the excitement, a true homecoming for tony gemignani, the 13 time world pizza cup champion who founded the fast growing slice house franchise. he began his career in castro valley, working at pizano's pizzeria. you know, 33 years later, i'm back. but a month before opening at the marketplace. a surprise setback. then all of a sudden, a few weeks, four weeks before they're going to open, they say, oh, you can't have your outside seating. it's like 50% of the seating that they had is just gone. last month, slice house was named in a lawsuit brought by the castro valley investment group against all businesses and owners of the food hall. the suit claims the popular outdoor dining area, known as the paseo is privately owned space. last month, the court ordered all existing tables and chairs at the 60 person outdoor dining area to be removed while the case is pending. nbc bay area reached out to the attorney for the investment group, but did not hear back as the case moves

through the court. castro valley marketplace management is taking matters into their own hands, starting an online petition to save the paseo, which now has more than 3300 signatures. save the paseo is all about making sure that this place is for the community. it's a great space for families to come. outdoor seating, everyone to have a good time and a great sense of community. a co-owner of the food hall is fighting back in court too. i have at least three big legal documents that say we have to use the outdoor dining we are allowed to do it. so it's kind of like our rights are being taken away and without access to the paseo, they're worried they'll lose business too. there's little obstacles that you hit, like as an independent operator and this is one of them right here. but for the time being, community outcry is driving customers in not out, resulting in what gemignani projects to be his biggest opening day yet in castro valley. emma goss, nbc, bay area

we had one goal in mind, which was team competition, and we achieved just that. so i think it's defin we were so excited because we were gunning for that for so long, and we knew we could do it. so once it was all final said and done, we were like so ecstatic. simone biles regarded by so many as the greatest olympian of all time, she's used to showing off her skills in competition, but inside oceanside frontwave arena, there's no medals up for grabs, just pure entertainment. tell me about the differences in the way you prepare. oh my goodness for this one. i mean, obviously for an olympic games you're training those for years for this. we've had about two weeks of rehearsals coming in, learning the numbers, the dances, putting everything together on each apparatus to make it look cohesive, seamless and just beautiful and really just do what we do best is flip around and be artistic. and seven eight go for the gold over america tour. described as a pop concert style spectacle full of

eight years now. this took place at the princeton plaza and wrapped up just a few hours ago. 92 people, 92, stopped by to donate blood. another 20 visited other stanford blood center locations to donate there. stanford says there's an urgent need for type o blood, and if you donate once, it has a potential to help three different people in need of blood. people forget. i think i was talking to gavin this morning, and since the pandemic, we've seen less donors coming in. and so i'm really hoping that this year is our year, that we kind of get back on track. now, those who participated got some pretty cool little perks. a $10 visa gift card, and they were entered into a drawing to win vip tickets for an usher concert. that sounds pretty cool. all right, well, dozens of puppies in training rode the ferry from the east bay to san francisco today. these dogs are in a program that trains them to be guide dogs for the blind. so a number of guide dog teams took
8:49 pm
part in today's ferry trip, which included a shopping tour and lunch on the embarcadero. last month, a similar outing introduced the puppies to the bart system. organizers say the goal of all these experiences is to make sure the dogs are comfortable taking transportation and being in crowds and going wherever a blind or visually impaired person might want to go. we're preparing them to hopefully become guide dogs one day and getting them out and doing activities that they'll be doing with someone who's going to use a guide dog in the future is really important for them, so that they're comfortable in all different kinds of environments. they look like they're doing so well so far. all right. as much as the puppies are in training, passerbys are too. trainers say they often have to remind enthusiastic people to always ask before petting a guide dog, but they often gain volunteers for the program in this very same way. all right. taking the old and turning it into something new and fashionable. bay area students spent weeks transforming old paper bart tickets into outfits, and today they showed them off. i like it.

seeing highs mostly in the 70s. so notice these wind speeds from morning into the afternoon 15 to 30mph. peak wind gusts tomorrow evening to just before 11:00 tomorrow night. then the wind speeds do start to come down as we head into monday morning. first chance of showers right there on monday. not a lot, but considering the average is zero, that's still significant. as we head into your monday morning commute. looks like the coast peninsula parts of the south bay seeing those scattered showers and then what's left of that should be mainly across some of the north bay hills and the inland hills into the afternoon, monday evening into tuesday is dry. so there you go. your monday chance of showers and highs staying in the 60s and low 70s. a break for tuesday and now wednesday. possibly a better chance for showers and you can see it here in the futurecast. the outlook for wednesday right now holds the best promise for measurable rainfall, as yet another system drops in. also notice the color coding. southern sierra has a winter

reporters in their first press conference since learning their eight day mission to the international space station, would actually last more than eight months. smooth it wasn't what we expected. however, we were prepared. the duo first took off for space in june as the first crewed test of boeing's starliner. but after helium leaks and problems with starliner's propulsion system, nasa decided not to risk the astronauts making their return in it. the starliner made its way back to earth last week, landing safely as sunny and butch remain in orbit. we could have gotten to the point, i believe, where we could have returned on starliner, but we just simply ran out of time. with months to go now until they return on a spacex spacecraft in february, the astronauts say the hardest part is being away from family. you know, my daughters i'm going to miss most of her senior year in high school. and for sunny missing a taste of home. it was just talking to my family about that and some other
