new for you this morning, thanks to an 11th hour agreement, one peninsula school district will hold classes as planned this morning. a fast moving inferno continues to burn. we'll have the latest updates on evacuations and homes lost. plus history in space. our scott mcgrew breaking down the first steps on the spacewalk. unlike any other seen before. this is today in the bay. good morning to you on this thursday. thanks for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura

garcia. we're going to start out with the morning commute. it's been a rough one in the south bay. northbound 101. still a problem. still down to just one lane. and this won't change until the coroner has completed an investigation. yes, the coroner involved for this deadly crash. a pedestrian was on the right side of the roadway as he crossed over the story road off ramp there. and so we're looking at the restriction down in the northbound direction, your commute direction. you're backed up to capital expressway, which is also one way folks are traversing over to 87. you see early slowing there as well. that is an alternate to northbound 101 in the backup. as i said about 630 is when i expect the coroner to arrive for the investigation. based on past timing we've seen in crashes, similar cases as we're looking at northbound 101, traffic is jammed up. there's a crash at done. but really the big backup shows more traffic coming in out of san martin carey. so that will mean more backup for san jose. all right. we're taking a look at the tri valley this morning with a clear view as we take a look at dublin. and it's going to be nice and sunny today. a cool start with some

low 60s at 9:00. at 1:00 we're at 79 degrees. it's going to be very much like it was yesterday. still breezy, just not as windy. but we are going to have more comfortable weather all around the bay area with a touch a bit of a warm up for spots like concord with a high of 8785 in martinez and napa, and we'll see a high of 73 in san francisco. so we'll take a look ahead to a slight warm up, then a cool down. all of that coming up in the microclimate forecast. all right. looking forward to it. thanks, gary. well, all the hard work overnight with that 11th hour agreement. one peninsula school district will hold classes as planned this morning. teachers in half moon bay's cabrillo unified school district. they were set to launch that strike this morning. that would have impacted learning at all of the district's schools, seven of them total. but the union says just before midnight, a new tentative deal was reached addressing cost of living concerns. teachers will now have to vote to ratify the deal. developing now in southern california, an intense battle to

avert disaster. firefighters scrambling to protect thousands of homes threatened by raging wildfires. and now governor gavin newsom has declared a state of emergency today in the bay's bob redell live for us in the newsroom this morning. bob. bay area firefighters are now also taking their efforts and going down to help out as much as they can. correct. good morning to you, marcus and laura. a number of local fire agencies from here in the bay area, they are sending firefighters south to southern california to the front lines of those wildfires. we are with alameda county's fires crews, which was in the middle of a wildland fire training yesterday afternoon when they got the call to pack up and to head south. contra costa and san jose fire departments also deploying crews down there. there are three major fires burning down there in southern california. the largest and most concerning is the bridge fire, which has already scorched 50,000 acres in san bernardino county, near the border with l.a. county. we spoke with one family that learned through video on social media that sadly, the bridge

fire destroyed their house. it's hard to put in words to say, just what it feels like. yeah. we lost. we lost our sanctuary. it was, you know, our safe place. it was a home, not a house. the other two fires burning in southern california. the lion fire and the airport fire. the san francisco fire department has deployed engines and firefighters to orange county to help slow the spread for the fire. burning there. reporting live, bob redell today in the bay. thank you bob. well, if anger and frustration on full display in the south bay, as santa clara county leaders face backlash over a plan to repurpose a group of tiny homes. south san jose neighbors packed a meeting last night to get the county's plan to open a jail diversion program at the tiny home site on bernal and west monterey roads. the county plans to buy the site from the site, rather from the city. neighbors

accused the county of a lack of transparency in revealing its plans to convert it, but san jose's mayor also attended the meeting and told us he understands the frustration. the most recent month, year or two. the crime, the homelessness and we just feel like we're a dumping ground to be honest with you, that was disappointing. i think the community asked a lot of questions. i don't understand why the format was just one way questions without at least attempts at answers. i think there continues to be a lot of fear and concern, it's disappointing and concerning. and at this point is not something that i'm willing to support. people who live near the site say they only learned about the plan last month, but county leaders point out the new program would likely house many of the same people already there and not radically deviate from its current purposes. it would also include full time security now to decision 2024, and it is

back on the campaign trail for former president donald trump and vice president kamala harris. harris today kicking off a four day swing state tour. trump delivering remarks in arizona. now this all follows tuesday's night's debate with both candidates claiming victory today in the bay's brie jackson live for us in washington this morning and tuesday's clash still resonating with a lot of those voters out there. brie that's right. good morning marcus. so it's estimated that more than 67 million people tuned in to tuesday's debate. that's over 15 million more than when president biden and former president trump faced off back in june. so this marked a big opportunity for both candidates to make their case to voters in this critical stretch of the race. vice president harris and former president trump, both appearing at ceremonies wednesday commemorating the 23rd anniversary of the nine over 11 terror attacks, thomas danielle

trump supporters are trump supporters. i'm sorry, that's just the way it is for us. government officials say more than 330,000 people visited a voter registration link posted by the singer wednesday. it remains to be seen if those website clicks turn into votes on election day, and the first ballots of the general election are heading to voters. as alabama officials started mailing them out on wednesday. marcus. all right. a lot continuing when it comes to the decision 2024 brie jackson in washington this morning. brie. thank you. 607 right now we have a live look in louisiana, new orleans, where tropical depression francine made landfall yesterday. hundreds of thousands waking up in the dark this morning, some dealing with far worse conditions than that. francine hit the coast as a hurricane, and a few hours later, it was downgraded. it battered neighborhoods along louisiana's gulf coast with winds approaching 100mph. in
6:09 am
some cases, it led to flash flooding in new orleans. more than half a foot of rain fell as the storm passed through. let's check in now with meteorologist kari hall. francine. now a tropical depression, as i mentioned. yeah, so it has weakened, but it did make landfall as a hurricane and now has moved out of louisiana for the most part, and is centered right over jackson, mississippi. some of the rain bands also have the produce the potential to produce some tornadoes today for the florida panhandle into southern alabama. we'll be watching that as the potential of still another 4 to 6in of rainfall will be possible all across the gulf coast states. as we go into today. and then looking a little bit closer to home, we have that low that moved across the pacific northwest and is now moving over montana as well as idaho this morning as it moves away. our wind will calm down, but it was the difference in those pressure systems that made it very breezy yesterday. and it will be just a
6:10 am
few degrees warmer tomorrow in the inland valleys. but then looking ahead, we will be watching out for much cooler temperatures and possible rain chances for early next week, so i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike. that alert still continuing for san jose. it doe. carey and i don't think we'll have any updates or changes, at least until the coroner arrives on scene. unpleasant news to talk about the need for that report for northbound 101. but that is shoving traffic over here for early slowing on 87. after that first burst hit, things are a little calmer, but they're accessing each of the freeways traversing over on capitol expressway. expect more traffic on that major surface street as well. north 101 continues with the early build from capitol expressway to story road, or basically to 280 as you travel in the northbound commute direction. again, about a half hour from now, we should see the coroner arrive and hopefully they can reopen some lanes at that point. we have slowing southbound. there's a crash around lewelling for southbound nimitz. no major issues there. that should clear relatively quickly. and there's the continued build for the east shore freeway and the backup at
6:11 am
the bay bridge toll plaza, of course, back to you. thanks, mike. a serious warning over wi-fi coming up at 625. a resurging scam to steal your personal information. plus history happening high above your head as the astronauts open the door on that space capsule and take a walk in space out to the futures this morning. looks like it's going to be a sort of a break even day. plus, not your average concerto. a special festival about to get underway at golden gate park. keep it right here. we're going to talk about that. and so much more. you're watching today in the bay. i always like.

a live look outside in walnut creek. you're heading out the door to temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s. it is all clear. still a little breezy, and it will be a windy day. our high temperatures headed for the mid 80s here and still very nice and comfortable, but it will be a touch warmer compared to yesterday. we'll talk about the changes and what's ahead with more changes for early next week. that's coming up in a few minutes. as we look to the south bay, we continue with this jam, this traffic alert for a deadly crash. north 101 at story road. and the jam does force folks over toward 87, where there's a new crash at curtner in the northbound commute direction. that's complicating things. now we're hearing about an issue for

and i do think lina khan has occasionally gotten a little overaggressive there. but i agree with her on big tech. i really do. lina khan is the head of the ftc. i showed you that clip because we rarely see him speaking in that way. he's code switching just like all the other politicians, right? i mean, this guy knows roi over rr because of his experience as a venture capitalist. but when he's in small town pennsylvania, obviously he's not going to talk about, you know, that sort of stuff, right? he's from those small towns. he is from in ohio? yes. yes all right. thanks, scott. you bet. well, happening. starting today, there may be some music at your fingertips in san francisco's golden gate par. i wish i could play like that. oh, practice makes better. i know chopsticks. today marks the return of the flower piano festival in the botanical garden. this is video in fact, from last year. but for the next ten days or so, a dozen decorated pianos will adorn the

6:20 am
up at lunchtime. we're at a very nice 76 degrees and then going into the afternoon with some breezy winds, notice the southwesterly wind at about ten miles per hour, so it won't be as windy as yesterday, but we're looking at a breezy afternoon into the evening with those temperatures headed for the mid 80s and then quickly starting to dip again around sunset. around the rest of the bay area, you may notice that today is going to be just a little bit warmer in parts of the tri valley, as well as the inland east bay and the south county. morgan hill will hit a high of 82. it's also 82, will be the high in los gatos and in palo alto, 79 degrees going into tomorrow, it starts to heat up a little bit. we're up to 90 in concord, 91 in fairfield and vacaville, and 92 in ukiah. but that will be very short lived. on saturday. it's already starting to come back down. most of the inner bay, as well as the peninsula, will be
6:21 am
in the upper 70s and low 80s for san martin. so what's happening here is we're seeing the cooling load that brought us the stronger sea breeze yesterday is moving away, but there's another one back behind that and that's going to start to dip in between sunday and monday and may even bring some rain very close to the bay area. but we will all have a cool down. so we're going from highs in the mid to upper 80s to wrap up our workweek into a weekend with some very comfortable temperatures, 70s and 80s and then low 70s. that will be our coolest day on monday with a lot of 60s for san francisco. and once again, the wind gradually relaxing over the next couple of days. and mike, you have now an alert for bart riders. we just got alerted to a major medical emergency over at 16th mission station in san francisco. the way the alert is worded, it sounds like there may be something going on on the tracks causing them to stop trains in both directions through that station. so if they don't get a remedy quickly, that
6:22 am
could quickly ripple out through basically the rest of the system. we'll track that muni is a good option for you as an alternate form of mass transportation in the city. we've heard about no complications there. meanwhile, in the south bay, we continue with the shift. north 101 is jammed up towards story road. a deadly crash continues to be blocking all but your left lane. that shifts traffic over to 87, where we've had one, possibly two, crashes near curtner and heading north in toward downtown on north 87 capital expressway. likely to see a lot of traffic as folks shift out of the backup here. that happened very early. so that continues here. i'm going to i think that based on past timing, the coroner should be arriving soon. we may have some movement for lanes when they do their investigation, but right now we're still just one lane northbound 101 at story road. back to you. tough start of the day. thank you very much. 622 for you, this morning. next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds, beware of the evil twin. we're taking you halfway around the world to warn you about a wi-fi scam that's having a dangerous renaissance.

spoofs one you trust. australian police just arrested a man for duping people on a plane. it's believed to be the first arrest of its kind. the case surprised cybersecurity pros who told us evil twins were a threat early on with wi-fi, but then it died off. so this is kind of a revival of that attack. police say the accused impostor got airline passengers to fork over email and social media passwords. cops say the threat goes beyond flights and targets lots of public wi-fi like coffee shops, stores and libraries. see what you can do about it in our full story on nbcbayarea.com slash response. cyber pros recommend some smartphone house cleaning, maybe even a 180 with wi-fi. and we'll show you how. step by step. good to know. thank you very much, chris. well, we've got a lot more ahead at 630, including a key vote that may impact your bottom line. a new rate hike may be coming down the pg&e pipeline in

you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's get over to mike inouye this morning with a look at that traffic. mike still back up there on 101. yeah. we just got news, though, marcus. we have now three lanes of northbound 101 open. it was down to one lane since about 430 this morning. a deadly crash investigation still going on there at story road. but again, three lanes have opened. so i have hope that they can reopen the rest of the freeway soon. north is actually already starting to see recovery, but the backup to capital expressway folks know about this, and they've shifted over to 87, where we typically see a build in any way. there's a crash at curtner adding to the slowdown. that's for the south bay. now for the city. we also have an issue on the bart tracks over at 16th mission station. we just heard about a major medical emergency. trains are stopped in both directions, so muni will be your option through that area. we'll keep tracking this and i'll get you more updates, hopefully carey hopefully soon. back over to you. yeah waiting on bart this morning. it's going to be jacket weather. we are seeing the fog rolling over san

francisco this is looking at the sunrise from our sutro tower camera, and it's going to be very much like it was yesterday. just not as windy. it will still be breezy. we're looking at winds at about 20 to 30mph. and some of our usual more windy spots. and tomorrow a touch warmer. but we do have a fall-like pattern ahead. look at livermore today. we're going to go from low 60s at 9:00 to highs in the low 80s. overall, a nice day with a breezy wind and quickly dropping temperatures for later this evening. laura marcus. all right. thank you so much. kari. well happening today. cooler temperatures couldn't come at a better time because today, pg&e may get the green light to raise your rates yet again. this is for the third time. this year. and while it's not the largest hike, a lot of customers are getting fed up today in the bay's kris sanchez joins us with a look at why pg&e wants the latest increase and why it's likely to happen. well, pg&e says that they need to bump up your bill in order to make back what the utility lost
6:33 am
during all of those 15 major storms last winter. the california public utilities commission will vote on that increase today, and if they allow it, your pg&e bill will go up about $6 a month on average. if you're thinking, didn't the rates just go up? they sure did. there was a half percent. and that is just the one of two others. this year. this would be the third one in the last ten years. pg&e rates have increased 110%. now customers and the watchdog group turn are asking when is enough? enough? it's like, when is it going to stop? you know, is it just is it going to be every three months, every four months? it's just when, when does that stop? how do i know how to budget for our bills? $34 increase at the beginning of the year, customers were hit with another $4
6:34 am
increase in march, and there's going to be more before the end of the year. so what does pg&e say? officials point to some relief coming in october. a $55 one time climate credit pg&e officials also point to a 9% temporary rate decrease. that was supposed to give us some relief over the summer, and they say they're working to cut costs in order to bring prices down in the future. a pg&e bills average about $281 a month, which seems reasonable, right now. years ago, we might not have thought so right? but that's the average. which means that a lot of people are paying a lot more than that. and maybe not paying all of that. there are about a million pg&e customers who are behind, i would imagine, and pg&e money. it's very tough. we've had such hot temperatures lately as well. we were talking off camera to kari. i mean, these these bills are sky high.
6:35 am
they are really high. and, you know, it's just it's on top of a lot of other expenses that families have. very much so. all right. thanks, chris. turn off the lights. turn off the lights when you leave the room. i wish it was that easy. right. well, happening today, three suspects charged in a freeway shooting that killed a young girl. the due in court for a preliminary hearing. this happened back in april of 2023 on interstate 880, in fremont. that five year old girl, eliana crisostomo, was shot and killed as her family traveled to a birthday party. investigators later determined that that shooting was gang related, and it was a case of mistaken identity. developing right now in southern california, firefighters stretched to the limit, battling three wildfires. by far the largest is burning in san bernardino county. the bridge fire burning out of control and has now surpassed 50,000 acres. governor gavin newsom has declared a state of emergency. firefighters from alameda count,

contra costa and san jose among those now helping join the firefight in the bay area for san francisco today celebrates a long awaited reopening. we have a live look at the transamerica pyramid. it formally reopens today, just days before the reopening of the park, below which everyone will be able to enjoy today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live in san francisco. and ginger, this restoration will no doubt breathe a little new life into the area. and that is the hope. good morning, laura and marcus. it's been years in the making. it's led us to today, which is the formal reopening of san francisco's iconic transamerica pyramid. you can see it so clearly and beautifully here this morning. it is the second tallest building in san francisco, and pretty much anywhere in the city. you do have an opportunity to see it from so many different vantage points. now i want to share with you a bit from a piece that our colleague joe rosato jr did several months ago. he did this piece back in may, and it talks
6:37 am
about this restoration. he said the transamerica pyramid is like an exclamation mark on the financial district, and that is what you would imagine the owner and the team behind the building's modernization want to bring about, starting today. now, joe spoke to architect ben dobbin of foster and partners, who helped reimagine the building's future. here is the architect. several months back, speaking about the building's modernization. the first move was take as much as possible, which had already been incrementally put into place over time, and strip all of all of that away down to the bones. we spent months to match the same concrete look, feel and texture and materials as was used in the original facade. well, the reimagined transamerica pyramid has transformed its top levels to become working spaces, private working spaces. there's also a lounge and a fitness facility exclusively for its tenants that all used to be a public
6:38 am
observation deck. now, what is still open to the public is the redwood park, which has been closed since the pandemic that is also set to reopen now when that park was unveiled back in 1972, the trees were about 16 to 18ft tall and now they're about 150ft tall. in addition to all the fixing of some of the old stuff, there's also some more things in the pipeline that are really expected to transform the entire block, not just the building. now, the formal reopening ceremony kicks off at nine. it will last until 11 this morning and then later tonight there will be a pyramid light and sound show that starts at seven. we'll continue on until 11. so if you do have a chance, go ahead and try to drive by. maybe able to see it from different vantage points in san francisco. but it looks like it's nice and clear. beautiful morning so far to check this out guys. back to you. it's always been such a cool part of the skyline of san francisco. yes, there it is. thanks, ginger. now the question is, will it stay
6:39 am
clear? yeah, i think for the most part, you know, at times there will be some fog rolling around. but we also have the giants game later this evening. so maybe you'll be around the city anyway and then make your way over toward the transamerica pyramid. so for the game tonight, at first pitch, it will be in the upper 60s. still pretty windy out there. so you want to make sure you are layered up for those temperatures that will drop down into the low 60s by the end of the game. and then for the weekend, we have so much going on around the bay area, including the santa cruz county fair. it's going to be in the low 70s today and then cooling down to 51 tonight, and have a lot of evening events as well, and then we'll see it back into the low 70s tomorrow, a low of 53 degrees. and then on saturday at times some low clouds and fog with highs in the upper 60s. and if you'll be in san jose, it might be headed to the san jose state game on saturday. there we're also going to have some nice weather with low 70s to start, and in pleasanton at the
6:40 am
alameda county fairgrounds, corgi con will be happening. so take your best friend out there. have a great time. it's going to be nice and mild in the morning. starting out at about 66 degrees and headed for the low 80s. we'll talk about some more events going on. but mike, you have a few things you're covering. yeah that's right. and we few things are recovering as well as we have all lanes now. northbound 101 are clear at story road. the coroner's investigation has been completed and traffic flow restored. so quick recovery for these speeds. and now we do see north of there your typical slowing up toward oakland road and by the airport for north 101 again recovery north past capital expressway 87 sees a lot of slowing that crash at curtner is causing more distractions and slowing a little more slowing north of capital. there, the feed coming off of 85 and out of south county, as you would predict about now. good recovery also for the bart system. there's still a delay at the 16 mission station, but it's recovering in all directions from an earlier major medical emergency and no

so by getting the ultra surf package... i'm actually one step closer to going pro! (♪♪) his son out of their political speeches. scott mcgrew joins us now. 11 year old aiden clark was killed on his way to school. yeah. and this happened in spring, springfield, ohio, which is becoming a familiar town. we're all hearing about that ohio town because republicans from donald trump to jd vance to elon musk, are making untrue claims about the large population of haitian immigrants
6:45 am
who live there, claims they're killing people's pets and eating them. now, that's not true. what is true? that little boy, aiden, was killed when his school bus was hit by an unlicensed haitian driver. and this is what the trump campaign posted to recently to social media. aiden's father and mother are asking the campaign to stop using their family's tragedy as an election strategy. the family made an emotional appeal this week at springfield city hall. i wish that my son, aiden clark, was killed by a 60 year old white man. i bet you never thought anyone would ever say something so blunt. but if that guy killed my 11 year old son. the incessant group of hate spewing people would leave us alone. the last thing that we need is to have the worst day of our lives violently and constantly shoved in our faces. but even that's not good enough

for them. they take it one step further. they make it seem as though our wonderful aiden appreciates your hate. that we should follow their hate. and look what you've done to us. we have to get up here and beg them to stop using aiden as a political tool is, to say the least, reprehensible for any political purpose. the driver in aiden's death was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. now, he and the rest of the haitian community in that community are living and working in ohio legally under an american humanitarian program. it's not just ohio, of course. other states as well, like florida. here's republican senator from florida, rick scot. i have no idea what's going on. here's what i can tell you that in florida, we've got a great haitian community there, you know, they're wonderful people. i have a lot of time into it with them. i have, i have one of

my employees is haitian background. she grew up in haiti. i go to churches with haitians. they're a big part of our state, and they're a wonderful part of our state. now, the myth that haitians are eating people's pets continues. donald trump as recently as tuesday made those claims at the presidential debate. they're eating the dogs. the people that came in there eating the cats, he said. reporters tracked down where that urban myth came from. it turns out it was a facebook post where someone said her neighbor's daughter's friend had her cat eaten. now there is a video floating around of a woman in ohio, though not in springfield, cutting up a cat. now that woman is a longtime american citizen, and she's not haitian. both presidents biden and trump observed the september 11th tragedy yesterday. both visited the same firehouse in shanksville, pennsylvania. harris and vance joined biden and trump in new york city as well. now while at the firehouse, biden had a back and forth with a trump supporter. it was posted to social media. of

course, they joked about being old men. and then the president gave the trump supporter an autographed hat with the presidential seal on it. president biden then asked the man for his hat, a maga hat. the crowd cheered as the president put it on, the trump campaign was quick to joke. thanks for the support, joe. the white house says the president was participating in some bipartisan unity building on nine over 11. now we understand biden kept the maga hat and the trump supporter kept the president's hat. kerry scott now. scott. now let's turn to our climate in crisis. california is trying to make it easier for us to get our cash back for empty beverage containers. hundreds of new recycling drop off sites are coming to the state, including the bay area, and you might also start noticing reverse vending machines at places like smart and final. and you'll simply put in your empty bottles and get the crv money back. more neighborhoods could also see a mobile recycling option. the funding comes from cal recycle,
