stinker. in minneapolis, where we go to show you that a 10 a.m. road game is pretty tough, even for george kittle and kyle shanahan. and early on, the 49ers did themselves no favors. mitch wisniewski punting blocked. c.j. ham got it. the scoop returned by theo jackson. rod brooks that's what we call not a good start. yeah you know got 30. got right through the line. but wishnowsky has to jump on that ball or at minimum don't stand there and look at it. ensuing drive huge fourth and goal situation kyle shanahan elects to go for it. brock purdy's pass batted down, turnover on downs. another not so good look. the problem for the niners all game long. their offensive line was not up to pa. purdy had to rush that throw. he never got his feet set really all day long vikings take over second and nine from their own three. sam darnold goes deep deep deep to justin jefferson 97 yards. when this run is over the longest play the 49ers defense
9:04 pm
has allowed in franchise history vikings take a ten nothing lead gabe brown, second year safety boy this wasn't his best night. yeah, niners safeties got picked on all day long and brown got caught peeking in the backfield. we don't know why, since justin jefferson is the most dangerous guy on the field. in that instance, things would be much worse if fred warner didn't play for the 49ers. a beautiful read a beautiful catch, great athleticism, a leap. and he picks off darnold to change the momentum. not only is fred warner the best defensive player on the niners right now, he's the best defensive player in football. ensuing drive 49ers cash and brock purdy george kittle seven yard connection, 13 seven vikings at the half. but the 49ers are on the board. but too much self-inflicted wounds. third quarter 49ers deep in their own territory, and purdy is picked off by josh metellus. and that would set up a viking touchdown that made it 20 to 7. rod, what did you think of this
9:05 pm
pass? well, it was just another situation where brock purdy is just not comfortable. that was a situation where he got rid of the ball too quickly. there were other instances where he was just a hair too late on throws, or sometimes the ball would sail high on him. he was just unable to get comfortable. next 49ers possession third and 15. purdy loses the ball. it just slipped. it's a fumble. it's just one of those days at the office. 49ers could not find any momentum until it was too late. vikings win 2317 after the game kyle shanahan, what do you have yeah give them a lot of credit. they played real well but it was too sloppy on our part. the two turnovers two turnovers on offense i'm struggling on third down on both offense and defense. the special teams with the blocked punt as might as well the same as the turnover to us, it was disappointing. we can play a lot better than that, but tip my hats off to them. it's as simple as executing. we got the players, we got the scheme, we got what it takes. and you know it's dropping back and executin,
9:06 pm
knowing where my answers are at and getting the balls into the guy's hands and drop stepping and getting first downs. and it's all of that. it's football man. just because you got, you know really good players and good scheme doesn't mean the other team's going to give it to you. you have to go out and earn it. so we've had to learn that, you know, the first two games of the season. so hopefully we can be better next week. all right. our team's stat comparison time of possession dominated by the 49 ers. but they did a terrible job on third down. only two of ten. they did a terrible job defending third down. the vikings were seven of 12. rod. they didn't play their best. but this was a game they could have won had they not shot themselves in the foot repeatedly. it's hard to win football games when you're only 20% on third down. when you get your quarterback sacked six times. the six turnovers we've talked about that. and oh yeah, by the way the blocked punt as well. and really the dagger was not being able to convert that fourth and goal at the two. and then you turn right around two plays later and you give up a 97 yard touchdown to justin jefferson.
9:07 pm
the niners individually i think you could look at trent williams. i think you could look at brandon aiyuk and several other players. speaking of the secondary, particularly where they just did not play well individually and as a group collectively, the niners just did not have what they needed to go on the road and beat a minnesota team that clearly is game and possesses a good defense. another guy they didn't have is christian mccaffrey, who's going to be out at least until week six, second straight game without him. jordan mason great 20 carries, 100 yards. he's really good. but now the news keeps getting worse on mccaffrey. and how good are the 49ers without last year's leading rusher in the league. well where are you miss christian mccaffrey is not even necessarily in the run game. you miss him in the pass game. you don't go two for ten on third down. if you have christian mccaffrey there as a safety valve to get the ball to him so he can get you those tough yards on third down. but also again not to blame a couple of guys. but when you're missing the offensive player of the year you need better play from your other
9:08 pm
two top players. on offense, not named brock purdy and brock purdy could have been better. so you're not naming anybody, but you're naming brandon aiyuk and deebo samuel? well, williams, brandon aiyuk in particular. they could have been better today. they needed to be better today. it's hard to win football games in the national football league. it's hard to win when you don't have one of or many people consider your best player. but if two of your top players are not playing at their best, that makes it hard for everybody, particularly brock purdy. and then that flows to everybody else in that offense. by the way, i saw your postgame show you targeted only five times. didn't seem thrilled about that in the postgame press conference. yeah, that's true, but brandon aiyuk and he's he's better than he was last week. but brandon aiyuk still has not able to get that separation that brock purdy needed to get that offense going. coming up. it's a socal slugfest. next sunday between bitter division rivals. we're talking week three rams and 49ers when sports sunday and 49ers when sports sunday prented by xfinity,es i'm so sorry jack about the mess that

9:11 pm
why was it pivotal? 15 plays, 88 yards, nine minutes, 18 seconds of possession and the 49ers get nothing out of it. brock purdy throwing on fourth and two. hindsight's 2020. rod easy to be a monday morning quarterback where you and i ■were watching it. but should jordan mason have gotten that ball instead of brock throwing it? oh boy. that should have been blocked better. and let's give credit to van ginkel for making a heck of a play. if he doesn't tip that ball, then that's probably a touchdown to jordan jennings. you have no problem with the with the non run call. no i don't have a problem with it. if it's if it's executed better at the line of scrimmage that's a touchdown. and we probably are talking about a different outcome. okay. then on the ensuing minnesota possession tonight's must see moment, it is brought to you by xeni. xeni, of course, is the official eyewear of the san francisco 49ers. justin jefferson 97 yards to the

house. the longest passing, passing touchdown allowed by a 49ers defense. and the safeties. they're not going to like this. the film room discussion tomorrow. can i point out something that the referee beating both of the niners safeties to the end zone so he can make the touchdown call is worse, but watch the ref. watch the ref down here. we don't show it, but the ref beats the two niners defenders to the end zone. that shouldn't happen. you also also shouldn't be looking in the backfield. that's the swing of the game right there. if the niners get three or better seven we're probably talking about a different outcome. jordan's lance alworth the hall of famer is the fastest to 6000 career receiving yards. he was really good. supposedly the 49ers had some interest in mr. jefferson. who doesn't see why justin jefferson. i mean and he got paid and he's playing very well, which brings us back
9:13 pm
to our discussion of any concerns you have about brandon aiyuk this season. no, no, no, i don't i don't have any concerns. but i think it shows. and we saw this. we saw this with deebo samuel. we saw this a little bit with george kittle. we definitely saw it last year with nick bosa. and we're seeing it with trent williams. we saw it today. we saw it at the end of the jets game where he had to go in for an iv, and we're seeing it with brandon aiyuk. listen, i'm all about guys holding out getting as much money as they want to, but there's clear value in showing up for training camp and being active in some way, shape or form in the preseason. getting into football shape is not just something we say. it's not a buzz term. it is an actual actual thing. and these last couple of years with bosa last year and with aiyuk and trent williams getting into football shape or not being in the in football shape because of whatever reason, you didn't come to training camp and you were not there for the preseason. that is problematic for the individual player and for the collective as a whole. fred warner was one of the bright spots, there's no question about it. he played well this entire
9:14 pm
game, but he was very disappointed after the game and this is what he had to say. it just hurt. it hurts my soul, honestly, because we knew exactly the type of game that it was going to be, what was going to be required for us to win this game. and i told the team in there, it's never going to be an issue of us playing hard. we always play hard. we got so much talent in that room. we're always going to play hard, but it's about playing smarter. you know? we got to we got to protect the football. obviously we got to take it away. on defense, special teams. we can't give up that block punt. and then defensively you know the game plan when we say we got to stop the run and we got to be great on third down. and we don't do either of those things. like it's going to be a long day. you know what i'm saying. so we didn't do anything to help ourselves in this game. and obviously they played better than us. all right. 49ers week three opponent will be the la rams visiting the arizona cardinals. big game for the rookie marvin harrison jr one of his two touchdowns on the day four catches 130 yards. and then the hits keep coming for sean
9:15 pm
mcvay. last week puka nacua left the game injured. this week cooper kupp exited the game. second quarter a left ankle injury. and now he is in a walking boot. so that is not good news for rams fans. perhaps good news for the 49ers mcvay and kyle shanahan are comparabl. 38 years old for mcvay 44 for shanahan. of course. mcvay's grandfather was john mcvay. the general manager for the niners during five championships. and kyle shanahan's dad won two titles as a head coach with denver. they match wits. both young guys, both were on the washington staff at the same time and it's a pretty good rivalry. the san francisco 49 ers in the la rams. it's a very good rivalry. but clearly the niners have the upper hand in that rivalry. and this is a get right game for the niners. no disrespect to the rams but we know when the niners go to sofi when they go to levi's south the crowd is there and the niners
9:16 pm
play well down there. and all of the injuries for the rams not just to their wide receivers but they have many many injuries on the offensive line. if i'm remembering correctly matthew stafford was sacked three times today. so that is a bruise. and a battered rams team. and this is a niners squad where they might not know exactly how brian flores likes to do things defensively. and i think that was part of the reason why the niners had trouble. but they knew exactly the type of defense that the rams like to run. this is a nice bounce back game for the niners. if of course they play the way that they're capable of. we've got about 30s left in this segment. were you concerned you mentioned the offensive line about the 49ers offensive line. purdy was sacked six different times. no, not necessarily concerned about it i mean i think listen football we like to overreact. you know one game you win it. you're the greatest team out there when you lose a game. oh my god everybody is terrible. but i think we do need to give credit to that vikings defense. and we've seen brian flores not just with going up against the niners but we've seen him around the league. that
9:17 pm
is a very aggressive blitzing defense. and even brock purdy said today to brian flores in the postgame handshake that your scheme is crazy. so i think we have to give credit to the vikings. but the offensive line, we see it when it's at its best against the jets. we've seen it at its worst. we know what the middle ground can be and we know what the ceiling can be, but they have to play better. and to me that starts with trent williams. and he knows that rod is always a glass half full type of guy who's going to give you more optimism when we come back after the break in his one last riff. but right now it's joe wang with a preview of nbc news bay area, which is next. hey, dave and rod coming up in just minutes. we're following the latest developments. after a second apparent assassination attempt on former president trump. the mistakes a security expert says were made. also celebrating the life of a giants legend will take you to oracle park for the team's touching tribute to the late orlando cepeda and you may need to dust

9:31 pm
stunts to use during breaks in the action, as the bears took on san diego state. well, fans in berkeley, however, decided to get rid of their cards by throwing them onto the field. that led to 215 yard penalties by the referee for unsportsmanlike behavior. now fans, we love you. stop throwing the cards on the field. that's 215 yard penalties. please stop throwing the cards on the field. you don't see that often, right? you do not. all right. aside from the card issue, things went well for wilcox's bears. cal beat san diego state university by 3110. up next, a special tribute at oracle park today. people remember him, not what he did on the field. it's the kind of the way he treated people. and i think that's what makes him really special. remembering orlando cepeda how the late giants legend was honoredt oracle park a

of one of the team's all time greats, orlando cepeda. cepeda died earlier this summer, just ten days after teammate and fellow hall of famer willie mays passed away. mays thoughts when he heard cepeda was unwell were part of today's memorial. and these are his words. today is a hard day for me. i've known orlando for 70 years, since he was 17 years old. he was like a little brother. and how do you say goodbye to a little brother? cepeda played his rookie season in san francisco in 1958. that was the year the team moved out here from new york, and he stayed with the giants for seven seasons after that, went on to play with other teams as well, but always a giant. nbc bay area's thom jensen reports from oracle park. this was not a memorial today, but a celebration of life for orlando
9:35 pm
cepeda and a lot of people paying tributes to orlando outside oracle park today, taking pictures in front of his statue that today is adorned with flowers. drafted by the giants as a 17 year old, orlando cepeda was following in his father's footsteps as a legendary puerto rican baseball player. fellow giants legends remembered cepeda at a pregame ceremony today. he taught me so much about life. he was probably one of the smartest guys that i've ever met, and he really taught me about the spiritual part of life and also about the mental part of life. cepeda quickly made a name for himself in 1958, hitting a homer in his second at bat and then going on to become the rookie of the year and in the top ten for league mvp voting. i'm a giant fan and was here in 1958 and very excited when they came. i loved orlando. i got to meet him when i was in the police department.

just, you know, around here. and he was always just a great guy. fans and those close to cepeda remember him for the way he lived as much as the way he played baseball. with flair making nine appearances as an all star with the giants and two more with the saint louis cardinals. his family, former teammates, coaches, colleagues and giants employees honored cepeda by wearing his trademark white panama hat at today's game against the padres. kiefer the baby bull, also known as chacha, liked to celebrate latin heritage month with the giants and fiesta gigantes, honoring latin players and coaches, and this ceremony was planned with his passions in mind. music is a big part of who he was, but just a wonderful, warm person. and plus he lived here because he was always at the ballpark. longtime friend and fellow forever giant executive mario alioto, who grew up watching cepeda play, says orlando would have loved this celebration with the family, team, friends and fans. he loved so much. but
9:37 pm
there was something deeper to him that made him. people remember him, not what he did on the field. it's the kind of it's the way he treated people, and i think that's what makes him really special. in two days, orlando cepeda would have been 87 years old. he died on june 28th, of course, but he will live forever in the hearts of san francisco giants fans in san francisco. thom jensen, nbc, bay area news. just want to say i saw orlando cepeda play at candlestick park, and my brother thought he was orlando cepeda. we missed him. we miss him. yes, absolutely. all right. rob mayeda here now. lots of changes coming in the weather. cooler and windy today. tomorrow we'll be tracking a chance of showers during a time of year. we typically get zero in terms of shower activity, so it is pretty significant as we recap today's highs. as we were saying last night, it would be cooler. well we went from 89 to 72 today in livermore. well below average around the tri valley out towards concord as well. upper
9:38 pm
80s yesterday, 70 today. well below the averages which are still in the mid 80s for this time of year. right now cloudy and breezy around san jose 63 degrees. no need for the air conditioner overnight out towards walnut creek. we're down to 61. west southwest wind at about ten miles per hour. 57 in san rafael. the clouds there to the south and a pretty view over san francisco. transamerica pyramid all lit up there. 57 degrees and a southwest wind at ten. and yes, here's a reminder. reality check. how much rain do you see this time of year? anything over measurable is pretty remarkable. we're not seeing it right now around the bay area, but there is active weather across the northern half of the sacramento valley. a lot of thunderstorms there. this is the upper level low, which is going to settle in to the bay area by tomorrow morning. you see the scattered showers around the south bay and the santa cruz mountains. partly cloudy skies during the afternoon, then a few more pop up showers possible around the nearby hills, and then the shower activity should move out as we head towards tomorrow night. so round one
9:39 pm
doesn't have a lot of rain. just some scattered showers here on this map, but there will be that chance. a slight chance of brief isolated thunder as well as we move forward into monday morning. so stay tuned to that forecast. we start the day in the 50s and like today's high temperatures, upper 60s and low 70s again around san jose, 73 in livermore, upper 60s for oakland peninsula temperatures mostly in the 60s to near 70 in redwood city. if the chance of those showers downtown san francisco staying in the mid 60s for another day and north bay temperatures in the low 70s tomorrow. now, tuesday will have morning clouds and drizzle, but that's kind of the break between two weather systems wednesday. look how this next system drops in. it should have more moisture to work with so look at the comparison here for the rain expectations setting up for wednesday. potentially the entire bay area has a chance of a little bit of measurable rainfall and likely that will come in during the day wednesday. you can see the showers there off to the north
9:40 pm
as we head into the afternoon. the chance of some more substantial showers moving from north to south. then as we head into thursday, some clearing skies. we talked about those 90s in the forecast. well here comes high pressure building back towards the coast by next weekend. completes the roller coaster ride from fall wind and some showers at times tomorrow. better chance on wednesday to mid seconds in san francisco for next weekend. and just a reminder as we vault back into those 80s to near 90, fall begins next sunday morning at 543, so it makes perfect sense. we absolutely on that day this time next weekend. but interesting weather around here, especially through the middle part of the week. wild stuff. rob. thanks. okay. coming up, thousands of people in the south bay celebrating mexico's independence from spain. the special events happening across

apparent assassination attempt happened this afternoon. just outside the perimeter of his golf course in west palm beach, florida. one man is in custody. investigators say they recovered an assault style rifle at the scene. a lot of questions tonight. one of them being, how will this shape the rest of the campaign season? earlier tonight, i spoke with omar wasow assistant professor of political science at uc berkeley. and here's part of that conversation. okay. two assassination attempts in just two months. the incident in butler, pennsylvania, in july, where the former president was shot in the ear. it changed the campaign drastically. and in this case, he was several hundred yards away. but what do you suspect will change for the trump campaign, if anything, moving forward? i study political violence in the 1960s, and what we've seen in that period is that it really can change the culture of politics when there's this sort of constant violence, like kennedy being assassinated, mlk and others. so i think you'll see

certainly heightened certain secret security, secret service protection. and we're already seeing, you know, he now, when he does speeches is enclosed in bulletproof glass. so there are going to be some precautions like that. but i would hope that it also encourages his campaign to dial down the inflammatory rhetoric, because what we've seen, both in the past and the present is there's a way in which violence begets violence and inflammatory rhetoric and cites people to engage in violence. and let's talk about the harris camp now. the vp and president biden have both put out statements. do you think we'll see the harris campaign tweak anything as we near election day? my guess is that the again, the security for both sides will be stepped up. but i don't imagine that this will change either their positions or their strategy. they are talking about gun violence as an issue already on the democratic side. and after trump's, assassination attempt in butler, pennsylvania,

there was not really any kind of change in the tone. and so my guess is this will continue much as it's been with a lot of conflict and potentially even things that incite people to violence. what do you think this says about political violence today? i mean, you talked a little bit about, you know, violence begets violence, but talk a little bit about what you think will happen in the coming months here. i can't predict what will come in the future. but i can say that what we've seen historically in the united states is that when people engage in inflammatory rhetoric, there are often individuals who might be kind of loosely connected to society, but, well armed and engage in acts of sometimes, you know, suicide by cop has happened in butler, pennsylvania, or in incidents like what happened in buffalo or san antonio, where a young man goes and engages in a mass shooting against some perceived outgroup. and so i think we're going to continue to see in the context of this sort of very

competitive election where there's a lot of, inflammatory rhetoric, particularly by trump, that there will be more of these incidents where somebody who's, you know, potentially either motivated by politics or somewhat deranged, takes up arms and tries to be a hero or, you know, take their own life, but go out in a, in a, in a, you know, kind of, volley of glory. all right. assistant professor of political science omar wasow, thank you so much for being with us. thank you for having me. okay. we're going to continue to follow this investigation for you as it unfolds. get the latest updates on our website nbcbayarea.com. san francisco students, families and teachers are going to have to wait a bit longer to find out which schools are slated for closure or relocation next year. the school district now says it won't be announcing proposed schools to close until next month. now, that list was supposed to come out this week. the school district says the changes are needed because of a significant decline in enrollment in the district. no exact date or reason was given for the delay.

competition. all right, let's talk about sports right now. anthony flores is here for that with today's highlights. and there really weren't enough highlights for the 49 ers today. you are right. the 49ers for some reason just cannot break that vikings purple reign in minnesota. the niners are going to have nightmares about this place. they have not won in minneapolis in 32 years. now sam darnold was a backup to brock purdy last year. now he's the starter for the vikings. second quarter. he airs it out for justin jefferson. it is a 97 yard touchdown. that is the longest touchdown given up in franchise history by the 49 ers. under two minutes to go before the half. brock purdy hooks up with george kittle fights his way into the end zone 13 seven vikings at the break. but the niners were sloppy especially on offense. purdy throwing that interception that would eventually lead to a vikings touchdown. he also had a fumble, but they would get back in it on a jordan mason touchdown run of ten yards. he had 100 yards on the ground on 20 carries. the

vikings respond with a field goal. then the niners hit three of their own. but they would run out of time. the vikings go on to win it 2317. the 49ers have lost eight straight visits to minnesota. give them a lot of credit. they played real well, but it was too sloppy on our part. the two turnovers, two turnovers on offense, struggling on third down on both offense and defense, the special teams with the blocked punt was disappointing. we can play a lot better than that, but tip my hats off to them. they were a part of the reason it's football, man. just because you got, you know, really good players and good scheme doesn't mean the other team is going to give it to you. you have to go out and earn it. so we've had to learn that, you know, the first two games of the season, so hopefully we can be better next week. maybe the upset of the day, the raiders at baltimore, brock bowers going off against the ravens. the napa native is the first raiders tight end. rookie tight end with nine catches in the game 98 yards that grab set up a touchdown. then the silver and black down.
