immigrants en masse. we will do large deportations from springfield, ohio. springfield officials are saying they are there legally and president biden is also pushing back. >> the community is under attack in our country right now. simply wrong! there's no place in america. this has to stop. >> reporter: meanwhile, nbc news tracked down a springfield woman behind the early facebook post credited with sparking the claim. she now says the claim is false. adding she misinterpreted a neighbor's story about a missing cat and never meant to spark false, dangerous rumors about immigrants. amid all this, members of the hatain community, they are afraid for their lives. laura. >> nothing founded. maggie, thank you. firefighters in california are working around the clock

with the several wildfires that forced evacuatios in the last week. we have liz kroitz with the latest. >> reporter: tens of thousands of people remain evacuated right now. people are returning to their homes and in some cases, they are finding nothing left. we are also learning more about the woman who was seen walking barefoot through flames. the battalion chief who rescued her said the woman was in pain screaming for help. he jumped into action calling it surreal and saying he was simply doing his job. now, one of the fires, the bridge fire, has been burning dangerously close to popular ski resorts. one of them, you can see here, activated their snow machines to

save the property. the line fire started by justin holstenberg. his arraignment is scheduled for monday. the good news is the weather conditions have improved here and the temperatures dropped significantly as have the winds. the hope is, guys, help firefighters gain the upper hand. peter. >> liz with the latest from california. thank you. let's bring in angie. good news for firefighters? >> liz is right. we have maybe 20 or 25-mile-an-hour winds in the higher elevations, but much lower in the lower elevations. we is air quality alerts up through 8:00 p.m. here tonight across the region. specifically across san bernardino county where we have unhealthy levels due to the smoke. the other story is across the southeast. we are still dealing from what is left over from francine. that impacted louisiana and the

end of our last week, but we are still dealing with the rain and flood alerts are up for 6 million people stretching from nashville to jacksonville. the system meanders around. this will be something to last through tomorrow and a gloomy pattern will persist with more heavy rain. we turn to the southeast where we will see another area of low pressure develop potentially and leave us with heavy rain across the carolinas on top of the potential for rough surf. >> thank you, angie. we turn to the war in ukraine and fears of a wider conflict. president biden and uk's prime minister met on friday allowing ukraine to use long-range missiles to strike deep inside russia, but vladimir putin is

warning of severe consequences if that happens. we have danielle here with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, peter. the war in ukraine was high on the agenda during the meeting between both leaders, but no decision has been made public. the ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy has been pleading with allies for months to fire long-range missiles deep into russian territory. we're talking about the u.s. attack and british storm shadows. ukraine says the long-range weapons will allow forces to destroy air bases and other targets that are killing ukrainian civilians. the ukrainian military cannot hit those russian targets. the u.s. and uk appear increasingly open lifting restrictions which prompted a warning from vladimir putin. the russian president saying if

ukraine fired into russian territory, he would consider u.s. and other nato countries directly involved and, therefore, at war with russia. his remarks signal he may be willing to escalate against the west and in response, some western officials is concerned with acts of sabotage against the infrastructure or nato bases. >> danielle, this is a contentious issue for a long time. what is the issue on the wider war between russia and ukraine? >> reporter: the russian defense ministry announced this morning its forces have captured the village in ukraine's eastern donetsk region after the overnight drone attack on kyiv. there were no immediate reports of casualties. as you can imagine, this prompted president zelenskyy to issue a fresh appeal for more defense and long-range missiles. >> we'll be there to cover it.

thank you for the latest from london. back here at home, the paramedic convicted in the death of elijah mcclain is set to be freed. he was serving a five--year sentence for negligent homicide for giving the 23-year-old black man a lethal dose of ketamine. this started after the suspicion person wearing a ski mask. he had a blood condition that made him feel cold. the judge in the case who ordered probation said there were extenuating circumstances in the case. today is day two of the boeing strike. a major impact on flights in this country. more than 30,000 workers in the pacific northwest walked off the job early friday morning demanding more pay and better benefits as boeing struggles to recover from the accidents and lawsuits and investigations. we have senior correspondent tom costello with the latest.

tapper, a bay area city, is suing its local school district. it's happening in oakland, where the city claims the oakland unified school district is refusing to pay its share for recent school board elections.

specifically, last year's special election for school board director. along with other elections in 2020 and 2022, state law requires school districts cover those costs. but the lawsuit by the city claims the total amount the school district owes is about $1.5 million. we reached out to ousd, which says it does not comment on pending litigation. california could soon become the first state in the u.s. to label gas stoves as potentially toxic. state lawmakers have passed a bill requiring warning labels on all new gas stoves and ranges. the labels would alert buyers to the potential respiratory health risks of cooking with a gas appliance. governor newsom has, until the end of this month to sign the bill, among others, into law. if passed online, sellers would have to post warnings on their websites beginning in january. the labels would be required on new appliances beginning in 2026. we're going to turn now to your

emotional learning. we don't rely on technology to solve problems. i think it is quite positive. >> think about the shooting this week. peter has young kids. all of the parents who want to reach their kids fast, but at the same time, they don't want their kids to be distracted in schools with their heads in their phones all day. how do you strike that balance? >> i hate we have to have this conversation because it is devastaing any school shootings, when something terrible is happening, you don't want your kids on the phone talking to you. you want them to focus on the safety protocols and where they are. alll although it feels better fr us, the ban is there. >> what is the chances of it being successful? >> the best way is the parents and administrators to be on the same page. it is not great when the school

has a uniform rule and parents are behind closed doors saying take the extra phone to put a dumb phone in the pouch. when they say this is ridiculous, you are the exception. we have to be on the same page and explain why. >> this is like sweet spot conversations in our community. my oldest is starting middle school and our younger seeing the older in middle school and she wants access to what she has access to. at what age is it to get that phone or watch or whatever it is? >> i think by age is tricky. each kid is different. their skills are different and self regulation. in general, i would absolutely delay as much as possible until you are in middle school. middle school means different things in different places. i would say closer to the 7th or 8th grade. >> what can we do as parents right now to help encourage kids

i'm kira klapper bay area city suing its own local school district. the city of oakland claims that the usd is refusing to pay its share for recent school board elections, among them last year's special election for school board director. state law requires that school districts cover those costs. the lawsuit by the city claims the total amount that the oakland school district owes is about $1.5 million. we reached out to usd, which says it does not comment on pending litigation. california could soon become the first state in the u.s. to label gas stoves as potentially toxic. state lawmakers have passed a bill requiring warning labels on all
