in today's mental health check, here's something a lot of us can relate to. we get to work and ready to have a productive day, but the calls start rolling in and there are the nonstop messages, e-mails, the slack channel and the meetings that could have been done by an e-mail. suddenly it's time to log off and we barely got anything done. if that sounds familiar, our next guest has tips on how to work less and get more done. love the sound of that. joining me is the author of "slow productivity."
12:47 pm
cal, good to see you. in your book, you say that our definition of productivity has to change. what do you mean? >> we focus too much on a definition centered on activity. doing more things is better than doing less. we need a definition focused on results. what are you actually producing that's valuable. >> so how do we become more productive without working more? >> one of the big problems we have in our current moment the is we do too many things. the administrative overhead of each of our obligations begins to pile up. and our time left to actually accomplish the underlying work goes down. so paradoxically, doing too much means we're going to accomplish less. doing less means we might accomplish more. >> we got some things on the screen that you shared with us. go through a few of the tips. what real practical tips on how to use our time more wisely.

>> one simple idea. have office hours. regular time each day where people who have a question that you otherwise would have just talked about in slack or e-mail back and forth can show up and talk in realtime about it. another idea is add 15 minutes to the end of each meeting so you can actually process and write down and make sense of everything that was just discussed clearing your mind to move on to what comes next. >> it's funny because "the wall street journal" just had a report out on how some banks are curbing young banker's hours because there were so many complaints about being overworked and people were staying until 10:00 at night. is it a cultural thing where if you feel like you have to be there for many hours to be productive and everybody around you is staying at the office late, does that create a culture? >> it is cultural. it's a culture that's called sooud productivity. let's use visible activity as our main proxy. if your culture is sue do productivity, you'll want to
12:49 pm
work more hours because that's the only way to prove you're valuable. we have to break that culture. >> what can employers do to help, to get their workers to feel less overwhelmed and be more productive? >> i think two things can make a difference. one, have time for those no meetings aloud. so people can actually make progress. and two, keep track of how many concurrent projects or big objectives people are working on and don't let that list get too long. keep workloads reasonable and people can execute that work in a reasonable amount of time. >> last quick question. four-day workweek, super buzz sit. what do you think? >> i think if you embrace a slower notion of productivity, that works fine. if you embrace sooud productivity, four-day workweek is going to be terrifying. activity being your main measure of usefulness, it would be
12:50 pm
terrifying. >> so it's about using it well. and a four-day workweek means like eight hours a day, four days a week. we're not talking about longer days. >> exactly. so if we're looking at results, a four-day workweek could be fine. if you're looking at busyness as your marker, the reason why a four-day workweek is terrifying to a manager is it will seem like you're doing less. once you switch results, four days might be more than enough. >> i hope you're right. i love everything you're saying. it makes sense and tracks with it makes sense and tracks with my life here at nbc news. protect against rsv with arexvy. arexvy is a vaccine used to prevent lower respiratory disease from rsv in people 60 years and older. arexvy does not protect everyone and is not for those with severe allergic reactions to its ingredients. those with weakened immune systems may have a lower response to the vaccine. the most common side effects are injection site pain, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, and joint pain. arexvy is number one in rsv vaccine shots.
