6:01 am
this is today in the bay good morning to you on this monday. thanks for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. hope you had a great weekend. we'll check the morning commute with mike in just a little bit. but what's going on with this rain? we had hot weather friday and saturday. sunday it started to cool off with clouds. and then today, we're still looking at clouds and even a chance of showers. take a look at this system that's dipping into parts of the west with some of the rain that we're seeing over nevada. some thunderstorms developing over the sierra, and there's a little bit of rain across northern california as we get a closer look. so far, not seeing a lot of this wet weather here, but there will be that chance as it stays unsettled with this low spinning across the region going throughout today. we're going to eventually start to see things clearing out, and we're going to see a mix of sun and clouds today. one of our warmer inland spots, like brentwood, will only
6:02 am
make it into the low to mid seconds for today, as we get a little bit more sun for the afternoon compared to the cloudy start that we are seeing right now, and we'll see highs in the mid 70s from santa rosa to novato, over toward the east bay, and mostly 60s from oakland on southward down to gilroy. so we'll get a look at what's ahead coming up. mike, commuters are definitely heading back to work today. no surprises for the pattern, but there we are. i wanted to show you. we did have the full toll plaza and things continuing to pack in there. a typical pattern around the east bay. contra costa county highway four in the north bay. highway 37 watch 101. there may be some debris. reports of possibly a couch near that interchange. i'll track that and we don't see any slowing on the sensors just now. the rest of the bay sensors are moving pretty predictably. 101 through san jose. pretty standard show there. vasco road. the look. it's a lot slower now. it's over the half hour mark now from marsh creek to 580. back to you. thank you very much, mike. 602 right now, the fbi investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination on
6:03 am
former president trump. a suspect is in custody after shots were fired at his golf club in west palm beach, florida. this comes just weeks after trump survived another attempt on his life. today in the bay's barry jackson joins us live in washington this morning. she's following the latest developments, and i understand the former president. he's speaking out this morning. that's right. good morning laura. so former president trump thanked everyone for their concern. and also thanked law enforcement for keeping him safe. meanwhile, here on capitol hill, lawmakers from both parties say there's no place for political violence. a second assassination attempt against former president trump, this latest happening at his florida golf course. former president donald trump is safe and unharmed. the incident comes just nine weeks after another gunman aimed at the 78 year old during a pennsylvania rally, killing one and injuring several others. the secret service came
6:04 am
under intense scrutiny for security failures then, in this case, agents spotted the suspect and quickly took action. it's my understanding that he was laying in wait and secret service did a heroic job to see a needle in the haystack. the u.s. secret service personnel opened fire on a gunman located near the property line. police arrested 58 year old ryan wesley ruth, court records show. he has a long criminal past in north carolina. officials say he now faces federal charges. this guy is in a whole load of hurt right now. officers say a witness played a key role in identifying the suspect. fortunately, we were able to locate a witness that came to us and said, hey, i saw the guy running out of the bushes. he jumped into a black nissan, and i took a picture of the vehicle and the tank, which was great. in a social media post, former president trump praised law enforcement for keeping him safe, exclaiming
6:05 am
that he's proud to be an american. vice president harris condemning political violence, urging all americans to do their part to ensure that this incident does not lead to other. and president biden also condemned political violence and said that he's directed his administration to ensure the secret service has the resources needed to keep former president trump safe. laura. a lot of things had to come together to make that arrest there. very interesting. thank you. brie. well, people who actually live in the same hawaiian town as the suspect are stunned. kava is located near the north shore of oahu. while it's not clear how long the suspect lived there. one neighbor describes him as opinionated but always peaceful. another neighbor described him as helpful in times of need, always willing to give, always willing to help. blows my mind that they do something like tha. our oahu affiliate actually

interviewed him back in 2018 following major flooding there. and neighbors tell us at one point he had a biden campaign sign in his front yard. his son has issued a statement calling him a good father and a great man, adding he hopes things are just getting blown out of proportion. 605 right now, in many california, homeowners are struggling to make it in the bay. this is when it comes to home insurance. now the state wants to help move homeowners forward by passing major reforms to try to help the homeowners. today in the bay's bob redell joining us live this morning. okay. so, bob, so the first thing here the state wants the feedback of homeowners. correct. good morning to you, marcus. the state insurance commissioner wants your suggestions. this would be for a virtual town hall meeting tomorrow. we'll have more on that in a moment. as we've been reporting over the past several months, a major home insurers, they've been raising rates here in the state of california and in some instances, not renewing
6:07 am
policies, in part because of the costs associated with wildfires. one homeowner in nearby san ramon told us his insurance company, liberty mutual, will not be renewing his policy due, to, quote, algae, mildew, mold or moss on the roof, unquote. he sent us a photo of his roof, says he saw nothing on it, and his roofer said the same. but he says that that did not change his insurers decision. liberty mutual did not respond to our request for comment on this. felt like somebody was putting one over me. parts of the state right now where an insurance company won't even call you back. and that's going to change once these new rules are in place. i hope it's not not like a shallow band-aid solution, you know, because they they do need to fix the problem. this past week, the placer county board of supervisors asked governor newsom to declare a state of emergency and take immediate action to stabilize the insurance market. the california

insurance commissioner again working to roll out new reforms aimed at making insurance more available. the state wants you to weigh in about what that would look like. the state insurance commissioner, again holding a virtual public hearing at 10:00 tomorrow morning. we are posting information on our website at nbcbayarea.com again on how you can submit your suggestions ahead of time. reporting live here in dublin. bob redell today in the bay. all right. could provide a lot of needed help out there. all right bob, thank you. now consumer investigator chris gilmore has been following california's insurance crisis, including what you should do if your policy suddenly ends. you can also scan the qr code there on your screen is going to give you more information or take some time to watch chris's full report on our website, nbcbayarea.com. now to dramatic video of an apartment fire in san francisco broke out last night on the top floor of a building at hyde and eddy streets in the tenderloin. firefighters say one person and two cats were rescued. the victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. the fast
6:09 am
moving fire broke out in the kitchen of the sixth floor apartment. we have a photo, in fact, of firefighters rescuing one of those cats from the apartment. the first rescued from a fire escape with its owner. the second cat found clinging to the ledge of an apartment window as a small crowd gathered below. firefighters were able to bring it down safely. the fire is now out, but damage is extensive and also affects nearby apartments. taking a live look outside, this morning over in san jose. looking nice there for us this morning. meteorologist kari hall has a look at this roller coaster of weather that we're expected to see there. cold rai, warmer all in one week. it sounds like the seasons are changing, right? so we're heading into the end of summer and we begin fall this sunday. and so we're seeing things going up and down the battle of the air masses. so today it's starting out nice and cool with some mid to upper 50s in san francisco we can see the low clouds rolling by. and it's going to stay mostly cloudy
6:10 am
today with those highs. they're only in the mid 60s. we're watching out for a chance of rain, but our high temperatures will only be in the 60s and 70s all across the bay area we don't get many days like this in this cooler weather. will last just for a little bit longer as we watch out for more spotty showers, so i'll have more on that in a few minutes. mike has been looking at gas prices and where you can fill up for less. yeah, we're trying to the best prices we can find. i mean, local prices are moving up. although statewide i'm hearing about other areas getting better deals. we'll talk about san jose though. there is an outlier lower than the rest is 403 at the arco on north capitol avenue. similar situation for contra costa county. concord has their best. the outlier there is 405 at valero on willow pass road. and both of those cases, the rest of the prices in that county are about 10 or $0.15 higher. in marin county, it's 429 at farrar auto in san anselmo. that's on sir francis drake boulevard. you might have heard some of these names before. these come to us from all of your reports and gasbuddy.com. check your area on
6:11 am
the roadways. we're looking at a pretty smooth drive. you've heard this before as well. the east bay shows the build pretty typical in most spots, but we're looking at the approach toward the richmond bridge westbound 80. there is a crash near san pablo avenue that might be making things lighter at the toll plaza there right now, back to you. thanks mike. frightening moments in the sky. a flight diverted after it started dipping down moments after takeoff. ahead on today in the bay, the painful fallout passengers were left suffering with. all right. this is the week. the week where the fed will likely cut interest rates. we'll look ahead to that. let's go out to wall street. i imagine they don't do anything much until they know. and that will come wednesday. plus a tahoe bear taking a dip. the viral video you need to see to believe when we come back. stick around for that and much more. you're watching today in the bay
6:12 am
6:13 am
6:14 am
is the week the fed makes its major decision on interest rates. more about that in a second. looking ahead, apple will bring its newest phones to stores on friday. this stock eat is the parent company of chili's. chili's, the restaurant tells investors customers are coming back. it's got a new ceo and it says food costs have
6:15 am
stabilized as well. the fact that inflation is now pretty much under control, it's going to be a big focus for the federal open markets committee this week. they're going to make a decision on interest rates on wednesday. we expect a cut of at least a quarter percent, maybe a half a point. every era of rate cuts is different. this one is no exception. the fed will be cutting rates at a time. the american economy is on solid footing. unemployment is still near historic lows. consumer confidence, consumer spending are up. this may be the soft landing they hoped for, though. nothing is instant. it's going to take a while for those lower rates to hit you. the american consumer. someone once compared interest rates to turning on a spigot, only to have the water flow about six months later. and it's not just the american central banks. brazil's central bank, the bank of england, will be making rate cuts decisions this week. norway, south africa and on friday, japan. salesforce announced minutes ago it's giving american schools millions of dollars to better prepare
6:16 am
schoolchildren for jobs using artificial intelligence. a recent poll showed just 15% of american workers say they're ready and trained to use ai. money will go to san francisco and oakland public schools. it's an interesting time. ai has changed the world. we think about it through the lens of how are we partnering with these districts and our nonprofits on this journey, and what is our commitment to ai, skilling and preparing them for a future that right now everyone's learning? and as doctor smith points out, not just schools, but nonprofits like hidden genius, which helps underprivileged kids. we'll track how those schools are using the money, see how they're turning good intention into actual education. the wall street journal says tesla is slowing down its rollout of supercharging stations. elon musk laid off most of the supercharging department at the car company. the number of superchargers fell 28% this summer compared to last. and
6:17 am
over the evening here into the morning, elon musk deleted a tweet that was talking about the assassination attempt on donald trump, talking about the assassinations of other people, which is something you should never discuss. he has deleted. he has said, well, i other people found it funny. is his explanation. we'll see if we can get a better explanation. interesting. but people saw it before it was deleted too. oh yeah. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. well, new at 6:00. passengers talking about what became a frightening and tense situation in the air when their plane lost cabin pressure yesterday on a delta flight from salt lake city to portland. delta confirms the plane could not pressurize above 10,000ft. one passenger says people began to bleed from their noses and ears, feeling sharp and intense pain. it was scary, like, i mean, because you just don't know what's wrong. past that, you know, she put her finger in her ear and was like, oh my god, my ear is bleeding. you know? and then they got my other colleague two rows behind me. i look back and he's in tears. and then, you know, and just to see
6:18 am
all of my colleagues, the people that i work with every day and care about and i'm like, oh gosh, is everybody going to be okay? that is frightening. when the plane did safely land. paramedics treated about a dozen people, some suffering ruptured eardrums. passengers also say oxygen masks never deployed and the crew never explained what was happening. frightening. well, the stage and. well, i should say this is a strange sight over there at cal football game over the weekend. the bears head coach actually had to beg fans to behave and stop throwing things onto the field. so cal coach justin wilcox used the referee's microphone there, addressing his team of fans there during saturday's game against san diego state. it came after cal fans were given those cards for stunts to use during the breaks in action. fans in berkeley have decided to get rid of those cards, throwing them onto the field that led to 215 yard penalties by the referee for unsportsmanlike behavior. aside from the game, the card issue there. the game anyway.
6:19 am
cal beat san diego state 3110. well, trending this morning. it may be cooling down, but a couple of weeks ago it was so warm. even a bear in south lake tahoe couldn't resist taking a dip. prof. prof. prof just moseying along the beach there. lisa martin captured video of the bears swimming at the beach on labor day weekend. the bear could be seen walking at the edge of the pier near the boathouse on the pier, and then cooling off by swimming in the lake. the lake we all love. it's his two. yeah. i want to see that paddleboard. that is a california something standing up on? you get the video. i'm running. everybody was so close. nobody even bothered moving. they could have moved, too. yeah. yeah. all right, well, you know, we're just too used to those videos now, you know? he'll have another chance to take a dip this weekend as temperatures heat up. we're going from cool and wet weather
6:20 am
to back to summer over the next few days. so we're getting ready for a big whiplash over the next several days. we're watching out for a chance of showers. it's cloudy to start, and there may even be some isolated thunderstorms. the higher risk will be in the cierra, but we'll also be watching out for that chance here in the bay area on wednesday. so we have a couple of storm systems coming in. the first one right over us now, and it's producing quite a bit of rain over nevada and areas off towards the north. and you can see the light rain that has developed across northern california. but as we get a closer look, it's right now just mostly cloudy. and there may be that chance that we could see some hit or miss rain for the north bay for parts of the coast going into this morning, into the afternoon, and then clearing out by this evening. more clouds come in tomorrow, and then we're looking at another chance of rain on wednesday, with the second storm system coming in. and it does show that, at least for the foothills parts of the north bay, there may be some
6:21 am
spotty showers and possibly some thunderstorms popping up. our temperatures today much cooler than what we typically see for this time in september. a high of 75 degrees in concord, and that's one of the warmer spots. we'll see mid 70s in the north bay, while san francisco will be in the upper 60s and lower 60s for half moon bay. tomorrow temperatures look very much the same. and then going into wednesday, it's going to be a touch cooler in some spots, but a bit of a warm up for the east bay as we watch out for those pop up showers and thunderstorms. so we go from cool weather to summer heat once again for the weekend. and this summer is when we officially on the calendar. welcome in fall, but it's going to be a hot one as our high temperatures will be hitting the low 90s at least to start out the week. we have a bit of some sweater sweater weather. if you are missing out on that section of your closet, you can break that out today, the next couple of days, and then look at san francisco.
6:22 am
definitely cooler here with those gusty winds. and there may be some light showers here and there through midweek. and mike, you're seeing much more slowing now on the bay bridge. yeah. you might not be able to tell quite from this shot. we'll look over here toward the bend. you can see how folks are pushing in toward the tunnel itself. the speed sensors show more. that's slowing into san francisco will cause them to slow those metering lights down a bit. and that's why there's more congestion approaching the toll plaza. the maze is moving well, the east shore freeway just fine. we now see the slowing right here toward the richmond bridge. that volume starting to build. and here we continue to see more slowing on 242. but walnut creek interchange hold steady for 680 and 24. we're holding steady right now for vasco road as well. that's good. they hit the 33 minute mark from marsh creek down to 580, and that's lasted for the last 20 minutes in there. and it's still a smooth drive out of the altamont pass. more traffic continues to feed in, of course, into the area. no major problems for the south bay. we'll see that second slowdown start in about 15 minutes right here on 101. back to you. thanks mike.

didn't stop and really think about it and listen to the lyrics. it was like, oh, that's my parent's music, you know? right? and so for me, with the content that i post, i really like to sort of distill the meaning of the song into a quick little sentence or soundbite, especially one that maybe has like some gen z slang in there or something, or even just saying the meaning of a song in a more modern way so that people can really listen to it and be like, oh, wait, actually, my favorite song right now says the same thing. and then there's that connection. he's really great to follow on social. you can watch the entire interview that i had with omar and his performance later this morning on our streaming only newscast, which airs live at 8 a.m. you can find it on roku, pluto and other streaming platforms, including nbcbayarea.com. can't wait to see that. all right, well, we got a lot more ahead for you at 630, including another pimp, a former president trump's life with 50 days until the election day. our scott

temperatures, gary. yeah, it's going to be a lot cooler. and we are getting a break from summer heat. with these last few days of summer. we have left this week. so we're looking at mostly upper 50s and low 60s as we're getting started. very windy in san francisco with that wind coming out of the west at about 15 to 25mph, and then as we take a look at what's coming our way, the chance of rain as this storm system spins across the region. as of now, it's been dry. but we will have that chance of rain at least for the next few hours, and our temperatures today cooler than normal with highs in the upper 60s. low 70s. some of our warmer spots in the east bay and north bay will be in the mid 70s. and we'll talk about that warm up and more rain chances coming up in a few minutes. marcus. all right. thanks, kari. well, the fbi continues to investigate what it's calling a second attempt on former president trump's life on sunday. and scott mcgrew joins us now. that suspected gunman is expected in court. actually, just a short time from now. we just learned about that. yeah. good morning. we'll get our first look at 58 year old ryan

6:38 am
chance of seeing that rain in parts of the north bay. and where you see all of those bright colors, that's the potential of some heavy activity with some thunderstorms right now in palo alto. we're at 57 and mostly cloudy. it will stay cloudy throughout the morning and peeks of sunshine. and look at these highs for us for this afternoon in the low 70s from palo alto to hayward as well as dublin and livermore. a nice cool start to the week. a taste of fall with these last few days of summer on the calendar, so we'll talk about the changes in our temperatures. and mike, you're saying hey to dublin? yeah. hey, the homophone. hey, hey, why bale of hay reported south 680, just about the dublin interchange. just now. you saw those sensors change from red to orange in the area. i think they may have cleared that. and that's good news for the area. folks are building off of 580 coming in westbound out of the livermore area. and that's pretty typical pattern right there. no surprises anywhere south of there. sunol moving well down toward the fremont area and 80 a little bit slow
