of setbacks for boeing, which includes the two fatal 737 max crashes in 2017 and the infamous incident earlier this year when a door plug blew off one of their planes mid-flight. for the latest on where things stand, we go to tom costello. >> boeing insiders were telling us they did expect a strike vote. workers are angry over wages stagnant since 2018 and then their pensions were eliminated. now those workers will strike with production at an iconic american brand now on hold. companies already in trouble. this is a big blow. 30,000 workers at boeing are on strike. production expected to come to a halt on many an aircraft line, a significant assumption at one of america's biggest exporters making everything from commercial planes to military

jets to air force one. in seattle and oregon rejecting an agreement. >> this is about fighting for our future. our members rejected the contract by 94.6%. >> reporter: that agreement included wage increases of at least 25% and other benefits. workers said it wasn't enough and that pay has been stagnant for years. the ceo called it an unprecedented offer and urged workers not to sacrifice our future together because of the frustrations of the past. those frustrations have been mounting. it is the latest in a series of major setbacks for the company after that mid-air door plug blow-out in january, which led to multiple investigations and a hammering on capitol hill. >> you are trying to squeeze

every piece of profit you can out of this company. >> reporter: and in july, boeing agreed to plead guilty to criminal fraud charges tied to two fatal max 737 crashes overseas. >> starliner is on a perfect trajectory. >> reporter: boeing has been in the headlines for its spacecraft division as two astronauts set to return on a boeing starline ship have been delayed for months. after the aircraft safety issues, boeing said it is committed to change, slowing down production on the line and putting safety practices in place and the new ceo that started this month now facing a crisis at the company as workers walk out in a strike that could have a national impact. >> that's a lot of them. that can affect the economy after a couple months, you know? being that we're so close to the holidays. >> reporter: yeah. boeing is out with its own statement on the strike vote.

it says the following. the message, it says, was clear that the tentative agreement was not acceptable. we look forward to resetting our relationship with our employees and the union. we look forward to getting back to the table. the last strike at boeing was back in 2008 and lasted about 50 days. by the way, the brand-new ceo just signed on within the past couple of months. his salary now, total compensation, more than $30 million a year. >> tom, thank you very much. all right. let's turn now to the race to the white house. with the election less than two months away, vice president harris and former president trump are pressing messages to voters. we are hearing from trump himself why he is ruling out another debate with his rival. he's in los angeles. hey, garrett. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, donald trump is out west

today mostly to race campaign cash. but the fallout from this week's contentious debate is reverberating with the former president claiming he won, but then he won't debate again. >> i ask you today, north carolina, are you ready to make your voices heard? >> reporter: overnight kamala harris slamming donald trump for his debate performance. >> it was the same old show. same old tired play book we've heard for years. with no plans for how he would address the needs of the american people. well, folks, look, it's time to turn the page. >> reporter: the vice president holding two post-debate rallies in north carolina, a key battleground state that she hopes to turn blue since 2008. harris welcoming a rematch. >> i believe we owe it to the voters to have another debate. >> reporter: donald trump campaigning thursday defending his debate performance while attacking the administration over immigration.

>> people said i was angry at the debate, angry. i was angry. and, yes, i am angry. >> reporter: and vowing not to return to the stage with the vice president, despite previously agreeing to three debates this fall. >> because we have done two debates and because they were successful, there will be no third debate. >> reporter: mr. trump also mocking the moderators and complaining on unfair treatment. the former president again pushing a conspiracy theory that haitian migrants in springfield, ohio are taking pets for food. >> they're taking to geese. and even walking off with their pets. my dog has been taken. >> reporter: on thursday, springfield was forced to close its town hall and elementary school after receiving a bomb threat. the city's mayor saying it included threats about the haitian migrants in the city. there is one other reason on the debate front that harris may

you. all around, you can see homes that look just like this, unrecognizable. the orange county department of public works facing criticism because they say one of their construction crews sparked this fire while using heavy equipment. as fires burn in the hills of southern california, there are an increasing number of stories of survival and heroism, including the rescue of this woman walking barefoot through her community thursday night before being picked up. did you ever think you would end up in a situation like that? >> absolutely not. that's one thing i hope i never see again. >> reporter: the woman was intense pain adding another 5 to 10 minutes in those conditions might have been fatal. there have luckily been no deaths in association with these fires and you likely prevented one. >> that feels good. >> reporter: 5 million people remain under red flag warnings. an emergency declaration after two counties after touring the

fire zone. >> it is hard to put in words. >> reporter: the martin family lost their home, watching it burn from a neighbor's nest camera. >> it is hard to lose all our memories. >> reporter: fires have destroyed hundreds of homes. it comes as the 4.7 magnitude quake hitting just west of los angeles. one of several quakes to hit the area in recent weeks. experts warn aftershocks are likely in the coming days. meanwhile, suspected arsonist, justin halstenberg is accused of starting the line fire that the da says, if convicted, he faces life in prison. savannah? >> thank you very much. also this morning heavy rains from the remnants of

francine are pushing north ward after the storm lashed louisiana as a strong category two hurricane. tens of thousands without power. kathy park is in louisiana. good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda. good morning to you, yeah. this is a fast-moving system packing quite a punch. wind gusts 80 miles an hour. this is one example of the destruction left behind. a 30,000 square thrift shop partially destroyed. you are taking a look at drone footage showing the exposed items inside the roof peelback. fortunately no injuries to report, but this morning, still thousands are still without power. this morning, millions across the south dealing with the aftermath of francine. some homes surrounded by flood waters in just minutes.

the category two hurricane roared ashore thursday night, toppling trees and ripping roofs to shreds. this thrift shop completely torn apart. what was your reaction when you came out here? >> wow. it is just a little overwhelming. >> reporter: andrew short survived a devastating blow. a tree falling on his home, nearly crushing him on his couch. >> we just cleaned all this out. but the sheet rock fell. >> reporter: now 48 hours later, the clean-up is just beginning. >> that's not good. >> reporter: power crews rushing to make repairs as tens of thousands remain in the dark across the coast. no deaths reported, despite hundreds of rescues, like this dramatic scene that played out on scene. an er nurse rushing to save a

driver, whose vehicle was submerged in chest deep water, smashing the truck windows with a hammer to pull the man out. >> it was rising like very fast. by the time i got him out of there, the entire truck was submerged. >> reporter: louisiana's governor commending crawford's actions, while urging residents to take these storms seriously. >> i want to remind the people of louisiana that we put out these warnings specifically to avoid these kinds of situations. >> reporter: and overnight, handing out food and water to those impacted by the storm. >> this is a resilient town. >> reporter: and as you can see, southern louisiana is still very much in recovery mode. new orleans public schools close today, and the governor of louisiana says he's hopeful all power will be restored by sunday. his biggest concern is a possibility of more storms this concern. hoda? >> yeah, it is that time of

year. kathy park for us in louisiana. thank you. >> al has his eye on this extreme weather and all the weather for the weekend. >> good morning to you. we are looking now at post tropical francine, 90 miles west-northwest of memphis. right now here is the problem. only moving westerly at 3 miles an hour. it goes to show with climate change and more warm air and more moisture, these things, even when they are not a storm, they can cause problems. tomorrow this will cause scattered storms from florida into tennessee. rivers running high and creeks in northern and central alabama. rain fall rates 2 to 3 inches per hour. we could see upwards of 5 to 6 inches of rain in central alabama. heavy showers along the eastern coast.

down and takes a shot. >> reporter: this morning another frightening moment for nfl star tua tagovailoa, after the miami dolphins quarterback who has suffered from a string of head injuries on the field left the game last night against the buffalo bills with yet another concussion. >> here it is again. shot from hamlin right there. down he goes. check him out. >> reporter: late in the third quarter, tagovailoa collided head-first into bills' safety damar hamlin. he was attended to on the field before exiting with a noticeable limp, but under his own power. today's kaylee hartung was working on the sideline for the game. >> he has been ruled out with a concussion. they were able to determine that just six minutes after he left the field and went into the locker room. >> reporter: mike mcdaniel

who kissed tua on the head as they left the field, was concerned. >> i was just worried about my guy. >> reporter: while he did not miss a game in 2023, he did suffer a series of concussions in 2022, including this hard hit during a game against the buffalo bills. he returned to that game, but just four days later was sacked again, suffering a scary concussion that shocked the sports world and raised questions about whether he came back too soon. >> you could see both his hands. >> reporter: the qb laying on the field for more than seven minutes and making a similar movement echoed in last night's injury. now some in the sports world calling for his retirement. >> if i'm him at this point, i'm seriously considering retiring from football. this is something that can affect you long-term. >> reporter: damar hamlin who collided with tua and became a household name himself took to social media and wrote, quote, sending you strength and healing for a speedy recovery. craig? >> jesse, thank you. we hope that tua gets better as

courtroom and a new judge. the idaho supreme court selecting boise as the new location for trial next summer. kohberger spent two years in the county jail after being charged with the murders of four university of idaho students, kaylee goncalves, madison mogen, xana kernodle, and ethan chapin. a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. now he will be moved 300 miles south to ada county, which is a much larger jury pool. the state court selecting boise as the new trial location as the judge found the media frenzy over the case tainted potential views of kohberger and logistical and safety concerns were too great for the small community to handle. >> many volumes larger than the latah county courthouse.

and we just completed having two venue change sensational murder trials, so the administrative judge has established a protocol for how to handle the securities, the camera, the public. >> reporter: the judge steve hippler will now preside over the kohberger trial. >> he has a strong personality. he's an intelligent man. he is very inclined to keep control of his courtroom. >> reporter: describing the preparations for other high-profile trials in boise last year. >> we have big trials here all the time. >> reporter: the parents of kaylee goncalves praising the appointment of a new judge in the case. >> find a man with some character and leadership, and let's hit the ground and let's go. >> they now say in a statement in part, quote, we are confident the physical location of the trial will make no difference in the end.

difference. to understand how long ellis chase has been living with pain, you have to go back to the 1960s when, as a teenager, he was diagnosed with arthritis and later a spinal issue. more recently, neck problems. >> when you have extreme pain, on a scale of one to ten, how bad is it? >> i would say in the last few years, it would go as high as an 8. >> three, two, one. >> epidurals like the one he's getting here from his doctor help alleviate the agony, but ellis never managed his doctor would recommend something that, life in the '60s. >> one day, he said, have you thought about medical marijuana? i said, does it get me high? can i be in 1968 again, please? >> he's not smoking it like he did in his younger years.

instead, the 77-year-old is taking a capsule like all his other meds. he doesn't get high, but he does get sleep. >> i have more energy. i can work out more. i'm still working. i just have way more energy at times of day that i didn't used to have energy. >> ellis is far from alone. in 2007, just 0.04% of seniors used marijuana. in 2022, that number skyrocketed to 8%. that's a 20,000% increase. >> better. >> better. >> still not where it wants to be. >> this doctor is director of integrative pain management at new york's mount sinai hospital. >> i think older patients have an interesting situation. tylenol may not work. opioids have an epidemic risk associated with it. anti-inflammatories can damage their kidneys. so they're left wondering what can i do to help me with my pain. so they are turning more and more to medical marijuana. >> he does have concerns because

of the federal ban on marijuana. doctors just don't have enough research. he says the research out there is all over the map. one recent study found that cannabis-related disorders like overuse and addiction have increased among older adults. >> we have to be careful for, is we don't want to replace an opioid epidemic with a marijuana epidemic. >> when people are inquiring about this, your advice is? >> i would say view it like any alcoholic substance. >> with medical marijuana now legal in 38 states, plus washington, d.c., popularity is surging at dispensaries. >> right now 20% of our base is our senior population. which to me is an astronomical number. >> here pharmacists work with older patients like ellis. >> take the capsules right now. >> yes. >> to figure out how they want to take cannabis, vaping, edibles, capsules or another way.

i get a little bourbon, i'm ready to go. >> one bourbon and you sound like matthew mcconaughey. >> this is my mom's secret recipe. i call it trish's chili. you want to throw the beef in. so you want to brown the beef and drain the fat, but then save a little bit. put the onions and chili pepper in. cumin. then the secret is spicy v8 juice. >> i love it. where does that come from? >> it adds the vegetable flavors. she was a mom on the go trying to make something fast. >> it takes the place of -- >> instead of a chunky tomato sauce, it makes it all about the meat, which is what a texas chili is. there's no beans in texas chilc. >> what are you missing? >> it only cooks for 30 minutes and it's done. so you have your chili here. now we will make our chili dogs in a blanket. are you ready? we will put cheese down first because that's the moisture
