"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm frances rivera. we begin with breaking news. music mogul sean "diddy" combs has been arrested by federal agents at a hotel here in new york city. combs had been living there for several weeks, a person with knowledge of the investigation told nbc news. the arrest was based on a sealed indictment brought by the southern district of new york. the contents of the indictment won't be known until later today. but combs is facing a wave of lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault and misconduct. in march, federal investigators searched his homes in miami and los angeles. combs' attorney expressed disappointment with the arrest, saying his client had been cooperating with the investigation, adding, he is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal. now to developments in the second apparent assassination attempt of donald trump. ryan wesley routh, the man accused of threatening the

former president's life is facing two weapons charges, including possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. more charges will likely come. let's bring in brie jackson now. good morning, brie. what more do we know about this investigation? >> reporter: good morning, frances. the martin county sheriff's office shared body camera video with nbc news, and it shows the moments that routh was detained by police. the video shows him backing up toward the deputies and appearing to comply with all of their commands. according to court documents, phone signals suggest that the suspect was near the fence of the golf course for about 12 hours before he was spotted by secret service. the acting secret service director says the suspect never fired his weapon, and the former president was never in his line of sight. overnight, mr. trump spoke for the first time publicly about what happened. >> all of a sudden we heard shots being fired in the air. and i guess probably four or

five. and it sounded like bullets, but what do i know about that. but secret service knew immediately it was bullets. and they grabbed me. i was with an agent, and the agent did a fantastic job. there was no question that we were off that course. i would have loved to have sank that last putt, but we decided let's get out of here. >> reporter: mr. trump also confirmed that president biden called him to make sure he was okay. and to offer more help with security. two sources tell nbc news that the former president's security detail has dramatically increased since the assassination attempt back in july. today mr. trump will be back on the campaign trail, holding a town hall in flint, michigan before going to new york. meanwhile, vice president harris has another campaign event in philadelphia today. frances? >> brie, thank you. the secret service is still facing a lot of questions, like how the suspect was able to hide near the golf course for 12

hours. and why agents didn't search that area sooner. the agency's acting director says this was an unscheduled stop. >> yesterday was an off-the-record movement. off-the-record. and the president wasn't really supposed to go there. it was not on his official schedule. so we put together a security plan, and that security plan worked. >> acting director ronald rowe also said he has ordered an overhaul of the secret service, saying it's time to change from a reactive model to a readiness model. he did not go into detail about those plans. at least 33 bomb threats have been investigated in springfield, ohio in the days since former president and his running mate started making unfounded claims about haitian immigrants. that's according to ohio's governor who says they are now going to conduct daily sweeps at school. two colleges in the city have moved to virtual learning. and two elementary schools were evacuated monday after receiving separate threats. an arts and culture festival was

scheduled for this weekend, and it has also been canceled. officials in new york releasing new forensic sketches of a possible new victim in a string of murders near gilgo beach. they're now asking for help identifying the person who they call asian doe. valerie castro has more. >> reporter: authorities releasing these new images of a gilgo beach murder victim whose case has gone unsolved more than a decade. >> today we're asking for the public's help in identifying an individual who has been known as asian doe. this person had a name. this person had family. this person had friends. we're reaching out to anyone who might have known this individual, to help us with that identification. >> reporter: a past sketch of the victim whose remains were found on the long island, new york beach in 2011 showed little detail. these rendering updated after reviewing those remains show what the likely biological male may have looked like. the victim may have been a sex

worker dressed in women's clothing. tags from what they were wearing also released. >> we have a picture after individual with long hair. because the victim was wearing exclusively women's clothing at the time of death, it is possible that they identified as a woman or were known by others as being a woman. >> reporter: the remains were discovered along ocean parkway. the same area where ten others were found. authorities arrested new york architect rex heuermann last summer and have charged him with connection to six of those deaths. heuermann has pleaded not guilty to all charges and has not been named as a suspect in this case. >> were there any similarities in the way that this body was disposed of with those that were left nearby? and, i mean, are you considering rex heuermann a suspect? >> so, so if you look at, you know, where it was situated, i think it was about 300 or so feet from megan waterman in that same stretch of parkway.

so it's between megan waterman and skjessica taylor. it's all nice to speculate, but basically doesn't matter until can you bring charges, and we're certainly not at that stage. >> reporter: this victim was between 18 and 23 years old and died of blunt force trauma at least five years before the remains were found. authorities releasing the information in various asian languages in hopes of reaching the victim's family. though heuermann hasn't been named a suspect, court documents detailing internet searches on his computer did include, quote, asian escorts, manhattan. whether this person died at the hands of a serial killer is a mystery still to be solved. >> if you found strong evidence of a suspect in this case, and you don't know who this person is, could you charge somebody? >> yes. >> our thanks to valerie for that report. a pipeline explosion in texas prompted mass evacuations

and shelter in place orders in the houston area. a firefighter was injured battling the inferno, and multiple homes have been damaged. the natural gas pipeline is operated by energy transfer. while the investigation is ongoing, the company said an unknown vehicle may have struck a pipeline valve before it exploded, sending flames hundreds of feet in the air. turning to north carolina where much of the klcoastline i under water after a massive storm dumped more than a foot of rain in just hours. some ariaseas saw winds up to 7 mile-per-hour. let's turn to angie lassman, who's tracking where that storm is headed next as it weakens over land. and hopefully that will help them out. >> good morning, frances. we will see improvements, but we've got to wait a little while as far as the flooding is concerned. 10 million people still under flood alerts.

charlotte, virginia beach, cape hatteras all included in this as we saw substantial rains over the past 24-36 hours. much of that is going to work its way into the inland arias. the central appalachians is what we'll see what's left of tropical cyclone eight, isolated flash flooding across that region. then it starts to lift into the northeast as we get into tomorrow. the heaviest of the rain, cape cod south to atlantic city. a little slower commute tomorrow for folks across that region. the flooding focussed across richmond, norfolk. but washington, tkd.c. is includ in there as well. anywhere from 3 to 5 inches. the flooding, not done with it just yet. meanwhile, not done with the warm temperatures across especially the midwest and great .
