"early today" starts right now. good morning, glad you are with me, i'm frances rivera. we begin with the breaking news in florida where authorities say a would be assassin is in custody. former president donald trump was playing a round of golf when the secret service spotted the threat and fired at the suspect. the republican nominee returned safely to mar-a-lago. for more on what we know at this hour here is nbc's alice barr. >> reporter: for the second time in nine weeks the fbi is investigating what it's calling an apparent assassination attempt against former president trump. the former president was not hurt on his course in west palm beach florida. one man is in custody. authorities tell nbc news that man is 58 ryan wesley routh.

this comes after authorities say a secret service agent spotted and fired at a suspect just outside the golf course fence line while the former president was golfing three to five holes away. >> he was able to spot the rifle barrel sticking out of the fence and immediately engaged that individual, at which time the individual took off. >> reporter: a witness reported seeing someone run out of the bushes and into a black nissan and snapped a photo, sheriff's deputies then tracked the license plate and quickly stopped this black nissan, taking the suspect into custody. >> in the bushes where this guy was is an ak-47 style rifle with a scope, two backpacks which were hung on the fence that had ceramic tile in them and a go pro. >> reporter: the incident raising new questions about securing the former president and republican nominee. the secret service faced sharp

criticism after former president trump survived an attempted assassination at a pennsylvania rally in july. the former president saying he is safe and well and will never surrender. vice president harris saying she had been briefed on the situation, was glad he is safe and, quote, violence has no place in america. in washington, alice barr, nbc news. for more on how the former president is reacting to this latest security threat we're joined by nbc's brie jackson. good morning, brie. what do we know about how mr. trump is doing after this incident. >> good morning, frances. soon after the incident an email was sent out reassuring supporters that the former president was safe but late last night we heard some more from mr. trump on social media. he thanked everyone for their concern, writing that it was, quote, certainly an interesting day. mr. trump also thanked the secret service and the sheriff's office, saying that law enforcement did an outstanding job keeping him safe.

vice president harris says that she is thankful former president trump is safe, saying, quote, we must all do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence. president biden says he has been briefed on this investigation. he also condemned political violence and says he has directed his team to ensure the secret service has every resource necessary to ensure the former president's safety. the acting secret service director is heading to florida today in response to the incident. the secret service has been making changes ever since the assassination attempt nine weeks ago in butler, pennsylvania. additional agents have been assigned to the former president's detail and the service has called on military assets to support their operations at certain events. mr. trump does not have any in-person events scheduled today, only an online event tonight on x, which is formerly known as twitter, but it is possible that he could decide to

speak publicly to address what happened yesterday. frances. >> brie jackson for us. brie, thank you. the man alleged to have murdered four university of idaho students has been transferred to the capital boise. sam brock brings us exclusive video. >> reporter: clad in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, bryan kohberger was whisked by sheriff's deputies in the early morning hours sunday to a waiting plane. arriving 90 minutes later in boise, idaho, at this county jail inside one of those suvs. some 300 miles away from the site of the brutal murders of madison mogen, kaylee goncalves, xana kernodle and ethan chapin found fatally stabbed in their off campus home. kohberger charged with the grizzly crimes for which the judge pleaded not guilty on his behalf receiving a new booking photo and new venue in boise. >> state of idaho versus bryan

kohberger. >> reporter: following a high stakes week in the case where a judge granted the motion by his attorney. the judge citing concerns about a prejudiced jury pool after years of heavy media coverage and also a lack of resources to stage a trial of this magnitude. xana kernodle's parents telling nbc news they will go wherever the trial takes place. >> we are not going to be quiet about us. get us a real judge that knows how to get this stuff done. >> reporter: the new judge the honorable seen hipler has pointed to recent high profile cases in the county as proof they are up to the task of a kohberger murder trial. >> our thanks to sam for that report. a member of the u.s. military is among three americans arrested in venezuela. they are accused of being part of a plot to kill venezuela's president nicolas maduro. six people in total were

arrested by venezuelan authorities along with the americans, two spanish nationals and a czech citizen was also detained. officials confirmed the arrest of the u.s. service member and said any claims of a u.s. plot to overthrow the dictator are, quote, categorically false. at least eight people have been killed in catastrophic floods across central europe. days of heavy rain have devastated parts of the czech republic, poland, romania and austria. four people swept away by floodwaters are still missing czech police say. for the latest let's turn to claudio lavanga who is following this for us. good morning. is there any relief in sight? >> reporter: good morning, frances. at least the rain is starting to ease in romania where people started to pick themselves up and clean up the mess and assess the damage and authorities are now restoring power to thousands of homes, but more rain and more strong winds are forecast for

more other countries around europe, for instance, in the czech republic where the mayor of a town that has been particularly affected by these floods has called it the flood of the century and the prime minister there has warned that the worst is notnd over yet. all across the czech republic the highest flood warning has been issued for at least 100 places, thousands of people have been evacuated, 260,000 people are still without power and they even had to block traffic in some major highways. now, across the border from the czech republic into austria in the north of austria there is an entire that's been declared a state of emergency because authorities fear that dams could burst so thousands of people were evacuated there. the same situation in poland where the prime minister has called the situation dramatic, especially in a special town where the water rose so high that people had to be evacuated with helicopters, they had to be

picked up from the roofs of their houses. so as you can see, frances, some countries like romania are trying to get back on their feet now that the worst is over, while other countries are still in deepwater. frances. >> claudio lavanga for us. thank you. we are watching a potential tropical cyclone developing off the coast here. let's turn to nbc meteorologist violeta yas. good morning. >> yes, we are in the peak of the season. still two areas we're watching, tropical depression gordon hanging by a threat, we are locally very interested in that potential tropical cyclone sitting off of the coast of the carolinas. right now we are talking about winds at about 45 miles per hour with very slow northwest movement at just 3 miles per hour. this is sitting 115 miles east-southeast of charleston. you can see time is running out for intensification but we are expecting this to pick up some strength before it moves on shore. we do have tropical storm warnings in place from charleston all the way up
