well, gen zers are racking up credit debt faster than any other generation, but it's not necessarily because they're bad at managing their money. many of them are entering the workforce with student loan

debt. we're entering these entry level jobs. the salaries haven't really been reflecting the increase in costs of living there. i also think that we just have more accessibility to these buy now, pay later options. so there's increasingly a number of different ways to put yourself in more debt rather than just traditional loans. now you're listening there to a financial expert. she's also a gen x'er and she says it's easier than ever to impulse buy anything from anywhere through nearly every mobile app. a classic sticking to a budget, but specifically for younger generations, make digital spending harder by actually deleting the credit card info from your apps or deactivating your tap to pay. you actually give yourself a moment to decide whether it's worth buying that item. she says that turning your bank card or credit card notifications on to make sure that you have a have the pay attention to your spending. that way you see it and it's like more realistic, right? and

address your high interest rate debt first. paying more than the minimum payment there so you can chop that debt down quickly. okay. well looks like the giants won't go away without a fight. even though their hopes for a postseason are slim at best. last night at oracle, they took on the playoff bound brewers, and the giants blew things open early, thanks in part to mike yastrzemski's three run home run. they win going away 13 to 2. giants wrapping up that series with milwaukee tonight and start a three game route with the padres tomorrow. you can watch the first game of that series tomorrow night at 7 p.m. right here on nbc bay area. not bad plans for friday night? not at all. weather wise, should be good. yeah, it's going to be great. we've had some nice weather. temperatures coming down. the wind has been an issue for us, especially for some of the hills near the coast. and it's still going to be a mild and breezy day, but a few degrees warmer tomorrow. but these temperatures that we are seeing are very normal for this

time of year, and will get even lower for the end of the weekend into early next week. as we put the rain chances in the forecast starting late sunday night. let's get a look at san jose. what to expect today. we're at 60 at 8:00. at noon it's 73 degrees and headed for the low 80s for today. as we zoom in to look at the south bay, 82 will be the high in morgan hill, 81 in east san jose. and for oakland, upper 70s martinez, 85, and 81, in pleasanton and near the coast. it's in the upper 60s. half moon bay, 68 degrees and breezy, while redwood city will hit a high of 75. really nice as well in san francisco with upper 60s and sunshine and 85 in napa. will also see about those same temperatures in ukiah today. so we have that low that was moving across the pacific northwest. and there is another one that's going to dip in for the weekend. that one is also going to go a little bit farther south. and may bring in some

rain chances for the sierra, as well as a stronger sea breeze for the bay. and giving us some gusty winds and lower temperatures. so look at the changes ahead going from mid 80s today to upper 80s tomorrow. then saturday looks nice with a mix of sun and clouds and low 80s there, and then mid 70s for sunday and by monday that's our coolest day in the 7-day forecast with some of our inland spots only in the low 70s. a lot of 60s as well. and we'll see 60s continue in san francisco. not as much in the way of fog for today, and it will be windy, but the wind will calm down for the weekend. and mike, you're tracking an alert. i don't even rai we're still looking at this crash north 101, restricting traffic to just one lane. this deadly crash happened before 5:00 this morning, and now we're looking at the backup extending back to capital expressway. we talked about the ripple. you'd see the highway 87. look at that. now we see early slowing for northbound highway 87. i believe people are using capital expressway as a connector or they're splitting off with 101
