also recovered a gun, and neighbors are stunned. i'm just really surprised this is not a neighborhood we experience anything like that other than what we experienced is leaf blowers and, you know, homeowners insurance cancellations. that's about it. we also know one of the two cars towed from the scene is registered to a couple lives nearby. anyone with information is being asked to contact either the orinda police or the contra costa sheriff's department office in orinda. it is 606 right now. the alum rock school district has a new leader. late last night, the school board announced herman cerda is the new superintendent. most recently, he was the assistant superintendent of educational services for the campbell union high school district. back in march. the school board voted to terminate its contract with hilaria bower. then the board president was removed two months later. the new superintendent will face school closures over

microclimates in the forecast coming up. and the earlier crash. we look at westbound 580 toward the dublin interchange. there was a crash approaching this area or just past this area. everything cleared from the roadway. no injuries. a smooth flow of traffic through the tri-valley. we'll talk about the rest of your build coming up. sounds good. we'll check back with both of you. it is quarter after six right now. let's take a live look at the futures. this morning. stocks are poised for a slight bump on the open on the heels of a two day winning streak for the dow. the nasdaq is riding a four day surge after chip makers led the way yesterday for the week. the s&p is up 3.5%. the nasdaq is 5% higher. markets open in less than 15 minutes. google is testing a new feature for its google wallet, allowing users to upload their u.s. passports to use at tsa checkpoints. google wallet already does something similar with state issued ids. more than 20 states and puerto rico have at least one airport that accepts them. and just last month, california started accepting ids from google and

apple wallet. new. this morning, apple is getting the green light for its hearing aid feature on the iphone and airpods. fda authorized it as the first over-the-counter hearing aid software device. it will allow people over the age of 18 to use their iphones and airpods as hearing aids. the fda says it's for those who have perceived mild to moderate hearing impairment. interesting. well, today we're not letting those friday the 13th fear stop us at all. we're here barely. i mean, we're we might double check where we're walking. but not marcus, not here today. maybe maybe that's the reason why. but we've been talking about superstitions this morning and we were wondering, what are your biggest superstitions? we asked in a poll on my instagram page and on x, what's your biggest superstition other than friday the 13th? apparently the overwhelming sentiment is it's all baloney. so don't worry about finding a lucky penny or a
6:18 am
black cat crossing your path or breaking a mirror bringing bad luck because apparently most people say it's baloney. although laura, you did remember that you broke a mirror a couple of years ago. i did, but i don't recall. well, maybe i should do the math on the date of hamby. yeah. i mean, you know, i mean, i didn't win the lottery in that time. i mean, so some bad things happened. not good things. good things. we had 15 major winter storms. all because my mirror broke. there you go, folks. no more mysteries. i just didn't want to make sure i held it up and it shattered. that's a whole different thing. it would never. yeah. you're the fairest of them all. that's what i tell my kids. i'm like, i am super fair. super fair. and they do like this. exactly they have mastered that, all right, well, you know what? friday the 13th, we're going to make it a great day. there you go. weather on the attitude. come on. weather wise, it does look a little bit warmer, but i
6:19 am
don't think that's bad luck. we're going to see our morning start. nice and cool. san rafael, you're at 50 degrees and at 7:00. we're still going to be there. nice. cool morning and a gradual warm up by 1:00. we're in the low 80s and it will be mostly sunny throughout the day. let's check out discovery bay one of our warmer spots where our temperatures go from upper 50s at 7:00 to 11:00 79, and it will be in the low 90s for today. and with all of that sunshine, we're seeing some spots like fairfield, vacaville and concord reaching into the low 90s, while oakland will be in the upper 70s and upper 60s along the coast in half moon bay. now, tomorrow it's only a couple of degrees lower, but at least we're not seeing as many 90s on the map here. it will be in the mid to upper seconds for the tri-valley and much of the north bay 84 in napa and santa rosa, and 71 in san francisco. on sunday. this is when it cools down. we'll see more clouds coming in and breezy winds, and we'll be watching a storm system
6:20 am
coming in from the north that could bring in some rain around redding and chico by late sunday night into monday, it looks like some of that wet weather starts to drop into the bay area and parts of the sierra could see some snow for those higher elevations. the bay area may see some spotty showers, so we'll be watching out for that. and that potential on monday, as the highs only reach into the low 70s. but the weekend though, of course we're focused on that. it looks really nice and cooling down by sunday. and more clouds in san francisco. mike. it looks like so far it's been friday light. yeah, so far so good. little build up overhead. richmond i don't want to jinx it. friday the 13th. knock wood. that's the wood screen behind me. we're looking at a smooth drive right now on the approach. and those speed sensors just start to slow a little bit there, as well as through richmond for westbound 80. no major issues we have seen. look at this. in addition to the little slowing we see on highway four that's been holding now more slowing for 242. so there is a build coming down through that part of contra costa county
6:21 am
walnut creek interchange. the 680 corridor moves very smoothly. a good flow of traffic there. as we look out to the rest of the roadways, we had some slowing approaching 24 and the 13 interchange, but no major issues, and the slowing at the bay bridge toll plaza as just after the metering lights as the lanes narrow. back to you. thanks, mike. so are you getting that 90s vibe at your office or the kids school recently? coming up next on today in the bay, we check out the trend that has the hottest supplies going retro. first, a reminder as we head to break. the giants kick off a three game with the padres, and you can watch that first game of the series tonight at seven on nbc bay area. we'll be right back

now one corporation is doing what it can to support her. our garvin thomas has the story in this morning's bay area. proud. good morning everyone. there's a teacher in the south bay. i want to tell you about stacey bibeau teaches eighth grade at price middle school in san jose. stacey says in the 25 years since she started teaching, she's seen the mental health of her students decline. more depression, more anxiety. more isolation. helping them became such a big part of her job. stacey decided she needed help, so she turned to nami, the national alliance on mental illness, and now every eighth grader in her school gets a unit on dealing with mental health. stacey was so grateful for the
6:25 am
help. she and her students formed a team to participate in nami's yearly fundraising walk, and over the past three years have raised more than $30,000. you can experience the whole story at nbc bay area.com/bay area proud, as well as hundreds of other stories of people being good to each other in the bay area. and tomorrow, garvin thomas is partnering with stanford for his eighth annual bay area proud blood drive. it happens from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at princeton plaza on blossom hill road in san jose. you can sign up to donate at sb donor.org, or scan the qr code on your screen right now. eight years. that first one was like, i don't know if anybody's going to show up. very cool. i sure have. all right. school supplies are suddenly going old school. there's a retro trend going on when it comes to back to school items. take the good old trapper keeper binder and organizer. it is new again, as is the bright colored school gear inspired by

lisa frank. oh my goodness. right now, on average, households spend $140 on supplies each year, and one expert told the today show retro supplies are helping to bridge the gap between millennials and gen z, while providing a small sense of comfort. people prefer or turn to nostalgic items, especially in times where things might seem a little bit chaotic because they connect the past with the present. this gives us kind of a sense of stability and continuity. you can watch the full story on the today show coming up at 7:00 right here after today in the bay. well, let me pull out my smelly sticker collection. oh, my god, that is cool. we've got a lot more ahead at 630, including rising gas prices, despite prices continuing to fall across the country. california not catching a break. what's driving that increase? plus, an eye opening look at the housing crisis in the south bay. we have new data that reveals more about the number of people who are

some say it's impossible to fix san francisco. they also said you couldn't escape from alcatraz. but watch me do both. other candidates want to tear down san francisco, but i'll build on what's already great to make it even better. with expanded rent control, new homes for the middle class community policing to reduce crime, and an inspector general to root out corruption. let's get to work.

people are calling a critical fundraiser. popular berkeley businesses are fed up with the drastic new legal action being taken in response to the city's homeless crisis and the policies they say got them there. and we are looking live outside our window this morning, inching closer to the weekend. and meteorologist kari hall is tracking the outlook for whatever your weekend plans are. this is today in the bay. it is a freaky friday morning because marcus washington is not here. i'm here instead. it's not that. have you? come on. and i'm laura garcia. so let's start out this half hour with a look at the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. good one on tap. yes. and we're starting out with a clear skies, sunshine. but we know sometimes that means warmer temperatures. and it will be a warmer afternoon. but we do still have a cool start with our
6:31 am
morning in the upper 50s. it's 58 in walnut creek, while 54 in san francisco and 61 now in san jose. looking at fremont and your morning commute and on your way to work, it will be in the mid 50s here, as we look at the trend, will be in the low 70s at 11:00 and in the upper 70s by 1:00 today only headed for 81 here. 84 in san jose, but there will be some low 90s as you make your way into the inland east bay, as well as farther north and cooler weather coming in for the weekend. so we'll talk about that. mike, you're hearing about a fire along 101. it's a roadside fire. i'm concerned because reports of a eucalyptus tree on fire and those can get on fire. pretty, pretty good sized fire pretty quickly. so we'll watch that south 101 as you're heading past candlestick. if you visualize the area folks no lanes closed on 101. i'll track that closely. it's a smooth drive right now along the peninsula, though. the east bay shows your typical slower spots on a friday. a little bit lighter for that build of traffic, and the backup at the
6:32 am
toll plaza now off the overcrossing, but not a problem out of the maze. we'll send it back to you. yeah. pretty light traffic there. thanks mike. well, two decision 2024 and in just a few hours, the gop presidential nominee, donald trump, will arrive here in the bay area. and the former president is making this visit focused entirely on boosting his war chest. that's right. today in the bay's bob redell live in woodside. this morning, close to where the former president will visit. and i would imagine they're hoping to raise a lot of money. the price tag is pretty high. absolutely. so we're talking about tens, if not hundreds of thousands, possibly into the millions of dollars for president trump, who former president trump, who's obviously running for reelection, he will be at a private fundraiser at a home not far from where we're at here in the town center of the city of woodside, the town of woodside. this private event is set to happen early this afternoon at the home of tech ceo tom siebel, who happens to
6:33 am
be related to jennifer siebel, the wife of democratic governor gavin newsom. tickets range for this fundraiser from $3,000 for a solo ticket to as high as a half million dollars for vip couple tickets. his visit comes a few days after the debate with vp kamala harris, and also in the middle of campaigning and battleground states like arizona. president trump indicating yesterday that there will be no more debates with harris. here's political analyst larry gerston. you can bet that the money he raises here, he's going to take to those swing states as fast as possible. the question over the weekend, really, once the rest of these polls come in, is, is does it represent a turning point and thereby make it more difficult for trump to raise funds? donald trump, you know, i'm expecting a lot of support in this area, but i think there's equally a lot of people who are pro harris. and
6:34 am
so i'm not surprised that he's in this area, but hopeful that we'll continue to raise money for kamala harris. i'm not a supporter, but hey, it's a free country so he can go where he wants. according to the san mateo county republican party, there's a rally scheduled at el camino park in palo alto later this morning to welcome the former president as he heads to this fundraiser. the president expected to be out later this afternoon for a fundraiser tonight in las vegas. vice president kamala harris, she was on the campaign trail in north carolina last night. you could hear the crowd there. she still calling for a second debate with former president trump. even though he's again saying no. the harris campaign says she's raised $47 million in the 24 hours after tuesday's debate. her biggest haul since she announced her candidacy back in july. later today, harris campaigns in pennsylvania

counties that trump won. trump won back in 2020. reporting live here in woodside, bob redell today in the bay going to be a busy day there. thank you very much, bob. and a reminder you can stay up to date with the latest on election news by downloading our free nbc bay area app. there you'll be up to the minute on results on election night. it's available for all smartphones. well, developing now, at least three large wildfires are burning in southern california, and the bridge fire is sparking new evacuation orders. this is new video from the town of wrightwood, which is in the san bernardino mountains. that fire, now burning more than 51,000 acres in los angeles and san bernardino counties combined. firefighters say they have lighter winds and higher humidity, which slowed things down just a bit. but there is still no containment. about 40 homes and cabins have burned in this fire. a group of business owners fed up with encampments in berkeley are taking new legal action. a new lawsuit filed against berkeley claims people
6:36 am
living in tents and rvs are creating traffic, health and safety hazards, and it's keeping customers away from local businesses in berkeley's northwest and southwest neighborhoods. the group is suing includes the owner of boychuk bagels. she says at times, unhoused people have blocked the sidewalk and started fires. the merchants are simply asking, they say, for city to enforce rules which are already on the books. early in covid, there were a lot of exceptions made and everyone said, you know, this is okay, this is going to be temporary. but covid is over, fortunately. and it's everyone in the neighborhood has really run out of patience. the three encampments cited in the suit include one on harrison street, one on long creek, and the lower dwight encampment on dwight way. the city is not commenting due to pending litigation, while that lawsuit comes as we have eye-opening, new numbers indicating long term surge in unhoused people in the south bay. the nonprofit destination home recently found
6:37 am
a 24% increase in people becoming unhoused in santa clara county over a two year period ending in 2023. that means 4300 households lost their housing. it also marked a big jump from the 9% increase covering the prior two year period. our partners at the san jose spotlight say there are two major factors contributing to this spike the effects of the end of the covid ban on on evictions. so now we're looking at almost 23,100 people who have been evicted, which is the highest number since 2014. the other thing is we don't have enough affordable housing within the county or san jose. also, families living in shelters and tiny homes lack the financial means to transition into that permanent housing when it's available. advocates say that's creating a logjam, leaving a lot more people living on the streets across the country. gas prices are falling. but wouldn't
6:38 am
you know it? not if you live here in california. triple a puts the current national average for regular unleaded at $3.24 a gallon, and it's expected to head even lower. california's average is now at 4.76 a gallon, up $0.10 from last week alone. experts say there's less supply here, with west coast refineries conducting routine maintenance because there is a crunch of supply because new gas isn't being made at some facilities. it means gasoline prices go up. so they do this right now because this is after that summer driving surge. it's a lull before the holidays happen. well, experts do say once that maintenance work is completed, gas prices should begin to slide lower again. all right. 638 now and this weekend, nbc bay area and telemundo 48 will be celebrating hispanic heritage, which is observed every year between september 15th and october 15th this weekend. our cinthia pimentel will hold fiestas patrias in redwood city celebrating mexican independence day, which is actually on
6:39 am
monday. monday dsc says this september there will be food, arts and crafts vendors and a traditional flag ceremony conducted by the consul general of mexico. this is at the courthouse square, starting at 3:00 in the afternoon. redwood city, kari hall what's the forecast looking like for that? it looks amazing. and of course, cynthia is going to make sure the weather is nice. so we are going to have some sunshine temperatures there in redwood city in the low 70s, and a breezy wind as we go into the evening. it will become mostly cloudy later on, but we are looking at some really nice conditions there in redwood city as well as across the bay area. tonight we're kicking off our weekend with the giants game right here on nbc bay area. we'll be able to watch if you're going to oracle park, it will be right at about 63 degrees at first pitch and breezy. it will be mostly sunny and then cooling down into the low 60s as the sun sets. upper 50s by the end of the game. we also have corgi con
6:40 am
happening in pleasanton at the alameda county fairgrounds. this looks like such a fun event and it's going to be in the upper 60s at 10:00 and then making it into the low 80s. so even nice weather there in pleasanton. and then for tomorrow evening at san jose state football game will be in the mid 70s to start. and then in the mid 60s into the evening. so really great and comfortable evening there. and then also wrapping up the weekend with the fiestas patrias happening in san francisco. this one, one of the bigger events across the bay area. it's going to be in the mid 60s to start and then mostly cloudy, and you might want to wear some layers. there might be a little chilly throughout the evening. and then there's also the santa santa cruz county fair happening in watsonville. a little warm today with some low 70s, but cooler for the rest of the weekend, with mid to upper 60s for highs and overnight lows in the mid 50s. we'll talk about the changes for the bay area coming up. and mike, you have a look
6:41 am
