craig: that's all the time we have for today. i'm your host craig robinson and no matter where you are, remember to "play it forward" on your home court. [music] on the dot as we take a live look outside. this is in san jose as our crews are setting up the eighth annual bay area proud blood drive held by our friend garvin thomas. we will hear from

him in just a few minutes, but first, we want to thank you so much for starting your saturday morning with us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. looked like a nice morning out there just now. yeah. not bad. some places are starting off a little bit cooler, but sleeping in weather for our weekend here. good morning carol. good morning everyone. mostly 50s and 60s. some patchy fog lingering around, but point your attention towards san rafael, 46 degrees up there in the north bay. we are looking at temperatures in those upper 40s and some low 50s. but don't worry, we should see lots of more sunshine as we go through our brunch time. hour. mild 70s and 80s in some spots and we'll get into some mid to upper 80s for our afternoon highs. some upper 60s along the peninsula, so overall a nice comfortable day. i would encourage you to hold on to that sunshine and the warm temperatures there are some cooler changes right around the corner starting tomorrow. it will feel like fall for the next couple of days, windy conditions and even some spotty rain chances. so i'll show you the
7:02 am
outlook coming up in a few minutes. keir, back to you. all right cynthia, thanks. this morning there are questions in san francisco about why officers shot a man inside a busy bart station today in the bay's gia vang spoke with a witness who shares video you'll only see on nbc bay area frederick frankfurt and his family from denmark. we ran out to our balcony. didn't expect to see this from there. san francisco union square hotel room while on vacation. and we saw what happened and somebody was running with a gun in his hand, and we saw all the police come from all kinds of streets and went down to the, the subway down here. and we hear shots. sfpd says officers were patrolling the area as part of an operation ahead of the dreamforce convention next week. chief bill scott said around 1030, his officers were proactive on jessie street when they observed a man in a car armed with a gun. officers tried
7:03 am
talking to the man, but he took off running to this nearby liquor store. with their hands up. more officers arrived and tried unsuccessfully to contain him. he ran towards the powell street bart station a block away. a line of officers on his tail inside the station. he ended up being shot by at least two officers. as disturbing as this is to have an armed man walk around the streets of san francisco, let me reassure you all that we are here. the area is typically busy, law enforcement analyst michael linenger says decisions to shoot someone in crowded areas are taken seriously, but says we don't know yet why officers pulled the trigger. in this case, there are so many different possibilities. but the bottom line is, he presented an imminent threat to others, including the police officers, and the decision was made to shoot him to stop him. investigators are still trying to figure out the man's identity, but say he is in fair condition. and the car he was in was stolen. as for if this worries these visitors, actually
7:04 am
not no. sfpd holds a town hall within ten days of every officer-involved shooting. chief scott says they will provide more information about just what went down at that virtual meeting. meantime, for dreamforce, chief scott says they will be heavily deployed gia vang today in the bay area. now to the typically safe and quiet east bay city of orinda, where one man was shot and killed in a suspected road rage incident. according to dispatch audio from thursday, the shooter claimed he was acting in self defense. it happened in the charles hill neighborhood, where flowers now sit at the site of that deadly shooting. the victim has been identified as 50 year old scott decker of orinda and truckee. the shooter also lives in orinda. he was questioned and released. investigators are urging anyone with information to contact them. turning now to decision 2024 and former president donald trump campaigning and fundraising across california, including

right here in the bay area. but it was what he said in southern california that's getting the most attention this morning. trump, promising if he's elected, he would withhold federal aid for california wildfires if governor newsom doesn't change his water policy. today, in the bay's jocelyn moran has reaction from firefighters. reporter this was the motorcade leaving woodside after a fundraiser for former president donald trump at the home of tech ceo tom siebel, a distant cousin of governor newsom's wife, jennifer siebel newsom. attendees paid anywhere from $3,000 for a solo ticket to as high as half a million for vip couple tickets. here are some photos from inside the event. tables were set up outside and the former president is seen in front of a podium. sources inside tell nbc bay area he talked about the border jobs in america and reducing taxes. we love you, trump. then, as his
7:06 am
motorcade left, supporters stood along sand hill road with trump flags and t-shirts catching a glimpse as he headed back to sfo. there's a lot of people who are very tired of the things going on open borders, especially what they're teaching in the schools and the children. the former president got here around noon on a flight from los angeles. his visit to the bay area came hours after giving a speech where he threatened to withhold federal aid for firefighters if governor gavin newsom didn't support his policies on issues like water and taxes. the water coming here is dead, and gavin newsom is going to sign those papers. and if he doesn't sign those papers, we won't give him money to put out all his fires. and if we don't give him the money to put out his fires, he's got problems. newsom posting this on x afterwards saying, quote, today it's california's wildfires. tomorrow it could be hurricane funding for north carolina or flooding assistance for homeowners in pennsylvania. donald trump doesn't care about america. he only cares about himself. the former president's comments aren't sitting well
7:07 am
with the president of the organization, california professional firefighters. i'm at a loss for words, and especially in this season, you know, and the men and women that are on the line, they're on the line tonight. trump's comments come as three major wildfires are burning in southern california. would have been just better if you just would have said to the firefighters of california and the communities, godspeed, we're with you. we have your back. and maybe a simple thank you. instead, we get threats. jocelyn moran, nbc, bay area news. meanwhile, vice president kamala harris was in the battleground state of pennsylvania yesterday speaking to a crowd in wilkes-barre. the democratic presidential nominee unveiling a new proposal aimed at expanding access to people applying for federal jobs. so as president, i will get rid of the unnecessary degree requirements for federal jobs. to increase
7:08 am
jobs for folks without a four year degree, understanding that requiring a certain degree does not necessarily talk about one's skills. the harris campaign visited two pennsylvania counties where trump won in 2016 and 2020. back here locally, a small group of survivors allegedly abused as children by catholic clergy finally had the chance to speak out in court. this, during bankruptcy proceedings for the san francisco archdiocese and now san francisco's archbishop is responding. they are more than a year into the archdiocese bankruptcy case, and the court heard directly from the alleged victims, with archbishop cordileone sitting just feet away. cameras were not allowed in the courtroom. the archdiocese filed for bankruptcy just last year, as it faces more than 500 child sex abuse lawsuits in state court, which are now on hold. because of that
7:09 am
bankruptcy filing. people who testified pressed archbishop cordileone for more transparency from the church and a speedy resolution to the cases. the archbishop has repeatedly declined interview requests from our investigative unit, but released a statement saying in part, quote, i agree with their perspective. we have worked diligently toward transparency and a timely resolution in collaboration with the other parties involved in this bankruptcy process, and i hope that by doing so, we will be able to fulfill this desire of theirs. plaintiff's attorney rick simons says he wants to see more action, not statements from cordileone. if they want to accelerate the process, if they want to see justice for the survivors, they have all the tools and power to do that. they don't need to issue a statement. they just need to do it. it's time for action, not press releases. survivors and
7:10 am
attorneys tell us they expect a long road ahead in this bankruptcy case. our investigative unit will keep following this story. a bay area city is suing its own local school district. it's happening in oakland, where the city claims the oakland unified school district is refusing to pay its share for recent school board elections. specifically, last year's special election for school board director. state law requires school districts cover those costs. the lawsuit by the city claims the total amount that the school district owes is about $1.5 million. we reached out to ousd, which says it does not comment on pending litigation. 710 right now we have much more ahead on today in the bay coming up as bart transitions to paperless tickets, the agency is making use of all the leftovers with a fashion competition of sorts. we talked to two of the designers

side cloudy skies over san francisco, but that sunshine sure breaking through. cinthia pimentel will be along in just a moment with a beautiful forecast before a major cooldown. but first, today is the day when just rolling up your sleeves has the potential to save three lives. our garvin thomas has partnered with the stanford blood center to host the eighth annual bay area blood drive. it's happening today from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at princeton plaza on blossom hill road in san jose. and look who we find there. what a sight for sore eyes. our garvin thomas joining us live this morning. hey, garvin, we are so proud of your event. year after year. super excited to be here again for our eighth annual blood drive. the stanford blood center. they are wonderful to work with and have been wonderful to work with. now, for those of you, i'm going to give you all the details in just a second about how you can come
7:15 am
down where we're going to are. but first, i want to just show you what to expect when you come down here, because these folks are professionals, danielle photographers going to head up into the van right now. these are the vans that we use. we have two of them set up here at the princeton plaza in san jose. you'll come here. you'll check in, and then these are the chairs, and it is all. these are the professionals here. they do this all the time. they are the best at what they do. they will walk you through the whole procedure. if you are at all nervous or anxious about going through this procedure, i tell you this is a great place to do your first time because i'll be here. i have literally held people's hand through their entire entire procedure. but you know, i want to talk just briefly about the need for this. they go through stanford blood center. they need 200 units of blood a day. and, you know, you got to think, where does that come from? that comes from blood drives like this. that comes from people like you. if you've known anybody in your family who has had an accident, anybody
7:16 am
who's gone through a surgery, just think about where does that blood come from? and that comes from blood drives like this. and you can help do that for somebody in your family or someone else's family. i want to go show you right now the details. we'll pull up the screen that has all the details of the blood drive and importantly, what you see on your screen is a qr code on that qr code. if you open up your phone and you scan that, that will take you right to the spot where you can actually reserve a time. today, if you're in a time crunch, we can you can reserve a time ahead of time. we're here from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the princeton plaza mall in san jose. now, you can reserve a time, or you can just walk in. there are plenty of spots available, particularly if you want to come around the 11:00 to 1:00 time. this afternoon. but the most important thing is i want to show you the rewards for all you get. my daughter last night and her friends were up late last night baking homemade chocolate chip cookies. we have those here. we have the donuts, the coffee is on the way. we have snacks for you once you do that. plus, there are a couple other benefits. everybody who
7:17 am
comes down here and registers to give blood is going to get a $10 gift card that's good at dozens of stores and going to enter for a chance for a raffle to win tickets to usher. kira how's that for a reward? save lives. watch usher i mean, i'm happy enough with a $10 amazon gift card or a pint for a pint at baskin-robbins. but usher, you're bringing out really the big guns this year. garvin. we will definitely see you out there and we'll check back in again with you in just a little bit. good to see you, my friend. happening today. it is out with the old and in with the new for bart's old paper tickets. bart, you might not know retired paper tickets in november of last year. and now the transit agency is giving local fashion design students thousands of those old tickets to transform them into high fashion. the fashion show is happening today at the rockridge bart station. students from academy of art university
7:18 am
and oakland school for the arts and city college of san francisco are taking part. this week we got a sneak peek at some designs from students from os. so we are inspired by the designer paco rabanne, who used very unconventional materials and geometric shapes. a lot of tedious close up hand work. like i know. i definitely had a lot of cuts on my hands after putting all the jump rings in one by one, paco rabanne. they are ahead of their time. winners of the fashion show will get loaded clipper cards and visa gift cards. the top prize winners will get to collaborate with bart to create new merch. i would definitely wear that gold dress. happening today a popular pet convention returns corgi con is back at the alameda county fairgrounds. it's starting today. organizers call it the largest corgi event on all of the west coast. it's the chance
7:19 am
to bring the corgi community together. the event features a costume contest, races, and corgi ninja warrior. it all starts at 10 a.m. again, that's at the alameda county fairgrounds. all right, time now to check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at our microclimate forecast. a good day to get out and show off your corgi. i know, but mostly for the morning. okay, that's when the temperatures are going to be just right for that w a l k into the afternoon there in pleasanton. it could get too hot for them. they have a lot of fur and they're just tiny, tiny little things. so be careful of that. no matter if you're in the east bay and the south bay or the north bay, our temperatures are going to be pretty similar to what we had yesterday. mid to upper 80s and through parts of livermore, santa rosa, and down into morgan hill. we'll do a high of 81 in downtown san jose. we'll see some more microclimates of course, as we get on into the east bay shoreline, some mid to upper seconds and some 64 degrees for a beach day in half moon bay.
7:20 am
this could be the last beach day for a while. look at how temperatures drop into tomorrow. those of you that wanted sweater weather and pumpkin spice lattes and all of the warm, cozy fall stuff. tomorrow is your day. and even on into monday, 60s and 70s for our daytime highs as we track a major pattern here in the forecast for our sunday morning, we'll start off with some patchy clouds clear up for just a little bit before more of that cloud cover starts to settle in into the afternoon. you're also going to feel the wind pick up, so if you have any outdoor furniture, maybe later on today will be the day to bring it on in as we track a system that could bring some very light shower chances as we go on into our monday morning, it will be hit or miss, so if you don't see it, you're going to be under that cloud cover and feel those cooler conditions. now for our monday commute, we are looking at some showers that are trending mainly towards the south, but definitely a drastic change here. as we look at how much could be estimated, we're
7:21 am
trying to squeeze out as much as we can. some places might only get a 10th of an inch, but that's not our last chance. here we go on into parts of the middle of the week and see another system that could drop in here into wednesday, so that fall feeling will be with us for the next couple of days. after today, even seeing some chances of some cierra snow. but then into the second half of the week we are looking at things trending a little bit warmer, so it will be fall for the next couple of days. we'll watch for those spotty chances of rain developing, but then into the second half of the week, we'll see those numbers pick up just a little bit. san francisco a gorgeous day today, but then we'll watch the wind and the spotty rain chances as we go through the week. temperatures will come down into the 60s as well. wow. cynthia, thanks. it is 21 past the hour. we have much more ahead on today in the bay coming up. i'm ginger conejero saab at holy moly in san francisco. they've recognized my mini golf skills. look at what they gave me. a golf ball in the toilet. but i'm

7:28 am

cover as the sun shines through. over the skyline of san francisco. looks like a nice morning to get out and enjoy. thank you so much for starting your weekend with us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a peek at our microclimate forecast. and you basically say today is the better day of the two. definitely. we are in for a split weekend. we are starting off with some areas of fog, like up there in santa rosa. good morning to you and some cooler temperatures. you woke up in the upper 40s. we are also looking at some more clearing though, as you start to make your way down here into the south bay and the east bay, let's stay down here in the south bay. hello santa clara, you have your art and wine festival this weekend. look at the temperature difference as we go on into today. 80s and lots of sunshine. we're going to drop it more than ten degrees into tomorrow and see more of that cloud cover as we go on and feel like fall over the next couple of days. so we have a little bit of a summer taste for today. fall for the next couple as we track some windy and cooler changes that begin as early as tomorrow and carry us
7:33 am
through the week with a couple of chances of some light rain. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. kira wow. light rain. okay, cynthia. thanks. we begin this half hour with decision 2024 on former president donald trump campaigning and fundraising all across california yesterday, including right here in the bay area. but it was what he said in southern california that's getting the most attention. trump, speaking at his golf course on the coast of los angeles, saying that if he's elected, he would withhold federal aid for california wildfires. if governor newsom doesn't change his water policy. that bold proclamation came just hours before trump visited woodside yesterday afternoon for a fundraiser at the home of tech ceo tom siebel, a distant cousin of california's first lady, jennifer siebel newsom. attendees paid anywhere from $3,000 for a solo ticket to as high as half $1 million for vip couples tickets. sources inside
7:34 am
tell nbc bay area trump talked about the border jobs in america and reducing taxes before coming to woodside. you see there mr. trump was in los angeles, where again, he said he would withhold federal aid for firefighters if governor newsom does not support trump's policies on issues like water and taxes. the president of the organization, california professional firefighters, tells us those threats are concerning. lost for words, and especially in this season. you know, and the men and women that are on the line, they're on the line tonight. the water coming here is dead. and gavin newsom is going to sign those papers. and if he doesn't sign those papers, we won't give him money to put out all his fires. and if we don't give him the money to put out his fires, he's got problem. governor newsom, meanwhile, this morning, rather afterwards
7:35 am
yesterday posting on x, saying, quote, today it's california's wildfires. tomorrow it could be hurricane funding for north carolina or flooding assistance for homeowners in pennsylvania. donald trump doesn't care about america. he only cares about himself. meanwhile, vice president kamala harris was in the battleground state of pennsylvania yesterday, speaking to a crowd in wilkes-barre. the democratic presidential nominee unveiled a new proposal aimed at expanding access to people who are applying for federal jobs. so as president, i will get rid of the unnecessary degree requirements for federal jobs. to increase jobs for folks without a four year degree, understanding that requiring a certain degree does not necessarily talk about one's skills. the harris campaign
7:36 am
visited two pennsylvania counties where trump won in both 2016 and 2020. as we have been reporting this past week, three major wildfires continue to burn in southern california. they have displaced thousands of people, burned dozens of homes and put a strain on california's firefighting resources. you're looking at time lapse video of the largest fire. the bridge fire, which is now almost 53,000 acres, just 3% contained. the bridge fire ignited sunday in the angeles national forest and spread from l.a. county into san bernardino county. so far, 40 homes and cabins have burned. smoke from the fires is also creating air quality concerns across southern california, even into las vegas and into utah. california could soon become the first state in all of the u.s. to label gas stoves as potentially toxic. state
7:37 am
lawmakers have passed a bill requiring warning labels on all new gas stoves and ranges. the labels would alert buyers to the potential respiratory health risks of cooking with a gas appliance. governor newsom has, until the end of this month to sign that bill into law. if passed online, sellers would have to post warnings on their websites beginning in january and labels would be required on new appliances beginning in 2026. turning now to a story you'll only see on nbc bay area. a family is now recovering miraculously after being rescued when their truck ended up in a canal. the family was trapped as the truck took on water and submerged, and somehow a number of off-duty first responders driving by rushed in to help. today, in the bay's damian trujillo spoke exclusively to one of those heroes. the pictures say it all. a truck
7:38 am
with an entire family inside submerged in a canal filled with water off highway 101. a couple of person screaming. they need help and i hear the screaming from the people under the water already off duty. san jose firefighter antonio lopez just happened to be driving by when he saw what had happened. he and his brother, a firefighter in peru, jumped in first. they rescued the mom. then they learned there were children in car seats. so they dove in and i found the little arm of the baby. so somehow i figured out to pull out the girl. so it was another baby on the back was all the way down so diving and would be capable to put out the baby. both of them was unconscious by that time, on duty and off duty chp officers joined the rescue, as did morgan hill police officers on the berm. at least two nurses and a surgeon who also just happened to be driving by performed cpr on the unconscious children. then
7:39 am
antonio went back in with chp to get the unconscious father. we pulled the father outside. i started cpr on the father and then one pd jumped to continue the cpr. today, all four victims are said to be doing fine. it's a miracle and it's very heroic. cal fire battalion chief tim mayne was at the scene and drove us to the very spot they had not been able to get into that vehicle and get them out. we wouldn't have had a resuscitation to do it would have been a body recovery and we would have had to wait for a dive team. and it would have been a very poor outcome. chief mayne says the heroic rescues and cpr saved lives that day. they brought them back to life. they brought them back from the dead. you saved four lives, i was part of the team. that's amazing. are you a hero? i think that in the world that we live in, right now, if we want to survive, we all are heroes. humility is not in the duty
7:40 am
manual, but antonio wears it as proudly as he wears his san jose fire patch. the fireman credits his heroic actions on the training he's received in the department. a family is still together, healthy thanks to antonio and his team of good samaritans. damian trujillo. today in the bay. well, hey, here's a way you can be a hero today. just rolling up your sleeve, having the potential to save three lives. our garvin thomas has partnered with the stanford blood center for eight years now for the annual bay area proud blood drive. it's happening today from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at princeton plaza on blossom hill road in san jose. and that's where we find our guy today in the bay's garvin thomas. hey garvin, this is one of my favorite days of the year. great to see you. great to see you, too. and i know i'm going to see you down here later, kira, because i'm going to throw it right back at you. we've been doing this for eight years, and i think every one of those eight
7:41 am
