december 15th. 7:00. a live look outside. cloudy skies. gloomy as we look over oakland on this sunday morning. thank you so much for starting it with us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. i'm wearing my coat because it's so cold this morning. it's chilly. definitely seeing those impacts through our camera network look right behind me at mount san bruno. at times we could also see some of that drizzle just swooshing through the camera. there and the gusty winds that are carrying it to temperatures much cooler this morning. my coldest spot right now, calistoga, 49 degrees to the other corner of the bay, 52 in san martin. and we'll do 57 to start our day in pleasanton as we go throughout our day here, planning it hour by hour for you into lunchtime. that's when the wind is going to pick up. as we're tracking the major change in our weather pattern for today afternoon highs only in the 70s inland, so that will be about

ten degrees cooler than where we were yesterday. gusty along the peninsula. we'll talk about the chance of rain as we go on into tomorrow. coming up in a few minutes. keir, back to you. wow. all right cynthia, thanks. people in one east bay community are worried that they'll be landlocked if amtrak closes its station there. the agency in charge says it's not closing entirely, but just moving a few miles away, as today in the bay's alyssa goard reports, it isn't a done deal yet. dozens of people gathered at the antioch pittsburgh amtrak station saturday to protest its planned closure. the train is a big deal for me and my family. we like to take the train just to go up to sacramento sometimes or to fresno. organizers have decked out this train stop with balloons and decorations. they say the train is vital for them to get to work, to doctor's appointments, even to see their family members. the train has been very, very strategically important, especially since i've had an injury and i can't sit too long in a car. so on the

train you can get up, walk around, go get something to eat. the stop is governed by the san joaquin joint powers authority, which says passengers faced issues there, including unhoused people staying at the station, with plans for a new oakley station six miles away, the joint powers authority said keeping both stations was not feasible from a schedule or railroad optimization standpoint, but neighbors have continued to protest. antioch mayor lamar hernandez thorpe joined for the walking tour there. he says he's been talking to the joint powers authority about plans to keep the stop open. there'll be more conversations that we'll have to have as we will hammer out the details in terms of what's going to be needed to keep the train station open, but i feel confident that we are going to keep the station open and that we're on the right path to making sure that it doesn't go away. he says that will be discussed more at the board meeting on friday, so we'll believe it when we see it. but

until then, hashtag don't drop our stop. we've reached out to the joint powers authority for comment and have not heard back. alyssa goard. today in the bay in the east bay, a legal battle over an outdoor dining spot created during the pandemic now has the landlord pitted against local business owners. it's all unfolding at the castro valley marketplace, an upscale food hall in castro valley. the fight is over. this 60 person outdoor space, known as the paseo. earlier this year, the castro valley investment group sued all businesses and owners who are part of the food hall. in the suit, the landlord claims the paseo is not free for the public or for food hall businesses to use. recently, a judge ordered that the marketplace clear all tables and chairs out of the paseo. in response, the management of the castro valley marketplace started an online petition in hopes of preserving the paseo for use for all. and yesterday, community members came out bringing their own

tables and chairs and signs pushing back against the castro valley investment group's lawsuit. the large turnout also was a show of support for the newest member of the food hall, slice house. the owner, famed pizza chef tony gemignani, started his career in castro valley at his brother's restaurant. there's little obstacles that you hit like as an independent operator, and this is one of them right here. we did reach out to the attorney who filed the lawsuit. we have not yet heard back. in the north bay, a person is in police custody for setting a fire and vandalizing the college of marin. it happened at the indian valley campus in novato. police and firefighters responded to an alarm early yesterday morning. they put out the fire in the hills behind the softball field, but then discovered vandalized cars as well as broken windows and lights across campus. they found the suspect walking away from campus. turning now to

decision 2024. this weekend, new polls are showing a better look at how tuesday's presidential debate is impacting the race for the white house. as nbc news vaughn hillyard reports, there's also rumblings that trump will agree to another debate with harris. former president trump visiting police in battleground nevada trying to bounce back from his debate with vice president harris. nobody can believe how bad they've done at the border running our country. trump calling himself a, quote, extraordinary genius in a social media post and claiming he won the debate with harris, citing unscientific internet polling. we actually had 192 to 6 three reputable post-debate polls show trump trailing harris by five points, a slight boost for harris from before the debate. i'm a riot. i'm a riot through the vice president riding a wave of momentum set to kick off a campaign blitz this week in the key battleground states of pennsylvania, michigan and

wisconsin. that push comes as harris sits down for her first solo interview since becoming the democratic nominee and distancing herself from president biden. well, i'm obviously not joe biden. and, you know, i offer a new generation of leadership. the vice president also suggesting trump's appeal is slipping. i think people are exhausted with that approach, to be honest with you. this is some of trump's own supporters expressed skepticism of his lack of focus on the issues. it wasn't my favorite of his performances. he can't help himself. trump was insistent that he would not do another debate, but now he's cracking the door open to accepting harris's call for another matchup, saying he might if he was in the right mood. that was nbc news vaughn hillyard reporting. and remember, in november, you're not just voting for president. there are a number of local measures on the ballot. if you are not yet registered to vote, you can do that online through october

21st. just point your phone's camera at that qr code on the screen. it will take you right to our website where we have a full voter guide, including how to register important deadlines and what you need to know ahead of november 5th. now to zukes. it's a new type of robotaxi soon coming to san francisco. the company held an open house yesterday to show it off and are today in the bay. marianne favro was there at the foster city headquarters with what experts and potential passengers have to say about it. zoox is based here in foster city, and the company is doing something different. instead of adding driverless technology to a regular car, they are building their robo taxis from the ground up. it's the new robo taxi on the block. san francisco people lined up to climb in and check out zoox new driverless car. there's no steering wheel, and if you look inside, you'll see it's designed

like a carriage. this. you go in there and it's all the seats facing each other. it's a very unique experience. other features. doors open on both sides, and the boxy vehicle can move in both directions, so the rear can become the front, which eliminates backing out of a tight parking space. zoox says it also added special safety features and cameras to detect pedestrians and other vehicles. technology futurist sudha jayanth says she predicts this design will allow the company to build even larger driverless vehicles. the way zoox has designed it, is it is capable of taking a lot more people like like our trolley trolley in san francisco, i would say. but she says building each robotaxi from the ground up could prove too costly for zoox. in terms of scalability, zoox has to build each vehicle, right? they have to launch each vehicle, build

manufactured this vehicle and scale it. whereas waymo just takes the technology and adds it to a chevy or any other ford or any other car. right now, the amazon owned company is just testing its technology with employees so far. zoox robotaxis have logged more than 700,000 autonomous testing miles in california, including in the bay area, and they're operating for employees in las vegas, too. the company hasn't yet revealed when these vehicles will start picking up paying passengers in the bay area, but the pressure is on. uber just announced it's expanding its partnership with waymo to offer robotaxi rides in austin and atlanta starting early next year. while zoox is owned by amazon, the company has not said whether it plans to use its new robo taxis for package deliveries. marianne favro today in the bay. 710. we have much more ahead on today in the bay.

including senator jd vance, as well as pete buttigieg, which is and i said to senator vance, why not just focus on immigration? this is an issue that voters have a lot of faith in. donald trump on why not just focus on making the case, why peddling these baseless conspiracy theories? and so there was a robust back and forth about that. and look, i've been talking to allies of the former president. they are concerned kira for the exact reason you are saying, because his strongest issues are issues like the economy and immigration and broadly speaking, health care as a part of the economy. and so why not stay focused on those topics and their concern that this is going to cost him? adding to that, kyra, the concerns about the fact that he's been traveling around with a conspiracy theorist, her name is laura loomer. i've been talking to allies who say she made these comments about vice president kamala harris. a lot of folks thought they were racist, and so they're concerned that those comments that linking himself to this person could

than half said their policies were not renewed or renewed at a much higher premium. this week, placer county supervisors took action, passing a resolution asking the governor the insurance commissioner and the legislature to take immediate action to improve home insurance processes. it comes after state farm, california's largest home insurer, requested an unprecedented rate hike. we have a lot of big festivals here in the bay area, but today tiny fest aims to help people trying to make it in the bay. the event is happening today at the santa clara county fairgrounds in san jose. it's a free event where people can check out a variety of tiny homes. adus are also known as granny units. some of them are 3d printed, some are on wheels. we spoke with the co-founder of clever tiny homes about the expo. anyone can come in and tour these different

homes and see what living in a home like this looks like. see what home works for you. learn from experts such as myself and other folks here about what you can put on your property, how different adus and tiny home laws work and, basically learn everything about this new kind of housing that gives you a lot of flexibility and freedom in terms of how you live. san jose and berkeley are now allowing property owners to sell adus on that property. this comes amid an uptick of tiny homes and adus being installed across california. dozens of guide dog puppies in training rode the ferry from the east bay into san francisco yesterday after their big ferry ride. the dogs toured a number of shops, even having lunch on the embarcadero. last month, a similar outing introduced the puppies to the bart system. organizers say the goal of these experiences is to make sure the guide dogs are comfortable taking transportation and being in crowds. members of the foggy

doggie alumni chapter tagged along as well. we try to do fun events and have we do zoom calls with speakers, but about twice a year we really try to do a fun event. and coming to san francisco on the ferry is the most fun event that we do during the year. the event also raises awareness to the greater public. so for instance, if you see one of those irresistibly cute dogs, you are asked to ask before approaching and petting. all right. a follow up now, almost 100 of you rolled up your sleeves in san jose for our eighth annual bay area proud blood drive, of course, hosted by our friend garvin thomas and the stanford blood center. 92 people stopped by the princeton plaza in south san jose to donate, and another 20 people visited other stanford blood center locations to give blood. stanford reminds that if you donate once, you have the potential to help three

different people in need of blood. those who donated were entered into a drawing to win vip tickets for an usher concert. again, our heartfelt thanks to everyone who came out and donated. well this weekend nbc bay area and telemundo 48 are celebrating hispanic heritage. it's observed every year between september 15th and october 15th. and today our own cinthia pimentel will host fiestas patrias in redwood city. it will celebrate mexican independence day, which is tomorrow. there will be food, arts and crafts vendors, a traditional flag ceremony conducted by consul general de mexico. it will be at courthouse square in redwood city, starting at 3 p.m. and i won't ruin the surprise, but i am so excited to see pictures because what you're wearing is going to be so excited to show off my culture like that, and have my friends and my family join us. and the interesting thing about mexican

independence day is tonight in mexico city, right there in the center, they hold what's called el grito. so they're basically shouting and celebrating independence. and that will carry on into tomorrow and just be kind of a week long celebration. so come out to redwood city with me. let's check how the forecast will be. you are definitely waking up to a cooler start there in redwood city, and it will be pretty chilly throughout the day as well, with some breezy winds at times. temperatures only in the upper 60s, so i would bring a jacket i'll be wearing one of those fun skirts as well, so just join me there. if you have the chance. you will also notice temperatures cooling down here in the south bay. it's been a long time since we talked about 72 in morgan hill, 69 in cupertino, and we have a lot of microclimates going on as well. as we notice a drastic change in our weather pattern for today, 68 in oakland to 73 in walnut creek, 74 in antioch. so we're noticing those changes as we travel through the bay here, 63 in daly city and only 68 in palo

alto for today. the city will be very gusty at times. those winds 25 to 35 mile an hour, at times 65 only in downtown to 62 in ingleside. and we take it up to wine country while you're also noticing the cloud cover for today and temperatures only in the mid 70s out towards the marin county coast, we'll notice some gusty winds as well. so if you're making those plans to kind of squeeze in a little picnic with your friends or anything outside, you might bring it back indoors as those gusty winds could carry us through about 25 to 35, even 45 mile an hour winds as we take it through the afternoon. there's a timeline for you. as in the right hand corner of your screen. look through san francisco and san mateo, the peninsula that looks to be one of our gustier spots, as well as out towards the east bay, livermore, and through the altamont pass. people traveling through there or getting back home. make sure you're aware of the roadways and the cars around you as we track this system that is going to bring us the cloud cover mostly for today, we might

notice a little bit of a break through midday, but then here comes all of that gray into our nighttime hour, which will be the start of some possible showers. i'm going to call it mainly san mateo bridge south as we go on into our early morning commute. also possible through highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains. but as we go on in through the rest of our monday here, i'm looking at the showers, clearing out, and tuesday will kind of be our in-between day if we're lucky to squeeze out about a 10th of an inch, we'll call that lucky here for our monday. so it will be a bit of a gloomy start, but i promise you there is better weather ahead. a little bit of a pause though for wednesday. that's our second chance of rain here as we track an unsettled system that again, will bring some spotty showers. it will be a roller coaster of a 7-day forecast. look here, we'll go through some cooler, windier and chances of rain here as we go on into tomorrow and for wednesday. and then we'll see some gradually warmer temperatures. so it will be a split week fall and then summer with some 70s to

a year for at least the next month. the 49ers place christian mccaffrey on injured reserve on saturday because of calf tightness and achilles tendinitis. the all-pro running back missed at least the next four games. he's eligible to return on october 10th, which is week six against seattle. that game will be on thursday night

where we were yesterday. only 75 in novato, 62 in half moon bay, 69 in livermore and only 71 in downtown san jose. we are tracking some major changes as we carry it through a windy and cool lunchtime hour, and beyond into our monday, where we're tracking some spotty showers to. i'll be back with all of those details coming up in about ten minutes. kira back to you, cynthia. thanks. election day is 51 days away. both presidential candidates are keeping busy schedules. former president trump was in nevada yesterday thanking a police officer's group for endorsing him. trump taking questions while at the event, telling the crowd he did not know about bomb threats in springfield, ohio, after his unsubstantiated claims about immigrants there. i don't know what happened with the bomb threats. i know that it's been taken over by illegal migrants and that's a terrible thing that happened. springfield was this beautiful town, and now they're

going through hell. it's a sad thing not going to happen with me. trump's visit to vegas comes one day after he made a quick stop in the bay area for a fundraiser in woodside. meanwhile, democratic presidential nominee, vice president kamala harris spoke at an event in virginia last night attending the congressional black caucus foundation's annual phoenix awards. president biden also was there and spoke before the vice president opened her comments by saying it has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as biden's vice president. harris went on to deliver a speech similar to her recent campaign addresses. we have some hard work ahead of us, but i know we like hard work. hard work is good work. hard work is joyful work, and generations of americans before us led the fight for freedom and for the future. and now the baton is in our hands. i spoke yesterday

with nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston about how tuesday's debate is shaping the campaigns going forward. fact checkers were busy during tuesday night's debate between vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump. that debate now appears to be the one and only debate to be held between the two. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston is here with his thoughts. hi larry. great to see you this morning. now that we know this likely will be the only debate between harris and trump, how important was it in retrospect? good morning. kira. it was very important. we had about 70 million people watching that debate that was much larger than the 51 million that watched the earlier debate between president biden and former president trump. 70 million. the only time, as you said. and so

really, this was the opportunity the best opportunity yet for a debate. the vice president to go ahead and make her point for vice president harris to say, here's who i am, here's what i'm about. please consider me as your candidate. and of course, we saw a rather, well, rousing event. i guess that's one way we could have put it. you know, of course, as with anything, it depends where you look. but many post-debate polls had harris winning the debate. for one, the reuters ipsos poll says harris was at 47% to trump's 42%. how do you think that worked out? well, right now that's the first poll we've got, and that's a legitimate poll. we've got to watch your polls because some of them really aren't. but that's a good one. that's a five point bump. harris had lost the lead, if you will, from her announcement. and the democratic convention gone down to pretty

much even so that's good. that's what we call a good bump. now the question is, can she continue it? and that's the question. look, look, this was a very strange debate in lots of ways. a lot different than people thought. and we saw a side of former president trump that i think had a lot of people scratching their heads, children going to school in one gender and coming home in another. it was one of his claims doctors being allowed to kill babies after birth as a form of late term abortions after birth, and immigrants. you know this eating dogs and cats in ohio, these were the kinds of claims he made. and even though the fact checkers right there, the moderators at times said, no, that's not true, we have evidence saying to the contrary, the former president went ahead and charged ahead with these kinds of claims. and so you kind of wonder whether this kind of thing will add to the apple cart, if you will, in favor of vice president harris. we don't know, but but but it was a very

strange debate, that's for sure. so do you think there is a tangible takeaway from the event? maybe so. maybe maybe so. look, we talked about that poll. we'll have to see if more, more come out in the next few days. i suspect they will. we'll see if we get validation. so democrats might feel a little good about that. but but let me tell you something. never, never, never underestimate former president trump. the polls being what they are, he overperformed in 2016 by eight points, eight points better than the polls had overperformed in 2020 by five points. and these things suggest that his supporters are extraordinarily dedicated and with that, that really has us changing the calculus and reducing the likelihood that president, vice president harris could run away with this thing. so the bottom line is we've got seven weeks kira seven weeks. it's a mad, mad race to the end.

to listen in for people. part of a retail burglary crew are now facing charges accused of stealing more than $100,000 worth of items in san francisco and san mateo counties. police tracked their car to daly city and arrested two of the thieves. when they got out of the car at ceremony center. the two other drove away, but eventually officers located them, driving in san francisco near 16th and bryant streets. police arrested three men and one woman. sfpd tells us it also recovered a gun and stolen items in the car. san francisco is considering sweeping new parking restrictions on rvs, which could make it even more challenging for people trying to make it in the bay. the proposal would ban large vehicles like trailers and rvs from parking on all city streets between midnight and 6 a.m. rvs that violate the parking restriction could be towed. the san francisco municipal transportation agency would need to approve the plan

clear start out towards dublin. we see it busy on 580 as well, but more of that fog is just hovering over oakland. the bay bridge and out towards the coastline too. noticing some drizzle and gusty winds. you'll definitely feel that impact with our temperatures for today. look at this drop as we go on about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday and below average for where we are in september. think about it, september and october still very warm in the bay area. it's not until about halloween that we start to get some of our rain chances, and that will pop up in the seven-day forecast as well. we'll get to that in a second. 76 in santa rosa, 65 in san francisco, and only 71 in san jose with that cloud cover lingering about. if you're coming down here to celebrate fiestas patrias in downtown low 70s there through the afternoon, it could get pretty gusty, too, and temperatures cooling into the 60s. so bring a layer for
